Bruce Ravndalen

ROOSEVELT, Minn. -- Bruce Ravndalen, 31, Roosevelt, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, as the result of an accident in Grand Forks.

Bruce Otto Ravndalen was born Sept. 13, 1966, the son of Otto and Eileen (Olson) Ravndalen, in Roseau, Minn. He grew up in the Roosevelt area. He attended school in Warroad, Minn., graduating from high school in 1986. He worked for Marvin Windows for five years. He attended Northland Community and Technical College. He had been living in Thief River Falls for the past few years and working at Northern Pride.

He is survived by his mother, Glenwood, Minn.; sisters, Brenda (Udean) Sargent, Glenwood, and Barbara (Doug) Smith, Newfolden, Minn.; and a brother, Robert (Marlin), Roosevelt.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, in Mount Carmel Lutheran Church, Roosevelt.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, in Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Warroad, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Silent City Cemetery, Roosevelt.

Catherine J. Lenzen

MALLORY, Minn. -- Catherine J. Lenzen, 87, formerly of Mallory, Minn., died Aug. 27, 1998, in Portland, Ore.

Catherine Coulter was born Nov. 4, 1910, the daughter of C.C. and Rachel Coulter, in Mallory, where she attended school. She graduated from high school in East Grand Forks. She married Harold Lenzen on Nov. 20, 1929. They lived in Grand Forks until 1951, when they moved to Portland.

She is survived by a son, Raymond (Judy), Beaverton, Ore.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lorraine Leake, Grand Forks.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two daughters; and a son.

Burial: Rose City Cemetery, Portland.

Ernest Melvie Sr.

VIKING, Minn. -- Ernest Melvie Sr., 89, Viking, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, in Northwest Medical Center, Convalescent Nursing Care Unit, Thief River Falls.

Ernest Theodore Melvie was born Jan. 17, 1909, the son of Nels and Elizabeth (Loge) Melvie, in New Solum Township, Marshall County, Minn., where he attended rural school. He moved to Duluth, where he worked in the copper mines in the upper Peninsula of Michigan. He returned in 1934 and purchased a farm. He married Alma Rust on Dec. 29, 1939. He farmed, did custom work, began a construction business, and delivered mail until retiring in 1987.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Marilyn Wahl, Greenbush, Minn., Carolyn (Louis) Hugg, Andover, Minn., Orlette (Al) Gjerde, Thief River Falls, and Darlene (Wilbur) Bogue, Hackensack, Minn.; sons, Ernest (Theresa) and Erwin "Erv" (Viola), both of Viking; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a great-grandson; brothers, Toby, Martin, John, Eli, and an infant Toby; and sisters, Anna Kelly, Bertina Regan, Gina Nelson and Alma Melvie.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, First Baptist Church, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bethlehem Cemetery, New Solum Township, Marshall County, Minn.

Tillie Brenna

CLEARBROOK, Minn. -- Tillie Brenna, 94, Clearbrook, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, in Good Samaritan Center, Clearbrook.

Tillie Amanda Nyland was born Feb. 6, 1904, the daughter of Ole and Aletta Nyland, in Cottonwood, Minn. She moved with her family to Eden Township, Polk County, Minn., where she grew up. She attended school in Fosston, Minn. She married Helmer Brenna on Oct. 16, 1921. They lived in Eden Township. Helmer Brenna died June 1, 1973. She worked at the Good Samaritan Center until her retirement.

She is survived by daughters, Violet (Leo) Huot, Minneapolis, Mavis (George) Klema, Clearbrook, Luaine (George) Andrys, Grand Forks, and Shirley Maroney, Coon Rapids; 30 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nora Christianson, Walker, Minn.

She was preceded in death by a son, Harvey; two grandchildren; brothers, Helmer and Albert; and sisters, Thea Nyland and Anna Lind.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Good Samaritan Center Chapel, Clearbrook.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, Fosston, Minn.

Burial: Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Eden Township.

