Duane Hurd, age 75, of Staples, MN, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM, on Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples, with Father Tim Wenzel officiating. Friends may call at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples on Monday evening, from 5 to 8 PM, with prayers being held at 7 PM. Burial will be in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.
Duane Harold Hurd was born on February 15, 1926, in Bagley, MN, to Roy and Lydia (Gehrts) Hurd. It was in Bagley that he grew up and attended school. Following school he entered the U.S. Navy where he proudly served his country in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Minnesota and lived in Keewatin, MN, where he worked in the mines. On July 31, 1949, Duane was united in marriage to Mary Ann Milkovich in Bagley. Duane worked road construction for many years living in many different places throughout the United States. In August of 1965, they moved to Staples where Duane was the Lead Heavy Equipment Instructor at the Staples Area Vocational Institute for 25 years, retiring in 1991. He enjoyed his retirement by fishing, hunting, playing cards and vacationing. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Staples VFW. Above all else Duane enjoyed the precious time spent with wife, children and grandchildren.

Duane is survived by his wife, Mary 'Mitzi'; 2 daughters, Gail (Jerry) Neuschwander of West Plains, MO and Linda (Russ) Ellenbaum of Topeka, KS; 2 sons, Robert (Patrice) Hurd of Bemidji, MN and John (Darcy) Hurd of Champlin, MN; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Twyla Gossack of Winsor, CA and Kaye Einevall of Oakley, CA; and 1 brother, Vern Hurd of Bagley. He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Hurd; his mother, Lydia Stave; his stepfather, Charles Stave and his granddaughter, Mary Jean Neuschwander.

Gladys VanVickle

Place of Funeral: -- Assembly of God Church -- March 19, 2005

Gladys VanVickle, age 87, of Pillager, died Tuesday morning at the Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Saturday, at the Assembly of God Church in Pillager with Rev. Robert Osell officiating. Interment will be in Wildwood Cemetery at Pillager. Friends may call from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Friday at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter and for one hour prior to Services at the Church on Saturday.
Gladys F. VanVickle was born on December 9, 1917, in Lone Tree Township, Chippewa County, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry R. and Emma A. (Woldt) Kuhlman. She was called from this life Tuesday morning at the Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd, MN. She had attained the age of 87 years, 3 months, and 6 days.

Gladys grew up near Raymond, MN, and attended country school there. As a teenager her family moved to the Pillager area. After her schooling she stayed at home to help take care of her sisters after her mother died. On August 21, 1937, she was united in marriage to Orville VanVickle in Pillager, MN. To this union 2 children, Evelyn and Raymond, were born. Gladys and Orville were able to celebrate 38 years together before he died in 1975. After their marriage she stayed at home to be a mother, helpmate, and homemaker. After Orville died Gladys went to work at Madden’s Resort in housekeeping until she retired. She entered Woodland Village in November of last year.

Gladys was a member of First Baptist Church in Pillager where she was active in many groups and functions. She loved to crochet, especially afghans and quilts, garden, and take care of her African violets and houseplants.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Emma; her husband, Orville; and 2 sisters, Dorothy Schumacher and Mabel Goble. Gladys is mourned in passing by her children, Raymond (Delores) VanVickle of Sauk Rapids, MN, and Evelyn Vogel of Pillager; 5 grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild; and a sister, Dora Bolton of Elbow Lake, MN.

George Alex Dennemeyer
November 12, 1904 - February 19, 2005

Place of Funeral: -- Brenny Funeral Chapel, Staples -- February 23, 2005

George A. Dennemeyer, age 100, formerly of St. Paul, died Saturday, February 19, at the Lakewood Care Center in Staples. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples with Father Peter Kirchner, Jr. officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 until time of Services on Wednesday at the Brenny Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Evergreen Hills Cemetery at Staples.

George Alex Dennemeyer was born on November 12, 1904, in Becker Township, rural Staples, MN, the son of Frank and Mary (Kellen) Dennemeyer. He was called from this life on Saturday, February 19, 2005 at the Lakewood Care Center in Staples. He had attained the age of 100 years, 3 months, and 11 days.

