Mary Katherine Matthew Watson
Mary Katherine Matthew Watson of 5th St., Proctor, died Sun., June 5, 2005 in St. Mary’s Medical Center, surrounded by her family. She was 82.

She was born on May 30, 1923 in Duluth to Robert and Mary Catherine (Dwyer) Matthew and was a lifelong Duluth and Proctor resident. She was a 1941 graduate of Denfeld High School and a graduate of the Univ. of Minn. Duluth in 1979, receiving a degree in music. She married Donald P. Watson on Sept. 17, 1949 at St. James Catholic Church. Mary worked as a secretary for the FBI in Washington DC from 1942 to 1945 and for the law firm of Gillette, Nye and Harries from 1946-1949. She was a church organist for over 68 years, retiring in Feb., 2005. She started her music career in the 6th grade at St. James School. Mary was organist at St. James Catholic Church for 47 years, Duluth Congrega-tional Church for seven years and Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet for the past 16 years and had been accompanist for the West Duluth American Legion Chorus for many years. She served as Dean and treasurer of the Arrowhead Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, having been a member for 40 years. She was also a member of St. James Catholic Church, and the Proctor American Legion Auxiliary. She had a great love for the Minnesota Twins, her family and spending time with her brother and sister and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald in 1970, and a brother, James Matthew.

Survivors include her children James (Joan) of Stacy, William (Anne) of Lafayette, Colo., Mary Ellen (Sam) Krieger of Hastings, and Donald, Thomas and Anne Marie Watson, all of Proctor; brother Richard (Bette) Matthew of Duluth, sister Helen (James) Brooks of McHenry, Ill. and grandchildren Matthew, Geoffrey and Katherine Watson and Steven, Jennifer, Brian and Mary June Krieger, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday in Bell Brothers Funeral Home, with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in St. James Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Charles Flynn and Rev. Fr. James Bissonette officiating.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. If so desired, memorial contributions may be directed to St. James Parochial School.

Robert W. Seguin
Robert W. Seguin, who attended Proctor High School, died Wed., Sept. 29, 2004 in Germany from acute leukemia. He was 64.

He was born in Duluth on June 2, 1940. Robert was a retired member of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother John and sister Joy Ann VanValkenburg.

He is survived by his son David of Duluth, daughter Mamuela “Tina” (Dan) Thornton of Fla., twin brother Robin (Pat) Seguin of Ariz., twin sisters Karen (Robert) Rasner and Karol (George) Roland, all of Duluth, four grandchildren, several nephews, and one niece.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sat., June 18 at Gethsemane Covenant Church, 4380 Ugstad Rd. Pastor Steve Weihsmann will officiate.

Marilyn A. Kubiak (Abrahamson)
Art Abrahamson is saddened by the death of his sister, Marilyn A. Kubiak (Abrahamson). She died Sun., June 12, 2005 at Viewcrest Health Center in Duluth. She was 84.

She was born in Cloquet, and raised in Duluth by her mother Aila and stepfather Art Abrahamson. After graduating from Denfeld High School, Marilyn married Chester H. Kubiak in 1940.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Chet, brothers Roger and Donald Abrahamson, and a sister Dorothy Jacobson.

Marilyn is survived by her children Larry (Diane) Kubiak of Duluth, Judy (Tom) Oliver of Conroe, Texas, Kathy (Richard) Hoffman of Oshkosh, Wisc., and daughter Lee Kubiak of St. Paul, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her sister Doris Olson.

Services were held yesterday at Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel with Pastor Michael Main officiating.

Donald F. Syring
Donald F. Syring of Proctor died Sat., June 18, 2005 in St. Mary’s Hospice surrounded by his loving family. He was 76.

