Bert L. Fornshell, age 86, of Pillager, passed away at his home, following a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Services will be 1:00 PM Thursday, August 20, 2009, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pillager. Friends and relatives are invited to gather from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Wednesday at the Brenny Funeral Chapel Reception Center in Baxter and also for one hour prior to services at the Church on Thursday. Interment with Military Honors will be in Wildwood Cemetery at Pillager following services.
Bert Lavern Fornshell was born on November 8, 1922, in Woodworth, ND, the son of James and Johanna (Buskeness) Fornshell. Bert attended Pillager School until he joined the Navy in 1942. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He returned home to Pillager and on September 18, 1948, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Eppelsheimer in First Lutheran Church in Brainerd. Bert was employed by Potlatch in Brainerd for 18 years until retirement. He enjoyed staying busy with his hobby farm, which included raising birds, horses, and Dalmatians. He also enjoyed woodworking and tending to his many collections, but most of all Bert enjoyed watching birds, puttering in his workshop, and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Johanna; brothers, Curt, Leonard, Raymond, Charles, and Darald; sisters, Leona, Lenora, Ida, and Viola. Bert is survived by his loving wife Dorothy of 60 years; children, son, Randy (Bonnie) Fornshell of Milltown, WI, daughters, Debbie (Keith) Skeesick of Motley, MN, and Cindy (Arlo Rohl) Barnett of Pillager, MN; grandchildren, Tania (Darin) Bjornson, Kandi (Matthew) Gardner, Sara (Chris) Nagel, Nathan Brunzel-Rohl, Kristopher Mertens, Gina (Aric) Tourville, Kylie Skeesick, and Kody Skeesick; great grandchildren, Josh, Alexis, Hunter, Tanner, Tyler, Levi, Kassie, Grace, Lily, and Jack; 2 sisters, Alta (Bud) Loucks and Betty Farber; sisters-in-law, Jeanette Fornshell and Lorraine Fornshell; and brother-in-law, Duane (Delores) Eppelsheimer.

Halverson Myrtle

Myrtle Halverson, age 80, of Motley, passed away at the Lakewood Health System Hospital on Saturday, August 15. Funeral Services will be on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 12 noon at the Mildred Bible Chapel, Backus, MN with Pastor Dennis Gellerman officiating. Family will receive friends from 10  12 prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Ponto Lake Cemetery, Backus, MN.

Myrtle was born on October 10, 1928, to Leslie and Alice Beals, in Deepwater, NJ. In 1928 the family moved to Blind Lake, MN. She attended grade school in Blind Lake and high school in Backus. On November 6, 1946 Myrtle was united in marriage to Harvey Halverson. They shared 61 years of marriage together, with the last 25 years in the Staples, Motley area. Myrtle enjoyed embroidering, her flowers, birds and spending time with her family and friends. Myrtle was loved and appreciated by her family and friends and will be dearly missed for her comforting words and the continuing inner strength that was seen by all that loved her. Memories of Myrtle will be treasured in our hearts forever.

Myrtle is survived by her children, Ronald Halverson of Brainerd, Barbara (Landis) Erickson of Pelican Rapids, Nancy Olson of Motley, Lee (Terry) Halverson of Keizer, OR, Joan (Steve) Zeug of Princeton, Wesley (Michelle) Halverson of Tracy City, TN, Thenda (Jose) Bermea of Yuma, AZ; sister, Ethel Bowman of Plymouth, MN; three brothers, Robert Beals of Shelton, WA, Richard Beals of Robinsdale, MN, and Charles Beals of Yakima, WA; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey, and her parents.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.

Anderson Roland "Andy" Ernst

Roland Andy Anderson, age 84, of Merrifield, passed away Friday, August 14, 2009, at the St. Cloud Hospital. A Memorial Mass will be 11:00 AM Saturday, August 22, 2009, at Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Crosslake. Friends and relatives are invited to gather at the Church beginning at 10:00 AM on Saturday. Private family interment with Military Honors will be Monday, August 24, 2009, at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley.
Andy was born on April 5, 1925, in Ashtabula, OH, the son of Ernst and Hilda Anderson. After attending high school he enlisted in the Army Air Corp serving his country as a navigator/bombardier doing weather recon flights. Following his active duty he entered the Rolla School of Mines and Metallurgy for one year, and then he transferred to the University of Minnesota where he earned his degree in Electrical Engineering. On June 1, 1948 he was united in marriage to Leola Katzmarek at the Catholic Church in Harding. Andy worked for Eastman Kodak for 2 years in Rochester, NY. Returning to Minnesota he was employed by Univac, now known as Unisys, until his retirement in 1984. From 1973-1975 the couple lived in Bad Holmburg, Germany. In the late 1980s the couple moved permanently to their home on Horseshoe Lake. For over 30 years they wintered in Florida and Arizona.

