Shirley A. Harting

Brainerd

Shirley A. Harting, age 76, of Brainerd, passed away July 17 at her home surrounded by family after a courageous nine-year battle with cancer. The youngest daughter of Elmer and Mae Widmark graduated from Washington High School in 1948 and married her high school sweetheart, Ed Rudek. After Ed's life was taken in a tragic accident in 1962, Shirley raised their four children on her own.
With the children nearly grown, Shirley married Bob Vickaryous from Warroad in 1973. Their marriage also ended sadly after only five months when Bob drowned in an accident.

In 1975, Shirley married Paul Scully, who brought an additional six children into the family, creating somewhat of a Brady Bunch. They lived a number of years in the Metro area, then moved back to the Brainerd area to enjoy retirement. After a wonderful marriage of 24 years, Paul passed in 1999, not long after Shirley was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Not one to sit back and let life pass her by, Shirley reconnected and found new love with an old family friend, Clarence Harting. They were married in October 2003 and the two shared much joy and companionship in her final years.

With all the tragedy in her life, Shirley has always been one to think of others first. It was not uncommon to turn a simple shopping trip into a social event, as she has connected with and meant so much to many people throughout her life. Lovingly nicknamed "crazy grandma" by her grandchildren, she was the person to look to for non-stop activities and fun. She enjoyed playing bridge, sewing and spending time with family and friends. Most of all, she enjoyed living life to its fullest.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Clarence Harting; sister, Ethel Kunde; children, Steve (Robyn) Rudek, Margo (Doug) Erickson, Christine Rudek and Bradley Rudek; seven grandchildren: Jessica Rosewarne, Tyler Rudek, Adam Erickson, Blake Erickson, Courtney Erickson, Rashell Rudek, Corey Rudek, two great-grandchildren, and her extended family of eight stepchildren.

She was preceded in death by parents Elmer and Mae Widmark; sister, Doris Carlson; husbands Ed Rudek, Bob Vickaryous and Paul Scully, stepson Greg Scully and grandson Jeremy Rudek.

She possessed an outgoing, courageous, and optimistic approach to the very way she lived her life. She consistently chose to take the "hardest job" to lighten everyone else's load. She was an organizer, a family communicator, and a perfectionist in planning events for family and friends. She was happiest when spending time with family and her many friends. In memory of Sheila, the Anderson family has set up a memorial scholarship fund in the Pine River-Backus schools. Gifts should be made payable to Pine River-Backus Schools, P.O. Box 610, Pine River, MN 56474. Attn: Business Manager.
