JoAnne Brekke, age 73, of Pillager, passed away at her home, on Tuesday, March 2. A memorial service is planned for Tuesday, March 9, at 2:00PM at the Casino Assembly of God Church, with Pastor Dan Johnson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Bridgeman Cemetery in the spring.
JoAnne Lenore Brekke was born on April 30, 1936, in Grantsburg, WI, the daughter of Arnold and Dorothy (Johnson) Swenson. On March 31, 1959, she was united in marriage to Richard Brekke in Minneapolis, MN. While in Minneapolis she worked as bookkeeper for the family steel fabricating business along with raising her family. She was also a mother to many college students who needed someone. Among the things she enjoyed doing included going to Lund's to meet with her "coffee pot" friends, gardening, sewing, cooking, teaching Sunday School and being actively involved in the Church. She loved being with and entertaining her children, grand children, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Dorothy; husband Richard in 2001; and brothers, Gordy and Jerry. JoAnne will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children, Richard Brekke of Minneapolis, Randy (Sherry) Brekke of Richfield, and Virginia Brekke of Pillager; grandchildren, Sarah (Mike) Otis; Lydia (fiancé, Matt) Brekke, Meranda (Chris) Walker, Joshua Brekke, and Allison Brekke; great grandchildren, Evelyn Rose and Estella Grace; sister, Kathleen Silvers of Georgia; and many nieces and nephews.

Irma P. Scott, 95, of Garrison Township passed away Thursday, March 4, 2010 at St. Josephs Medical Center in Brainerd. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 8, 2010 at the Community Alliance Church in Garrison, starting at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church. Irma was born on May 12, 1914 to Fred and Ida (Hite) Lingwall in Emily, Minnesota. She moved with her parents to Garrison Township at an early age. Irma was united into marriage to Raymond Scott on May 12, 1937 in Garrison, Minnesota. They owned and operated Scotts Resort on Borden Lake. Irma had lived her whole life Crow Wing County and Irma also never received a pay check in her life. She was always self employed. Irma was a charter member of Christian Missionary Alliance Church. Irma enjoyed gardening, fishing, knitting, embroidering, and crocheting dish towels for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Irma will be sadly missed by her sons; Frank Scott of Garrison, and Robert (Mary) Scott of Garrison; three grandsons; Charles Scott, Jason (Laura) Scott, and Matthew (Tami) Scott; three great- grandchildren; Caitlin, Brenna, and Ali. She was preceded in death by her parents; Fred and Ida; three brothers; Irving Lingwall, Elmer Lingwall, and Donald Lingwall; two sisters; Viola and Elsie; and daughter-in-law; Jean Scott.

Ada Langren Shay, 93, of Baxter passed away on Sunday March 7, 2010 at the Bethany Good Samaritan Village. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter on Thursday March 11, 2010. Reception will follow service at the Brenny Funeral Chapel Reception Room in Baxter. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Internment will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls. Ada was born on November 10, 1916 to Benjamin and Ima (Thomas) Stebbins in Mondamon, Iowa. She was married to Raymond Langren and following his death she was married to Michael Shay on September 9, 1977. Ada lived in the Minneapolis area, Little Falls, and Brainerd Lakes Area and she enjoyed cooking, entertaining, shopping, and traveling. Ada will be sadly missed by her husband Michael of Baxter; sons; Raymond (Colleen) Langren of Brainerd, Dwight Langren, and Duane Langren both of Baxter; daughter; Paula (Wayne)Herrly of Carlos, Minnesota; sisters; Leone Brown of Mapleton, Iowa and Erma Donovan of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Raymond; an infant daughter; two brothers and one sister. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.

Richard Arlen Benge, age 78, of Motley, passed away at the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls on Friday, March 5. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 9, at 11:00 am at the Lincoln Evangelical Free Church in Lincoln with Pastor Jim Brown officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, at the church. Burial will be at the Minnesota Veteran's Cemetery near Camp Ripley.
Richard was born October 13, 1931, in Tracy, MN, to Sarah and Raymond Benge. He was united in marriage to Dixie Ann Hill on October 4, 1952, at the First Congregational Church in Mankato, MN. Together they raised 5 children.
Richard was a man who was ahead of his time. Over the years he designed medical devices, homes, bird houses, toys, and many other things.
One of his greatest pleasures was sharing "Bird Wing Meadows" (home) with his family and friends. He loved giving his grandkids rides on his beloved golf cart.
Richard had been a member of the U.S. Army Band at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. He was also a member of the Lincoln Evangelical Free Church, wood carvers, the Blue Bird Recovery Program, and the Masonic Lodge in Staples.
He is survived by his wife Dixie; children, Sandi, Jeff, Marcia Quarberg, Scott, and Becky (Eric) Irwin; grandchildren, Shawn (Crystal) Quarberg, Lauren, Desiree Angela Benge, Nathan and Nicholas Irwin. Also sister Carol (Roger) Coult and brother-in-law Darryl (Shirley) Hill.
Interment will be at Veteran's Cemetery neat Camp Ripley.

