Helen Steinmetz

MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- Helen Steinmetz, 80, Moorhead, formerly of Mahnomen, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, where she had lived since 1993.

Helen Luhman was born Oct. 11, 1918, the daughter of John and Lena (Zander) Luhman, in Dickinson, N.D., where she attended school. She moved with her family to Mahnomen. She married Wesley Steinmetz on Feb. 21, 1939, in Twin Valley, Minn. They lived in Mahnomen. They moved to a farm west of Mahnomen in 1945. Wesley Steinmetz died in 1969. She worked at Corner Drug and later at Pierce Floral. In 1989, she moved back into Mahnomen. She lived in St. Cloud, Minn., from 1991 to 1993.

She is survived by sons, Howard "Scoop" (Naomi), Mahnomen, Lloyd (Patty), Fargo, Terry (Peggy), West Fargo, and Todd, Gary, Minn.; daughters, Arlene (Daryl) Omlid, St. Cloud, Sharon (Bob) Jokumsen, Wahpeton, N.D., Linda (Bob) Sauve, East Grand Forks, and Pam (Todd) Johnson, Hazen, N.D.; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Elvera Moore, Forest Lake, Minn., Mildred Hoffman, Portland, Ore., and Vivin Gabbert, Dickinson.

She was preceded in death by three grandchildren; and four brothers.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, First Lutheran Church, Mahnomen.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Mattson Funeral Home, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Riverside Memorial Park, Mahnomen.

Clarence Carlson

McINTOSH, Minn. -- Clarence Carlson, 81, McIntosh, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in First Care Hospital, Fosston, Minn.

Clarence Edwin Carlson was born July 26, 1917, the son of Carl and Mary Carlson, in Winger, Minn. He attended country school. He married Marion Ous on Oct. 25, 1941. They lived south of McIntosh. He farmed, did carpentry work, worked for Federal Crop Insurance and the U.S. Agricultural Reporting Service.

He is survived by daughters, Sandra (David) Molsrte, Camarillo, Calif., Bonnie (James) Klein, Faribault, Minn, Sharon (Richard) Carlson, Plymoout, Minn., Rachel (Richard Grove) Carlson, Brooks, Minn., and Rebecca (Gary) Schommer, McIntosh; sons, Bruce (Charlotte), Anton, Texas, Steven (Devra), McIntosh, and Richard (Cathy), Loveland, Ohio; 23 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alice Knight.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph, Ruben, Walter and John; and a sister, Anne Hatten.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, McIntosh.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, McIntosh Centennial Community Center.

Burial: Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery, McIntosh (Carlin-Hoialmen, McIntosh).

Arnold T. 'Sox' Severtson

MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- Arnold T. "Sox" Severtson, 96, Mahnomen, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Arnold Theodore Severtson was born Sept. 15, 1902 the son of Swan and Anna (Bakke) Severtson, in Pelican Rapids, Minn. He moved with his family to Mahnomen, where he attended school. He worked for area farmers. He also worked in a logging camp near Mahnomen. He served in the U.S. Army. He returned to Mahnomen, where he worked in road maintenance for the Minnesota Department of Transportation. He married Marion Brabec on July 1, 1933, in Bemidji. They lived in Mahnomen. Marion Severtson died in 1963.

He is survived by a nephew; and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Circles of Faith United Church of Christ, Waubun, Minn.

Visitation: Noon until the time of service in the church.

Burial: Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery, Mahnomen (Burnside, Mahnomen).

Lyle Roue

FOSSTON, Minn. -- Lyle Roue, 83, Fosston, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, in Veteran's Administration Hospital, Fargo.

Lyle Archie Roue was born June 7, 1915, the son of Archie and Ellen (Blomdahl) Roue, in Fosston, where he graduated from high school in 1933. He married Martha Mickelson on Feb. 8, 1936, in Bagley, Minn. They lived in Fosston. He joined the U.S. military as an M.P. for one year. In 1950, they moved to Thief River Falls, where he worked for Ace Hardware and Holsum Bread Co. In 1960, they returned to Fosston, where he opened R & B Bowling Ally with his brother-in-law, Harris Broin. He then worked for Sunshine Biscuit Co., and later Polk County Highway Department, where he was a truck driver and heavy equipment operator until retiring.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Janice (Jim) Baumgartner, Spring Valley, Wis., Julie McDonald, Burnsville, Minn., and Debra (Kevin) Ryan, Chaska, Minn.; sons, David, Cambridge, Minn., and Joel (Chrissy), Fosston; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Clifford (Eunice), Fosston.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Mecca LaVoi and Ethelyn Hamann; and a half sister, Ercel Ashlock.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Fosston Baptist Church.

Visitation: A prayer service will be held at 4: 30 p.m. today, with visitation to follow from 5 to 7 p.m., Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, Fosston, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Queen Cemetery, Fosston.

Ronald Hull

WARROAD, Minn. -- Ronald Hull, 61, Warroad, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, at home.

Ronald Richard Hull was born May 20, 1936, the son of Clarence and Virginai (McCaulley) Hull, in Margie, Minn. He attended school in Big Falls, Minn., and Little Fork, Minn. He was a professional ice skater with the Holiday on Ice and the Ice Capades for several years. He joined the U.S. Army for four years. He went back to skating for a few years, before working for Ford Motor Co., Minneapolis. He owned Richfield Realty for many years. He also owned and operated Big Falls Motel from 1975 to 1988. He moved to Williams, Minn., to take care of his parents. He moved to Warroad, in 1986 and was working for Marvin Windows and Doors.

