Herbert P. Reese

GRACETON, Minn. -- Herbert P. Reese, 88, Graceton, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at Lakewood Health Center, Baudette.

Herbert Paul Stebbins Reese was born July 21, 1910, the son of Edward and Mary (Monro) Reese, in Blooming Valley Township, Roseau County, Minn. In 1915, he moved with his family to Baudette, where he lived until 1925, when he moved to Graceton, where he worked as a section hand for the Canadian National Railroad. He married Harriet Sparks on May 4, 1939, in Warroad, Minn. They lived near Graceton. He retired in 1942. In 1960, he became a toll-taker in Baudette, until 1989. He also farmed until retiring in 1995.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Paul (Loretta), Big Falls, Minn., and Brian (Nhung), Flint, Mich.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Earl (Florence), Runnells, Iowa; and a sister, Violet (Howard) Dix, Graceton.

He was preceded in death by a grandson; brothers, Allen, Daniel and Raymond; and sisters, Florence Hopkins, Irene Hoyt and Marie Ganyo.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. today, First Congregational Church-United Church Of Christ, Williams, Minn.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Graceton Cemetery (Helgeson, Baudette).

Mayhlon Charles

CLEARBROOK, Minn. -- Mayhlon Charles, 73, Clearbrook, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, in Clearwater Memorial Hospital, Bagley, Minn.

Mayhlon Charles was born June 4, 1925, the son of Elmer and Myrtle (Jacobson) Charles, in Sinclair Township, Clearwater County, Minn. He attended school in Neving and Westby, N.D. He joined the U.S. Army in October 1943. He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and EAME ribbon. He was sent back to the states to recover at an army hospital at Camp Carson, Colo. He was discharged in October 1945. He married Beverly Buness on Aug. 11, 1951, in Bagley.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Mitchell (Rhonda), Bordulac, N.D.; Chris (Shirley), Carrington, N.D., Brian (Barb), Arcadia, Neb., and Scott (Leslie), Hudson, Wis.; daughters, Sue (Randy S.) Olson, Thief River Falls, Merry and Cheryl, both of Bemidji, and Kim, Roseau, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Angela Nelson, International Falls, Minn.; and a brother, Murray, Bagley.

He was preceded in death by a son, Shawn; brothers, Eugene, June and Moreland; and a sister, Orva Postier.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Clearbrook, Minn.

Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. today, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley.

Burial: Westby Cemetery, Clearbrook.

Juel Aune

GATZKE, Minn. -- Juel Aune, 76, Gatzke, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.

Juel Marvin Aune was born Nov. 16, 1921, the son of John and Gusta (Lian) Aune, in Gatzke, where he attended school. He joined the U.S. Army on Oct. 6, 1942. He was discharged on Oct. 23, 1945, at Camp McCoy, Wis. He married Hazel Byklum on June 5, 1948, in Grygla, Minn. They went into partnership with his brother, Glen, and farmed the homestead in Gatzke. He worked for Merickel Lumber, Wadena, Minn., Blacktop Construction, St. Louis Park, Minn., and Arctic Enterprises, Thief River Falls.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Jaylene and Carole, both of Minneapolis, Nadine (Ed) Wold, Spring Lake Park, Minn., and Sharon (Greg) Harris, Thief River Falls; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; brothers, Glen and Laverne (Lila); and sisters, Esther O'Brien, Mildred (Fred) Paulson and Marvel (Clayton) Carlson.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Olaf; a sister-in-law, Paula Aune; and brothers-in-law, George O'Brien and Jack Huffman.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, United Lutheran Church, Gatzke.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Moose River Cemetery, Rollis Township, Marshall County, Minn.

Kenneth H. Redland

ADA, Minn. -- Kenneth H. Redland, 72, Ada, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Kenneth Herman Redland was born July 13, 1926, the son of Halvor and Octavia (Larson) Redland, in Crookston. They lived in Hendrum, Minn. At age 3, he moved to Shelly, Minn., and later to Ada, where he attended school. He worked for the Ada Bakery. He served in the U.S. Army from Oct. 14, 1944, to Dec. 12, 1946. He returned to Ada. He began working with his brother, LeRoy, at the Pantry Cafe. He married Irene Muehlbeier on Oct. 7, 1950, in Minneapolis. They lived in Ada, where he worked for Simpson Motors selling cars. From the early 1960s to 1973, he drove a school bus for the Ada School District. In 1976, he formed a partnership with Norman Berby, and formed Simpson Motors. He sold his share of the business in 1989 and continued selling cars.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Kent (Pamela), Bemidji; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Grace Lutheran Church, Ada.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 6: 30 p.m. prayer service, Fredrikson Funeral Home, Ada.