He was born in Superior, Wis. on July 27, 1928 to Ewald and Margaret Syring. Don graduated from Superior Central High School in 1946 and served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. Don owned the City Service gas station at The Plaza and delivered fuel oil for Terminal Transport. He owned Eric’s Body Shop from 1970 to 1988, retiring in 1989. Don loved fishing, hunting, trapping and growing tomatoes.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, wife Peggy, brother, Robert and brother-in-law Sam.

He is survived by his son Steven (Pam) Syring, daughter Suzanne (Bruce) Syring-Nemec, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, sister Ruth Ackmann, sister-in-law Arlene Syring, three nieces and three nephews.

Services were Tuesday, with Rev. Jerome Evavold officiating.

Robert J. Galinski
Judy (Kevin) Comnick is mourning the death of her father, Robert J. Galinski. He died Sat., June 18, 2005 at St. Mary’s Medical Center at the age of 80.

He was born in Duluth on May 27, 1925 to Joseph and Agnes Galinski. Robert was a Navy Veteran of WWII, serving in the Aleutian Islands. He graduated from UMD, where he played halfback on the football team and was named to the All-NSIC team in 1946 and 1947. Robert married Lois Enquist on Aug. 18, 1951. He was a high school teacher and coached football and basketball. He retired from Travelers Insurance Co. Robert was active in St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council, Pugs Club, West Duluth VFW 6320, and volunteered at the Courage Center and also the Special Olympics.

He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, sister Loretta Hoyt, and brothers Bernard and Raymond.

He is survived by his daughters Mary (Richard) Husby and Judy (Kevin) Comnick, both of Duluth, Susan Galinski of Texas, and Diane (John) Lavin of St. Michael, brother William (Martha) of Duluth, sister Jane (Jerry) Krause of Wis., grandchildren Eric, Laura (Dustin), Kasey, Jacob and Christy, sisters-in-law, Mavis Marinkovich and Mildred Enquist, and many nieces and nephews.

Services were Wednesday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Burial was at Oneota Cemetery.

Joan A. Caskey
Joan A. Caskey of Duluth died Wed., June 15, 2005 at a Duluth hospital, surrounded by her loving family after a long battle with Crohns Disease. She was 72.

She was born in Green Bay, Wis. on June 17, 1932, and moved to Duluth in 1950 to pursue a nursing degree at the College of St. Scholastica. She married Leonard Caskey in Traverse City, Mich. in 1953. Joan had worked as a bookkeeper at both Caskey Auto Body and Holy Family Catholic Church. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, where she was an active volunteer.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents and sister Mary Lou Horning.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Len, sons Kevin (Collette) of Big Lake, Pat (Barb) of Duluth, daughters Sally (Don) Seehus of Duluth, Barb (Lee) Haugen of St. Paul Park, Mary (Dan) Hartel of Hermantown and Teresa (Brian) Olson of Duluth, 23 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, her step-mother Lucille Kane of Wis., and many nieces and nephews.

Burial at Oneota Cemetery.

Marion “Mim” Allan
Greg (Pam) Allan of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother, Marion “Mim” Allan. She died Thurs., June 16, 2005 at St. Eligus Health Center at the age of 81.

She was born in Duluth on May 20, 1924 to Axel and Tillie Peterson and was a graduate of Denfeld High School. Mim married Wesley Allan on Nov. 29, 1947. She worked at Marshall-Wells and Ace Hardware. She later retired from St. Luke’s Hospital. She was an active member of First Covenant Church and was a Twins fan.

Mim is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister Evelyn.

Along with Greg, she is also survived by another son, Chuck (Lori) and her daughter, Patti (Roger) Goodreau, both of Hermantown, a sister, Adeline Wedin of Duluth, grandchildren Jason Allan, Dustin Tessier, Mellisa Tessier, Jessup Pelkey, and Roger Jr. (Heather) Goodreau, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Burial at Union Cemetery.

Debra Jean “Debbie” (Howard) Fiege
Services will be held today for Debra Jean “Debbie” (Howard) Fiege. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on Fri., June 17, 2005 after a long and courageous battle with Huntington’s Disease. She was 46.

