David LeRoy Hills, 69, of Brainerd, died Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at St. Josephs Medical Center. Private family burial at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Nokay Lake Township, Crow Wing County. Memorial for family and friends will be held April 3, 2010 at the Northland Arboretum Brainerd. 11:00 a.m. welcome, 11:30 memorial ceremony, lunch and social at noon.
Born September 19, 1940. Parent s Lloyd & MaryAnn Hills. Dave was raised on farm in Appleton MN, and graduated Appleton High School 1958. Attended college at South Dakota State University, married Ardith Schliemann, April 30, 1960. Attended NDSU, received bachelor degree 1963. Lived in Bismarck North Dakota, New Brighton MN and attended the University of MN to receive degree in civil engineering in 1971. Went to work for DNR in Region 3 as head hydrologist. Bought a small farm in Nokay Lake Township 1974 and raised beef cattle. Dave retired in 2002 from DNR and enjoyed gardening and farming with wife Ardith

Preceded in death by his parents Lloyd LeRoy Hills and MaryAnn Hills. Survived by his wife Ardith, daughter Suezann (Robert) Rushing in Medford Oregon and son Michael (Cheryal Lee) Hills in Brainerd Minnesota and four grandchildren Clark Rushing and Soraya, Nathan, Sonya Hills. Sister LaDonna (Richard) Balke, Stepmother Arline Hills, stepsister Karla (Richard) Harris, Marlene Morris & two aunts, niece, nephews and cousins.

Powell Robert "Bob" C.

Robert C. Powell of Cushing passed away March 25, 2010 at the Veteran's Hospital in Minneapolis. Funeral services were held at the Cushing Baptist Church on March 29, 2010 with Dan Holms officiating. Burial was at the Cushing Union Cemetery. Bob was born on October 4, 1925 in Wakonda, South Dakota to the late Willis and Bernice (Nelson) Powell. In 1940, his family moved to Cushing, MN. He entered the United States Army in January of 1945. He served during WWII and was stationed in Iwo Jima, Japan. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He received an honorable discharge in May of 1946. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post #9073 in Randall, MN. Bob was united in marriage to Laura Mae Packer on October 19, 1946. Bob farmed and worked independently, as well as for others, operating heavy equipment until he retired in 1988. Bob was a kind and generous man, always willing to help family, friends and anyone hed meet. He had many friends, young and old, near and far. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Bob was truly one of a kind.

Bob enjoyed purchasing and repairing heavy equipment, being outdoors, deer hunting, fishing and watching westerns. He loved spending time with family, friends, his children, grandchildren, and especially his little sweethearts, great-grandsons Ethan and Alex. Bob is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mae Powell of Cushing, MN; Son, Chriss Powell of Cushing, MN; Daughter, Sheila Powell of Sauk Rapids, MN; Grandchildren, April, Russell, and David Powell, all of Cushing, MN; Great-Grandsons, Ethan Gephart and Alex Lang of Cushing, MN; and Brother, Morris (Sharda) Powell of Motley, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Hattie and Naomi.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Home in Randall.

Reeda Marks, 86, of Crosslake died peacefully on Monday, March 29, 2010 at Golden Horizons in Crosslake, MN. Services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 3, 2010 at the Crosslake Evangelical Free Church Log Church with Rev. Fred Cressman officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Reeda was born on March 2, 1924 in Pennsylvania. She moved to Youngstown, OH and was united into marriage to Anton Marks on September 2, 1950. They then moved to Crosslake with her three children from a previous marriage. Reeda and Anton raised their six children together on their farm. Reeda was a cook at Andys Restaurant for many years. She was a member of the Log Church in Crosslake where she was very active. After her retirement, Reeda moved to Golden Horizon. She loved her family, grandchildren and many friends. She enjoyed reading, cooking, and crocheting. Reeda is survived by her daughters, Patricia Gordon of Pequot Lakes, Karen (Spike) Wales, of Pine River, Reeda Mae (Robert) Tutone, of CA, and Mary Ann Marks, of Brainerd; her sons, Albert (Lupe) Faulkner of CA and Tony (Brenda) Marks, of Crosslake; sister, Twila Burns, of Youngstown, OH; ten grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Reeda was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 52 years, Anton; sons-in-law, Cornell Gordon and Ronnie Sornberger; and nephew, Ricky Anderson. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenny Funeral Chapel of Crosslake, Minnesota.

Seely Alice W.

Alice Seely, age 92, of Staples, passed away at the Lakewood Health System Care Center on Sunday, March 28. A funeral service is planned for Thursday, April 1, at 11:00 AM, at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples. The visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Motley Public Cemetery.