Burial: Ada Municipal Cemetery.

Ervin Harms

MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- Ervin Harms, 81, Mahnomen, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, in Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.

Ervin Harms was born May 4, 1917, the son of John and Emma (Ramstorf) Harms, in Ada, Minn., where he attended school. He worked on area farms in Ada. He married Ella Bjorge on July 10, 1938, in Ada. They lived in Gary, Minn., before moving to Grand Forks. They lived in Fertile, Cass Lake and Beaulieu, Minn., before moving to Mahnomen in 1944. He worked for the Forestry Department in their lookout towers, in Cass Lake, and at Schermerhorn farms, Beaulieu. In the early 1950s, he began working for Palmer Nelson Construction, Mahnomen, helping to construct the Mahnomen County Village Hospital. In 1966, he started his own construction business. He retired in the early 1980s. He entered the nursing home in August 1998. Ella Harms died May 22, 1998.

He is survived by sons, Dick (Donna), Francis Creek, Wis., Duane (Shirley), Bemidji, and James (Sandy) and Ken (Carol), both of Fargo; daughters, Beverly (Lonney) Rolland, Hawley, Minn., Delayne (Harlan) Ekeberg, Fosston, Minn., Mavis (Rick) Nystad, Gary, Minn., and Marsha (Bill) Winter, Mahnomen; 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brothers, Helmer (Helen), Memphis, Tenn., and Leland (Marge), Des Moines, Iowa; and a sister, Gloria Anne (Art) Spaeth, Mahnomen.

He was preceded in death by a son; two infant daughters; and two brothers.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Circles of Faith United Church of Christ, Waubun, Minn.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen.

Burial: Ada City Cemetery.

Verna A. Nichols

BAUDETTE, Minn. -- Verna A. Nichols, 70, Baudette, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, in Lakewood Health Center, Baudette.

Verna Alvera Johnson was born May 2, 1928, the daughter of Oscar and Marie (Bredeson) Johnson, in Wabanica Township, Lake of the Wood County, Baudette, where she attended school. She worked for Agnes' Cafe, Baudette, until moving to Oregon in 1945. She married Elziar Nicholas on June 8, 1946, in Roseburg, Ore. In 1947, they returned to Baudette. She managed one of the two Baudette Motels in East Baudette until it closed, she later worked at the West Baudette Motel. She worked for Country House Steakhouse and Solvay Laboratory, both of Baudette in 1984. She retired in 1995. Elziar Nichols died in 1979.

She is survived by a daughter, LaRae (James) Devault, Baudette; sons, Loren and Lonnie (Deborah), both of Baudette; a daughter-in-law, Linda Nichols, Summerville, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Lillian Brown, Marlene (Oscar) Maus and Merlyce (Gerald) Gubbels, all of Baudette.

She was preceded in death by a son, LeRoy; a grandson; and a sister, Viola Lyons.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, First Lutheran Church, Baudette.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Elm Park Cemetery, Baudette (Helgeson, Baudette).

Ed Dehart

GUTHRIE, Minn. -- Ed Dehart, 87, Guthrie, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at home.

Lorin Edward Dehart was born July 12, 1911, the son of William Lorin and Margaret Mae (Bey) Dehart, in Fair Haven, Minn. He lived in several places including International Falls, Minn., and Pueblo, Colo., where he attended school. In 1925, he moved to Guthrie, where he attended school. He moved to Monticello, Minn., and worked as a farm hand. He returned to Guthrie. He married Lilly Swanson on June 23, 1937, in Walker, Minn. They operated a dairy farm until retiring in 1975.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Darlene (Curt) Christianson, Bemidji, and Diane (LeRoy) Morris, Guthrie; sons, Rodney (Kathy), International Falls, and Larry (Claudia), Pleasant Hill, Calif.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Margaret "Dolly" McLeod, Fridley, Minn., and Beth (Charles) Hermann, Mounds View, Minn.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Thomas and Raymond.

Services: 1: 30 p.m. Saturday, United Methodist Church, Bemidji.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Guthrie Cemetery (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).

Darrell Nesteby

GREENBUSH, Minn. -- Darrell Nesteby, 45, Greenbush, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, in Dakota Heartland Hospital, Fargo.

Darrell Ernest Nesteby was born Jan. 31, 1953, the son of Ernest and Elaine (Haugtvedt) Nesteby, in Greenbush, where he graduated from high school in 1971. He graduated from St. Cloud (Minn.) Vo-Tech College in 1974 as a journeyman electrician and worked for Lieberg Electric, Greenbush, and Marvin Windows, Warroad, Minn. He became blind at age 25 and attended Lighthouse for the Blind, Duluth.

