Ralph Crose
August 27, 1913 - February 8, 2002

Place of Funeral: -- Crosslake Evangelical Free Church -- Wednesday, February 13, 2002

Ralph W. Crose, age 88, a resident of Woodland Apartments in Brainerd, MN formerly of Crosslake, MN died Friday, February 8, 2002 at his home. Services will be held on Wednesday at 1:00 PM at the Crosslake Evangelical Free Church with Reverend Jim Woldhuis officiating, burial will be at the Pinewood Cemetery in Crosslake. Military honors will be provided by Crosslake American Legion Post #500. The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 till 7 PM on Tuesday at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake.
Ralph Crose was born on August 27, 1913 in Little Falls, son of the late, Phillip and Rose Crose. He was united in marriage to Bettie Colehour on January 13, 1936 in Superior, WI. He entered the United States Navy and served on the USS Benevolence, a hospital ship, during World War II. He was on the Minneapolis Fire Department for 26 years retiring as Captain. They moved to Crosslake in 1974, then to Brainerd in 2001. He was a member of the Masonic Cataract Lodge #2 AF & AM in Richfield, MN, the Pensioners Association and a charter member of the Crosslake Evangelical Free Church. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, tying fly-fishing lures, and golfing.

Ralph Crose is survived by his wife, Bettie; 1 daughter, Connie (Dale) Erickson of Crosslake; 3 sons, Lawrence (Carol) Crose of Duluth, MN, Richard (Debra) Crose of Bloomington, MN, James (Janice) Crose of Edmund, Oklahoma; 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Barbara; 1 infant son, Charles; his parents; 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Gertrude M. Shankey

Place of Funeral: -- St. Mary'v Catholic Church -- April 3, 2002

Gertrude M. (Miller) Shankey, age 86, of Brainerd, MN died Sunday, March 24, 2002 at her home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on April 3, 2002 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in LeCenter, MN at 1:00 PM, officiated by Father Ray Moniscor. Interment will be in the Janesville, MN Cemetery. Arrangements are with Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
Gertrude Mary Lynch was born December 12, 1915 in St. Claire, MN, to Louis and Rose (Ireland) Lynch. She grew up and attended school in St. Claire. She was married to Edward Miller in St. Claire in 1937, and was later widowed in 1962. She moved to Brainerd in 1979. She enjoyed visiting with friends, Bingo, playing cards, and crocheting. She made many beautiful quilts and donated them to local charities.

Gertrude is survived by four daughters: Rose (Francis) Meyer of LeCenter, Anne Schultz of Northfield, Mary Dvorak (Jim Legg) of Henderson, and Helen (LaDon) Morsching of Waterville; a son Leo (Jodi) Miller of Fountain; a sister Eileen Trio of Mapleton; a brother Henry Lynch of St. Paul; 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 6 step-great-grandchildren. Her parents, husbands Edward Miller, Charlie Meyers, and Martin Shankey, and a brother David preceded her in death.

Lavada Arlis Erickson
July 27, 1940 - March 25, 2002

Lavada A. Erickson, age 61, of Backus, died Monday, March 25, 2002 at Bethany Good Samaritan Village. A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at 2:00 PM at the Nazarene Church in Backus. Arrangements are with Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
Lavada Arlis Erickson was born July 27, 1940 in North Dakota, to David Gramm and Edna (Betz, Gramm) Erickson. She grew up in North Dakota, and moved to Minnesota following her marriage to Ivan Reinhardt. She moved to Backus in 1979 with her second husband, Tom Erickson. She enjoyed the outdoors, including fishing, feeding the hummingbirds, and working in her flower garden.

Lavada Erickson will be deeply missed by her daughter, Kathleen (Brian) Medenwaldt of Brainerd, her mother, Edna Erickson of Backus; her brother, Milo (Sharon) Gramm of ND; her three grandchildren, Justin, Trevor and Leanna Medenwaldt; and her 4 step children, Tammy, Tommy, Toni and Todd.

Mike McCormick

Michael “Mike” McCormick, age 59, a resident of rural Merrifield, (Horseshoe Lake) died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at his home, surrounded by his family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, May 14 at 10:30 AM at the Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Crosslake with Father Dennis Hoffman officiating. Burial will be in the Mission Cemetery. Visitation is Monday, May 13 from 5 - 8 PM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake. Memorials are preferred to St. Joseph’s Hospice. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake.
Mike McCormick was born on November 9, 1942 in St. Louis, Missouri to Vernon and Clara (Davis) McCormick. Following his graduation from high school in St. Louis, he entered the United States Army and served in Berlin, Germany. Following his honorable discharge he was united in marriage to Pat Loechl on December 30, 1967 in St. Louis. He was front desk manager at the Sheraton Jefferson Hotel in St. Louis. They moved to Morningside Resort on Pelican Lake that they managed for 3 years. They then moved to Horseshoe Lake in 1976 where he’s been a resident till his death. He worked at Culligan Water Conditioning in Brainerd for 17 years. They also owned and operated McCormick Wholesale Bait for approximately 15 years. Mike enjoyed fishing, sports and collecting trains.