Richard Cavalier

ERSKINE, Minn. -- Richard Cavalier, 64, Erskine, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, in First Care Nursing Home, Fosston, Minn.

Richard Albert Cavalier was born March 26, 1934, the son of Samuel and Matilda (Jerome) Cavalier, in Leroy, N.D. He attended school in Walhalla, N.D. He married Irene Bondal on Jan. 31, 1955, in Walhalla. They lived in Walhalla until 1962. They lived in Crookston and Moorhead before settling in 1964 in East Grand Forks, where he was a machanic at Ron's Auto. In 1992, they moved to Erskine. Irene Cavalier died in 1993. He married Teresa Barstad on Oct. 4, 1994, in Crookston. They lived in Erskine.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mavis (Charles) Davis, Fosston; sons, Victor (Heather), Fosston, and Doug (Joanne), Baxter, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Sam (Pat) of California, and John (Jan), of Iowa; and sisters, Kathy Hardin of California, Doreen Hiebert and Dora (Andy) Hiebert, both of Walhalla, and Dee, Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Richard "Dick" Jr.; and a sister, Mert Schill.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fosston.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in the church.

Burial: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery (Carlin-Hoialmen, Fosston).

Sherry L. Huffman

ROSEAU, Minn. -- Sherry L. Huffman, 38, Roseau, died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, in Roseau Area Hospital.

Sherry L. Olson was born June 13, 1960, the daughter of Lester and Betty (Holm) Olson, in St. Paul, where she graduated from high school in 1979. She moved to Roseau County, Minn. in 1980. She worked as a waitress and also as an aide for a nursing home.

She is survived by her parents, Minneapolis; brothers, Douglas, St. Paul and Kevin, St. Cloud; and a sister, Kathy Olson, Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald; and her grandparents.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Riverside Lutheran Church, Wannaska, Minn.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Mickinock Cemetery, Wannaska (Helgeson, Roseau).

Richard A. Aaserude

CASS LAKE, Minn. -- Richard A. Aaserude, 60, Cass Lake, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in Henderson, Nev.

Richard Arthur Aaserude was born Oct. 10, 1938, the son of Arthur and Violet (Olson) Aaserude, in Grand Forks. He grew up and attended school in Mekinock, N.D. He attended North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton. He joined the U.S. Navy and later moved to the Minneapolis area, where he worked with the United States Postal Service, Minneapolis.

He is survived by brothers, Melvin and Steven, both of Cass Lake, Jerome, Minneapolis, Calvin (Trudy), Farmington, Ark., and Daniel (Leslie), St. Paul; and sisters, Carol (Don) Hill, Fargo, Diane (Alex) Gallegos, Winona, Minn., LaVerne (Roger) Vold, Audubon, Minn., Gloria (Norm) Lavendowski, Encampment, Wyo., and Penny Aaserude, Broken Arrow, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, First Assembly of God Church, Bemidji.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Ten Lake Township Cemetery, Beltrami County, Minn. (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).

Gertrude A. Christensen

FELTON, Minn. -- Gertrude A. Christensen, 87, Moorhead, formerly of Felton, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, in Dakota Heartland Hospital, Fargo.

Gertrude Alvina Fenske was born Jan. 13, 1912 the daughter of Leo and Louise (Giinthir) Fenske, in Renville County, Minn. She attended school in various communities in Minnesota. She did housework for people in the Borup, Minn., area. She married Ernest Christensen on Dec. 1, 1930, Ada, Minn. They lived and farmed in Clay County, Minn., near Felton and Borup. Ernest Christensen died in 1975. She moved to the Fairmont in Moorhead in April 1998.

She is survived by a daughter, Irene (Florent) Rheault, Scappoose, Ore.; a son, Alan (Sharon), Borup; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Martin, Felton.

She was preceded in death by a grandson; and a sister, Anna Woltjer.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Felton.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Fredrikson Funeral Home, Ada, Minn., and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Ada City Cemetery.

Cheryl Nelson

Cheryl Nelson, 35, Blaine, Minn., formerly of Grand Forks, died of cancer, Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at home.

Cheryl Joanne Lien was born Aug. 8, 1963, the daughter of Elroy and Mae (Lunak) Lien, in Grand Forks, where she graduated from high school. She attended UND. She married Floyd Nelson in July 19, 1986, in Grand Forks. They have lived in the Twin Cities area for the past seven years.

She is survived by her husband; sons, Keith and Paul, both at home; her mother, Grand Forks; brothers, Rodney (Taksina) Lunak, Mound, Minn., Lynn (Viola), Park Rapids, Minn., Ronald (Vicki), Aurora, Colo., and Bruce "Chip" (Kathy) and Richard, both of Grand Forks; and sisters, Sandra (Roger) Amundson, East Grand Forks, Judith Ringler and Caryol (Tony) Kobetsky, both of Grand Forks, Mary (Elwood) Blair, Neche, N.D., and Jeannie (Dick) Gregory, Port Huron, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her father; and a brother, Bradley "Tony."

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Holy Family Catholic Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: 11: 30 a.m. to 12: 45 p.m. Wednesday at the church (Amundson, Grand Forks).

Clarence 'Toby' Carlson

WARREN, Minn. -- Clarence "Toby" Larson, 76, Warren, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.

Clarence Leroy Carlson was born Oct. 8, 1922, the son of Ed and Minnie (Lindgren) Carlson, in Seva Township, Kittson County, Minn. He grew up in the Strandquist and Karlstad, Minn., areas. He attended country school. He married Joyce Borsvold on Oct. 20, 1948, in Red Lake Falls, Minn. They lived in Strandquist and Kennedy, Minn., before moving to Warren, in 1959. He worked as a mechanic for Massey-Harris in Kennedy and Warren. He worked for the Marshall County Highway Department as a mechanic from 1967 to 1980. He also worked for Bob Peterson on his farm for 10 years.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Sandra (Kevin) Dux, Buxton, N.D., and Lynnae (Dan) Gilder, Little Falls, Minn.; six grandchildren; sisters, Luella Sjostrand, Lancaster, Minn., Fern (Virgil) Froemke, Buckley, Wash., and Yvonne Twede, Moses Lake, Wash.; brothers, Oscar, Twin Falls, Idaho, and Gerald (Mary), Warren; and sisters-in-law, Leona Carlson, Kennedy, and Marian Carlson, Plymouth, Minn.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Reinold and Harvey; and a sister in infancy.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, First Lutheran Church, Warren.

Visitation: After 6: 30 p.m. today, Quanrud-DuBore Funeral Home, Warren, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Warren.

Military rites: Warren American Legion.

Ella Salvevold

ADA, Minn. -- Ella Salvevold, 94, Ada, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in Halstad (Minn.) Lutheran Memorial Home, where she had lived since November 1998.

Ella Marie Anderson was born Dec. 24, 1904, the daughter of Gust and Elizabeth (Sprung) Anderson, in Ada, where she attended school. She later studied music at Concordia College, Moorhead. She married Edwin Lee in 1925. They farmed near Ada and Perley, Minn. In 1938, they bought a farm near Hitterdal, Minn. Edwin Lee died in 1951. She married Edgar Salvevold in 1954 in Culbertson, Mont. He died in 1957. She worked at the Westland Cafe, Culbertson. In 1971, she moved back to Ada to help care for her mother.

She is survived by a daughter, Marcella Erickson, Ada; a son, Jerome (Linda) Lee, Minot; five grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren; sisters, Mabel Lelm, Grace Roesch and Margaret Visser, all of Ada; and a brother-in-law, John Stehr, Ada.

She was preceded in death by sons, Leonard and Clayton; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; sisters, Ruth Hoven and Florence Stehr; and a brother, Norman Anderson.

Services: 11 a.m. today, Grace Lutheran Church, Ada.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Ada City Cemetery (Fredrikson, Ada).
