Lisa Elizabeth Wagner, age 31, of Plymouth, Minnesota, formerly of Staples, died Thursday, June 13, 2002 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. A memorial service will be held at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 7180 Hemlock Lane, Maple Grove, MN on Friday, June 21, at 12:00 noon, with visitation starting at 11:00. Memorial donations may be made to the Lisa Wagner Memorial Scholarship at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and should be sent to David W. Stassen, 10400 Viking Drive, Suite #550, Eden Prairie, MN 55344. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter.
Lisa E. Wagner was born on September 21, 1970 in Staples, to Frank Martin and Marilyn Jean (Deering) Wagner. Lisa graduated from Osseo High School in 1989. She accepted an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy, but chose to complete her education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ. She graduated in 1994 with a BS in Aeronautical Science, minor in Aviation Safety. A nearly-completed Master of Science-Aeronautical Science degree, specializing in Aviation Operations, was another accomplishment of Lisa’s short life. From 1994 to 1998 she was a Flight Instructor, Assistant Chief Pilot, and worked in Flight Standards at Embry-Riddle. Lisa became employed as a pilot by Mesaba Airlines-Northwest Airlink on June 26, 1998. She attained her Captain’s rating in March 2001, and was based in Detroit. Lisa, a non-smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer April 5, 2001, and challenged the disease with determination and dignity. The American Cancer Society awarded Mesaba Airlines the 2001 Employer of The Year Award for their overwhelming support.

Her mother Marilyn, grandmother Leona Deering, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and her Mesaba Airlines family survive Lisa. Her father James, grandfather Leo Deering, and grandparents Frank & Elizabeth Wagner preceded her in death.

Roberta "Berta" Jones
June 30, 1933 - June 20, 2002

Roberta “Berta” Ann Jones, age 68, of Brainerd died Thursday, June 20, 2002 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd. Memorial services will be Thursday, June 27, 2:00 PM, at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter. Interment will be at the Baxter City Cemetery. Friends may visit on Wednesday, June 26, from 5-8:00 PM, at Brenny Funeral Chapel. Arrangements are with Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
Roberta Ann Peck was born June 30, 1933, in Brainerd, to Wesley C. and Mary “Florence” (Conrad) Peck. She grew up and attended school in Brainerd. She was married to Emory “Buck” Jones in Brainerd on October 17, 1953. They made several moves, to California, Colorado, and Oregon, but always returned to Brainerd. Berta had lived in Brainerd since 1966. Years back she had worked as a waitress at the Eagles Club and at the Paul Bunyan Motel, but primarily worked caring for her home and family. She enjoyed playing Bingo, eating out, and shopping.

Roberta Ann Jones is survived by two daughters Wendy (Wayne) Vervalin and Twyla (Ricky) Bourassa, both of Brainerd; two sons Robert (Teri) Jones and Randy Jones, also of Brainerd; four sisters Rella Faye Clark and Joleen Legris, both of Creswell, OR, Charleen LaCasse of Blaine, and Janice Bourassa of Brainerd; two brothers Wesley Peck and Warren Peck, both of Creswell, OR; and four grandchildren Ricky and Ryan Bourassa and Tanya and Loren Jones. Her parents, her husband, and a brother Clifford Peck preceded Roberta in death.

Roger "Casey Jones" Awsumb
July 10, 1928 - July 15, 2002

Place of Funeral: -- Crosslake & St. Paul -- 7/18/02 & 7/19/02

Roger Leonard Awsumb, age 74, of rural Merrifield, known to generations of Minnesota children as “Casey Jones”, died Monday, July 15, 2002 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, July 18, at the Crosslake Presbyterian Church in Crosslake, Minnesota at 11AM. Friends may visit on Wednesday, July 17, at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake from 5 - 7 PM. Additional services are planned for Friday, July 19, at Macalester College in St. Paul at 11 AM at the Weyerhauser Chapel. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake.
Roger Awsumb was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on July 10, 1928 to Ardin and Petra Awsumb. He graduated from Central High School in 1946, served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1947, and graduated from Macalester College in 1950. He also graduated from Brown Institute in 1951. He began his broadcasting career in 1948 as an announcer at WBOM at Macalester College in St. Paul, where he later became program director and manager. In 1951 he became announcer and program director at KDLM in Detroit Lakes. He moved to television in 1952, joining WCCO TV as a floor man announcer and director. He took a similar position at WMIN TV in 1953. In 1954 he created the popular “Casey Jones” character, a railroad engineer who invited children to join him for lunch, skits, songs, and cartoons. The show ran on WMIN and WTCN TV (now KARE TV) until 1973, and came back to television on WFBT TV (now WFCT TV) from 1983 to 1985. In 1984 Awsumb “retired” to the Brainerd Lakes area, where he joined the staff of KLKS Radio. He worked full time as a broadcaster with KLKS until 1993, and continued part time until his death. Roger was a member of the Crosslake Presbyterian Church. He was named Outstanding Broadcast Personality by the Minnesota Broadcasters Association in 1995 and was inducted into the Museum of Broadcasting Hall of Fame as a charter member in 2001. He was also recently honored as “Distinguished Citizen” by Macalester College in St. Paul.

