Clarence Peterson

BADGER, Minn. -- Clarence Peterson, 66, Badger, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.

Clarence Jerome Peterson was born May 21, 1931, the son of Perley and Ella (Forsness) Peterson, in Nereson Township, Roseau County, Minn., where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He married Vivian Svir on Oct. 25, 1955, in Badger. They lived in Montana before moving to Badger. He worked for the Badger State Bank from 1958 to 1962, and then the U.S. Postal Service from 1962 until retiring in 1992 as postmaster. He worked as a clerk for auction sales.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Peggy (Mark), Strathcona, Minn., Jean (Wally) Gushaluk, Vita, Man., Nancy Peterson, St. Paul, and Polly (John) Blumer, Isanti, Minn.; a son, Jeffrey (Toni), Darwin, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and sisters, Eunice Elgin, Mesa, Ariz., Judeen Engen, Karlstad, Minn., and Carol Bakken, Clinton, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Eugene "Paul."

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Our Redeemers Lutheran Church, Badger.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Helgeson Funeral Home Chapel, Roseau, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Badger City Cemetery.

Joanna Olson

TABOR, Minn. -- Joanna Olson, 84, Woodinville, Wash., formerly of Tabor, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in Hearthside, Snohomish, Wash.

Joanna Feist was born March 15, 1913, the daughter of John and Margaret Feist, in Tabor. She was raised in East Grand Forks and Grand Forks. She worked at St. Michael's Hospital, Grand Forks. She married Kenneth Olson. They moved to the West Coast in the mid-1970s. Kenneth Olson died in 1989. She moved to Woodinville to live near her son.

She is survived by a son, Kenneth (Lucy), Woodinville; two grandchildren; brothers, Pius, Grand Forks, and Peter, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and sisters, Margaret Burckhard, Grand Forks, Cecilia Kelsey, Beulah, Colo., Philomena Egeland, East Grand Forks, and Betty Carroll, Rochester, Minn.

Services: Were held in Redmond, Wash. (Flintoft's, Issaquah, Wash.).

Harry Murach

HALLOCK, Minn. -- Harry Murach, 84, Hallock, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, in Kittson Memorial Health Care Hospital, Hallock.
Harry Murach was born Oct. 23, 1913, the son of Conrad and Cecelia (Swatlowski) Murach, in Oslo, Minn. He moved with his family to Bagley, Minn., where he attended school. He joined the U.S. Army and served in 1944. He married Ida Lietz in 1943 in Bagley, where they lived until 1957, when they moved to Fosston, Minn. In 1971, they moved to Stephen, Minn., and in 1975, they moved to Hallock. He worked for Land O Lakes, Bagley and for the city of Stephen.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Harry (Dianne), Inman, S.C.; daughters, Mary Kroening, Fosston, and Vonnie (Glenn) Daley and Susie Brown, both of Grafton, N.D.; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Andrew, Grand Forks.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Julian; and a sister, Angeline.

Services: 1: 30 p.m. Saturday, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hallock.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Hughes Funeral Home, Hallock.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock.

Frieda Sulerud

HALSTAD, Minn. -- Frieda Sulerud, 90, Halstad, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Frieda Dittberner was born March 29, 1907, the daughter of Herman and Ida "Brueske" Dittberner, in Leaf Valley, Minn., where she attended school. She married Clark Sulerud on Oct. 19, 1933. They lived in Halstad. Clark Sulerud died May 12, 1971. She moved to Halstad Lutheran Memorial Home, where she has lived since July 1996.

She is survived by a daughter, Janet (Darrel) Hesby, Wayzata, Minn.; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Roy, Parkers Prairie, Minn., and Erwin, Alexandria, Minn.; and a sister, Lilly Peterson, Evansville, Minn.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Clair; and sisters, Elda and Adeline.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Halstad Lutheran Church.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Halstad South Cemetery (Fredrickson, Halstad).

Maynard Ferden

McINTOSH, Minn. -- Maynard Ferden, 73, McIntosh, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at home.

Maynard Lester Ferden was born May 31, 1925, the son of Knute and Louise (Sveen) Ferden, in McIntosh, where he graduated from high school. He married Violet Grimm on Dec. 23, 1946, in McIntosh. They lived on the home place and in Erskine, Minn., before purchasing a farm in Knute Township, Polk County, Minn., in the fall of 1959.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Sharyl (Don) Hornbuckle, Fargo, Karen (Michael) Olson, Fosston, Sandra (David) Olson, Gully, Minn., and Gail (Dean) Strom, McIntosh; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alice Aldrich, Seattle.

He was preceded in death by a grandson; brothers, Obert, Maurice, Hubert and Kenneth; and sisters, Leona, Amy, Myrtle, Thelma and Violette.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, McIntosh.

Visitation: 4: 30 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, McIntosh Community Center, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Robert B. Rickey

FERTILE, Minn. -- Robert B. Rickey, 60, Fertile, died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at home.

Robert Bernard Rickey was born Oct. 19, 1937, the son of Earl and Alice (Guinan) Rickey, in Kansas City, Kan., where he graduated from high school in 1955. He attended Kansas State University, Emporia, Kan. He joined the U.S. Army. He was discharged in 1963, when he moved to California. He worked as a counselor-tutor for Woodland Hills Boys Home in California. He moved to Osakis, Minn., in 1965. He graduated from St. Cloud State University in 1967, with a teaching degree in social studies, geography and speech communications. He moved in 1967 to Fertile, where he taught social studies, geography and speech, and was director of plays and competitive speech. He married Sylvia Vesledahl on July 19, 1980, in Fertile. He retired from the Fertile-Beltrami school system on June 1, 1998, after 31 years of teaching.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Kenneth (Carrie) Vesledahl, Fertile; three grandchildren; his mother, Bella Vista, Ark.; and a sister, Linda (Steve) Redetzke, Bella Vista.