Mike is survived by his wife Pat, two daughters, Monica (Andy) Graham of Golden Valley and Nicole McCormick of Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Anthony Rolfes

Anthony “Tony” Rolfes, age 76, of Mission Township died Friday, May 24, 2002 at the St. Cloud Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, May 28, at 10:30 AM at Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Crosslake, with Reverend Dennis Hoffman and Reverend Bob Rolfes officiating. Friends may visit on Monday, May 27, from 5-8:00 PM at Immaculate Heart Catholic Church, and for one hour prior to the Mass on Tuesday. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Freeport. Arrangements are with Brenny Funeral Chapel of Crosslake.
Anthony Joseph Rolfes was born November 9, 1925 in Freeport, Minnesota, to Henry and Wilhemina (Schulte) Rolfes. He graduated from the Dunwoody Institute and became a journeyman electrician. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was married to Rosemary “Rosie” Kerfeld, his wife of 48 years, on May 3, 1954, in St. Rosa, Minnesota. The couple lived in St. Cloud, where Tony worked for Al’s Electric until 1966, when they moved to Freeport. They lived and raised their family on a hobby farm, and Tony did industrial electrician work from his union shop. In 1990 Tony and Rosie moved permanently to their vacation home on Horseshoe Lake in Mission Township. Although he was retired, Tony continued to work in his “shop”, making and fixing things. He enjoyed fishing and especially enjoyed his grandchildren. He was a member of Immaculate Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #9657, and was a 50-year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a member of the St. Rose Holy Name Society and the St. Joseph Society of Freeport. He belonged to the American Legion, Post 0482 in Albany, the IBEW Local #343, the Mission Possible Senior Group, and the Brainerd Senior Center. He was also a member of the Horseshoe Lake Property Owner’s Association.

Anthony “Tony” Rolfes is survived by his wife Rosie; two daughters Cindy (Marc) Sheldon of Forest Lake, and Mary (Gary) Sunderman of St. Joseph; four sons Dan (Pam) Rolfes of St. Joseph, Butch (Deb) Rolfes of Brainerd, Kevin (Ann) Rolfes of Luxemburg, and John Rolfes of St. Augustine, FL; a sister Alice Silbernick of Cold Spring; two brothers Harvey (Sally) Rolfes of Minneapolis, and Alcuin Rolfes of South Haven; and 11 grandchildren. His parents, four sisters Delores, Marcellus, Marie, and Laverne, three brothers Amandus, Jim, and Allen, and a grandchild Cassie preceeded him in death.

Miriam C. Sapp
April 20, 1908 - January 22, 2001

Miriam Sapp, age 92, of Staples, MN, died Monday morning, January 22, 2001, at the Greater Staples Hospital. Services will be 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 27, 2001 at the Staples Congregational Church with Reverend Muriel Hachfeld officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Greater Staples Hospice. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.
Miriam Cordelia Sapp was born on April 20, 1908 in Staples, MN to Harry and Florence (Quimby) Tyndall. It was here that she grew up and attended schools, graduating from Staples High School. In 1932, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Sapp in Staples. They made their home on a farm just south of Staples where they owned and operated Oak Hill Dairy for many years. Miriam was a member of the Staples Congregational Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, where she was a past-president of the 6th District, and was a member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed knitting, embroidery and crewel.

Miriam is survived by her son, Lloyd A. Sapp of Roseville, MN; 2 daughters: JoAnne Schmidt of Milton, WA and Donna Wahlberg of Staples; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; 2 brothers: Allen Tyndall of Staples and David Tyndall of Chula Vista, CA. Her parents; her husband, Lloyd; her daughter, Georgene Falldorf and her brother, Byron, preceded her in death.

Timber Faith Curtis

Timber Faith Curtis, infant daughter of Terryll and DeeAnn (Carlson) Curtis, Crosslake, Minnesota was stillborn at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd, Minnesota on Sunday, January 7, 2001. Funeral service will be Tuesday, January 9 at 2:00 PM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake with Reverend Shawn McAlpine officiating. Burial will be in the Pinewood Cemetery in Crosslake. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Crosslake.

Andrew Kalata, age 83, of Pillager, Minnesota passed away Monday, February 26, 2001 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd, Minnesota. Services will be Friday, March 2, 2001 at 11:00 AM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter, Minnesota with Reverend Robert Osell officiating. Family will receive relatives and friends starting at 9:00 AM at the chapel. Burial will follow in the Wildwood Cemetery in Pillager. Brainerd American Legion Post # 255 will provide the Honor Guard. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter.
Andrew Joseph Kalata was born October 29, 1917 in Minneapolis, Minnesota son of Joseph and Nettie Kalata. He was raised in north Minneapolis. He joined the United States Army in 1940 and was honorably discharged in May 1945. Andrew was united in marriage on December 31,1947 in Columbia Heights to Florence Bashore. He worked in building construction most of his working life. They moved to Pillager in 1982 where he has been a resident till his death. He enjoyed fishing and painting pictures. He was a member of the Robbinsdale American Legion.

