Virginia J. Rudquist

Crosslake

Virginia Joyce Rudquist, age 83, of Crosslake, died on Oct. 23, 2007, at the Cuyuna Regional Care Center in Crosby. She was born on Jan. 7, 1924 in Grasston Township, Minn. to Clarence and Amanda (Nystrom) Lindroth. She is a WWII U.S. Coast Guard veteran and a member of the Crosslake-50 Lakes American Legion Post #500.
She is a member of Crosslake Lutheran Church and the Crosslake Red Hats.

She is survived by three sons, Robert (Sandra Wessling) Johnston of Buffalo, Barton (Penny) Johnston of Deerwood, John Reynolds of Merrifield; stepson, Skip (Kathy) Rudquist of Merrifield; stepdaughter, Donna George of Anoka; five brothers, Layton Lindroth of Darby, Mont., Clifford Lindroth of Pine City, Robert (Alice) Lindroth of Deerwood, Arthur (Joann) Lindroth of Brainerd, Alden Jennison of Deerwood; two sisters, Charlotte Mosher of Bemidji, Lorraine McCarvill of Richfield; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Oct. 27 at Crosslake Lutheran Church. Military honors were given by the Crosslake-50 Lakes American Legion. Burial at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Arrangements were with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.

Dorothy Pearl (Wiese) Swift

Formerly of Pine River

Dorothy Pearl (Wiese) Swift, age 85, formerly of Pine River, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. She was born Oct. 16, 1922 in Burwell, Neb., to Louis and Edith Wiese.
Dorothy is survived by her sons: Duane Swift (Faye), John Swift (Connie), Terry Swift (Marlys), Billy Swift; daughters: Peggy Padgett (Robert), Pearl Jarboe (Bill), Christine Krantz (Dick); brother, Eldon (Barney) Wiese; sisters: Tillie Rice (Sid), Leona Evanson (Nelver); 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl McClellan Swift; brothers: Donald, Elmer, Art, Louis, Mike and Harry Wiese; sisters: Anna Yaryan, Nellie Scofield; and grandson, Michael Swift.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers and may be sent to the American Diabetes Association.

Services were Oct. 27 at Kline Funeral Home, Pine River, with burial at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Pine River.

Robert L. Sawyer

Formerly of Backus, Pine River

Robert L. Sawyer, Sr., age 69, died unexpectedly Sunday, October 28, 2007 at St. Joseph Hospital in Marshfield.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held Oct. 30 at the Shuda-Plover Family Funeral Home. Pastor Brian Barlow officiated with burial at the Backus Cemetery following a funeral service at the Nazarene Church in Backus at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2.

He was born January 8, 1938 in Backus, the son of the late Kenneth and Geneva (Kimball) Sawyer. After attending schools in Backus, he entered the United States Army in 1958 and served his country until his honorable discharge in 1964. He married the former Ruth Slater on Feb. 4, 1961 in Pequot Lakes. The couple resided in Pine River, Erskine, and later Island Lake, Ill. before settling in Wisconsin Rapids in 1990. He worked as a truck driver for JMB Transport in Plover and Glodowski Trucking of Rosholt. He was a great teacher to his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed camping and loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; three children, Robert JR (Lori) Sawyer, Almond; Pamela Bruce, Wisconsin Rapids; Rodney (Jackie) Sawyer, Wisconsin Rapids; eight grandchildren, Amy, Kendra, Jessica, Kimberly, Kenneth, Conrad, Savanah and Cody; three great-grandchildren, Rodney, Reese, Isabelle; two brothers, Clifford (Roma) Sawyer, Ontario, Canada; Roger (Cheryl) Sawyer, Backus; and one sister, Sandra Taylor, Sedona, Ariz.

Mary Ethyl Peterick

Sebeka

Mary Ethyl Peterick, 64, of Sebeka, passed away Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, surrounded by those who loved her the most. She was born Jan. 15, 1943 to Claude and Maxine (White) Crosby in Hope Township, Michigan and was baptized a Seventh Day Adventist. She graduated high school in 1961 from Maplewood Academy, Hutchinson, Minn. She later completed the Psychiatric technician course at Brainerd State Hospital in 1968.
Mary had two children from her first marriage, Peggi Sue and Rosa Jayne. She married LeRoy Peterick on Aug. 15, 1970 and had another daughter, Mikki Jo. They have made Sebeka their home since 1981 where she worked on the family farm raising dairy cows and Belgian horses. She was an active member of both the Central Minnesota Draft Horse Association and the Mid-MN Draft Horse Association for many years. Club members looked forward to receiving her humorous newsletters.

Mary loved baking, especially for her grandson, Garrett, and enjoyed trying unique recipes. Her expansive flower garden was her pride and joy with its waterfall, pond, paths, and many beautiful flowers. The garden was a year-round project as she would plan new things to expand or change for the next spring. She also especially enjoyed her role as hostess for 13 years of the Central MN Draft Horse Fall Field Day that was held on the family farm. She was known for her creative and witty signs that led the way to the event and would spend months planning in advance for the big day. Mary also took pleasure in spending weekends with Mikki, who was her daughter and best friend.

