Janene M. Wood

Janene M. Wood, 47, Spicer, Minn., formerly of Grand Forks, N.D., died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, in Fairview University Hospital, Minneapolis.

Janene M. Bougie was born Feb. 24, 1951, the daughter of Robert and Jeanne (Merrell) Bougie, in Grand Forks, where she graduated from high school in 1969. She attended nursing school in Denver, becoming an licensed practical nurse in 1972. She married Bob Wood on Jan. 4, 1971, in Denver. They lived in Denver, where she worked in St. Lukes Hospital. They lived in several communities including Austin, Minn., Dallas, Oklahoma City, Houston, Wichita, Kan., and Rockton, Ill. In 1995, they moved to Spicer. She worked at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minn., as a surgical nurse until December 1996. From January to March 1997, she worked as a surgical assistant for Dr. Joseph Wang in Willmar.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Amy, Minnetonka, Minn., and Andrea, Minneapolis; a son, Brian, Lawrence, Kan.; her mother, Salem, Ore.; sisters, Jeanne (Al) Spencer, Salem, and Becky Barton, Missoula, Mont.; and brothers, Bob (Linda), Port Angeles, Calif., and Jim, San Juan Islands, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Peace Lutheran Church, New London, Minn.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Johnson Funeral Home, New London, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery, New London.

Christine C. Ostgarden

FERTILE, Minn. -- Christine C. Ostgarden, 91, Fertile, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, in Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile.

Christine Carolina Lee was born March 17, 1907, the daughter of John Lee and Kaspara Aagnes, in Fertile. She was raised by her grandparents, Christian and Carolina Aagnes. She attended school in Fertile. She worked in the potato fields, and for Obert Knutson as a cook and waitress in his cafe. She married Melvin Ostgarden on Nov. 28, 1931, in Crookston. They lived and farmed in Fertile. Melvin Ostgarden died Nov. 3, 1954. She moved to Fertile in the late 1950s, and purchased the living quarters of the Fertile House Hotel. She moved to Fair Meadow Nursing Home in May 1995.

She is survived by a half sister, Henrietta (Gaylord) Villano, St. Paul; and a sister-in-law, Agnes Ostgarden, Fertile.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert; and several half siblings.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Little Norway Lutheran Church, Fertile.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, with a 6 p.m. prayer service, Erikson-Vik Funeral Home, Fertile.

Burial: Little Norway Lutheran Cemetery.

Richard J. Peters

BADGER, Minn. -- Richard J. Peters, 67, Badger, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, in Roseau (Minn.) Area Hospital.

Richard James Peters was born June 24, 1931, the son of Norman and Ellen (Davey) Peterson, in LaCrosse, Wis. He grew up in Brownsville, Minn. He joined the U.S. Army in 1947, and later graduated from high school in Loretto, Minn. He lived in Thief River Falls-Plummer, Minn., area, until moving to Oregon. He moved to Roseau-Badger area two months ago.

He is survived by sons, Timothy (Stephanie), Badger, Jeffrey (Deanna), Roseau, Joseph (Nicki), Thief River Falls, and Jason, Plummer; daughters, Fawn (Troy) Ray and Colleen (Dale) Bergeron, both of Thief River Falls, and Kim (Roy) Holmes, Plummer; stepfather, Joe Toomey, Brownsville; brothers, Pat Toomey, LaCrosse, and Mike Toomey, Brownsville; and sisters, Jane Wohlwend, On Alaska, Mary Pray, Colorado Springs, Colo., Joan Strub, Lansing, Iowa, Laura Deirson, Caledonia, Minn., Terri Virock, Hokah, Minn., and Renae Spinner, Brownsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant son.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Roseau.

Visitation: Two hours before services in the chapel.

Burial: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Badger.

Gustav Vatnsdal

BADGER, Minn. -- Gustav Vatnsdal, 84, Badger, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, in Roseau (Minn.) Area Hospital.

Gustav Vatnsdal was born March 3, 1914, the son of Johann and Jonina (Gislason) Vatnsdal, in Pohlitz Township, Roseau County, where he attended school. He married Margaret Larson on March 21, 1939, in Roseau. They lived on the home place and farmed.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Orelle (Joan), Badger, Wayne (Linda), Scobey, Mont., Gene, Faribault, Minn., and Ronald (Patty), Roseau; a daughter, Iris (Alan) Herling, Roseau; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Lee, Ross, Minn.

He was preceded in death by two infant daughters; brothers, Valdmar, Jonas, John and Edward; and sisters, Emma Melby and Asta Melby.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Concordia Lutheran Church, Ross.

Visitation: Noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Roseau, and one hour before services in the church.

Edgar N. DeMolee

ROSEAU, Minn. -- Edgar N. DeMolee, 91, Roseau, formerly of Warroad, Minn., died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, in Roseau Area Hospital.

Edgar Nils DeMolee was born March 29, 1907, the son of Lars and Karolina (Molin) DeMolee, in Moranville Township, Roseau County, Minn. He attended school in Winnipeg, and worked odd jobs. He joined the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He returned to Warroad and purchased a farm. He married Eleanor Nelson in 1950. He worked for several construction jobs Marvin Windows, Forestry Department, CN Railroad, post office, and recently as the custodian for the Warroad High School. Eleanor DeMolee died Sept. 14, 1974. He married Phyllis Carlson Gavelin in 1986.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Daniel (Laurel) and Frederic (Vonda), both of Warroad; a step daughter, Pat (Dean) Brateng, Roseau; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and sisters, Dagmar Kallstrom, Vancouver, B.C., Ingeborg Monson, Stockholm, Sweden, and Esther Pickthall, Preston, England.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Services: 10 a.m. today, Zion Lutheran Church, Warroad.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Warroad (Helgeson, Roseau).

