Monica Magnenat, 69, formerly of the Fairfax area, died suddenly of a heart attack Aug. 3, 2004, at her home at 912 E. Willow St., Sequim, WA.
She was born Aug. 30, 1934, in Wellington Twp., Fairfax, the daughter of Hilmer and Ordell Kiecker, who preceded her in death. She was baptized and confirmed at Emanuel Lutheran Church, Wellington, and attended its parochial school eight years. She graduated from Fairfax H.S. and received her degree in Registered Nursing from Kahler School of Nursing, Rochester, MN, and later obtained a degree to teach nursing. On July 21, 1957, she married Ralph Magnenat and moved to CA, later living in ID and WY before retiring to Sequim, WA.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph; one daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Brian Kolbe of Seattle, WA; and one son, Stephen Magnenat of Lewiston, ID; one sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and Dallas Arhart of Winthrop; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Russell and Patricia Kiecker of Luck, WI, and Michael and Linda Kiecker of Fremont, WI; nephews and nieces and their families and many relatives and friends.
She was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Sequim and a tireless worker for the sick and needy, concerned for the welfare of others and volunteering to help with many public and charitable programs.

Judge William B. Mather, Jr., 90, of Springfield, formerly of New Ulm, died Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at the St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 13, at United Church of Christ in New Ulm with Rev. Todd Nelsen officiating. Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm, and one hour prior to service at the church. A combined service of Charity Lodge #98 A.F. & A.M. and Orient Chapter #60 Order of the Eastern Star is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
William B. Mather, Jr., the son of William and Eva (Klossner) Mather, Sr. and stepson of Anna Kienlen Mather was born May 13, 1914, in New Ulm. After graduating from New Ulm High School, he attended the University of Minnesota and the St. Paul College of Law (now William Mitchell). He was united in marriage to Esther Michelson on October 10, 1942, in Omaha, Nebr., where they lived for a time before moving to St. Paul where he completed his studies and earned his law degree in 1948. That year Bill and Esther moved to New Ulm where he practiced law before being elected Judge of Juvenile and Probate Courts. He served in that capacity for thirty years, retiring as County Court Judge in 1980. They moved to the St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield in 2001.
Bill was a member of the United Church of Christ where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, and as a member of the church board. He was also a member of Charity Lodge #98 A.F. & A.M., Orient Chapter #60 Order of the Eastern Star, the Minnesota Bar Association, and the Minnesota Judges Association.
Survivors include his wife, Esther of Springfield; daughter, Kristen Mather Madsen and her husband Terry of Omaha; grandson and granddaughter, Eric Mather Madsen and Elizabeth Madsen of Omaha; nephew, Bill Schade and his wife Sandy of New Ulm; niece, Gretchen Tjossem and her husband Bob of Idaho; sisters-in-law, Gladys Englund and her husband Barney of Fort Meyers Beach, FL, Helen Werre and her husband Joe of Rochester, and Terry Gordon and her husband George of California.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Amy Mather Schade and brother-in-law, Fritz Schade.

Herbert Dillon, 79, of Schroeder, was called Home to be with his Savior Wednesday, August 11, 2004 in Grand Marais with his wife of 47 years at his side.
He was born June 8, 1925, to Sidney and Edna in Kerkhoven, MN. Herb became a child of God through Baptism January 19, 1926. He served in the U.S. Navy as a pharmacists mate first class for three years.
Herb was employed at Benson Optical Co. for 30 years. He reaffirmed his faith through Confirmation March 25, 1956 and married Janice Footh on October 6, 1956. They resided in the New Ulm area for 25 years. He became interested in scrimshaw and jewelry making, and they settled in Schroeder where they opened Dillon's Gift Shop, which they enjoyed for 25 years. Herb found time to work in his beloved garden and he also loved hunting and fishing. He was a faithful member of Faith Lutheran Church. Herb loved his dog and Fifi will miss his love and games.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Harold.
Herb is survived by his wife, Jan; son, Herb and his wife, Sharon and their sons, Herb and Travis. He is also survived by a son, Richard; daughters, Patricia and Arlene; sister, Helen; brother, Harvey; sister-in-law, Marilyn Footh; nieces and nephews; and a host of many dear friends.
Memorial service will be Saturday, August 14, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Silver Bay with Dr. Dennis Brostrom officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Schroeder Cemetery.
Services entrusted to the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 218-624-5200.

Wallace J. Johns, 82, of Sleepy Eye, MN died on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye, MN.
Visitation will be at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, on Friday, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM. There will be a parish prayer service at 7:30pm Friday at the funeral home.
Service will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at 10:30 AM. The Clergy will be Fr. Brian Oestreich. Interment St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery with military rites by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard.
Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, MN. E-mail condolences may be sent to the family via www.sturmfh.com.
Wallace was born on September 27, 1921 in Essig, MN, the son of Henry & Amanda (Eineke) Johns. He grew up in Sleepy Eye and attended St. John's School. He entered the United States Army Air Corps in 1942. After his discharge in 1945 he returned to Sleepy Eye and worked at Del Monte. Wallace married Theresa Breu on October 5, 1948 in Searles, MN. The couple made their home in Sleepy Eye and Wallace continued to work at Del Monte until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing, hunting and trapping.
Survivors include daughters, Linda & husband Gerald Reiffenberger of Somerton, AZ and Bonnie & husband Steven Ladd of Cambria, son, Wallace & wife Kathy Jo Johns of Mankato and five grandchildren, Dyani & Robyn Ladd and Jessica, Samantha & Thomas Johns. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Theresa in 1988 and two brothers.