Mary is survived by her husband, Leroy; mother, Maxine Crosby of Longville; daughters, Mikki Peterick Roth and her husband Jeremy Roth of Milaca, Rosa Sims of Killeen, Tex., Peggi Young of Deer River; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Claude Crosby.

A private memorial service was held at the family farm.

Greta Thompson

Clarkson, WA, formerly of Pine River

Greta D. Thompson, 73, of Clarkston, Wash., formerly of Pine River, passed over to be with the Lord on Nov. 9, 2007 at home with her daughters by her side.
Born Greta Darlene Beavers on Aug. 2, 1934, Greta's battles with cancer began in 1968. Over the years cancer had taken pieces, if not all, of her major organs but one; her heart, which belonged to her family and friends.

She was active in the VFW both in Minnesota and Washington. Greta was very creative and talented, with her hands making memories and heirlooms for many, with her crocheting and sewing.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; (Leland and Leora Beavers), brother and sister-in-law, Leland (Floyd) and Shirley Beavers; sister: (Leona Shepard); granddaughter: (Cheryl Dailey); niece: (Julie Beavers); and companion, (Gene McKenna).

She is survived by her seven children: Holly Shayka, Las Vegas Nev., Etta Bernu (Mike), Dalbo, Minn., Audrey Squires (Rob), Clarkston, Wash., Jo Ford (John), Wasilla, AK, Tyrone Thompson, Backus, Brett Thompson (Paula), Phoenix, Ariz., Fayette Locnikar (Pete), Pillager, and Gene McKenna's children, Patty Whaley (Dan), Clarkston, Wash., and Mike McKenna, Clarkston, Wash; grandchildren: Keely, Jesse, Corey, Curtis, Shelly, Jason, Tyrell, Jake, Quinton, Wynter, Levi, Wyatt, Denise, and Ashley; several great-grandchildren; brothers: Roland (Wilma) Beavers, Backus, Van (Carol) Beavers, Staples, Guy (Carla) Beavers, Minot N.D., and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2007 at the Kline Funeral Home in Pine River, and also in Clarkston, Wash., with burial in Clarkston, WA .

Leora "Billie" Gutz

Pequot Lakes

Leora "Billie" Gutz, age 81, of Pequot Lakes, went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 9, 2007, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
She is survived by her children, Douglas and Nancy. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; brother, Clarence Douglas; sister, Kay; and, most recently, sister, Frances.

Billie was strong in faith and spirit. She was a woman of many talents, most notably her mastery of the art of chair caning, and her beautiful, powerful voice and love of traditional hymns. She will be greatly missed and always remembered.

Private family memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.

Rosita Gail Cronk

Pine River

Rosita Gail Cronk, 69, of Pine River, passed away Nov. 7, 2007. She was born Rosita Korby in Bumbletown, Mich. on Sept. 7, 1938. She was preceded in death by her father, Russell Korby, and mother, Lydia Korby, of Allouez, Mich.
She is survived by her husband, Ken Cronk; brother, Russell Korby; sons, Mark Englund, Randall Cronk (Geraldine), Reid Cronk (Joyce); and daughters Rachel Walker (Andy), Diane Schmitz (Dan), Kathy Moe (Eric), Lisa Jundt (Glen), Kenda Wheeler (Brian); 21 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

A college graduate, she worked mostly in the automotive administration business and many years in the newspaper field in Perham, Two Harbors, and Pine River. She loved the outdoors, was an avid hunter among other activities, also a 26-year member of Post 613 American Legion Auxiliary.

Due to family military commitments, she wished to be cremated with memorial following immediately. Her ashes will be cast to the wind in the woods at a later date. She had many friends and considered them all as part of her family. A Celebration of Life was held on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007, with many of her family and friends attending.

Shirley (Moresette) and George R. Hauser

Pine River

Shirley (Moresette) and George R. Hauser, of Pine River, died peacefully at their daughter's home in Florence, Ariz. Shirley, 73, on Monday, Nov. 5, 2007 and George, 78, on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007.
Funeral services will be Monday, June 2, 2008 at Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids. 218-326-6505

Robert William Field

Crosslake

Robert William Field, 62, of Crosslake, died on Nov. 9, 2007, at his home.
He was born on Jan. 14, 1945 in Charles City, Iowa to Herman and Inez (Rolfes) Field. He married Candace Rider on Nov. 19, 1968 in Watertown, S.D.

He is survived by his wife, Candy; one son, Gale (Deanna) Field of Fall Creek, Wis.; four daughters, Tammy Gossett of Brooklyn Park, Sarah (Matt) Barnum of Crosslake, Leanne (Steve) Lamburtus of Mesa, Ariz., Teresa (Daryl) Foster of Chandler, Ariz.; one brother, Butch (Patti) Field of Pequot Lakes; one sister, Betty Wetter of Backus; 15 grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, June Evenson and Evelyn Probasco.

