Agnes Dahlquist

ROSEAU, Minn.--Agnes Dahlquist, 94, Roseau, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, in Sheltering Oaks Nursing Home, Roseau.

Agnes Viola Moe was born Feb. 7, 1904, the daughter of Bert and Louise Moe, in Minot. She grew up and attended school in Roseau. She married Carl Dahlquist on June 28, 1922, in Roseau. They lived in Bemidji, Grafton, N.D., and returned to Roseau in 1940. She worked as a cook at the Roseau School in the 1960's. Carl Dahlquist died in 1993. She was a charter member of the Roseau Garden Club and the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by daughters, Shirley (Paul) Montan, Wadena, Minn., Nancy (Norm) Savee-Aamodt, Los Altos, Calif., Judy (Darrell) Borgen, Badger, Minn., and Mary (Harry) Peyerl, St. Cloud, Minn.; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Smasal, St. Paul.

She was preceded in death by a son, Raymond; a grandson; three sisters; and three brothers.

Services: 11 a.m., Monday, in Messiah Lutheran Church, Roseau.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with an 8 p.m. prayer service in Helgeson Funeral Home, Roseau, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Hope Cemetery, Roseau.

Darrell Nesteby

GREENBUSH, Minn. -- Darrell Nesteby, 45, Greenbush, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, in Dakota Heartland Hospital, Fargo.

Darrell Ernest Nesteby was born Jan. 31, 1953, the son of Ernest and Elaine (Haugtvedt) Nesteby, in Greenbush, where he graduated from high school in 1971. He graduated from St. Cloud (Minn.) Vo-Tech College in 1974 as a journeyman electrician and worked for Lieberg Electric, Greenbush, and Marvin Windows, Warroad, Minn. He became blind at age 25 and attended Lighthouse for the Blind, Duluth.

He is survived by his mother, Greenbush; a brother, Larry (Val), Greenbush; and a sister, Linda (Lloyd) Bush, Harwood, N.D.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Bethel Lutheran Church, Greenbush.

Visitation: After 5 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Gieseke Funeral Chapel, Greenbush, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bethel Lutheran Cemetery.

Nels E. Osell

ROSEAU, Minn. -- Nels E. Osell, 92, Roseau, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in Sheltering Oaks Nursing Home, Roseau, where he had been residing since April 1995.

Nels Eugene Osell was born Sept. 6, 1906, the son of Erik and Martha (Lundquist) Osell, in Grimstad Township, Roseau County, Minn. He attended school in Wannaska, Minn. He lived and farmed in Wannaska. He worked for Polaris Industries. After his retirement, he moved to Roseau and then to Thief River Falls. He returned to Roseau. He married Ruth Palm on June 20, 1939, in Roseau. She preceded him in death.

He is survived by nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers; and two sisters.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Riverside Lutheran Church, Wannaska.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Roseau, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Palmville Cemetery, Wannaska.

Leonard Bjorkman

ROSEAU, Minn. -- Leonard Bjorkman, 89, Roseau, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in Sheltering Oaks Nursing Home, Roseau.

Leonard Bjorkman was born July 17, 1909, the son of Erick and Rose (Holm) Bjorkman, in Roseau, where he attended school. He farmed in the area until retiring in 1974. In 1950, he moved into Roseau. In 1992, he entered the Sheltering Oaks.

He is survived by cousins.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Luella and Eileen; and a brother, Carl.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, First Lutheran Church, Roseau.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Roseau, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Moe-Rose Cemetery, Roseau.

Ruth P. Hansen

STEPHEN, Minn. -- Ruth P. Hansen, 78, Stephen, Minn., died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in the Good Samaritan Center, Warren, Minn.

Ruth P. Hansen was born Jan. 21, 1920, the daughter of Jens and Christine (Jensen) Hansen, in Sinnott Township, Marshall County, Minn., where she grew up. She attended school in Stephen. She graduated from the New York Hairdressing Academy, Fargo, in 1943. She worked as an apprentice in Roseau, Minn. In January 1945, she purchased Ruth's Beauty Shop in Stephen along with her sister, Mabel. They have been operating the beauty shop, now known as Modern Beauty Shop.

She is survived by sisters, Sarah Hansen, Grand Forks, and Mabel Koser, Stephen.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Clifford and Kenneth.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, First Lutheran Church, Stephen.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Adamson-Austin Funeral Home, Stephen.

Burial: St. Petri Cemetery, Stephen.

Virginia L. Berg

CLIMAX, Minn. -- Virginia L. Berg, 69, Climax, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at home.