He is survived by his mother, Greenbush; a brother, Larry (Val), Greenbush; and a sister, Linda (Lloyd) Bush, Harwood, N.D.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Bethel Lutheran Church, Greenbush.

Visitation: After 5 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Gieseke Funeral Chapel, Greenbush, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bethel Lutheran Cemetery.

Vera G. Cole

WILLIAMS, Minn. -- Vera G. Cole, 78, Williams, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, in Lakewood Care Center, Baudette, Minn.

Vera Georgette Boomgaarden was born June 22, 1920, the daughter of Albert and Ella (Blum) Boomgaarden, in Pipestone, Minn. She moved with her family to Pitt, Minn. She attended school in Pitt and graduated from high school in Baudette in 1938. She attended Bemidji State Teachers College and received a Techer Certification. She taught in Shevlin and Hacket, Minn. In 1942 she moved to Alameda, Calif., where she worked for the Alameda Naval Air Station. She married Vern Boomgaarden on Oct. 2, 1943, in Reno, Nev. In 1949 they moved to Lake of the Woods County, Minn. She taught school in Williams until 1963 and in Warraod, Minn., unil 1973. She returned to Bemidji State Teachers College and earned her bachelors degree in education in 1963 and her master's degree in Speical Education in 1969. She retired from teaching in 1973 and help on the farm. They retired from farming in the 1980's and began a woodworking business.

She is survived by a son, Larry (Nancy), Bemidji; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Albert (Roscille), Pitt, Marvin (Lorine), Corpus Christi, Texas, DeWayne (Ione), International Falls, Minn., Jacob (Clarice), Clearbrook, Minn., and Steven (Janet), Rosemount, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Lois Boomgaarden, Bloomington, Minn.

She was preceded in death by a son, James; and brothers, Leon and Eldon.

Services: at Bethany Lutheran Church, Williams.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Pine Hille Cemetery, Williams (Helgeson, Baudette).

Rose Thibert

RED LAKE FALLS, Minn. -- Rose Thibert, 84, Red Lake Falls, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, in Hillcrest Nursing Home, Red Lake Falls, where she had lived since Aug. 11, 1995.

Rose Mary Danduran was born Dec. 22, 1914, the daughter of Edmund and Louisa (Lachapelle) Danduran, in Terrebonne, Minn. She married Hank Thibert on Feb. 9, 1932, in Terrebonne. She worked as a seamstress for Alma, later called Detroiter Mobile Homes. She also worked at St. Joseph Parish. Hank Thibert died Dec. 12, 1958.

She is survived by children, Dick (Karen), Everett, Wash., Chuck (Eli), Marysville, Wash., and Mary Reitmeier, Crookston; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Louise Fournier, Selah, Wash.

She was preceded in death by a son, Herman; sisters, Mary, Anna and Pearl; and brothers, Edward, Harvey, Homer, Oscar, Leon and Armand.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Red Lake Falls.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Petterson Funeral Home, Red Lake Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Anthony Catholic Church Cemetery, Terrebonne.

Patricia 'Pat' Lhotka

WAUBUN, Minn. -- Patricia "Pat" Lhotka, 64, Waubun, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Patricia Bregel was born July 20, 1934, the daughter of Larry and Eleanor (Johnson) Bregel, in Mahnomen, Minn., where she attended school. She married Kenneth Lhotka on Feb. 3, 1951, in Mahnomen. They lived in Grand Forks before returning to Mahnomen. They lived in Oregon from 1952 to 1956, when they returned to Mahnomen. In 1960, they moved to Grand Portage, Minn., where she worked at Ryden's Resort from 1964 until moving in 1974 to Waubun. She worked as an aide and a library assistant at Waubun High School from 1976 until retiring in 1996. They spent winters in Chandler, Ariz.

She is survived by her husband; sons, Duane, Ada, Minn., Doug (Darlene), Puyallup, Wash., Frank "Steve" (Janet), Larry (Julie) and Kenny (Kathy), all of Waubun, and Ron, Vincennes, Ind.; daughters, Peggy (Jeff) Germain, Thunder Bay, Ont., Karen (Mort) Montazeri, Fillmore, Calif., Carol Hoban, Fergus Falls, Minn., and Lynn (Byron) Omang, Waubun; 30 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Maurice (Sue), Auburn, Wash., and Larry (Brenda), Puyallup; and sisters, Paulette (Kenneth Gay) Bregel, Sutherlin, Ore., and Anita (Mike) Mault, Coos Bay, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson; and a sister, Jackie Hallbach.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, St. Ann's Catholic Church, Waubun.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services, all in the church.

Burial: St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery (Mattson, Mahnomen).