Funeral services were Nov. 14 at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.

Jerry S. Barrons

Pine River

Jerry S. Barrons, Pine River, formerly of Brainerd, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007 at the Good Samaritan Center in Pine River at the age of 79. He was born in Cadillac, Mich. on May 23, 1928. No services will be held for Jerry. Arrangements will be with Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd.

Lynn L. Martin

Grand Rapids, formerly Longville

Lynn L. Martin, 85, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Longville, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007 at Wendigo Pines Assisted Living.

Milton Kottschade

Pequot Lakes

Milton Kottschade, age 57, of Pequot Lakes, passed away Friday, Aug. 31 near Pequot Lakes. He was born Jan. 16, 1950, in Brainerd to Louis and Vernie Kottschade.
He is survived by daughters: Senoah Molash, Shanna Molash, Stephanie Molash; grandchildren: Mikyla Sundstrom, Nevaeh Helps; brothers: Myron Kottschade, Cecil Kottschade, Robert Kottschade, Harvey Kottschade; sisters: Sarah Wermter, Donna Rivard, Doris Campbell, and Nora Jabas.

He was preceded in death by sisters: Grace DeCamp, June Mapes, Leona Kottschade; and brother, Basil Kottschade.

Services will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6 at Pleasant Hill Church, rural Pequot Lakes, with Pastor Leo Belanger officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Arrangements are with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.

Alice Cecelia (Nolan) Hollenhorst

Brainerd area

Alice Cecelia Nolan Hollenhorst, age 93, died on Dec. 15, 2007, at Charter House in Rochester. She was born in Brainerd on April 23, 1914, to James J. Nolan and Eleanor Theviot Nolan. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Dr. Robert W. Hollenhorst, and by seven of her nine children, Dr. Robert Hollenhorst Jr., of Duluth, Michael Hollenhorst (Sandra) of Orono, Mary Lazarus (Bob) of Millbrae, CA, John Hollenhorst (Swantje) of Salt Lake City, James Hollenhorst (Mary) of Saratoga, CA, Kathleen Pohly (Bob) and Thomas Hollenhorst of St. Louis Park. She also is survived by 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Father Mark Hollenhorst of Grand Marais and Stephen Hollenhorst (Carla) of Roseville, and by her parents and four of her six siblings.
After completing high school in Brainerd, Alice received a bachelor's degree from St Cloud Teachers College, where she was co-valedictorian. Alice taught in Dykeman and Jackson. She was married in 1939 and during World War II, Alice stayed at home with two of their children, while Dr. Hollenhorst served in the Pacific as a medical officer. Following Dr. Hollenhorst's discharge from the Army in December 1945, they moved to Rochester, where Dr. Hollenhorst served for many years as an Ophthalmologist and Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic.

Following Dr. Hollenhorst's retirement in 1979, the Hollenhorsts spent their retirement in the Brainerd Lakes area before moving to Charter House in 1996.

Alice was active with the St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary, St. Alice Women's Club, Breezy Point Women's Club, Gull Lake Yacht Club, Pelican Lake Conservation Club, Church of St. John, Cub Scouts, Great Books Program. She was also a Field Supervisor for the 1970 Census.

A Memorial Mass was held on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007, at the Church of St. Johns the Evangelist in Rochester.

Anton Richter

Pequot Lakes

Anton Richter, age 88, passed away on Dec. 17, 2007 at Whispering Pines Nursing Home in Pine River.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Olive, and son, John.

He retired from Land-O-Lakes and moved to Pequot Lakes in 1981.

He is survived by sons, James of Minneapolis and Jerome of Hackensack; grandson, Daniel, of Plymouth; many nieces, nephews, friends, and special friend, Jan Anderson.

He loved his family and friends, along with fishing, gardening and barbecuing. We never knew anyone who could eat as much Lutefisk as Anton. He will be greatly missed.

There will be a private interment at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements were with Kline Funeral Home in Pine River.

Dorothy Olson

Pine River

Dorothy Olson, age 96, of Pine River, passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2007 at Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Center in Pine River. She was born April 2, 1911 in Nebraska to Ben and Bertha Weaver. She married Glenn Olson on Nov. 29, 1928 in Balaton, MN. In 1937, they moved north of Pine River where they farmed for ten years, then moved into Pine River where Dorothy has resided ever since. Dorothy enjoyed reading, sewing and watching the Minnesota Vikings.
She is survived by her sons: Gene Olson (Marlene) of Hackensack, Chuck Olson of Rice; seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; son, Dene; and daughter-in-law, Carole Olson.

Services were Dec. 29 at Pine River United Methodist Church with Pastor Lois Hansen officiating with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Backus.

Arrangements were with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.
