Ruth Marie Hessen Coyer
Ruth Marie Hessen Coyer, who was born in Proctor, passed away peacefully Tues., Feb. 22, 2005 at the Glory Avondale Adult Family Home in Redmond, Wash. She was 88.

She graduated from Denfeld High School in Duluth, Minn. She married Burnell V. Coyer in 1938. Burnell’s career with the Northern Pacific Railroad had them moving and living in several cities between Duluth and Spokane Wash., which were serviced by the Railroad.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, and brothers Hjalmer and Raymond Hessen.

She is survived by her brother Carl Hessen, son Gary, daughter Marie and daughter-in-law Barbara, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held in Seattle, Wash.

Norman H. Louison
Pam (Greg) Allan of Proctor is mourning the death of her father Norman H. Louison. The Duluth resident died Tues., Mar. 1, 2005, at St. Mary’s Medical Center Hospice. He was 91.

He was born in Canada. He and his parents then moved to Wright, Minn. In the 1950’s, Norman moved to Duluth. He worked for Northern Pacific Railroad and had also served as Deputy Sheriff in Wright. Norman attended Grace Lutheran Church in Wright and also Christ The King Lutheran Church in Duluth.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alonzo and Clarence, sister Larraine, grandson Randal Leskinen and a very special son-in-law, Harley Surratt.

He is also survived by children Norma Surratt of Tenn., Barb (Jerry) Leskinen of Cloquet, Gerald Louison of Ga. and Sherrel Postal of Duluth, 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and his sister Bernice Comstock of Minneapolis.

Burial will be at Wright, Minn.

Esther M. Ugstad
Esther M. Ugstad, who was born in Pike Lake and lived in the Hermantown area most of her life, died Thursday, March 10, 2005, in St. Mary’s Medical Center, with her family by her side. She was 79.

She was a former member of First Lutheran Church, the VFW auxiliary, and for many years was a member of the South St. Louis County Fair Board.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Helmer, in 1966; brothers, and sisters.

Surviving are a son, Larry (Lynn) of Hermantown; two daughters, Beverly (Regge) Vigness of Cromwell and Joan (Marty) Weir of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Helen Hanson of Duluth; and a brother, Wesley (Verna) Hanson of Hermantown; 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Burial was at the Hermantown Cemetery.

Andrew Wayne Chaim Olson
Andrew Wayne Chaim Olson, infant son of Kim (Wollack) and Shane Olson of Saginaw, was born and died Fri., Mar. 4, 2005 at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Andrew was preceded in death by his cousin Nicholas Castilleja, maternal great-grandparents Eleanor and Wyman Collier and Ben Wollack and paternal great-grandparents Reilo Roine and William Olson.

Besides his parents Kim and Shane, Andrew is survived by his brother Wade, at home, his maternal grandparents Jim and Pat Wollack of Hermantown, paternal grandparents Forrest Olson of Superior and Sandra Motzer of Proctor, maternal great-grandmother Eleanor Wollack of Duluth, paternal great-grandmothers Donabel Olson of Pike Lake and Carol Roine of Proctor, great uncle Howard Quesnel of Duluth, aunts and uncles Michelle (Mike) Tessier, Christina (Adam) Castilleja, Tricia (Bill) Manahan, James Wollack and Stacy Olson and four cousins.

Burial will be in the spring.

John Quick
Services were held yesterday for John Quick, who was born in Proctor. He died Monday, March 7, 2005 in the Cook County North Shore Care Center. He was 94.

He was born to Paul and Agnes (Eckert) Quick. The family moved to Duluth where he graduated from Denfeld High School. He attended college in Duluth and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He was employed by Traveler’s Insurance Company in Duluth where he was General Manager of the Duluth office for many years. He moved to Loon Lake near Grand Marais in 1974. It was there that he particularly enjoyed life in the forest. He was a member of the University Methodist Church, Duluth and later 1st Congregational Church, Grand Marais.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Cordelia; his wife, Cordelia Marvin; and sister and brothers, Doris, Birney and Rodney.

John is survived by his son, David and his wife, Helen of Strafford, Mo.; granddaughter, Sarah; and many nieces and nephews.

Steven J. Horvath, Sr.
Steven J. Horvath, Sr., 87, of Meadowlands, was welcomed home by the Lord on Thursday, March 10, 2005.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Irene Ringhofer Horvath, and Sylvia Makela Horvath; his parents; three brothers, Jim, John, and Ray; and three sisters, Mary, Rose, and Helen.

He will be deeply missed by two daughters, Sue (Jon) Sarkela of Iron, Minn., and Diane Davin of Proctor; three sons, Wilfred Makela, Richard (Patty) Makela, and Steve (Mary Jane) Horvath, Jr., all of Meadowlands; a brother, Carl Horvath of Meadowlands; two sisters, Frances Wayne and Katherine (Kenneth) Edstrom; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Elmer, Minn.