Darlene Anna May Knosalla, age 85, of Staples, passed away at the Lakewood Care Center on Wednesday, March 10, 2010. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 13, at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples, with Fr. Ron Schmelzer officiating. The Wake will be Friday evening from 5-7 and one hour prior to the service, at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples, with a Rosary at 6:30 and Parish Prayers at 6:45. Burial will be at the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.
Darlene (Modrow) Knosalla was born to Emil and Lydia (Spilker) Modrow on December 10, 1924, in Bertha, MN. She grew up near Bertha and attended country school, graduating from the 8th grade. Darlene worked as a house keeper, interior painter, and paperer, in Minneapolis and Alexandria, until she married Anton Knosalla in Motley on November 21, 1944. In 1947 they moved to Staples. They were blessed with three children. Darlene was a member of Sacred Heart Church and she enjoyed sewing and making quilts.
Darlene is survived by her children; Phyllis Foster of Staples; John (Cathi)Knosalla of Staples; and Linda Dukowitz(Lynn Whittleff) of Princeton; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sisters, Sally (Richard) Ross of Grand Rapids and Barbara (Tom) Trana; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Anton; grandson, Todd Foster; parents, Emil and Lydia; sisters, Blondina (Floyd) Johnson, Caroline (John) Baron, and Betty (Warren) Smith; brother, Vernon (Meryl) Modrow; and a niece, Sherida.
Memorials are preferred to the Sacred Heart School.

John Joe Hermerding, 81, Ideal Township, died Monday, March 15, 2010 at his home. Services will be 11AM Friday, March 19, 2010 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes with Rev Frank Milo officiating. Interment will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery. The relatives will receive friends one hr prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Crosslake. John Joe Hermerding is survived by his wife, Mabel, son, Gregg (Connie) Hermerding of Buffalo; daughter, Kay (Rick Kubik) of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; 4 grandchildren, Bryan (Katie), Merilee, Joseph (Ellora), and Abbie; great granddaughter, Norah; two brothers, Leland (Cathy) Hermerding of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Walter Hermerding of Crosslake; sister, Darlene (Donald) Dammann of Glencoe. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald and sister; Delores. John was born on May 7, 1928 at Clemens, Minnesota, son of the late Walter and Mathilda (Reetz) Hermerding. He graduated from Howard Lake High School. He entered the US Army and served in Korea. Following his honorable discharge he was united in marriage to Mabel Vergin on January 17, 1953 in Buffalo. They moved to Brooklyn Center where he worked at Butler Mfg until his retirement. They moved to Duck Lake in Ideal Township where he was a resident till his death. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, and enjoyed his family and grandchildren, hunting, fishing, feeding the wildlife, working on his lawn, boating and reading. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Crosslake.

Irene Mary Booth, 82, of Staples, died March 18, 2010 at Lakewood Health Systems Hospital in Staples.
Irene was born January 11, 1928 in Staples to Frank and Luella Clausen. She enjoyed cooking, fishing, gardening, puzzles, cards and spending time with family.
Irene is survived by her children, Douglas (Gail) Judd, Bruce Judd, Teresa (Gene) Kucera and Cindy Rawlings; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Booth; brother, Frank (Sonny) Clausen Jr.; and one grandson, Isaiah Judd.
At Irene's request, there will be no funeral services. Private interment will be held at a later date.
Irene will be sadly missed by her family.

Bonnie was born September 11, 1948 in Roseau, MN, the daughter of Virgil and Elvera(Reamer) Blumer. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and her pets. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Survived by her son, Elvis (Michelle Weber)Blesi; her granddaughter, Bianca; her mother, Elvera Kern; her sister, Nancy Price; her brother, Claude (Margaret) Blumer; and her step-brother, Gary (Marie) Kern. Ernest George Johnson, 95, formerly of Brainerd, passed away March 19, 2010, in Cape Coral, Florida. He was born June 12, 1914, in Brainerd, to Arthur and Jessie (Adair) Johnson.
Services will be at 11 AM, Monday, April 5, 2010 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Brainerd. Friends are welcome to gather Sunday evening from 5-7 PM at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter.
Ernest was united in marriage to Doris Maust, on September 16, 1936, in Brainerd. They celebrated 68 years of marriage, until Doris death, March 23, 2004. During WWII, they both worked in a bomber plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan. They later returned to Brainerd where they owned and operated an excavating business, Brainerd Blacktop and Lakeland RediMix. Together they raised six children.
The Johnsons were active members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, of which he served as a deacon for many years. Ernie enjoyed a brisk game of volleyball at church socials and in retirement took up golf, a regular activity with his buddies. He worked part time for Maddens Golf and Resort until he was 88 when he was honored with a gold watch for his service and exemplary work ethic.
He is survived by his wife, Orvetta (Neher), Florida, his four daughters, Sharon (John) Morrison, Brainerd; Bernadine (Trevor) Delafield, Maryland; Roberta (Larry) Christensen, Florida; Diane (Kon) Sorensen, Hutchinson, and daughter-in-law, Paulette (Brian) Johnson Sandefur, Florida; his sister, Mildred Winterowd, Deerwood; and two brothers, Martin, Duluth; and Allen, California; plus nine grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife Doris, infant son Wesley, son Brian, grandson Douglas Christensen, his sister Alice Skillings, Brainerd; and three brothers Walter, Brainerd; Edwin, California; and Albert, Idaho. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter
