Jean M. Johnson

STEPHEN, Minn. -- Jean M. Johnson, 76, formerly of Stephen, died Oct. 30, 1998, in Palomar Hospital, Escondido, Calif.

Jean M. Halliday was born Jan. 30, 1922, the daughter of Vernon and Ida Halliday, Fosston, Minn. She attended Northwest Agricultural School, Crookston, and Business College, Grand Forks. She married Herbert Johnson on Dec. 20, 1942. They farmed in Stephen from 1946 to 1984. They continued to live on the farm and spend winters in Escondido.

She is survived by her husband; sons, Douglas (Debbie), Key Largo, Fla., and Boyd (Susan), Escondido; daughters, Diane (Gary) Ray, Ramona, Calif., and Shirley Coleman, Stephen; eight grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Jean), Babbitt, Minn.; and sisters, Betty (Andy) Parsell, Sacramento, Calif., and Ellen Halliday and Molly (Sherm) Bliss, both of San Diego.

Services: Were held in Escondido.

Marvin Svobodny

TWIN VALLEY, Minn. -- Marvin Svobodny, 80, Twin Valley, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, in Dakota Heartland Hospital, Fargo.

Marvin Svobodny was born April 14, 1918, the son of Joe and Laura (McLane) Svobodny, in Raymond, Minn. He moved with his family to Faith, Minn., where he grew up and attended school. He farmed with his parents. He married Lorraine Krebsbach on Jan. 15, 1946, in Beaulieu, Minn. They lived and farmed on the family farm until moving into Twin Valley in 1990.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Robert (Gaylene), Twin Valley, and David (Becky), Park River, N.D.; daughters, Carolyn (Jerald) Minnie, and Diane (Kevin) Ruud, both of Twin Valley; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and sisters, Florence Sanden, Mahnomen, and Ruby (Joe) Klinkhammer, Staples, Minn.

He was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence "Buddy"; a granddaughter; and a brother, Lawrence.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, St. William Catholic Church, Twin Valley.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Anderson Funeral Home, Twin Valley.

Burial: St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Mahnomen.

Ruth M. Elseth

WARREN, Minn. -- Ruth M. Elseth, 86, Warren, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in Marshall Manor Good Samaritan Center, Warren, where she had been a resident for six weeks.

Ruth Mabel Stanghelle was born March 14, 1912, the daughter of Ole and Emma (Pearson) Stanghelle. She attended school in Alma Township, Marshall County, Minn., and high school in Argyle, Minn., and Fargo. She received her teacher's training in Moorhead and taught rural schools. She married Willard Elseth on July 17, 1937, in Newfolden, Minn. They made their home in Warren, Alma, and Thief River Falls.

She is survived by her husband; children, Delores (Bob) Ricker, Chicago, Bob (Mavis) and Elden (Roxann Tink), both of Warren, Howard (Judy), of Texas, and Barbara (Gren) Weis., Toronto, Ont.; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, June Stanghill, East Helena, Mont., and Ruby Stanghelle, Warren.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter; sisters, Agnes Hunstad, Ethel Welin and Enda Stanghelle; and brothers, Albin, Ragner, Elmer and Walter.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, Evangelical Covenant Church, Warren.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Quanrud-DuBore Funeral Home, Warren, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Alma Lutheran Cemetery, Argyle. Memorials are suggested to Evangelical Covenant Church.

Elmer Benson

WANNASKA, Minn. -- Elmer Benson, 95, Wannaska, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in Sheltering Oaks Nursing Home, Roseau, Minn.

Elmer Benson was born Oct. 17, 1903, the son of John and Maria (Bengtson) Benson, in Wannaska, where he attended school. He worked on threshing crews in North Dakota. He married Mable Torfin on Dec. 3, 1926, in Wannaska. They purchased the family farm in 1947. In 1965, they sold the farm to their daughter. They moved into Wannaska, where he worked for Polaris Industries. Mable Benson died June 11, 1970.

He is survived by a son, Robert (Ida Marie), Wannamingo, Minn.; a daughter, Marie (Layton) Oslund, Wannaska; eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers, John, Emil, Hildur, George, Henry and Melvin; and sisters, Ellen Peterson, Alma Ulvin, Hilda Bengtson and Selma Ingebrigtson.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Riverside Lutheran Church, Wannaska.

Visitation: Noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Roseau, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Palmville Cemetery, Wannaska.

Bertha Berglund

CLEARBROOK, Minn. -- Bertha Berglund, 95, Clearbrook, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, in Good Samaritan Center, Clearbrook.

Bertha Evenson was born June 24, 1903, the daughter of Peter and Thea (Dolden) Evenson, in Superior, Wis. She lived in Cooperstown, N.D., and moved to Fosston, Minn. She married William Berglund in March 1924. They moved to Duluth, and to Clearbrook in 1934. William Berglund died in 1980. She moved to the Good Samaritan Center in 1995.

She is survived by sons, Robert (Marie), White Bear Lake, Minn., and Philip, Clearbrook, three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward, Duluth; and a sister, Ruth Johnson, Brooklyn Center, Minn.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Peter; and sisters, Agnes Berglund and Jennie Berntson.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Rosehill Cemetery, Fosston.

Edith Boen

ROSEAU, Minn. -- Edith Boen, 93, Roseau, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at Sheltering Oaks Nursing Home, Roseau, where she had lived for the past eight years.

Edith Donna Dahl was born July 23, 1905, the daughter of Doffen and Alfreda (Eklund) Dahl, in Roseau County. She grew up and attended school in the Falun, Minn., area. She married Albert Boen on June 15, 1927, in Roseau. They farmed in Falun Township and in the early 1950s, they moved into Roseau. She worked as a nurse's aide at Sheltering Oaks Nursing Home. Albert Boen died Sept. 1, 1980.

She is survived by sisters, Myrtle (Raymond) Pearson and Harriet Naslund, both of Roseau; and brothers, Albin and Russell (Rose), both of Roseau.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Bethel Mission Covenant Church, Roseau.

Visitation: Noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service in Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Roseau, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Falun Cemetery, Roseau.

Wallace Champagne

BROOKS, Minn. -- Wallace Champagne, 88, Red Wing, Minn., formerly of Brooks, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at High Park Nursing Home, Red Wing.

Wallace Champagne was born Oct. 7, 1910, the son of Max and Annie (Shank) Champagne, in Brooks, where he attended school. He married Mae Perreault on Nov. 26, 1930, in Brooks. They lived and farmed in the Brooks area before moving to South Milwaukee, Wis., where he worked at Bueyrus Erie. He later returned to Brooks, where he owned and managed the liquor store.

He is survived by his children, Euella (Tony) Galasso, Florence, Ore., Doreen (Lory) Bryant, Riverside, Calif., Bernard (Grace), Snow Hill, N.C., Bonita (Lawrence) Langer, Hager City, Wis., Arnold, San Francisco, and Betty (Thomas) Yoder, Wichita Falls, Texas; his ex-wife, Mae Champagne, Snow Hill; 21 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters and two infant siblings.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Brooks.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Petterson Funeral Home, Red Lake Falls, Minn., and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Eunice A. Rice

Eunice A. Rice, 90, Bloomington, Minn., formerly of Grand Forks, SD died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, in Friendship Village, Bloomington.

She is survived by a son, Edwin; two grandsons; and a daughter-in-law, Jean Rice.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Rice.

Services: Private services will be held.

Burial: Memorial Park, Grand Forks (Washburn-McReavy Strobeck Johnson Chapel, Hopkins, Minn.

Russell C. Hanson

WINGER, Minn. -- Russell C. Hanson, 80, Winger, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, in FirstCare Hospital, Fosston, Minn.

Russell C. Hanson was born June 11, 1918, the son of Edward and Susie (Hogenson) Hanson, in Garden Township, Polk County, Minn. He attended school in Garden Township and graduated from high school in Mahnomen, Minn., in 1937. He worked on several farms in the Winger area. He married Edith Grunhovd on May 22, 1943, in Rindal, where they farmed. He hauled milk for Rindal Creamery and was a technician for the American Breeders Association. In the mid-1940s, they moved to Rindal, where he managed the Rindal Co-op General Store. In the early 1960s, he began farming with his brother, LeRoy. They returned to the farm in 1965.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Glenn (Karen), Mahnomen, and Brad, Winger; daughters, Barb (James) Strehlow, Hamel, Minn., Bev (Ron) Rohweller, Hawley, Minn., and Luanne (Ritch) Mjelde, Marshall, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter (Irene), Crookston; and a sister-in-law, Mabel Hanson, Fertile.

He was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren; brothers, Elmer and LeRoy; and a sister, Verna Johnson.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Faaberg Lutheran Church, Rindal.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in the church.

Burial: Faaberg Lutheran Church Cemetery (Mattson, Mahnomen, Minn.).

Myrl Moland

FERTILE, Minn. -- Myrl Moland, 81, Fertile, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in Riverview Hospital, Crookston.

Myrl Adeline Berhow was born March 30, 1917, the daughter of Emmett and Olive (Alm) Berhow, in Brantwood, Wis. She moved with her family to Garfield Township, Polk County, Minn., where she attended school. She worked for area farmers as domestic help. She married Harold Moland on Oct. 9, 1937, in Maple Bay, Minn. They lived and farmed in Godfrey Township, Polk County, from 1944 to 1984, when they moved to Fertile. Harold Moland died in October 1986.

She is survived by a daughter, Marjorie (Donald) Wendt, Zumbrota, Minn.; sons, Harvey (Nancy), Big Fork, Minn., Carl (Connie), Fertile, and Kenneth (Barbara), Kirkland, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and brothers, Cyril "Chuck" (DeVonne) and Richard (Yvonne), both of Fertile.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane; a son-in-law, Everett Flom; a sister, Verna Rasmussen; and brothers, Stanley, Robert, Donald and Virgil.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Maple Bay (Minn.) Free Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 6: 30 p.m. prayer service, Erikson-Vik Funeral Home, Fertile.

Burial: Maple Bay Free Lutheran Cemetery.

John B. Field

STEPHEN, Minn. -- John B. Field, 78, Stephen, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.

John B. Field was born May 17, 1920, the son of J. Ward and Ethel (Lyons) Field, in Donnelly Township, Marshall County, Minn. He graduated from high school in Stephen in 1938. He attended Globe Business College, St. Paul. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He lived in California. He married Betty Murray on Nov. 1, 1945. He returned to Minnesota, where he began farming.

He is survived by his wife; a son, William (Donna), Stephen; daughters, Sandra (Mark) Rasmussen, Moorhead, Anita (Wayne) Knoll, Stephen, and Myrna (Howard) Olson, Fort Worth, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and brothers, Charles (Leatrice), and Leonard (Virginia), both of Stephen.

He was preceded in death by a grandson; and a sister, Hazel Welsh.

Services: 10 a.m. today, First Presbyterian Church, Stephen.

Burial: Stephen Cemetery (Adamson-Austin, Stephen).