Debbie was born to Nancy and Ervin Howard on April 1, 1959, in Allen Park, Mich. She graduated from Duluth East in 1977. Debra was a dental assistant for many years. She was united in marriage to her devoted husband, Mark Fiege, on May 21, 1983.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ervin Howard, and her father-in-law, George Fiege Jr.

Debbie is survived by her husband, Mark, of Duluth, children Amanda and Justin, both at home, her mother Nancy Howard of Ill., brother Robert (Lisa) Howard of Mont., sister Donna (Larry) Kilpo of Duluth and brother Glenn (Deborah) Howard of Ill.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Thurs., June 23, 2005 in the Duluth Bible Church, 201 West St. Andrews St., Duluth. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. All memorials will be donated to the Huntington’s Society of Minnesota.

Robert W. Strom Sr.
Robert W. Strom Sr., who graduated from Proctor High School and worked on the DM&IR Railroad after 40 years of Service as a General Foreman of the Store Department, died Fri., June 17, 2005, from an acute respiratory infection in St. Luke’s Hospital. His loving family was at his side. He was 82.

He was born August 6, 1922 in Aneta, North Dakota to Albert and Christine Strom. He was the 7th son of a 7th son and that is how his unique life began. After graduating from Proctor High School, he met and married Mildred Emilia Ferrario who worked with him on the DM&IR Railroad. They were married 56 years before her untimely death in 2001. He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II stationed in the Philippine Islands. Robert had retired from the DM&IR. He was a former member of Proctor United Methodist Church, where he and Millie had been youth leaders. Dad was very athletic and competitive, enjoying many years of bowling at the old club house in Proctor, playing many rounds of golf with whoever was available to shoot a round with him at that very same golf course. Playing softball on the church league, he was known as the “Old Man” pitcher because he was in his 40’s while his teammates were in their teens and early 20’s. In more recent years, he played cribbage twice a week at the Senior Center and then once a week at Westminster Presbyterian Church. His friends at the Senior Center had become a HUGE part of his FUN and he had started buying more up to date western shirts to present a more “styling” appearance. He enjoyed his family, grandkids and great-grandkids. Bob was a kind and generous man. He liked to make people laugh, and had kept his wits about him until the end.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Millie, a son Robert W. Jr., brothers Clarence, Milford, Harris, Ernie, Roy, and Bennie, and a sister Gladys.

He is survived by a daughter Susan (Brian) Reppe of Duluth, a daughter-in-law Cathy Strom of Saginaw, grandchildren Brent (Sarah Fulton) Reppe, Robert W. (Jen Schilling) Strom III, Terri Jo Reppe, Andrea (Allan) Kelly, and Dawn Reppe, great-grandchildren Bryce, Gabriel, Sophie, Payton, Savannah, Nicholas, and Jesse, a sister Jeanette Scanlon of Duluth, a sister-in-law Irene Ferrario, and a niece Renie (Kevin) Bergman, numerous friends, relatives, nieces and nephews, and his special dog Scrappie.

Private family services were held with prayer and song at Bob’s bedside.

William “Bill” Kuehn
William “Bill” Kuehn of Proctor is saddened by the death of his brother, Roy R. Kuehn of Grand Ave. He passed away on Mon., June 13, 2005, in St. Mary’s Hospice. He was 76.

Roy was born in Duluth and had been a lifelong resident. He grew up in the Little Italy neighborhood and attended Emerson School and then Ely School. At the age of 18, he went to work for Diamond Tool and Horseshoe Company and was employed there for 43 years.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, half-brother Leonard and half-sisters Thelma Kuehn and Iris Lawrence.

He is also survived by his other brothers, Howard (Marjorie) and Raymond (Roberta), both of Duluth, and 12 nieces and nephews.

Services were last Friday in First Presbyterian Church. Burial in Forest Hill Cemetery.
