Nichols Monroe James

Monroe Nichols, age 92, of Staples, passed away at the Lakewood Care Center on Wednesday, August 05, 2009. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, August 8th at 11:00 am at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Staples. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, at the church. Burial will be at the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.

Monroe was born on August 4, 1917, in Staples, to William and Henrietta Nichols. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Staples, graduating in 1935. On April 9th, 1940, he married Beatrice Smith. Shortly after, they moved up to the Iron Range where Monroe worked as a miner. In 1945 they moved back to Staples where he took a job as a milkman. Monroe and Beatrice also cut, split, and sold firewood. He worked with his sons for 11 years at the Standard Station, until retiring in 1987. Monroe enjoyed fishing, playing cards, woodworking, gardening, and making homemade ice cream. He was a member of the Congregational Church, Church mens Club, and held many Church Offices.

Monroe is survived by his wife of 69 years, Beatrice; children, Richard (Margo) of Staples, Jeanette Hardy of Milaca, and James (Betty Jo) of Aldrich; sister-in-law, Lucile Nichols of Wilmar; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill, Charles Red, and Roy; and sisters, Ellen Dorrit and Mary.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.

Saterbak Gladys Otelia

Gladys Saterbak, age 94, of Motley, passed away on Thursday, August 6, in Bemidji. A funeral service is planned for Tuesday, August 10, at 11:00 am at Faith Lutheran Church in Staples with Pastor Steve Sveom officiating. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5-7:30 at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Eids Cemetery in Ortonville.

Gladys was born on January 11, 1915, in Cavite, SD, to Ole and Julia (Hagenson) Helgeson. Her family moved to Ortonville in March of 1920. She grew up and attended school there. While working at the Corner Café, Gladys met James Saterbak. The two were married on October 6, 1940. They traveled quite a bit, until settling in Moundsview, MN in 1952. In 1981 they retired to Lake Shamineau. Jim passed away shortly thereafter. After Jims passing, Gladys remained at the lake, thanks in part to some very wonderful neighbors. She enjoyed bird watching, gardening, canning, making jellies, nature, traveling, and being at the lake. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and the Lincoln Ladies Aid.

Gladys is survived by her children, Roger (Vickie) Saterbak of Brainerd and Mari Jo (Don) Kirchner of Bemidji; grandchildren, Brian Saterbak and Kelly (Chris) Sprague; great-granddaughter, Isabella Sprague; step grandchildren, Deawn Trapp and Shawn Norenberg; step great-grandchildren, Jordan Cross, Bailey, Riley, and Jesse Trapp, Kendall and Cameron Norenberg; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; her parents; brothers, Helmer, Elmer, Herman, Adolph, and Clarence; and sisters, May, Clara, Gena, and Anna.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.

Sullivan V. Ross

Vernon Ross Sullivan, age 72, of Brainerd, died at his home August 7, 2009. Services for Ross will be 1 PM, Thursday, August 13 at Bethany Samaritan Village Chapel with Pastor Lilja Behr officiating. Friends are welcome to visit Wednesday evening from 5-7 PM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter and one hour prior to services at Bethany on Thursday. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Brainerd, MN.
Ross was born October 6, 1936 in Carson City, NV to Robert John and Lillian (Root) Sullivan. Raised and educated in Rio Linda, CA, he was a graduate of Grant Union High School and Moler College. He served in the Army National Guard in New Jersey and in the Reserves in California. He was employed by Blue Chip Stamp in Richmond, CA; Frontier Electric in Santa Rosa, CA; ARA Group Transportation in Riverside, CA; and BFI Waste Systems North America in Omaha, NE and Minneapolis, MN. Ross retired in 1998 and moved to his cabin on North Long Lake. He worked after retirement for Mills Motors and CarQuest Auto Parts. Ross was a fun guy and enjoyed boating, riding his Harley, ATVs, snowmobiles and "golf cart". Ross was an avid drag racing fan and traveled to numerous race tracks throughout the country.

Ross is survived by wife, Gigi; daughter, Lori Bottenfield, of Chaska, MN; son, Jerry Lee, of Chico, CA; daughter, Serena Sullivan, of Beaumont, CA; sister Genelle (Frank) Palmer, of Sacramento, CA; brother, Tim (Chery) Dwyer, of Galt, CA; sister-in-law, Kathy Sullivan, of Hayden, ID; brother-in-law, James Arrington, of Santa Rosa, CA; grandchildren, Dustin Ross (Jaime) Oldenburg, of Waconia, MN, Clayton Lee, of Chico, CA, Blair, Bailey, and Brieann Bottenfield, of Chaska, MN, and Jimmy Cox, of Beaumont, CA; and one great-granddaughter, Hailey Joyce Oldenburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Gene Dwyer; and brother, Robert Wayne Sullivan.

Memorials are preferred to Bethany Good Samaritan Garden Fund.

Fornshell - Billman Evelyn

Evelyn Fornshell  Billman, 90, of Pillager, passed away Saturday, August 08, 2009 at Whispering Pines Nursing Home in Pine River, MN. Funeral services for Evelyn are scheduled for 2 PM, Monday, August 17 at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter with Pastor Julie Sutton  Deem officiating. Friends are welcome to gather one hour prior to services. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. A reception will be held at the Brenny Funeral Chapel Reception Room.
Evelyn was born March 20, 1919 in Brainerd, the daughter of Charles and Pegny Gosse. She worked at St. Josephs Medical Center as a nurse for 20 years and while working there she met her husband, Leonard Fornshell. The couple was married August 22, 1967. She and Leonard then made their home in rural Pillager. There they owned and operated buses for 17 years. Leonard passed away November 25, 1985. She met Elmer Billman and they were life partners for 18 years and married on October 22, 2008 making their home in Pillager until her death. Evelyn was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Pillager and a life member of American Legion, Post # 53. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, cooking, gardening and traveling. She loved her family.

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Elmer; her son, Leland (Judy) Foy, of Brainerd; daughters, Geraldine (Dennis) Gallant, of Yelm, WA and Shirley (George) Britton, of Ely, MN; four step-daughters, Alexandria Noble, of Prior Lake, MN, Patricia (Cameron) Hedland, of Prior Lake, MN, Denise Billman, of Phoenix, AZ, and Debra Labrie, of Phoenix, AZ; sister-in-laws, Jeannette Fornshell, of Pillager, Dorothy Fornshell, of Pillager, Betty Farber, of Motley, and Aldene Gosse, of Brainred; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, George Foy; her second husband, Leonard Fornshell; and her brother, Ernest Gosse.

Cheney Grant

Grant L. Cheney, age 83, of Motley passed away August 8th at Lakewood Health Systems Hospital in Staples. A service is planned for Friday, August 14th at 7:00 pm, at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples with visitation beginning at 5:00 pm. Grant was born in Los Angeles, CA. He married Mary Jane Covert on September 2nd, 1944, in Lyndale, MN. He lived in many areas throughout the state during his lifetime. Grant loved the farm. Showing cattle and sheep was a pastime he enjoyed. He took pride in his flower garden and lawn. Grant is survived by his wife Mary Jane; Daughter, Judy (Skip) Lisle; Sons, Robert (Marge Tepley), Leslie (Trish), and Jeffrey Cheney; Grandchildren, Jason Norring, Jerod Norring, Heidi Bjerga, Kristine Bohl, Bradley Cheney and Benjamin Cheney; nine great grandchildren; and a sister, Helene Hutmaker. He was preceded in death by his parents Leslie and Louise (Remjeska) Cheney and grandson, Robert L. Cheney JR.

Smith Ethel L.