Andrew is survived by his wife Florence; 2 brothers, Joseph Kalata of Eagan, Minnesota, George Kalata of Seattle, Washington; 4 sisters Genevieve Woodburn of Kansas City, Missouri, Agnes Mickelson and Florence Peterson both of Fridley, Minnesota, Evelyn Bolton of Albuquerque, New Mexico, many nieces and nephews. A brother John and 2 sisters Mary and Helen preceded him in death.

Milo Michealson
July 27, 1917 - November 13, 2001

Milo A. Michealson, age 84, of Nisswa, died Tuesday, November 13, 2001 at Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd. Memorial services will be Saturday, November 17, 1:00 PM, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter, with Reverend Jennifer Wilson officiating. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Nisswa with military honors provided by the Nisswa American Legion, Post 627. Arrangements are by Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
Milo Arlington Michealson was born on July 27, 1917 in Minneapolis, to Hjalmer and Mabel (Bjorglund) Michealson. He grew up and attended school in Minneapolis. He completed a tour of duty in the Army Air Corp and was honorably discharged in 1945. He was married to Rose Zarling, and was widowed in 1961. He married Clara Mae Perry, his wife of 32 years, in 1964. They moved to the family cabin near Nisswa in 1968. Milo worked as the Police Chief in Nisswa and later as a Crow Wing County Deputy. He belonged to Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion in Nisswa.

Milo Michealson is survived by two daughters, LaDrene Anderson of North Branch and Kathy Anderson of North Branch; four sons, Richard Michealson of Nisswa, Ken Michealson of Muriettia, CA, Jerry Michealson of Albequerque, NM, and Robert Michealson of Harris; a sister, Gail Totall of Nisswa; 18 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 7 step-great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, Rose and Clara Mae, a daughter, Bertie Ibberson, and a brother.

Hart Phillip Graeber

Hart P. Graeber was born on September 28, 1927 in Minneapolis, Minnesota son of Howard and Alice (Bodin) Graeber. He and his family lived in Cambridge, and Lyndale, Minnesota. Hart graduated from Mound High School, and from the University of Minnesota with a BS in Animal Husbandry. He served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the USS Alabama. Following his honorable discharge he was united in marriage to Myra Lemmerman on March 18, 1950 in Carver County, Minnesota. He worked for the State of Minnesota as a nursery inspector. Then for the United States Department of Agriculture, plant pest control, for 30 years retiring in 1987. They moved to Perch Lake in September of 1991. He enjoyed reading, the outdoors, gardening, fishing, canoeing and camping.

Hart is survived by his wife, Myra; 2 daughters, Nancy (Ken) Ramler of Sartell, Minnesota, Peggy (Virgil) Plath of Cold Spring, Minnesota; 2 sisters Jean Rasmussen of Maple Plain, Minnesota, Joan Kutzer of Weslaco, TX formerly of Outing, Minnesota; 3 granddaughters Heidi, Kerry and Shari. His parents preceded him in death.

Lawrence James Dill, age 73, of Brainerd, Minnesota died on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 in Fargo, North Dakota. Services will be on Saturday, February 2, 2002 at 1:00 PM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter with Reverend Rory Swenson officiating. Visitation will be Friday, January 31 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM and 1 hour before the service at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Brainerd. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter.
Lawrence James Dill was born on April 12, 1928 in Crete, North Dakota to Bert and Clara (Kraig) Dill. He was raised on the farm in Crete and attended and graduated from Oaks. In 1954 he was united in marriage to Mae West. Following his marriage he farmed and worked at Melroe in Gwinner, ND. They moved to St. Paul, MN in the early 60’s. On June 24, 1965 he was united in marriage to Annamae “Gloria” Harkins in St. Paul. They lived in Roseville where he worked in construction and belonged to the carpenters union. They moved to Brainerd upon their retirement 10 years ago, and spent their winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. He was recently planning to move to Sidney, MT. He enjoyed traveling, and was an excellent finish carpenter.

Lawrence is survived by 2 daughters, Carmen Parks of Sidney, MT, Marcy Froemel of St Paul, MN; 5 sons, Larry Dill of Sidney, MT, Gary (Dorothy) Dill of Big Lake, MN, Bill Harkins of Vadnais Heights, MN, Gene Harkins of Vadnais Heights, MN Chet Harkins of Fresno, CA; 3 sisters Marge (Carl) Eschenbacher of Baxter, MN, Irene (Lawrence) Larson of Verona, ND, Lorene (Doyle) Woodward of Billings, MO; 1 brother DuWayne Dill of Crete, ND; 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. His 1st wife Mae, 2nd wife Annamae, 2 sons, Michael Harkins, Craig Dill and his parents preceded him in death.