He was preceded in death by his father, and a sister, Carol Walker.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Fertile-Beltrami High School, new gym.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile.

Burial: Concordia Lutheran Cemetery (Erikson-Vik, Fertile).

Sophie Szczepanski

ARGYLE, Minn. -- Sophie Szczepanski, 89, Argyle, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, in North Valley Health Center, Warren, Minn.

Sophie Mary Przekwas was born May 12, 1909, the daughter of Michael and Isabella (Smolkoski) Przekwas, in Caribou Township, Kittson County, Minn. She moved to Florian, Minn., as a young girl. She attended school in Wright Township, Marshall County, Minn. She married Alex Szczepanski in Florian. They made their home and farmed in Tamarac Township, Marshall County. In 1963, they moved to Argyle. Alex Szczepanski died Oct. 12, 1991.

She is survived by daughters, Margaret (Joseph) Gerszewski, Argyle, and Antionette (Alphonse) Fitterer, Tuttle, N.D.; a son, Alen (Gail), Argyle; 33 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; sisters, Theresa Nowacki, Stephen, Minn., Mary Springer, Blue Earth, Minn., Angeline Nowacki, Alexandria, Minn., and Lucy Swenson, Viking, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Clara Szczepanski, Stephen, Minn.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Martin and Lawrence; and sisters, Pauline and Josephine.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Argyle.

Visitation: After 5 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Rose Cemetery (Quanrud-DuBore, Warren, Minn.).

Ramona R. 'Dollie' Shimpa

FISHER, Minn. -- Ramona R. "Dollie" Shimpa, 52, Fisher, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, in Altru Hospital Grand Forks.

Ramona R. Davis was born Sept. 13, 1946, the daughter of Ernest and Alma (Johnson) Davis in Hallock, Minn. She moved with her family to Warren, Minn., where she attended school. She lived in Grand Forks and later in Crookston. She married Julius "Jib" Shimpa on March 15, 1963 in Crookston, where they lived until 1977, when they moved to Fisher. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Renae (Dan) Sistad, Fosston, Minn., Julie (George) Gund, Fisher, and Joy (Jeff) Thomas, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; a son, Robert (Margaret), Hutchinson, Minn.; eight grandchildren; her mother, Crookston; and a sister, Rosemary (Gary) Gruhot, Crookston.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Chapel, Crookston.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

Burial: Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.

Elvira 'Cookie' Thompson

HALSTAD, Minn. -- Elvira "Cookie" Thompson, 89, Halstad, died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, in the Lutheran Memorial Home, Halstad.

Elvira Paulsrud was born Oct. 26, 1908, the daughter of Hans and Lisa (Ueland) Paulsrud, in Shelly Township, Norman County, Minn. She attended school near Shelly, Minn. She did domestic work for area families. She married Leonard Thompson on Nov. 7, 1931, in Halstad. They lived near Halstad until moving into Halstad in 1944. She worked as a cook at the Halstad Cafe and at the Halstad Bakery until her retirement in the early 1970s. Leonard Thompson died in 1971. She moved to the Halstad Lutheran Memorial Home in 1995.

She is survived by daughters, Geraine Marquardt, Minneapolis and Beverly (Orlow) Nokken, Moorhead; sons, Donald (Jane), Mahnomen, Minn., Gene (Patricia), Halstad, and Arlen (Judi), Othello, Wash.; 19 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Eleanor; sisters, Annette Paulsrud, Alma Johnson and Irene Thompson; and brothers, Henry, Selmer and Edwin.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Halstad Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Augustana Lutheran Cemetery, Halstad.

Martin Benson

ERSKINE, Minn. -- Martin Benson, 97, Erskine, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at home.

Martin Bernt Benson was born March 21, 1901, the son of Bernt and Gunhild (Larson) Benson, in Erskine, where he graduated from high school in 1921. He married Marie Gunderson on July 28, 1922, in Red Lake Falls, Minn. They farmed on the home farm. Marie Benson died Jan. 18, 1975. He continued to live on the farm.

He is survived by two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Norman (Sally), Fairbanks, Ark.; and sisters-in-law, Ina Mosser, McIntosh, Minn., Edna Benson, Erskine, and Juanita Benson, Salem, Ore.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Margie Ione Benson; brothers, Carl, Albert, Gust, Benny, Willie, Arthur and Rueben; and sisters, Ruth and Bertha.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Grace Lutheran Church, Erskine.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, Fosston, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Fairview Cemetery.

Vern Jolly

BROOKS, Minn. -- Vern Jolly, 78, Brooks, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at home.

Vern Joseph Jolly was born Nov. 9, 1919, the son of Edmund and Agnes (Thibert) Jolly, in Terrebonne, where he attended school. He married Laura Gagner on April 29, 1941, in Terrebonne, where they lived and farmed.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Tom (Karen), Milton, Wis. and Dan (Shirley), Red Lake Falls; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Jolly, S. Beloit, Ill.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Lucille Coauette, Crookston, Buelah Gervals and Samona Notorinos, both of St. Paul, and Bernice Sauer, Grand Forks; and a sister-in-law, Fran Jolly, Circle Pines, Minn.

He was preceded in death by a son, James; a grandson; brothers, Bernard and Andrew; and brothers-in-law, William Coauette, Ted Gervais and Ben Sauer.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday in St. Anthony Catholic Church, Terrebonne, Minn.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a 5 p.m. prayer service, in Petterson Funeral Home, Red Lake Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Church cemetery.