Ethel L. Smith age 92, of Motley, passed away on August 9th, at Lakewood Health Systems Hospital in Staples, MN. A funeral service is planned for Wednesday, August 12, at 11 AM, at the Assembly of God Church in Staples. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5  7 pm at the Assembly of God Church, and one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples. Ethel was born August 20, 1916, in Nebraska and lived most of her life in Motley. She married Edward in 1963 in South Dakota. Ethel worked with her husband, who owned Smittys music and vending until age 90. She also cooked at Camp Shamineau for many years. Reading and crocheting were her favorite pastimes. Ethel is survived by her children: Vernetta Yantes, Gillette, WY; Richard Dick Kutzler, Glendive, MT; Kenneth Ken Kutzler, Crystal, MN. Stepchildren: Eleanor Webster, Philbrook, MN; James Jim (Eileen) Smith, Spring Lake Park, MN; Mary Ann Mary (Duane) Dukowitz, Staples, MN; John Jack (Dixie) Smith, Philbrook, MN; Jeanne Brown, Staples, MN; Clarence Pete (Susie) Smith, Philbrook, MN; Leroy (Shirley) Smith of Pillager, MN; Edward Boone Smith , Philbrook, MN; Sandra Sandy Killian, Staples, MN; Loren Hank (Cindy) Smith, Philbrook, MN. She is also survived by 48 grandchildren, 108 great-grandchildren, and 16 great, great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ruth Carpenter; and many nieces and nephews. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents Warren and Emma (Wardon) Carpenter, her husband, Edward in 2008; son, Larry Kutzler; grandson Bryan Hampton, sisters, Ester Heino and Joy Schper; and brothers, Delvin Bud and Calvin.

Marden Merle A.

Merle A. Marden, age 76 of Staples, passed away on August 9th, at Lakewood Health Systems Hospital in Staples. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5  7 pm at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples and one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples. Merle was born in New York Mills and spent most of her life in Staples. She married Robert in Staples on October 6th, 1951. Merle was very much a mom and the glue that held the family together. She taught Sunday school and was active in her church circle. Sewing for her family and others, as well as making dolls, provided enjoyment for her. Merle was very well known for her excellent pies. Merle is survived by her husband, Robert; Children, Karen Rengel, Jeff (Lynn) Marden, Nancy Marden (Jamie Listebarger), Peggy (Duane) Reese, Linda (Claude) Bertrand, and Patrick Marden; Grandchildren, Alicia, Philip, Blair, Brooke, Traci, Travis, Taylor, Sarah, Rachel, Grant, Hannah, Joshua, Christina, and Aaron; Great Grandchildren, Alexis, Aiden, Rowan, and Kaedynce; Sisters, Dorothy (Wally) Krantz and Millie (Ben) Polk, and Carol Marden; Brothers, Howard (Lucille) Selander, Morris Selander, Alden (Noreen) Selander and Wayne (Donna) Selander; many nieces and nephews; and special friend Ina Kaler. Merle was preceded in death by her parents George and Anna (Maasch) Selander; bother-in-law, Philip Marden; and sister-in-law, Darlene Selander.

Ahlgrim Laurel "Laurie" Lee

Laurel Laurie Ahlgrim, age 45, of Crosslake, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, August 09, 2009 at her home. Memorial Services will be 7:00 PM Friday, August 14, at First Lutheran Church in Brainerd. Friends and relatives are invited to gather beginning at 6:00 PM Friday at the Church.
Laurel Lee Ahlgrim was born on March 16, 1964, in Brainerd, MN, the daughter of Earl and Nancy (Wold) Cooley. Laurie grew up in Brainerd and graduated from Brainerd High School. Following her schooling she went to work for the State of Minnesota as a State healthcare worker, in Brainerd, serving for 17 years. On July 15, 1989, she was united in marriage to Tom Ahlgrim. After leaving the State healthcare system she began a career as a realtor with Aspen Realty, and also working as a rec aide for Naverson Management, Inc. at Breezy Point. Her greatest joy was her family, especially hugging her grandchildren. She also enjoyed bargain shopping, rummage sales, and getting the best price on gifts for her family even if she had to tuck them away for a while.

Laurie was preceded in death by her father, Earl; sister, Julie; and step father, Holger. She will sadly missed but lovingly remembered by her husband, Tom; children, Leia, Marshal, Sara, and Lura; several grandchildren; mother, Nancy; siblings, Duane, Steve, Gale, and Cheri; and special friend, Joyce Lietner.

