Norman Sorsveen, age 85, of Brainerd, Minnesota passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. The Masonic Lodge will conduct a service at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 16 with the funeral to follow at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter with Reverend Andrew Prin officiating. Friends may call on Friday any time after 10:00 AM. Burial will be in the Elmlawn Cemetery in Elmhurst, Illinois. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter.
Norman Alfred Sorsveen was born on August 20, 1915 in Walker, Minnesota son of John and Olive (Larson) Sorsveen. He moved to Brainerd with his parents at an early age. He married Margie Enemark on September 13, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois. They moved to Chicago where they owned and operated a repair shop and gas station for approximately 10 years. He worked for North Central then Northwest Airlines as a mechanic until his retirement in 1980. He moved to Brainerd in 1994. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Chicago, the Brainerd Masonic Lodge and Lakeside Compass Lodge #739. He enjoyed fishing and traveling.

Norman is survived by a brother Hjalmer Sorsveen of Mattoon, Illinois; sisters Ruth Anderson of Roseville, Minnesota, Violet Lound of Brainerd, Esther Boyd of Shoreview, Minnesota; special friend Leona Douthart of Brainerd. His wife, Margie died in 1967, a son Larry died in 1989, 3 sisters, 4 brothers and his parents preceded him in death.

Ruth Moses, age 61, of Merrifield, Minnesota died Thursday, February 1, 2001 at Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd, Minnesota. Services will be Saturday, February 3, 2001 at 1:00 PM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake, Minnesota with Reverend Tim Smith officiating. Family will receive relatives and friends one hour before the service. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake.
Ruth Moses was born March 6, 1939 in Merrifield daughter of Emil and Hilda (Junk) Lanser. She moved to Big Lake with her family at an early age. She graduated from Big Lake High School. She graduated from St. Cloud Beauty College and Brainerd Beauty School. Ruth was a beautician in the Brainerd area for 10 years. On October 24, 1969 she was united in marriage to Larry Moses in Watertown, South Dakota. They then moved to Big Lake, where Ruth was head cook at Hanke Elementary School in Elk River. They moved to Mission Township where she and her husband owned and operated Moe’s Hardware Store. She was a member of the Merrifield Marathons Snowmobile Club. She enjoyed crafts, crossword puzzles, playing cards, dice and reading.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Larry; son, James (Rawni) Moses of Crosslake, 4 step sons, Jerald (Renee) Moses of Fridley, Minnesota, Timothy (Sharon) Moses of Prior Lake, Minnesota, David (Jennifer) Moses of Big Lake, Curtis (Sarah) Moses of New Brighton, Minnesota; 6 sisters; Geraldine Bye of LeRoy, Minnesota, Rita Brouillard of Clear Lake, Minnesota, Donna Anderson and Evelyn Blackhurst both of Big Lake, Betty LaFond of Mahtowa, Minnesota, Marilyn Lanser of Osseo, Minnesota; a brother Robert Lanser of Iron, Minnesota; 15 grand children. Lois Sandell

Lois Sandell, age 88, of Walker passed away Saturday, March 10, 2001 at the Woodrest Healthcare Center in Walker. Memorial services will be held at Hope Lutheran Church in Walker on Saturday, March 24 at 2:00 PM. Burial will take place at a later date. Memorials are preferred to the Ten Mile Lake Association or the Hope Lutheran Church Building Fund. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter.
Lois E. Sandell was born on March 30, 1912 in Madrid, Iowa daughter of Charles and Sigrid (Carlson) Sundean. She attended school in Boone, Iowa and graduated from Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa. She married Howard Sandell on August 16, 1936 and they lived in Nevada, Iowa. She spent 35 years as a Home Economics teacher before retiring to Ten Mile Lake in 1977. She was a member of P.E.O., Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Ten Mile Lake Association, Deep Portage Conservation Reserve and Hope Lutheran Church.

Lois is survived by her son John Sandell of Walker; 2 grandchildren; a sister Mildred Anderson of Rockford, IL. Her husband Howard and her parents preceded her in death.

Robert K. Souther
April 5, 1928 - Feb 3, 2001

Robert K. Souther, age 72, of Crosslake, died at his home on Saturday, February 3, 2001. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, February 7, 2:00 PM, at the Crosslake Lutheran Church in Crosslake, with Reverend Mark Anderson officiating. Friends may call at the church for 1 hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred, to the St. Joseph’s Medical Center Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Robert Souther was born on April 5, 1928, in St. Paul, to William E. and Thelma O. (Holmes) Souther. He grew up and attended schools in St. Paul, graduating from Wilson High School in 1946. He enlisted in the US Marine Corp, and served in China for 2 years, primarily as a writer for a military newspaper. He was married to his wife of 49 years, Shirley Elmquist, on March 27, 1951 in St. Paul. He graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in 1953, with a degree in hotel and restaurant management. He was employed in this capacity for the next 25 years, working in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Des Moines, Atlanta, and Peoria. In 1978 he and Shirley moved to Crosslake, where Bob worked as real estate agent until his retirement in 1997.