Willard Mecklenburg
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 14, 2004 at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. Friday and from 7:30 a.m. to the time of service at the funeral home on Saturday.
Willard is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Eileen and Harill Schroeder of Sleepy Eye; brother and sister-in-law, Wallace and Clarie Mecklenburg of New Ulm; a sister-in-law, Joyce Mecklenburg of Sleepy Eye; twelve nieces and nephews; many great nieces and great nephews; cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Shirley Mecklenburg in infancy; and brothers, Earl Mecklenburg and Chester Mecklenburg.
Willard Alex Mecklenburg was born on May 15, 1919 in Milford Township, Brown County to Arthur and Ella (Meyer) Mecklenburg. He graduated from New Ulm Public High School and was in the class of 1936. He farmed all his life in Milford Township with his brother Chester until they retired. Willard enjoyed hunting, mushrooming, fishing, the outdoors and being with his family. In recent years he helped his nephew with farm work.

Arnold Schultz, 72, of Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004 at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield.
Arrangements are pending with Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield.

Mary Wyczawski
NEW ULM -- Mary (Mrs. Carl "Red") Wyczawski, 73, of 912 South Minnesota Street in New Ulm, died Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at the Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 14, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Father Douglas Grams will celebrate.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m., Friday and will continue for one hour prior to the time of mass on Saturday at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday at the church.
The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
Mary is survived by her husband, Carl "Red" Wyczawski of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Beth and Patrick Murray of Coon Rapids, Sara and David Stenhaug of Rochester, Patty Wyczawski and Phil Martin of St. Paul, Amy and Chris Cooke of Columbia Heights; sons, Steven Wyczawski of St. Paul, Paul Wyczawski of Murray, Kentucky, Thomas Wyczawski of Robbinsdale; grandchildren, Trenton, Travis, Jordan and Joshua Wyczawski, Tim, Katie and Meghan Murray, Susan and Elizabeth Stenhaug, Henry Martin and Alexandra Cooke; a sister, Carol Smith of St. Peter; brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Kaye Green and William "Bill" and Elizabeth Green all of New Ulm.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Benedict in 1961 and her mother Helen in 1982.
Mary Elizabeth Green was born December 9, 1930, in New Ulm the daughter of Benedict and Helen (Schweiss) Green. She attended St. Mary's Grade School and was a 1948 graduate of New Ulm High School. She attended Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa from 1948 to 1949. She then attended the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, graduating in 1952. She received her Masters degree from Mankato State University. Mary's teaching career started at Slayton High School where she taught from 1952 to 1953, Eau Claire Memorial High School in Eau Claire, Wisconsin 1953 to 1954, West Allis, Wisconsin 1954 to 1955, New Ulm Junior High 1973 to 1978, and New Ulm Senior High 1978 to 1993. She also worked as a substitute teacher at St. Mary's Grade School in New Ulm. Mary married Carl L. Wyczawski on June 12, 1954 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. She was an avid reader until she lost her eyesight. She loved to do needlepoint, cross-stitching and knitting and was an excellent bridge player. Mary was a great supporter of her children's endeavors and influenced their chosen professions.
She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm her entire life. She taught religion classes at St. Mary's and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a member of the Junior Pioneers, a past president of the New Ulm Mrs. Jaycees, a Cub Scout den mother. She was lead instructor of the Madeline Hunter Educational Series for School District 88, and a member of the Minnesota Retired Teachers Association and the New Ulm Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, the Wyczawski family prefers memorials to the donor's choice.

Arnold I. Schultz, 72, of Sleepy Eye died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004 at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16 at Zion Lutheran Church in Springfield with burial at Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15 and from 7:30-8:30 a.m. on Monday, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church.
Survivors include wife, Arlene of rural Sleepy Eye; children, Jerry Schultz of Springfield, Kevin Schultz of Fairfield, CA, Pam Wendt of Springfield, Connie Dahlberg of Sleepy Eye, and Keith 'Sam' Schultz of Sleepy Eye; 11 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; sisters, Leona Willaby of Mountain Lake, Verna Timm of Lamberton, and Alice Boettger of Springfield..
Arnold Ivan Schultz was born July 30, 1932 in Sundown Township, Redwood County to Albert W. and Adina M. (Zimmerman) Schultz. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.

Lorenz Crewe, 82, of Arlington, died on Thursday, Aug.12, 2004, at Arlington Good Samaritan Center, Arlington.
Services are Monday, 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church (Mountville) in rural Gaylord, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is Sunday, 4 - 8 p.m., and Monday, 7:30 to 8 a.m., at the Egesdal Funeral Home in Gaylord, and an hour prior to services at the church. Prayer service is at the funeral home Sunday at 8 p.m.