Lauries family wish to say a special thank you to Dr. Ronald Halvorson and the Brainerd Medical Center Oncology staff for theyre compassionate care during her 10 year battle with cancer, also a special thank you to the Heartland Hospice staff for their loving care during the last few weeks.

Berg Joan Charlene

Joan Charlene Berg was born on May 23, 1941, in Duluth, MN, the daughter of Gust and Gladys (Clausen) Wagner. She graduated from Proctor High School and went on to earn her RN degree at St. Lukes School of Nursing. On August 3, 1963, she was united in marriage to Clayton Berg, in Proctor, MN. Following her schooling she went to work for St. Lukes Hospital in Duluth eventually becoming Head Nurse of Pediatrics until her retirement in 2003 after 41 years of service. She was an active member of the Minnesota Nurses Association and after the couple moved to Crosslake she became involved in teaching CPR to Senior classes at Pequot Lakes. She also was a car seat technician for the Crow Wing County Passenger Safety Coalition and was a substitute nurse for Pequot Lakes Public Schools. Among the things she enjoyed were gardening, especially flowers, riding her ATV, going for pontoon rides, quilt making, cooking, and spending time with her grandchildren. Joan was a special person who touched the lives of everyone from her patients and coworkers, to her friends and family, and especially her grandchildren who will dearly miss their Nanny.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gust and Gladys; brother, Art Wagner; and sister, Dorothy Zack. Joan will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her best friend and husband of 46 years, Clayton; children, Scott (Beth) Berg of Duluth, MN, Kristy Simota of Duluth, MN, and Mark Berg of Moose Lake, MN; grandchildren, Kaleb, Daphne, and Lars; Ruger, her dog; and many nieces and nephews.

We invite all of you to join us for a Memorial Service and celebration of Joans life to be held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 614 2nd Street, Proctor, MN 55810, at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 19, 2009. Friends and relatives are invited to gather beginning at 1:00 PM at the Church in Proctor.

Shouw Donald W.

Donald Wayne Schouw Sr., age 69, of Brainerd, passed away on Wednesday, August 12, at the St. Josephs Medical Center in Brainerd. A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, August 19, from 4-6 at the Brenny Funeral Home in Baxter. There will military honors at 5:00 at the Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Minnesota Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls.
Donald was born on December 21, 1939, in Aurora, IL, to Alfred and Esther (Johnson) Schouw. He played football for and graduated from the Lakewood High School. He then entered the Navy in 1959, where he served his country for four years. Following his active duty he also served several years in the Marine Reserves. In 1962 Don married Janice Gray and they had two children. He worked as a printer for many years. In 1994 Don retired and moved to Brainerd from California. Don was a member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed singing; Elvis was his favorite, working on cars, cooking, and bartending, but he especially enjoyed spending time with his grand daughter, Brionni.

Donald is survived by his children, Laura (Ron) Armstrong and D.J. Schouw; granddaughter, Brionni; step daughter, Elaine; brothers, Roger, Kim, and Duane; sister, Sandy McDaniel; and special friend, Jan. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Britton Fern Elaine

Fern E. Britton, age 84, of Brainerd, passed away Saturday afternoon, August 15, 2009, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. Memorial Services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter. Friends and relatives are invited to gather for a time of caring and sharing beginning at 1:00 on Tuesday at the Chapel. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery of rural Brainerd following a reception at the Brenny Funeral Chapel Reception Center,
Fern Elaine Britton was born in Brainerd, MN, to Fred and Myrtle (Schultz) Lasher on October 21, 1924. She married Owen Britton Sr. in Sisseton, SD, on September 9, 1949. Before retiring, Fern worked at the Rexall Drug store, Ben Franklin, and Sears all in Brainerd.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Myrtle; a brother, Fredrick; a son Kevin; a daughter, Elaine; and a grand daughter, Tara. Fern is survived by her husband Owen Britton Sr.; a sister, Pearl Burton of Soldotna, Alaska; a son, Owen Britton Jr. of Brainerd; daughters, Jackie Ramsdell of Brainerd, and Cathy (Judson) Murray of Brainerd; eleven grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.