Awsumb is survived by a daughter Nancy (Don) Nelson of Shoreview; two sons Robert (Lisa) Awsumb of St. Paul and John Casey Awsumb of Minneapolis; a stepson Greg (Gwen) Chapman; a sister Doris Forsberg of St. Paul; two brothers Ken (Lois) Awsumb of Bemidji and Ardin W. Awsumb of San Gabriel, CA; seven grandchildren; and special friend Irene Larson. His parents, a daughter Amy, and a granddaughter Lindsay Daniels preceded him in death.

Robert Mehl
Oct 7, 1923 - July 13, 2002

Robert E. Mehl, age 78, of Baxter, died Saturday, July 13, 2002 at Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd. Services will be private. Memorials preferred to the Crosslake Lutheran Church building fund. Arrangements are with Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
Robert Mehl was born October 7, 1923 in Crivitz, Wisconsin, to Edwin and Mae (Pieper) Mehl. He grew up in Chicago, and became a bricklayer. He was married to Muriel Hartwig in Chicago on October 6, 1945. His career in construction spanned more than 40 years, during most of which he was a bricklayer forman. He worked on schools, government buildings, and churches, eventually constructing a public building in every Chicago suburb. He moved to Baxter in 1998, to be closer to his daughter and family. Robert was a member of the Bricklayers Union, Local 58. He enjoyed working on cars, and drove all over the country for enjoyment. He also enjoyed riding his Gold Wing motorcycle.

Robert E. Mehl is survived by his daughter Susan (Darrell) Swanson of Crosslake; granddaughter Laura (Brandon) Pederson of Crosslake; his former wife Muriel of Baxter; three sisters Hazel Mehl and Natica Heinrich of McHenry, IL and Sonia Rutledge of Greenville, SC; and a brother William Johnson of Scottsdale, AZ. His parents and two sisters Alice Rutledge and Pearl Woodworth preceded Robert in death.

Dale Schaub
Dec. 15, 1912 - April 28, 2001

Dale Schaub, age 88, of Ideal Township died at his home on Saturday, April 28, 2001. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 2, at 10:30 AM, at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake. Friends may visit at the Funeral Chapel for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Pinewood Cemetery in Crosslake. Arrangements by Brenny Funeral Chapel of Crosslake.
Dale Thompson Schaub was born on December 15, 1912, in Minneapolis, to Herman F. and Grace (Thompson) Schaub. He grew up and attended schools in South Minneapolis. He was married to Jennie Nelson in Minneapolis on October 25, 1937. The family lived in Bloomington. Dale worked as a truck driver, bus driver, and as a night watchman for Cargill. He and Jennie moved to Ideal Township after his retirement in October, 1977. There, he raised chickens and sold eggs. He also kept busy with yard work. Dale fed a herd of deer in his yard on a regular basis. He enjoyed watching baseball. He also served as a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels.

Dale Schaub is survived by his wife Jennie, a resident of the Crosby Nursing Home; a son, Arthur (Paula) Schaub, Ideal Twp.; 2 daughters, Joanne (Larry) Almstead, Bloomington, and Vivian (James) Frahlin, Bloomington; a sister, Phyllis (Lester) Corcoran, CA; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Doris Sutherland, and a daughter, Grace E. (David) Berry.

John "Jack" Keiffer
Oct 5, 1920 - May 19, 2001

John W. “Jack” Keiffer, age 80, of Crosslake died on Saturday, May 19, 2001, at his home. A Mass of Resurrection will be held in his memory at the Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Crosslake, on Tuesday, May 22 at 11:00 AM, with Reverend Dennis Hoffman officiating. Memorials are preferred, to the American Cancer Society or the Immaculate Heart Building Fund. Arrangements are with Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
Jack Keiffer was born in Minneapolis, MN on October 5, 1920 to Wylie and Maude (Baker) Keiffer. He grew up and attended schools in Minneapolis, graduating from DeLaSalle High School. He worked in the metro area as a business executive, owning his own businesses. He was married to Donna Mae Schlauch in Watertown, SD, on December 21, 1968. The family lived in Plymouth, and began vacationing in Crosslake in 1969. Six years ago he and Donna moved to Crosslake permanently. He was a member of Immaculate Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Lions, and CC Camp.