Andy was a member of Immaculate Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, IEEE, and the American Legion Post 500. Among the things he enjoyed were silver smithing, fixing antique clocks, making stained glass, fishing, playing poker, and spending special time with his grand daughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernst and Hilda; brother, Rodney; and beloved grandson, Brandon. Andy will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Kitty; son, Doug Anderson and his wife Jan of Eden Prairie, MN; and grand daughter, Jessica Anderson of Waconia, MN.

Bean - Rohl Florence I.

Florence I. Bean  Rohl, 85, of Brainerd, died Monday, August 17, 2009 at St. Josephs Medical Center in Brainerd. Services for Florence will be 1:00 PM, Friday, August 21, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Motley with Reverend Greg Ciesluk officiating. Friends are welcome to gather 4:00  8:00 PM, Thursday evening at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in BAXTER. Interment will follow services at Wildwood Cemetery in Pillager, MN.
Florence was born October 2, 1923 in Woonsocket, SD, the daughter of William and Anna (Thompson) Haffner. Family and home were most important to Florence. She loved to read, garden, embroider, sew and crochet. She was a collector of spoons and music boxes. She also collected silver flatware for her grandchildren. Florence liked to travel. She went on an Alaskan cruise for her honeymoon and also enjoyed taking trips with her daughters and grandchildren.

Florence will be missed by her husband, Walter; her daughters, Sharon Martin, Audrey Groshong, and Beverly (Bruce Kapitan) Bean; her step-daughters, Gwen Lumsden, Laurel (John) Park, and Ellen (Elroy) Noreen; her sister, Lila (Ron) Zimney; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Dean; her parents, William and Anna; four brothers; and two sons-in-law.

Johnstone Sheldon G.

Sheldon G. Johnstone, age 90, of Crookston, MN, formerly of Staples, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at RiverView Hospital in Crookston. Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM, Monday, August 24, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Staples. Friends and relatives are invited to gather at the church on Monday beginning at 1:00PM. Interment with military honors by Tri-County Post 124 of Motley will be at Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.
Sheldon G. Johnstone was born December 26, 1918, in Dutton, MT, the son of George William and Leni Eva (Van Horn) Johnstone. He graduated from Staples High School in 1937; Sheldon was employed by Northern Pacific Railroad in Staples from the age of 19 until he retired in January of 1978. His railroad career was interrupted by WWII when he served his country in Europe and Africa with the 2nd Battalion 135th Infantry from April 23, 1941 until May 16, 1945. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Mae Vanderhoef of Staples on April 12, 1941. To this union four children, Alice, Linda, David and Donna were born. The couple raised their family on a farm south of Staples where he farmed along with working for the railroad. Sheldon and Evelyn were able to share 25 years of marriage together before she died on September 17, 1967. On June 8, 1974, Sheldon married Agnes (Brolsma) Cowell, of Crookston, MN expanding his family with the addition of David Cowell, Coleen and Patricia. Sheldon loved to farm but he also enjoyed helping others by serving Grievance Chairman of the Railroad Union and serving on the local School Board. He was accomplished welder, and also enjoyed metal working, and woodworking. He was very inventive and mechanically inclined. In his later years he enjoyed gardening and building rock walls. He enjoyed eating in general, but especially ice cream, cookies and fresh berries. After their retirement, they enjoyed living on the lakes by Pine River and Grand Rapids, MN, and wintering in South Texas before moving to Crookston. Sheldon was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Leni; first wife, Evelyn in 1967; brothers, Lloyd and Glenn; sister, Leni; and great-granddaughter, Kristin. Sheldon will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Agnes of Crookston; children, Alice (Willie) Harris, of Hondo, TX, Linda Mae Mille of Alexandria, MN, David (Diane) Johnstone, of Browerville, MN, and Donna (Terry) Zimmer, of Nelson, MN; step-children, David (Karen) Cowell, of Durango, IA, Coleen (Jerry) Bitker of Halstad, MN, and Patricia (Mike) Danielson of Viroqua, WI; 11 grandchildren, Brenda Miller, Becky (Tim) Ness, Christopher (Sara) Johnstone, Michael Johnstone, Joshua Johnstone, Kayla Zimmer, Kelly Zimmer, Jyl (John) McIntosh, Jake (Sharnel) Bitker, Katie (Corey) Starr, and Jon (Amy) Danielson; and 16 beloved great-grandchildren, Blake, Elijah, and Camden Ness, Malie Finstad, Ronnie, Mary, Maria, Nicholas, Selena, and Khiley Johnstone, Michaela and Johnny McIntosh, Lillian, Elzetta, and Sharlet Bitker, and Landen Starr.

