Martha Schwalen

BAUDETTE, Minn. -- Martha Schwalen, 97, Baudette, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in Lakewood Care Center, Baudette, where she had lived since December.

Martha Elizabeth Parker was born Feb. 22, 1901, the daughter of James and Della (Harter) Parker, in Kosciusko County, Ind. In 1915, they moved to Wheaton, Minn., and then moved to a farm in Lake of the Woods County, Minn. She married Henry Schwalen in 1922. They moved to Carp, Minn., where they lived until 1934. Henry Schwalen died in 1958. She had lived in Fergus Falls, Minn., and Anoka, Minn., and later in New Richmond, Wis. In the early 1970s, she returned to her parents' farm near Pitt, Minn., where she lived until moving to Baudette.

She is survived by a son, James (Ruth), Roberts, Wis.

She was preceded in death by a son, Clifford; and brothers, Allen and Roy.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Baudette.

Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.

Burial: Elm Park Cemetery, Baudette.

Arnold O. Salveson

ADA, Minn. -- Arnold O. Salveson, 78, Ada, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, in Bridges Medical Center, Ada.

Arnold O. Salveson was born March 28, 1920, the son of Salvy and Emma (Heskkestad) Salveson, in Halstad, Minn., where he attended school. He worked for area farmers and traveled the country working in Civilian Conservation Corps camps. He served with the U.S. Army from November 1942 to November 1945. He also did construction work in the Norman County, Minn., area. He married Audrey Bak on Oct. 23, 1958, in Webster, S.D. They lived in Ada. He worked as a mechanic until retiring in 1985.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Jeffrey, Fargo; daughters, Pamela (Daniel) Elliott, Minneapolis, and Laurie Salveson, Knoxville, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and a sister, Amanda Branden, Seattle.

He was preceded in death by a son, David; brothers, Nils, Sherman, Ernest and Irwin; and sisters, Stella, and an infant Stella.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Grace Lutheran Church, Ada.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 5 p.m. prayer service, Fredrikson Funeral Home, Ada, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Ada Municipal Cemetery.

John P. Burkel

GREENBUSH, Minn. -- John P. Burkel, 81, Greenbush, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, in Greenbush Nursing Home, where he had lived for the past three years.

John Peter Burkel was born April 28, 1917, the son of Peter and Rose (Kulas) Burkel, in Greenbush, where he attended school. He married Isabelle Hedin on Nov. 8, 1939, in Greenbush. They farmed and raised turkeys south of Greenbush. Isabelle Burkel died Dec. 23, 1996.

He is survived by sons, David (Dinah), Park Rapids, Minn., and Keith (Janet), Greenbush; daughters, Irene (Larry) Ness, Roseau, Minn., and Kathy (Jeff) Vacura, Thief River Falls; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; brothers, George, Thief River Falls, Matt (Helen), Badger, Minn., and Tony (Pauline), San Juan, Texas; and sisters, Elizabeth (Roy) Schaller and Susie Schires, both of Greenbush.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Peter and Barney; and a grandson.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Greenbush.

Visitation: After 6 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Blessed Sacrament Cemetery (Gieseke, Greenbush).

Delphy Loeslie

WARREN, Minn. -- Delphy Loeslie, 77, Warren, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, in Good Samaritan Center, Warren.

Delphy Ann Sloan was born March 2, 1921, the daughter of Samuel and Susie (Drake) Sloan, in Foldahl Township, Marshall County, Minn. She graduated from high school in Warren, Minn. She married Herbert Loeslie on Jan. 9, 1938, in Radium, Minn. They lived in Radium until moving to Warren, where they farmed. They moved into Warren in 1949. Herbert Loeslie died May 8, 1976.

She is survived by children, Michal (J. Wendell) Sands, Alvarado, Minn., and Donavon (Glorianne), Ronald (Carol) and Scott (Becky), all of Warren; 17 grandchildren; sisters, Vivian Henley, Fort Myers, Fla., Mattie Schussman, Kalamazoo, Mich., and Dorothy Ranstrom, Elbow Lake, Minn.

She was preceded in death by daughters, Linda Louise McGregor and Connie Rae Loeslie; sisters, Fay Robinson, Mayme Pothuisje and Geraldine James; and brothers, Purl and Perry.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, Zion Lutheran Church, Warren.

Visitation: After 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Quanrud-DuBore Funeral Home, Warren, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Warren.

Roger 'Bing' Melander

STACY, Minn. -- Roger "Bing" Melander, 62, Stacy, formerly of Gonvick, Minn., died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, in Hillcrest Nursing Home, Wayzata, Minn., where he had lived since January.

Roger Melander was born Aug. 20, 1937, the son of Gustav and Caroline Melander, in Gonvick, where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Navy. He moved to the Twin Cities and lived in Stacy, where he worked for Ford Motor Co.

He is survived by sons, Tim (Susan McElderry), Maple Plain, Lee, of Stacy, and Chad (Karen), Isanti; sisters, June (Frank) Neal, DesMoines, Wash., Grace Nyland, Clearbrook, and Muriel Wagner, Denver; and a brother, Gene Melander, Gonvick.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Samhold Lutheran Church, Gonvick.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley, Minn., and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: United Lutheran Cemetery, Berner, Minn.

Eugene 'Tar' C. Theis

GUTHRIE, Minn. -- Eugene "Tar" C. Theis, 71, Guthrie, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at home.