Jack Keiffer is survived by his wife Donna; three sons, Scott Keiffer of Minnetonka, Michael Keiffer of Roseville, and John Keiffer of Pequot Lakes; two daughters, Cathy Kleven of Plymouth and Terry Draeger of Fairbault; a sister, Delores Haynes of Coon Rapids; 12 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Mennenga
March 4, 1914 - May 24, 2001

Evelyn Francis Mennenga, age 87 of Crosslake, MN passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2001 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN. Services will be on Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at 1:00 PM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake with Reverend Mark Anderson officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the chapel. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake. Evelyn Francis Mennenga was born on March 4, 1914 in Minneapolis, MN daughter of Ernest Wm. and Maude (Hunter) Lind. She grew up in Minneapolis and moved to Coon Rapids, MN with her family. In August of 1952 she was united in marriage to Carl Mennenga in Anoka, MN. She worked for Honeywell for many years. After she retired they traveled together moving to Crosslake 10 years ago. She was a member of the Crosslake Lutheran Church.
Evelyn is survived by a sister, Muriel (Leslie) Shoff of Santa Clara, CA and a brother Ralph (Ann) Line of Clearwater, FL. Her husband, parents and a brother preceded her in death.

Jimmy M. Thompson
Jan 16, 1937 - May 28, 2001

Jimmy M. Thompson, age 64, of Brainerd, died on Monday, May 28, 2001, at the Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd. A gathering of friends and family will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 2, 2001, with services at 1:30 PM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter.
Jimmy Marvin Thompson was born on January 16, 1937, in Casselton, North Dakota, to Albert and Beatrice (Brieland) Thompson. He moved with his family to Brainerd at the age of 16. He attended school in Brainerd and later entered the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Brainerd and worked as a mill right until his retirement in the early 1980’s. Jimmy was a dedicated fisherman and also enjoyed bow hunting. He also enjoyed singing with area bands and time spent with his best friend, Fred the Beagle.

Jimmy is survived by family and friends: Audrey & Ken Minor, Gladys M. Quigley, Jerry & Diane Thompson, Vince Anderson, Bev Sullivan, 3 nephews, 1 niece, as well as special grand-nephews and grand-nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Beatrice; brother-in-law, James Quigley and friend, Dave Barnum.

Virginia "Ginger" Brauer
January 12, 1944 - June 5, 2001

Virginia "Ginger" Brauer, age 57, of rural Nisswa, MN, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at her home. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, June 8th, at 1:30 PM, at the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa, with Reverend Len Anderson officiating. Friends may call an hour before the service at the church. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Brainerd/Baxter. Memorials are preferred to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa. Virginia "Ginger" Brauer was born on January 12, 1944, in Fargo, ND, to Norton and Mary Elizabeth "Beth" (Kyte) Hanson. She graduated from high school in Detroit Lakes, MN in 1961. On August 31, 1963, she married Warren Brauer in Detroit Lakes. She graduated from Moorhead State University in 1966. They lived in Fargo-Moorhead where she was a librarian at the elementary school. The couple moved to Brainerd in 1971 where she worked for School District 181 tutoring students at the Brainerd State Hospital. She worked with her husband beginning in 1976 at Stereo One/Computer One as the advertising manager, and she, with her husband and a partner, built and owned the Last Turn Saloon in Brainerd. In the last 12 years she was active with her husband running Brauer Commercial Real Estate. In addition to instructing aerobics in Brainerd, she was nominated for the Lakes Area Volunteer of the Year Award and was on the Board of Directors of Kinship Partners, where she served as president. She was one of the founders of the Brainerd Lakes Area Business and Professional Women. In July, 2000, the Brainerd Lakes Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation established the Ginger Brauer Breast Cancer Support Award in her honor, of which she was the first recipient. Ginger is survived by her husband, Warren; one son, Jonathan David Brauer of Minneapolis, MN; one daughter, Lisa Marie Burke of Andover, MN; one brother, Jerry Hanson of Albuquerque, NM; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Conrad H. Anderson
September 8, 1935-June 8, 2001