Virginia Vettern was born Aug. 17, 1929, the daughter of Milford and Enid (Leach) Vettern, in Climax. She attended school in Buxton, N.D., and high school in Climax. She married Alton Berg on June 29, 1946, in Crookston. They lived in Climax, where she worked for the Anderson/Larson Farms. Alton Berg died July 17, 1996.

She is survived by sons, Ronn, East Grand Forks, and Wayne (Pam), Climax; daughters, Cheryl (Mike) Beltz, West Fargo, and Eileen (Kelly) Smith, Summit, S.D.; nine grandchildren; two step grandchildren; a great-grandchild; sisters, Jeanne Johnson, Grand Forks, Diane Kotecki, Waukegan, Ill., Margaret Eisert, Climax, and Maxine (Rod) MacGregor, Zion, Ill.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter and her parents.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Climax Lutheran Church.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Skatvold Cemetery, Climax (Stennes, East Grand Forks).

George White Sr.

PONEMAH, Minn. -- George White Sr., 72, Ponemah, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis.

George "Ginebigoos" White was born May 4, 1926, the son of Peter and Vivian (Kingbird) White, in Ponemah, where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army from Aug. 1944, to Aug. 1946. He received two Bronze Stars. He married Mary Dickenson on Nov. 22, 1946. He worked as a logger, fisherman, transportation and ambulance driver for Comprehensive Health. Mary White died in 1991.

He is survived by sons, George Jr., Roger and Adrian, all of Ponemah; daughters, Donna Graves, Carol White, Georgette White and Diane White, all of Ponemah; 35 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack, Ponemah; and a sister, Flora White, Bemidji.

He was preceded in death by eight children; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Albert and Sam; and sisters, Agnes and Mildred White.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Ponemah Community Center.

Visitation: Will begin today and continue until the time of services in the community center.

Burial: Family burial grounds, Ponemah (Cease, Bemidji).

Russell T. Eck

GONVICK, Minn. -- Russell T. Eck, 81, Gonvick, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.

Russell T. Eck was born July 25, 1917, the son of Theodore and Emily Eck, in Gonvick, where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He lived and farmed in Pine Lake Township, Clearwater County, Minn. He worked for the Gonvick School, American Crystal Sugar, Gonvick Creamery and the City of Gonvick. He married Vivian Schmunk on March 6, 1948, in Gonvick.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Jennifer, Gonvick; sons, Gary (Joy), Gonvick, and Jim, Bemidji; six grandchildren; sisters, Ada Belle Sather, Wanda Drydahl, Helen Bakke, and Tippy Berg, all of Gonvick; and a brother, Robert, Gonvick.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Everett, Walter, Roger, Marvin and Manfield.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Samhold Lutheran Church, Gonvick.

Burial: Samhold Lutheran Cemetery.

Military Rites: Gonvick American Legion Post (Cease, Bagley, Minn.).

Leonard Schmit

GULLY, Minn. -- Leonard Schmit, 78, Gully, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at home.

Leonard Phillip Schmit was born Oct. 16, 1919, the son of Dominique and Anna (Bries) Schmit, in Trail, Minn., where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He married Tone Godtland on Nov. 25, 1947, in Plummer, Minn. They lived on the home farm until 1933, when they moved to Gully.

He is survived by his wife; children, Karen (Ordell) Langseth, and Roger, both of Gully, Lowell (Tonya) Schmit, Cat Spring, Texas, Penny (Kent) Smith, Warroad, Minn., Jerome (Nancy), Trail, and Patsy (Alfred) Broten, Park Rapids, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, Phillip (Mable), Trail.

He was preceded in death by sons, Larry and Milo; a brother, Joe; and sisters, Eva Olsen, Anna Agnes, Mary Busse and Catherine Paulson.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fosston.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Charles Catholic Cemetery, Trail (Carlin-Hoialmen, Fosston, Minn.).

Military Rites: Trail Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6426 and Gonvick (Minn.) American Legion Post #304.

Frances Triplett

HALSTAD, Minn. -- Frances Triplett, 96, Halstad, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, in Halstad Lutheran Memorial Home.