Robert Souther is survived by his wife Shirley; two daughters, April (Boyd) Emerson, Plymouth, and Candi (Peder) Souther-Ronning, Plymouth; a son Robert “Guy” (Angela) Souther, San Gabriel, CA; a sister Joy (Robert) McCleary, Aitkin; a brother William R. (Colleen) Souther, Crosslake; and six grandchildren. His parents and a sister, Cherry, preceded him in death.

Berniece E. Beck

Berniece E. Beck, age 89, of Nevis, Minnesota died Wednesday, February 7, 2001 at the Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids. Services will be at a later date. Memorials are preferred to the Heritage Living Center. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter. Berniece Elizabeth Beck was born on November 14, 1911 in Council Bluffs, IA daughter of Richard and Rhoda (Miller) Bailey. Berniece grew up andattended school in Council Bluffs. She married Ernest William Beck on January 4, 1928 in Omaha, NE. She was a homemaker. She and her husband moved to Nevis in 1950 where they owned and operated Balmy Beach Resort on Lake Belle Taine until her death. Berniece is survived by her 2 sons, Donald L. Beck of Nevis, MN and Lewis P. Beck of Minneapolis, MN; 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Her husband Ernest passed away May 1, 2000, her parents, 3 brothers and 3 sisters also preceded her in death. Carol Hanson, age 52, of Brainerd, died on Friday, February 9, 2001 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Services will be at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, February 13, 2001, with Reverend Dwight Johnson officiating at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Tuesday. Arrangements are with Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
Carol Jean Hanson was born on September 18, 1948, in Des Moines, IA to Arthur Palmquist and Emily Ione Hanson. She grew up and attended schools in St. Paul, MN. Following school she traveled around a lot, working as a Dietician throughout the area. In 1990, she moved to Brainerd where she worked at Bang Printing for several years. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping, fishing and walking.

She is survived by her mother, Emily Hanson of Fort Ripley; 3 sons: Joey Sande, Robbie Sande and Freddy Sande; 3 brother: El Roy Block of Fort Ripley, Larry Palmquist of White Bear Lake, MN and John Palmquist of St. Paul, MN; 3 sisters: Cheryl Brown of Leader, MN, Nancy Patterson of Brainerd and Beverly Eberle of Brainerd; 3 grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Lester O. Lageson

Lester Lageson, age 89, of Brainerd, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 17, at the Faith Lilac Way Church in Robbinsdale, MN, with Reverend Peter Lundholm officiating. Friends and family may call at the church for 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Minneapolis.
Lester Lageson was born on January 7, 1912, in Ellendale, MN, to John and Ingaborg “Isabelle” Torgerson Lageson. As a child he moved with his family to South Minneapolis. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, and earned a degree in Accounting from the University of Minnesota. He was married to Ina Nordberg in Robbinsdale on May 18, 1935. During the war years Lester worked for General Mills. He left there for an accounting position with a wholesale grocer. He worked in this capacity until his retirement in the 1980’s. Last October, Lester and Ina moved to Brainerd, to be near their family. He loved to golf and belonged to several country clubs. He also liked cars. He was a kind, polite man who loved his family and was very proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments.

Lester Lageson is survived by his wife Ina; two daughters, Sheila (Bert) Holtan of Las Vegas and Brainerd, and Susan (Mark) Lundholm of Palatine, IL; a son Dean Lageson, at home; 6 grandchildren, Cindy Jackson, Tim, Keith, and Heidi Holtan, and Karl and Alina Lundholm; and 3 great-grandchildren, Sarah and Anna Jackson, and McKinley Holtan. Robert E. Floyd, Jr.
July 28, 1962 - February 20. 2001

Robert Floyd, Jr., age 38, of Staples, MN, died Tuesday, February 20, 2001, at the Greater Staples Hospital. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, February 24th, at 3:00 PM, at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples, with Pastor Stanley Myers officiating. Robert Eugene Floyd, Jr., was born on July 28, 1962, in Seattle, WA, to Robert E. and Caroline M. (Geelan) Floyd. He grew up and attended schools in Seattle, WA. Following graduation from high school he moved to Reno, NV, where he lived for several years. He moved to Leader, MN in 1992 and worked in the area as a construction contractor and welder. On June 22, 1996, he married Robin Bandy-Marshall in Apple Valley, MN. They lived in Staples, MN since 1999. He was an avid collector of Coca Cola products. He enjoyed fishing and remote control airplanes.