Eugene Claude Theis was born March 11, 1928, the son of Louie and Anna (Binsfield) Theis, in Guthrie, where he attended school. He worked in Guthrie his entire life. He married Helen Mortenson on June 3, 1950. He worked for more than 30 years with Burlington Northern Railroad and retired in the mid-1980s as a section foreman. Helen Theis died in March 1997.

He is survived by daughters, Sue (Larry) Warpula, Hibbing, Minn., Betty (Artie) Weber, Alexander, N.D., and Candy Lindahl, Guthrie; a son, Joe (Lori), Nary, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; sisters, Irene, Hon, Lee and Myrt; and brothers, Gib and Eddie.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Sev.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Guthrie Cemetery, with a memorial gathering following in Guthrie Bible Chapel (Cease, Bemidji).

Orville Farstad

NEWFOLDEN, Minn. -- Orville Farstad, 80, Newfolden, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at North Valley Health Center, Warren, Minn.

Orville Andrew Farstad was born Jan. 21, 1918, the son of Ole Iver and Anna Teolina (Offerdahl) Farstad, in Newfolden. He grew up and attended school near Strandquist, Minn. He lived most of his life in Newfolden, where he farmed until moving to the Good Samaritan Center, Warren.

He is survived by sisters, Adeline (Clifford) Dahl, St. Paul, and Eunice Nelson, Edith Hautla and Delores Berg, all of Edina, Minn.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Norman; and a sister, Opal.

Services: 12: 30 p.m. Saturday, Green Funeral Home Chapel, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home.

Burial: Oak Grove Cemetery, Newfolden.

Raymond 'Pete' Anderson

DONALDSON, Minn. -- Raymond "Pete" Anderson, 70, Donaldson, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at his cabin near Lake Bronson, Minn.

Raymond Anderson was born Aug. 3, 1928, the son of Ernest and Nora (Eilertson) Anderson, in Halma, Minn., where he attended school. He married Lorrayne Norberg on July 25, 1964, in Minneapolis. They lived in Lake Bronson and moved to Donaldson in 1967. He worked at the Larry Bogestad Farm for many years. Lorrayne Anderson died May 12, 1998.

He is survived by daughters, Lindie (Roger) Anderson, Hoople, N.D.; Laura (Greg) Tougtes, Fargo, Lola (Mitch) Karol, Kennedy, Minn., Jodi Cedergren Hallock, Minn., and Jill (Tim) Russell, Roseau, Minn.; a son, Robert Haugen, Lake Bronson; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Roger (Bonnie) and Gary, both of Halma, and Gene, Missouri; and sisters, Arlene (Chester) Martinson and Idell Anderson, both of Halma.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jamie; brothers, Alvin and Duane; and a sister, Florence.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Zion Lutheran Church, Lake Bronson.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Hughes Funeral Home, Hallock.

Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Lake Bronson.

Rose Anderson

GREENBUSH, Minn. -- Rose Anderson, 81, Greenbush, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998 at Roseau (Minn.) Area Hospital.

Rose Eleanor Anderson was born Feb. 8, 1917, the daughter of John and Oline (Bjerland) Johnson, in Strathcona, Minn. She graduated from Middle River (Minn.) High School in 1935. She attended teachers' training at Warren, Minn., and from 1936, taught rural schools in the Strathcona area. She married Orville Anderson on June 16, 1940, in Strathcona. They lived and farmed in Deer Township, Roseau County. Orville Anderson died Nov. 24, 1974.

She is survived by a son, Allen (Susan), Greenbush; a daughter, Avis, Minneapolis; two grandchildren; and sisters, Sigri Nelson, Greenbush, and Alice Garrett, Caldwell, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Olaf, Julius, Norman, Bill and Torben.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Greenbush.

Visitation: After 5 p.m. today, Collins Funeral Chapel, Greenbush, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bethlehem Church Cemetery.

Eldon Peterson

HALLOCK, Minn. -- Eldon Peterson, 84, Hallock, formerly of Cokato, Minn., died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, in Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center, Hallock.

Eldon Peterson was born Oct. 3, 1914, the son of Peter and Caroline Peterson, in Cokato, where he attended school graduating in 1931. He attended teachers college in Cokato. He taught in area schools for seven years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. He married Florence Johnson in 1949, in Hallock. They lived near Cokato. In 1987, they retired and moved to Hallock.

He is survived by his wife.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Lawrence and Clarence; and sisters, Ruth, Geraldine, Hazel and Blanche.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday in Grace Lutheran Church, Hallock.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Hughes Funeral Home, Hallock.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock.

Glenna Strandemo

MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- Glenna Strandemo, 67, Mahnomen, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, in Mahnomen Health Center Hospital.

Glenna Brynjolfson was born March 29, 1931, the daughter of Glenn and Susie (Plante) Brynjolfson, in Willow City, N.D., where she attended school, graduating in 1948. She graduated from the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, Minn., in 1952. She moved to Mahnomen in 1952. She married Vernon Strandemo on June 30, 1954, in Willow City. She taught music in Mahnomen Public Schools, retiring in May 1995.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Guy (Kim), Walker, Minn.; daughters, Gay (Tracy Will) Strandemo, Waunakee, Wis., Jill Strandemo, Mahnomen, and Jacqueline (Mike) Jahner, Albuquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren; her mother, Willow City; a brother, Morris (Dinah), Bismarck; and a sister, Carroll (Dan) Lynch, Williston, N.D.

She was preceded in death by her father; and a sister, Ann.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Mahnomen.

Visitation: 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday in Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen, 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in the church, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Mahnomen.