Lillian Cahill Gallagher
Lillian Cahill Gallagher, died peacefully Tues., Mar. 8, 2005 from complications of cancer. She was 75.

She was born in Duluth. She attended St. Clement Grammar School and was May Queen of the Cathedral class of 1948. Lil, along with Con of Proctor, spent winters in Peoria, Ariz., among lifelong friends. Known for her excellent cooking and easy social grace, family and friends lovingly remember Lil as a friendly and compassionate woman who opened her home and welcomed others, always putting people at ease with her kind and considerate manner.

In recent years, Lil as she was known to family and friends, and her husband of 51 years Corneliua (Con) Gallagher spent their summers in Federal Way, Wash. They enjoyed the company of their son Mike Gallagher of Tacoma, Wash., his wife Mary and their children Maggie and Joe, and their daughter Mary Jo Gallagher of West Seattle, Wash. and her daughter Melinda. Her daughter, Anne-Marie Gallagher and her husband Alpay Ulka, visited regularly from Chicago.

A funeral mass was held in St. Joachim and St. Anne in Sun City, Ariz.

Ellen Pentilla
Ellen Pentilla, who was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Munger most of her life and a member of its ladies aid and hospital auxiliary died, Mon., Mar. 14, 2005 at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet. She was 80.

The Cloquet resident was born on the family homestead in Beltrami County, Minn. Ellen was a homemaker.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Archie, David, Edward, Jack, Henry and Ray Newell, sisters Millie Marty and Lillie Knutson, her son Larry W. and by her husband Roy A.

She is survived by her daughters Jeanette (Leonard) Thompson of Deming, N.M. and Shirley (Duane) Davis of Saginaw, her sister Grace Nyland of Bemidji, grandchildren Rodney (Jessica) Hansen, Greg Conant, Duane Hansen, Teri Stoddard and Jesse Davis, great-grandchildren Cole Hansen and Gregory Conant, Jr., one soon-to-be-born great-grandchild and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation was Sunday. Rev. Walter Lehenbauer officiated.

Frederick Theodore Nyman, Jr.
Melody (Randy) Archambeau of Saginaw is saddened by the death of her brother Frederick Theodore Nyman, Jr. The Duluth resident died Thurs., Mar. 17, 2005 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was 55.

Fred was born in Duluth and had been a lifelong resident. He was employed as an auto mechanic with Voyager Bus Co. from 1972 until 1985, then was owner of NA Auto Electric and most recently ran Nyman Automotive Services.

He was preceded in death by his father in 2003.

He is also survived by his wife Charmaine and mother Lorraine, both of Duluth, sons Todd (Jeanette) Nyman of Hoyt Lakes, Jeremy (Dawn) Nyman and Nicholas Berg, both of Duluth, daughters Stacia (Ted) Ceryes of Duluth, Melissa (Richard) Nueva of Neb., Elizabeth Berg and Jacquelyn Berg, both of Duluth, brothers Dennis (Donna) Nyman of Ariz., Rex (Claudia Bjork) Nyman and Mark Nyman, both of Duluth and grandchildren Jacob, Carlissa, Brittney, Tyler, Joshua, Jennifer, Kayla, Owen, Nicholas, and Benjamin, and several nieces and nephews.

Irene C. Bassa
Carolyn Bassa of Saginaw is mourning the death of her mother Irene C. Bassa. The Duluth resident died on Tues., Mar. 15, 2005 in St. Luke’s Hospice. She was 85.

She was born in Duluth. She married Theodore Bassa Sr. and they resided in Brookston from 1945 until 2004. Irene worked as a custodian for the St. Louis County Schools and was a life member of the Brookston Senior Citizens Club and the Brookston American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 36A.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brother Frank Janczak and sisters Florence Lofald and Margaret Pederson.

She is also survived by her son Ted (Irene) Bassa of Cloquet, brothers Wallace (Eileen) Janczak of Duluth and Stanley Janczak of Esko, sisters Marie Bassa of Duluth, Dorothy (Edward) Bussa of Duluth and Marcella (Art) Thompson of Esko, two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment at New Calvary Cemetery in Cloquet.

Kelly H. Cote
Anne (Steve) Weihsmann, of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother, Kelly H. Cote. She passed away March 30, 2005, of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). She was 70.

She was born March 29, 1933, in Milwaukee, Wis. Kelly has lived in Duluth since 1998. Kelly married Donald J. Cote on July 14, 1981, in Las Vegas. She attended Gethsemane Covenant Church.

Kelly was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Jeffrey Colvin.

Kelly was the beloved wife of Donald; stepmother, of Don (Debra) Cote, of Cambridge; sister of Mary (John) Georges, of Greendale, Wis.; grandmother of six, Ryan, Carly, Jackson, and Ellie Weihsmann and Yvonne and Marie Cote and three nephews.

Services were held earlier in the week. Burial was in Oneota Cemetery.