Robinson Barbara "Bobbi"

Barbara Bobbi Robinson, 60, of Pine River, died Sunday, August 23, 2009 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Services for Bobbi will be 1:00 PM, Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Swanburg Lutheran Church in Timothy Township with Pastor Marlys Korman officiating. Friends are welcome to gather one hour prior to services. Interment will follow services at Swanburg Cemetery.
Bobbi was born March 11, 1949 in Parnell, IA, the daughter of Arlo and Lois (Fattig) Collingwood. In 1967, she graduated from Center Point High School in Iowa. She worked for a number of years at nursing homes in Howard Lake, Foley, and Pine River. She also volunteered at the Pine River-Backus Bus Garage.

The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Josephs Medical Center and St. Cloud Hospital for their care and compassion.

She will be missed by her children, Ruth Ann Alvord, of Rice, MN, Irvin (Dawn) Robinson, of Foley, MN, and Jennifer and family; her special friend, Toby Matros; her sister, Arlis (Laren) Frye, of Norwalk; her brothers, Donald (Lisa) Collingwood, of Center Point, IA, and Charles Collingwood, of Ashville, NC; two step-sisters; two step-brothers; and nine grandchildren, Ryan, Ashlyn, and Braden Alvord, Mackenzie, Eli, GracieAnna Robinson along with Jennifers three children. Bobbi was preceded in death her long time companion, Richard Rubey.

DeVine Douglas McLean

Douglas McLean DeVine, age 88, of Nisswa, passed away Sunday morning at St. Josephs Medical Center in Brainerd. Funeral Service will be on Thursday at 2:30 at Crosslake Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Anderson officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 5  7 pm at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Crosslake, and at 1 pm on Thursday, at the church, until the time of the service. Private interment will be at Mission Township Cemetery.
Douglas met his wife to be Garnet on a blind date and they were married November 2, 1957, in Fargo, North Dakota. They lived in St. Paul and in 1981 happily moved to the cabin on Bonnie Lake that Dougs parents owned since he was 6 years old. In 1999 they moved to a town house in Nisswa. Reading was a lifelong love of Dougs; he wanted to read everything he could. Garnet developed her love of reading from Doug. They did everything together. Doug held a special love for his nieces and nephews. He will always be remembered as a loving husband and a gracious host to his family and friends.

Doug is survived by his wife, Garnet; one sister, Sally DeVine; nephew, William Elijah, Jr.; Cousins, Bright McLean Dorn Blaser and Candace Steele. He was preceded in death by his parents, Owen and Maude (McLean) DeVine and his sister, Nancy Jean Devine.

Stenglein Gregory "Greg"

Gregory 'Greg' Stenglein, 62, of Brainerd, MN, died at his home Tuesday, August 25, 2009. Services for Greg will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter with Father George Zeck officiating. Friends are welcome to gather Friday evening from 5-7 PM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter.
Greg was born June 18, 1947 in Champlain, MN, the son of Donald Pat and Ruth (Strommen) Stenglein. He moved to the Brainerd Lakes Area with his parents and graduated from Brainerd High School. He enlisted in the US Army and served his country in Vietnam as Military Police. Greg received a Purple Heart for his service. He graduated from Brainerd Junior College and Arden Hill Law Enforcement. He was employed by Crow Wing County Law Enforcement for many years before he was disabled on duty. He then went to work for Nisswa Tax Service. Greg enjoyed duck and goose hunting, woodworking, and gardening. He liked to cook. Greg was a member of St. Christophers Catholic Church, American Legion, VFW, and DAV.

Greg will be missed by his wife, Martha and his children, Tiffany, Erinn, and Patrick. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Workman Virgil L.

Virgil L. Workman, 75, of Nisswa, died Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Virgil was born July 12, 1934 in Astoria, IL, the son of Sam and Ruby Workman. He was one of five children. After graduating high school, Virgil worked as a farmer and cattle feed salesman. He was also a bartender for the American Legion in Nisswa for 25 years. In addition he worked at Mattson Lumber in Nisswa. In 1974, Virgil was united in marriage to Roberta Richardson. The couple was able to spend 34 happy years together.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta; five children from a previous marriage; and stepdaughter, Sally Dunn of Ninevah, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and two brothers.