Alice was born on November 15, 1917, in Tracy, MN, to David and Cora (Alexander) Smith. She grew up there and graduated from the Eighth Grade. She married Paul Seely and they moved to Staples where Paul worked for the railroad. They had one daughter.

Alice is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Seely of Browerville; a brother Clem (Eva) Coverston of Fridley; local nieces, Alice (Paul) Delaney, Susan (Doug) Cyrus, and Ann (Joe) Wright; as well as other nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; and six brothers.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.

Ethelyn Anderson, 94, of Nisswa, passed away Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Village in Pine River. Services for Ethelyn will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, April 8 at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa with Pastor Jerry Raedeke officiating. Friends are welcome to gather one hour prior to services. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Nisswa.
Etheyln was born December 17, 1915 in Stockholm, MN, the daughter of Ole and Emma (Asplund) Olson. She was united in marriage to Gordon Anderson in 1940 in Cokato where they lived for many years before moving to LeSeuer where Gordon worked for Green Giant. Following his retirement, the couple moved to Lake Edna in Nisswa. Ethelyn was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Cross, Garden Club, and Nisswa Women of Today. She loved to ice fish and fish during the summer months.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brothers, Harold, Henry and Theodore; and her sister Olive Zander. She will be missed by her nephew, Sheldon (Connie) Olson, of Lakeville.

McNitt John Glasgow

John Glasgow McNitt, 84, Lakeshore, died Friday, April 2, 2010 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM, Wednesday April 7 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter. Friends are welcome to gather from 5 till 7 PM on Tuesday April 6 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter and one hour prior to services on Wednesday. Interment will be in Ridgewood Cemetery, Des Plaine, Ill.
John was born on June 25, 1925 in Evanston, IL, son of Willard and Louise (Richardson) McNitt. He graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill. He enlisted in the US Air Force during WW II. He was a member of the 8th AF where he served as a waist gunner and engineer on a B 17 flying 32 missions over Germany. Following his honorable discharge he attended Northwestern University. He was united in marriage to Marianne Tudor in 1948. He farmed for 35 years in Illinois and Minnesota. Following their retirement the couple moved to Gull Lake where he served on the Lakeshore City Council and the Lake Shore Environmental Committee. He had a deep love and environmental concern for Gull Lake and the surrounding lakes area. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and sports.

John McNitt is survived by his son, John (Barbara) McNitt, of Littleton, CO; brother, Willard McNitt; three grandsons, Casey, Samuel and Anthony; and two great-granddaughters, Ella and Chloe. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Marianne; and his brother, Robert.

Bullen Carl R

Carl R. Bullen, 52, of Pequot Lakes, died peacefully Sunday, April 4, 2010 at his home on Lower Hay Lake. Carl will be missed by his loving wife of nearly 29 years, Patti (Martin); extended family members; and many great friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Erle and Hazel (Dalton) Bullen and his brother, Dennis. Carl was a true entrepreneur, having operated three successful businesses in his life. He liked to be up to date with the latest technology and was the "go to guy" for his friends. Many in "lake country" learned the ins and outs of computers and internet from Carl. He enjoyed many adventures during his life. He was first on the trail, fastest on the lake, last at the bonfire. Services for Carl will be 4:00 PM, Friday, April 9, 2010 at Timberwood Church in Nisswa with Pastors Tom Wiegard and John Just officiating. Friends are welcome to gather one hour prior to services. Carl had a big place in his heart for the all the veterans who served our country. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to any service organization in memory of Carl. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Pequot Lakes.

Virginia was born on November 16, 1931, to Judson and Hazel (Worstell) Neal, in Middletown, OH. She attended school there and graduated from the Middletown High School in 1950. She went on to attend Nursing School, graduating as an RN in 1953. She met Wilson Penquite on a blind date and the two where married a short time later, on August 19, 1954, in Springfield, OH. They settled in Blanchester and started a family. Virginia worked as a nurse in various nursing homes, retiring in 1995. In 2001 Virginia moved to Staples to be nearer to her family. Virginia was very active in church; as a member of the Choir and Ladies Aid, teaching Sunday School, leading Coffee Bible Study. She was a 4H advisor, and a member of the History Club. She enjoyed genealogy, painting, reading, and playing digital solitaire. Virginia is survived by her daughter, Pamela (Wes) Johnson of Marshall, MN; grandchildren, Andrew Penquite, Jared Johnson, Rick Stewart, Stephanie Penquite, Nathaniel Johnson, Mary Stewart, David Penquite, and Kyle Penquite; and nephew, Jim (Sandy) Neal. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson in 1983; daughter Meg Penquite; son, John Penquite; and brother, James (Jane) Neal.