Conrad H. Anderson was born on September 8, 1935 in Grygla, MN, to Hilmer and Marie (Bjerken) Anderson. He graduated from high school in Bemidji. He attended Virginia Community College, earning an Associate Degree. He served in the U.S. Air Force, in the Pacific theater, during the Korean conflict. After his honorable discharge, he met and married Sabina, his wife of 33 years. The Andersons moved with their children to Brainerd in 1970. Conrad worked for many years as an Accountant. He also worked at Potlatch and and Coca-Cola. He is remembered as a man who would do anything for his wife and children. He enjoyed reading various periodicals and novels, particularly those by James Michner. He also fished and hunted deer.
Conrad Anderson is survived by his wife Sabina; a daughter Wendy (William) Inman of Seattle; two sons, Conrad “Andy” (Lisa Protelsch) of Minneapolis, and Chad (Dina Sorenson) of Minneapolis; four sisters, Darlene Buchwitz of Hibbing, Betty Kelman of Champlin Park, Diane Anderson of Grand Rapids, and Barbara (Terry) Casey of Yuma City, CA; two brothers, Gerald Anderson of Grand Rapids, and Ricky Anderson of Minneapolis; and two grandchildren, Fallon, 2, and Jasmine, 3 months. His parents and a sister Carol preceded him in death.

Lila Marie Cole
May 5, 1926 - June 16, 2001

Lila Marie Cole, age 75, of Pillager, MN, died Saturday, June16, 2001, at the Greater Staples Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 21st, at 10:30 AM, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples, with Father Lauren Germann officiating. Burial will follow in the Wildwood Cemetery in Pillager. Relatives will receive friends on Wednesday evening, from 5 to 8 PM, Parish Prayers will be said at 7:45 in the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.
Lila Marie Cole was born on May 5, 1926, near Pillager, MN, to John and Lottie (Whipple) Richmond. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school nearby. On June 7, 1949 she married James Everett Cole in North Dakota. Together they lived and worked in Kenmare, ND until 1959. They returned to the Pillager area where they continued farming. Lila ran the River Street Café in Pillager for several years and also worked at Larson Boats. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, baking, and entertaining family and friends. Lila made donuts for the Sunshine Club, and had several special friends who had emigrated from the Philippines.

Lila is survived by her 3 sons, Jack (Cora) Cole of Fallen, NV, Jim (Barb) Cole of Little Falls, MN, and Joe (Christy) Cole of Aberdeen, SD; a daughter, Janet (Boyd) Loftis of Pillager; 4 Step-Children, Loretta Hendrickson of Wahpeton, ND, Jeanette Lerfald of Kenyon, MN, Marlene (Warren) Kort of Brainerd, MN, and Arnold (Connie) Cole of Pillager; a sister, Julia Gochanour at the Staples Care Center; 18 Grandchildren; 25 Great Grandchildren; 7 Great Great Grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett in 1999; 7 brothers, Bob, Ernest, Clyde, Burt, Jim, Charley, and John; 6 sisters, Mary, Agnes, Gracie, Katy, Bertha, and Virginia; 1 Grandson; 1 Great Granddaughter; and 2 son-in-laws.

George S. Knosalla
December 21, 1921 - June 6, 2001

George Knosalla, age 89, of Staples, MN, passed away on Wednesday, June 6,
George Steve Knosalla was born on December 21st, 1911 in Moran Township of Todd County to Theodore and Josie (Tepley) Knosalla. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. During the war effort he went to the West Coast and worked in the airplane factories. Once he was made aware of his draft status he returned home and joined the Navy. He spent 2 years in the South Pacific and San Diego. Following an injury he was discharged and returned home to central Minnesota. On September 10th, 1945 he married Florence Carlson. Together they lived on and ran the family farm. For a time in the late ‘40s he ran a sign shop as well as worked for the local Minneapolis Moline dealer. Most of his career was spent as a millwright in some remote parts of the world including working on heavy equipment in Iceland and Africa. Closer to home he worked the St. Lawrence Seaway and the missile silos as they were being constructed across the central prairie states of the country. For a year George and Florence returned to Staples where they owned and operated the Spot Café. In the mid ’60s he spent time in the taconite mines near Hibbing and the Monticello power plant. Even in retirement he enjoyed taking on interesting but smaller tasks like the sugar beet processing plants and setting up paper plants. In 1967 they retired to the 11th Crow Wing Lake where he enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. During the fall of 1996 he and Florence moved to their apartment in Staples. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a 45-year member of Carpenter and Millwrights Local 548 in St. Paul, and a life member of both the VFW and the DAV.

George is survived by his wife, Florence; 2 sons, Bruce (Norma) Knosalla of Staples, and David Knosalla of Minnetonka; a brother, Donald Knosalla of Redding, CA; 2 sisters, Evangeline Brown of Whiskey Junction, CA, and Gladys (Carroll) West of San Dimas, CA; as well as 4 grandchildren, Michelle, Andrew, Derrick, and Nicholas. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Beatrice Crossman.