George grew up and attended school in the Staples area. After his schooling he moved to St. Paul and became a barber. He enjoyed working at his trade, reading the newspaper diligently so he could converse with his clients on any subject. He enjoyed following sports of all kinds, current events, and gardening. In his backyard he tended tomatoes, flowers, etc. in raised-box gardens. After retiring he moved back to the Staples area to be closer to his family. He lived at the Mary Rondorf Retirement Home until moving into the Lakewood Care Center in October of 2003.George was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary; brothers, John, Walter, Fred and Albert Dennemeyer; sisters, Annie Kircher, Minnie Kurpius, and Gladys Ademietz; and longtime friend and companion, Katherine Cook. George is mourned in passing by his brother, Joe Dennemeyer of Minneapolis; a sister-in-law, Winnie Dennemeyer of Menomonee, WI; and nieces and nephews, Wanda (John) Hassler of Chokio, MN, Karen Dennemeyer of Fresno, CA, Frances Dennemeyer of Salem, VA, and Eugene (Ann) Dennemeyer of Motley, and many great-nieces and nephews.

Gladys Dukowitz

Gladys Lillian Dukowitz was born to Michael Edward and Sarah Elizabeth (Hanson) Smith on July 17, 1936, in St. Paul. She grew up between St. Paul and Philbrook. She attended school and graduated from St. Paul - Hill Murray High School. She was united in marriage to Albert Leroy Dukowitz, Jr. on October 27, 1955 at St. Isidore Catholic Church, Moran Township. They made their home in Philbrook. Gladys enjoyed gardening, babysitting the grandchildren, deer hunting, flower gardens, sewing, puzzles and card games. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Gladys is survived by her children; Sherie (Carl) Jansen, St. Augusta, Vonnie Smith, Philbrook, Judy (Butch Bridge) Dukowitz, Cushing, Linda (Bernard) Hybl, Philbrook, JoDee (Joe) Dvorak, Eagan, Brenda (Kevin) Seefeldt, Verndale, 16 Grandchildren, 2 Great-grandchildren, and one brother, George (Marie) Smith, Little Canada. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, on February 11,1984, an infant son, her parents and 1 brother, Pete Smith

Patricia “Patty” Smith, age 44, a resident Brainerd, died Saturday, December 14, 2002 at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN. Patricia was born to Joseph Dovard and Denver Laverne (Voltz) Norris. She attended schools in Brainerd. Living her entire life in Brainerd she enjoyed spending time with her three devoted cats, Ben, Bunny, and Poop Snot.
Patricia is survived by her mother Denver Laverne Norris of Brainerd, sister Margaret Stuart and husband Deon of Brainerd, brother Joseph Dovard Norris Jr. of Brainerd, 2 nieces and 2 nephews of Brainerd, and her three devoted close companion cats. She was preceded in death by her father.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, 11 AM, Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter with Rev Harvey Peterson of Riverside Union Church of Rural Brainerd. Friends may call from 9 till 11 AM on Wednesday, December 18, 2002 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter. The family requests that memorials be directed to Patty Smith Memorial Fund.

Edward Giese Jr.

Edward Giese Jr, age 82, of Baxter, formerly of Hackensack, died July 14, 2003 at his home. Edward Giese was born on August 2, 1920 to Edward Julius and Anna (Nyquist) Giese Sr. in Chicago, IL. He grew up and attended school in the Chicago area. He was married to Violet Steingraber for 60 years. After his wife’s death he was united in marriage to Donna Rogers on July 25, 1998, in Hackensack. He was an electrician and owned his own business. He belonged to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers #134 and a member of the Moose Lodge in Brainerd. Edward was an avid golfer.
Edward will be missed by his wife, Donna; 4 children, Marsha, Sharon, Vivian and Jerry all of IL; step-children, Michael, Steven, James all of Brainerd, Jeffrey of Warsaw, MO, Trish of Baxter; sister-in-law Sam; several nieces and nephews; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. His first wife Violet, parents and 2 sisters preceded him in death.

Per his request there will be no services held. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter.