Robert is survived by his wife, Robin Floyd; two step-sons, Dustin Marshall and Dylan Marshall, both of Staples, MN; a step-daughter, Kelsey Marshall also of Staples; his mother, Caroline Kilby of Vancouver, WA; and 2 sisters, Sherri Floyd of Vancouver, WA and Kristi Kilby-Wilson, also of Vancouver. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert E. Floyd, Sr.

Edward O. Knafla
March 8, 1906 - Nov 11, 2000

Edward Knafla, age 94, of Brainerd, Minnesota died on Saturday, November 11, 2000, at the Bethany Good Samaritan Home in Brainerd. Services will be on Tuesday, November 14, 2000 at 1:00 PM at Bethany Good Samaritan Village Chapel in Brainerd with Reverend Paul Biegner officiating. Visitation will be 1 hr. before the service at the chapel. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Brainerd. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter.
Edward O. Knafla was born on March 8, 1906 in Gilmanton Township, Benton County in Minnesota son of Fred and Augusta (Golembeck) Knafla. He was raised in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. Edward was united in marriage to Alma Leyk on November 15, 1928 in Sauk Rapids. Following his marriage they moved south of Brainerd where they cleared the land in the early 30’s where they farmed and raised their family. He retired from the farm in 1972. They built a retirement home on the farm and continued to live there until his auto accident in the spring of 1996. He’s been a resident of Bethany Good Samaritan Village. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Edward enjoyed farming, gardening, helping the neighbors farm, fishing, helping his children and grandchildren.

Edward is survived by: 2 daughters, Joyce Strang of Brainerd, Randy Matsen of Walker, Minnesota; a sister Martha Repulski of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota; a brother Louis Knafla of Redwood City, California; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. His wife, son, Gordon, parents, 3 sisters and 5 brothers preceded him in death.

Ione McGuire
Feb 21, 1909 - Feb 22, 2001

Ione McGuire, age 92, of Brainerd, Minnesota passed away on February 22, 2001 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. Services will be at 2:00PM Monday, February 26, 2001 at St. Francis Catholic in Brainerd with Father Seamus Walsh officiating. Family and friends may call 1 hour before the service at the church. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter.
Ione Sibet McGuire was born on February 21, 1909, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to George and Ella (Meyers) Sibet. It was in Minneapolis that she grew up and attended schools. She later lived and raised her family in St. Paul. She worked for Sears and the State of Minnesota. In 1981, she moved to Brainerd to be close to her son. Ione volunteered through RSVP and at Central Lakes College Theatre Department for 20 years before retiring at the age of 91.

Ione is survived by her daughter-in-law Mary Sue McGuire; 5 grandchildren, Scott McGuire of Lino Lakes, Minnesota Cheryl Sticha of Faribault, Minnesota, Pamela Hopkins of Pine River, Amy Huntsinger of Brainerd and Heather Burtard of Minneapolis, Minnesota; 8 great-grandchildren, Angela, Jessica, Johnathon, Lee Donavon, Veronica Hopkins, David Marie, Mathew and Amber Burtard. She was preceded in death by her son Charles Arthur McGuire and her parents.

Ione’s family asks that friends write a memorial letter of experiences and memories of Ione to be shared at the visitation and with family members. In lieu of flowers a donation to either; St. Francis Catholic Church, Central Lakes College Theatre Department or Cancer Research be made in her name. Agnes Kranz

Agnes Kranz, age 96, of Brainerd, Minnesota died on Tuesday, February 20, 2001, at Trillium Lutheran Assisted Social Service in Brainerd. Services will be Saturday, March 3, 2001 at 12 PM at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd with Father Seamus Walsh officiating. Family and friends may call 1 hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in the Baxter City Cemetery. Arrangements are with Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
Agnes Kranz was born April 21, 1904 in Oaks, North Dakota. She was an elementary teacher for over 40 years. Agnes and her husband, Bill moved to Baxter where Agnes taught at the Baxter Elementary School for over 15 years. Agnes was the devoted wife of her deceased spouse, Bill Kranz for 71 years. Agnes possessed a deep love for people, travel and a good old-fashioned game of cards. She will be deeply missed.

Agnes is survived by 3 grandsons, Bill (Bonnie) Kranz, Michael Kranz, Steve (Kathy) Kranz and 9 great grandchildren. Her husband, William G, parents son Robert Allen Kranz and grandson Robert Allen preceded her in death. Submitted by Brenny Funeral Chapel (218) 828-5051