He is survived by his father, Williams; a sister, Betty (Harold) Unger, Grand Rapids, Minn., and a brother, Earl, Williams.

He was preceded in death by his mother and a brother, Norman.

Services: Private graveside services will be held in Hawaii at a later date (Helgeson, Warroad).

Joseph Mitzel, 74, Esmond, N.D., died Thursday in Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake (Nelson, Esmond).

Clara Johnson

FOSSTON, Minn. -- Clara Johnson, 96, Columbia Heights, Minn., formerly of Fosston, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, in Crestview Lutheran Home, Columbia Heights.

Clara Lomen was born April 25, 1902, the daughter of Oli and Sigurd Lomen, in Fosston. She grew up in Lengby, Minn., where she attended school. She married John Johnson in 1928, in Fosston. They lived near Fosston, where they farmed. She worked at Fosston Nursing Home. John Johnson died in 1963. She married Henry Johnson. They lived in Brandon, Minn., until he passed away and she returned to Fosston. She lived in Municipal Nursing Home, Fosston, The Sunset Board and Lodging, Bagley, Minn., and most recently Bywood East Health Care, Minneapolis, and Crestview Nursing Home, Columbia Heights.

She is survived by a son, Jerald (Kathy), New Brighton, Minn.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Clinton; a granddaughter; two sisters; and four brothers.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Kingo Lutheran Church, Fosston.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Church cemetery.

Barney O. Anderson

GREENBUSH, Minn. -- Barney O. Anderson, 90, Apache Junction, Ariz., formerly of Greenbush, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, at home.

Barney O. Anderson was born April 16, 1908, the son of Andrew and Tone (Jergenson) Anderson, in Greenbush. He grew up and attended school in Deer Township, Roseau County, Minn. He married Mabel Myran on Nov. 2, 1931, in Roseau. They farmed in Dewey Township, Roseau County until 1975, when they moved to Enumclaw, Wash. In 1983, they moved to Apache Junction. He spent summers in Greenbush.

He is survived by his wife, Karlstad (Minn.) Nursing Home; sons, Rudee (Ruth), Greenbush, Waldo (Ruth), Edina, Minn., Duane (Joan), Yakima, Wash., and Gerald (Betty), Bozeman, Mont.; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Joe (Mildred), Greenbush.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Arthur, Leonard and Hildor; and sisters, Thelma Carrico, Agnes Hanson, Sylvia Copeland and Volberg Patitucci.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Lind Township, Roseau County.

Visitation: After 5 p.m. today, Gieseke Funeral Chapel, Greenbush, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Greenbush.

Edmund 'Ed' 'Eddie' Mattison

OKLEE, Minn. -- Edmund "Ed" "Eddie" Mattison, 56, Oklee, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at home.

Edmund William Mattison was born May 20, 1942, the son of William and Martha (Lee) Mattison, in Baudette, Minn. He graduated from Oklee Public School. He joined the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1965. He married Mary Anne Meland. They lived in Chicago, Minneapolis and Plummer. He lived in Silver Lake, Wis., until returning to Oklee.

He is survived by a daughter, Kristina Forsberg, Goodridge, Minn.; sons, Eric, Moorhead, and Eron, Plummer, Minn.; three granddaughters; brothers, Wayne Walhaug, Oklee, and Steve (Tootie) Mattison and David Mattison, both of Minneapolis; and sisters, Sharon (Warren) Larson, Shirley (Gary) Rux and Carol (Richard) Clark, all of Thief River Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Petterson Funeral Home, Oklee.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour before services all in the funeral home.

Burial: Finnish Cemetery, Plummer.

Military Rites: Plummer American Legion Post.

Keith Nordling

ALVARADO, Minn. -- Keith Nordling, 44, Beaufort, S.C., formerly of Alvarado, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Keith Marvin Nordling was born Oct. 16, 1954, the son of Lloyd and Betty (Pilgren) Nordling, in Warren, Minn. He grew up in Alvarado, where he graduated from high school. He worked as a carpenter. For the past six years he had lived in Alvarado and Beaufort. He had been in Beaufort for the past year.

He is survived by children, Livia Kay (Matthew) Sands, Oslo, Minn., and Adam, Alvarado; his parents, Park Rapids, Minn.; a brother, Peter (Diane), Park Rapids; and a sister-in-law, Deanna Nordling, Fargo.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, New Hope Lutheran Church, Alvarado.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Oaklawn Cemetery, Alvarado.

Lois L. Johnson

ROSEAU, Minn. -- Lois L. Johnson, 85, Roseau, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at home.

Lois Leila Stordahl was born June 14, 1913, the daughter of Louis and Luella (Johnson) Stordahl, in Gatzke, Minn., where she attended school. She married Martin Johnson on June 14, 1933, in Gatzke. They farmed in the Gatzke area until 1943, when they bought a farm near Roseau. She taught rural schools in Marshall County and Roseau County, Minn. She worked at Town and Country Grocery, Helgeson Furniture and Funeral Home, Robert Nelson Accounting and Hayes Accounting. In 1979, they sold the farm and moved into Roseau. Martin Johnson died in 1981.

She is survived by daughters, Audrey (Dick) Jackson and Ardith (Ray) Vatnsdal, both of Roseau; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Arthur (Ina), Thief River Falls, and Clayton (Grace), Roseau.

She was preceded in death by a grandson.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, Moe Lutheran Church, Roseau.

Visitation: Noon to 8 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Roseau.

Burial: Hope Cemetery, Roseau.