Lillian B. Aagard, age 92, of Staples, MN, died Tuesday, September 18, 2001, at the Greater Staples Care Center. Services are scheduled for Saturday, September 22nd, at 11:00 AM, at Faith Lutheran Church in Staples, with Reverend Bradley Skogen officiating. Burial will follow in Esterday Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday evening, from 4 to 8 PM, at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.
Lillian Belle Aagard was born on November 11, 1908, in Wadena County, MN, to Jacob and Sarah (Cook) Fleisher. She grew up and attended country school near Esterday. On June 22, 1929 she married Gerald Knox in Walker, MN. The couple lived and worked on a farm north of Staples until their retirement in 1970. They moved to Staples where Lillian spent some years working at the Senior Center preparing meals. Gerald died on January 28, 1972. Lillian later married Hans Aagard in April of 1977. Following his death on January 2, 1980, she moved to the Staples High Rise. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and enjoyed crocheting and reading.

Lillian is survived by 2 sons, Harold (Elaine) Knox of Holcombe, WI and Sherman (Rose) Knox of Staples, MN; 4 daughters, Jean (Richard) Koppes of Staples, Phyllis Seel of Witchita Falls, TX, Norma Knox of Staples, and Mary Lou (Garry) Flannery of Witchita Falls; a sister, Gertrude Junker of Motley, MN; 25 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and 4 step-children, Charlotte Stemson of Wadena, MN, Leroy Aagard of Wadena, Hans Agaard, Jr of Backus, MN, and Monetta Stordahl of Dennison, MN . She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, an infant son, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters.

Matthew P. Best, 41, of Nisswa, died Friday, July 31, 2009 at St. Josephs Medical Center in Brainerd, MN. Family and friends will celebrate Matthews life at a future date.
Matthew was born August 9, 1967 in Fergus Falls, MN, the son of Larry and Lorraine (Klundt) Best. Matthew worked in construction most of his life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also was a member of a band and assisted the Nisswa American Legion with the playing of Taps.

Matthew will be missed by his wife, Deb; his mother, Lorraine Best, of Conoga Park, CA; his brother, Mark (Missy) Best, of Nisswa; his step-children, Karly and Bryan; and his special furry friends, Sammy and Foxy. He was preceded in death by his father, Larry and his grandparents.

Robin Lewis, age 49, formerly of Staples, passed away Thursday, July30, 2009, at his home in Fargo , ND . Funeral services will be 2:00 PM , Wednesday, August 5, 2009 , at the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Staples. Friends and relatives are invited to gather beginning at noon on Wednesday at the Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Wrightstown Cemetery near Bertha, MN.

Robin Shane Lewis was born November 15, 1959, in Staples, MN, the son of Glenn and Arlene (Junker) Lewis. He graduated from Staples High School in 1979 and attended Staples Vocational School after his graduation. Following his schooling he lived and worked in the Twin Cities for several years before moving to Fargo. It was in 1982 that he married Pamela Ruble of Fargo, ND. In Fargo, he worked for several companies as a forklift operator and most recently he was a forman for a recycling company. He enjoyed fishing, the Twins, was an avid Vikings fan, and played baseball and tennis in his younger years. He will be remembered for being a great lover of many sports, respectful of others, for having a gentle spirit, and being soft hearted.

He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn in 2000. Robin will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Pamela Lewis of Fargo, ND by his children, Sadie Lewis of Fargo and Ryan Lewis of Oregon; his mother, Arlene Lewis of Staples; and siblings, Rhonda (Kevin) Olson of Dent, MN, Renee (Thomas) Smith of Maplewood, MN, Rashell (Robert Curtis) Stave of Deer Park, WI, and Randy Lewis of Motley, MN, along with four nieces and four nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the family, in care of Brenny Funeral Chapel, PO Box 623 , Brainerd , MN 56401 .

Jeffrey A. Grinde, 45, of Pequot Lakes, died Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd, MN. There will be private family services.
Jeffrey was born October 19, 1963 in Phoenix, AZ, the son of Donald and Jean (Ward) Grinde. Jeffrey worked as a grounds keeper for the Breezy Point Golf Course.

Jeffrey will be missed by his mother, Jean, of Pequot Lakes; his children, Vanessa (Dan) Bye, of Pequot Lakes, Evan Grinde, of Pine River, and Eric Grinde, of Pine River; his sister, Dawn Pena, of Phoenix, AZ; and a grandchild, Adden Brammann. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald.