Ralph Nowacki

ARGYLE, Minn. -- Ralph Nowacki, 66, Eden Prairie, Minn., formerly of Argyle, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, in Unity Hospital, Fridley, Minn.

Ralph Joseph Nowacki was born Feb. 24, 1932, the son of John and Praxides (Rabaski) Nowacki, in Argyle, where he attended school. He married Adele Szcepanski on Oct. 1, 1952. In the 1970s, he moved to Minneapolis. He owned and operated the Shady Oak Service, a trucking and towing company.

He is survived by his children, Wayne, Kathleen (Ron) Markgraf, Cynthia (Richard) Witkowski, Ralph Jr. (Monique), Marilyn Nowacki, Darrin, and David; seven grandchildren; and sisters, Delphine Hogan and Adele Guthrie, both of Chicago, and Theresa Gratzek, Argyle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clarence and Arnold; and a sister, Isabelle Kuznia.

Services: 9: 30 a.m. Friday, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Argyle.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. John's Cemetery (Quanrud-DuBore, Warren, Minn.).

Ernest Lofstrom

KARLSTAD, Minn. -- Ernest Lofstrom, 66, Karlstad, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at Karlstad Memorial Nursing Center, where he had lived since July.

Ernest Palmer Lofstrom was born Dec. 11, 1931, the son of Albert and Hilma (Larson) Lofstrom, in Strandquist, Minn., where he graduated from high school in 1949. He attended Moorhead State Teachers College and worked at Strandquist Elevator. He joined the U.S. Air Force and served for 21 years at various military bases throughout the world. He married Muriel Anderson on June 20, 1955, in Karlstad. He retired from the Air Force in April 1971. In June, they moved to Karlstad. He was a charter member of Karlstad Eagles Club. Muriel Lofstrom died Oct. 29, 1991.

He is survived by a son, Steve (Laurie), Karlstad; daughters, Denise (James) Anderson, Lake Bronson, Minn., and Jodi (Sean) Spilde, Karlstad; nine grandchildren; and sisters, Adele Daffron, Kent, Wash., Fern Wilson, Portland, Ore., and Roseline (Norman) Campbell, Seattle.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter; his parents; and brothers, Louis and Elmer.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, First Lutheran Church, Karlstad.

Visitation: After 7 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Collins Funeral Chapel, Karlstad, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Karlstad Cemetery.

Military Rites: Karlstad American Legion Post No. 445.

Oscar Qualey

GULLY, Minn. -- Oscar Qualey, 98, Gully, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, in First Care Nursing Home, Fosston, Minn.

Oscar Qualey was born March 25, 1900, the son of Amund and Ingeborg Qualey, in Wanke, Minn. He lived in Gully his entire life. He worked as a woodsman and later farmed. He married Inga Tinnesand on Sept. 12, 1931, in Crookston. She died March 26, 1992.

He is survived by daughters, Evelyn Myrum and Elaine (Parker) Anderson, both of Clearbrook, Minn., Betty (Gary) Ost, Biwabik, Minn., Geraldine (Bill) Staye, Howard Lake, Minn., Helen (Loren) Klopp, Thief River Falls, Sandra (Gary) Buerman, Bloomington, Minn., Joann (Burl) Houts, New Hope, Minn., Pat (Arnie) Westling, Turtle River, Minn., and Carol (Darwin) Eidelbes, Goodridge, Minn.; a son, David (Lisa), Goodridge; 29 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Opal Eck; a son, Howard; six sisters; and five brothers.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, Lund Lutheran Church, Gully.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley, Minn., and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Lund Lutheran Cemetery, Gully.

Bruce Ravndalen

ROOSEVELT, Minn. -- Bruce Ravndalen, 31, Roosevelt, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, as the result of an accident in Grand Forks.

Bruce Otto Ravndalen was born Sept. 13, 1966, the son of Otto and Eileen (Olson) Ravndalen, in Roseau, Minn. He grew up in the Roosevelt area. He attended school in Warroad, Minn., graduating from high school in 1986. He worked for Marvin Windows for five years. He attended Northland Community and Technical College. He had been living in Thief River Falls for the past few years and working at Northern Pride.

He is survived by his mother, Glenwood, Minn.; sisters, Brenda (Udean) Sargent, Glenwood, and Barbara (Doug) Smith, Newfolden, Minn.; and a brother, Robert (Marlin), Roosevelt.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, in Mount Carmel Lutheran Church, Roosevelt.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, in Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Warroad, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Silent City Cemetery, Roosevelt.

Electa B. Thoren

SOLWAY, Minn. -- Electa B. Thoren, 91, Solway, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.

Electa Belle Sutton was born Aug. 1, 1907, the daughter of Harry and Nettie (Fithian) Sutton, in Walbach, Neb. She grew up and attended school in Nebraska. In 1920, she moved with her family to South Dakota, where she lived until 1933, when she moved to Saum, Minn. She married Bert Thoren on Sept. 11, 1940, in Saum. They had lived in the Solway area since. She taught school in South Dakota for seven years. She earned her teaching degree from Bemidji State College. She taught in Solway, Walker, Minn., and the Bemidji area. She retired after 40 years of teaching. Bert Thoren preceded her in death.

She is survived by brothers, Elmer, Saum, Leonard (Mable), Beaumont, Calif., Harold (Miriam), Littleton, Colo., and Earl (Doris), Greeley, Colo; and sisters, Esther Bruns, Bemidji, Letha Sutton, Grand Rapids, Minn., and Donna Sutton, Park Rapids, Minn.

She was preceded in death by three brothers; and three sisters.

Services: 2: 30 p.m. Wednesday, in Solway Bible Chapel.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, in Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, and half an hour before services in the church.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji.