Clark J. Sorenson, 67, of rural New Ulm died Thursday, August 12, 2004 at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato due to chest injuries related to a skid loader accident.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 16, 2004 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with Father Douglas Grams celebrating. Burial will be in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted Monday at the Cemetery by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday and from 7:30-10:00 a.m. on Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a combined rosary by the St. Josephs Catholic Aid Council and the Knights of Columbus at 6:30 p.m. and there will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. both Sunday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home.
Clark is survived by his wife of 44 years, Bernice Sorenson of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law, Deb and Rich Schumacher of Mooresville, Indiana, Sandy and Doug Elkins of North Mankato; sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Connie Sorenson of New Ulm, Rick and Julie Sorenson of Lakeville; grandchildren, Jessica, Jeff, Erika, and Rachael Sorenson, Jenny Rewitzer, Megan and Heidi Schumacher, Tiffany, Melissa, Dustin and Carissa Elkins; a half sister, Deanna Hoechst and her husband, Duane of Mankato; half brothers, Pat Mattes and his wife, Barbara of Hutchinson, Mark Mattes and his wife, Aggie of Winthrop, and Mike Mattes of Gibbon; brothers-in-law, Leo Schlumpberger and his wife, Donna of Waconia, Eldor Schlumpberger and his wife, Erma of New Ulm; aunts, Adelia "Dale" Sondag and Val Simmet both of New Ulm; and by nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; half brothers, Robert and Dean Mattes; and by a nephew, Joshua Mattes.
Clark J. Sorenson, born on January 9, 1937 in New Ulm, the son of Otto and Lenora (Simmet) Sorenson of Lafayette. He graduated from New Ulm High School in 1955. He worked at the LafayetteTile Plant and drove truck for Otto Sorenson Trucking until enlisting in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky from 1956-1958. On September 12, 1959, he married Bernice Schlumpberger at the St. George Catholic Church in St. George. He then worked for Reinhart Repair in Lafayette until 1961 when he started working for Kraft Foods for thirty seven years, retiring in 1998 from the Maintenance Department.
In his retirement he enjoyed driving short hauls for D & A Trucking, fishing trips with family and friends, using his skid loader for landscaping projects, cutting wood, traveling the US and recently finishing traveling all fifty states including Alaska, the most recent trip. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, the St. Josephs Catholic Aid Council, and the Saint Patrick's Council #1076.
Clark's helpful ways will be greatly missed, but will live on through his family.

Maureen Tobin Becker, 80, formerly of New Ulm, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Presbyterian Homes of Roseville.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Aug 20, at Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm.

Maureen is survived by her husband, John "Chuck" Becker of Roseville; daughters, Jean Becker (Michael Lisiecki), Barbara Wesley all of Minneapolis, and Mary Becker (Ricardo Salazar) of St. Paul, and sons, John (Sheila), Jim (Barb), all of Roseville, and Bob (Laura Maiers) of St. Cloud; grandchildren Riley, Ian, Hector, Ruby, Jane, Kathleen, and Zack; her sisters, Dorothy Dougherty of Fairmont, Ruthanne Lyons (Thomas) of Chicago, and Yvonne MacCormack (George) of West Newbury, Mass; her brothers, Paul Tobin of Mitchell, S.D.; Brian Tobin of Omaha, Neb.; and Frank Tobin (Nancy) of Hermann, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Lucy Tobin, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and brothers-in-law, Dr. James Shea of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Francis Hayes of Denver, Colo. and many nieces and nephews.
Maureen was preceded in death by her son, Francis Tobin Becker, her parents, a sister, Sheila Shea; a brother, Patrick, sisters-in-law, Shirley Tobin, and Gretchen Tobin; a sister-in-law, Ann Becker Hayes, and brother-in-law, Thomas Dougherty.
Born in Mitchell, S.D., Maureen Jeanette Tobin descended from Irish immigrant farmers who were among the first settlers in Davison County, South Dakota. Maureen was the daughter of Dr. Francis and M. Alice (Halligan) Tobin and was born July 24, 1924. She was a 1942 graduate of Notre Dame Academy in Mitchell. She earned a B.S. in Biology from Creighton University, Omaha, Neb., taught biology and chemistry at Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D. She worked for her father and uncle, Drs. Frank and Leonard Tobin at the Tobin Clinic in Mitchell and worked as a lab technician at Cook County Hospital, Chicago, Ill., prior to earning an M.S. in Zoology from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis. She then worked as a research assistant on a government grant for Marquette in regard to cancer research.
Maureen married John Becker on Sept. 11, 1954 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell and together they raised seven children, living in New Ulm until 2002. Maureen thoroughly enjoyed years of playing her violin with the New Ulm Civic Orchestra. She also volunteered as a recruiter for the Red Cross Bloodmobile and, with her husband, delivered for the New Ulm Dinners for Shut-Ins program.
Maureen's generosity and spirit will be missed by her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to New Ulm Area Catholic Schools or the Immune Deficiency Foundation.