Frances Louella Henderson was born Nov. 24, 1901, the daughter of Oscar and Sadie (Larson) Henderson, in Halstad, where she attended school. She attended teacher training college in Valley City, N.D. She began teaching in 1921 in Wilton, N.D. She later taught in Enderlin, N.D. She married Oliver Melting on June 4, 1925. They lived in Fargo. In the mid-1940s, they moved to Hillsboro, N.D., where they owned and operated the Viking Hotel and Restaurant and Blue Bird Cafe. They later sold the hotel and restaurant. Oliver Melting died March 3, 1959. She received her bachelor of science degree from Mayville (N.D.) State College. She taught middle grades in Cummings and Caledonia, N.D., and high school in Argusville, N.D. She was principal in Arthur, N.D., before moving to Elk River, N.D., where she worked in remedial reading. In 1965, she was a summer reading consultant. In 1966, she retired and moved to St. Paul Park, Minn. She married Hartley Triplett. She lived in Woodbury, Minn. and in 1995 moved to Halstad Lutheran Memorial Home.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Melting, Anoka, Minn.; three granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Adeline Henderson, Halstad.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; a son, Oliver; brothers, Leland, Loren and Harry; and a sister, Edith.

Services: 9: 30 a.m. Monday, Halstad Lutheran Memorial Home.

Visitation: 9 a.m. until time of services.

Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Fargo (Fredrikson, Halstad)

Toni L. Leadens

WAUBUN, Minn. -- Toni L. Leadens, 43, Waubun, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, in Mahnomen (Minn.) Health Center Nursing Home.

Toni Maltby was born Dec. 12, 1954, the daughter of Robroy and Joyce (Cody) Maltby in Choteau, Mont., where she graduated from high school in 1973. She attended the University of Bozeman (Mont.), graduating in 1975, with an associate degree in accounting. She worked as an accountant for the hospital and lumber company in Great Falls, Mont., from 1975 to 1988. She moved to Edina, Minn., where she worked at the National Car Rental world headquarters. She married Patrick Leadens on Sept. 22, 1989, in Edina. They lived in Edina and Eden Prairie, Minn., before moving to Park Rapids, Minn., in 1994. She worked at the Hubbard County assessor's office. In 1997, they moved to Waubun, where she worked in the accounting department of the Shooting Star Casino, Mahnomen.

She is survived by her husband; stepchildren, Calla and Robert Leadens, both of Wilmar, Minn.; her parents, Pendroy, Mont.; a brother, Tom (Liz), Pendroy; a sister, Tracy Maltby, Missoula, Mont.; and grandparents, Arthur and Irene Sincock, St. Louis Park, Minn.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Werness Brothers Funeral Chapel, Minneapolis.

Burial: Private (Mattson, Mahnomen).

Neill 'Bo' Gamble

HALLOCK, Minn. -- Neill "Bo" Gamble, 86, Hallock, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, in Kittson Memorial Health Care Center, Hallock.

Neill Alexander Gamble was born May 3, 1912, the son of William and Lily (Griffith) Gamble, in St. Vincent, Minn. He moved to Hallock at age 16. He graduated from high school in Hallock in 1931. He married Clara Norberg on June 30, 1937, in Hallock. He worked for Northwestern Implement in Hallock and later worked for the Hallock school as a bus driver and custodian. He retired in 1974. During his retirement, he worked part-time for Kittson Auto and Implement. He entered the nursing home in 1996.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Donna (Nester) Kohut, Carman, Man.; a son, James (Jewell), Minneapolis; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, May Yeager, Bellevue, Iowa, and Jean Maloney, Jackson, Mich.; and a sister-in-law, Pauline Nordling Mullen, Seattle.

He was preceded in death by siblings, Allan, Louis, Kathleen, Wilhemina, Frances and Leslie.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday, St. John's Episcopal Church, Hallock.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock (Hughes, Hallock).

Leonard Ralph Stallock

STEPHEN, Minn. -- Leonard R. Stallock, 71, Stephen, died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.

Leonard Ralph Stallock was born Feb. 7, 1927, the son of Anzelm and Polly (Pietruszewski) Staloch, in Florian, Minn. He attended school in Florian and Karlstad, Minn. He married Eulalie Nelson on Jan. 25, 1951, in Greenbush, Minn. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1953 they moved to Stephen, where he worked as a mechanic for Halfmann Ford and Benson Construction. He later worked for Borowicz Construction Co.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Sheila (Tony) Salentine, Euclid, Minn., and Joy (Dan) Ostlund, Warroad, Minn.; a son, Mike, Fargo; four grandchildren; a brother, Conrad (Evelyn), Karlstad; and sisters, Lorraine (Henry) Bengtson, Karlstad, and Sharon (John) Moneta, Ham Lake, Minn.

He was preceded in death by brothers, James, Robert and Rudolph; and a sister, Delphine Borowicz.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, St. Stephen Catholic Church.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in the church.

Burial: St. Stephen Cemetery (Adamson-Austin, Stephen).

Military Rites: Stephen American Legion Post #390.
