A. Duane Knutson
FERTILE, Minn. -- A. Duane Knutson, 72, Fertile, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, in Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile.
A. Duane Knutson was born March 3, 1926, the son of Theodore and Eva Amelia (Blackstead) Knutson, in Crookston. He graduated from Fertile-Beltrami High School in 1943. He began a vending machine route called Automatic Sales Co. He married Idola Oberg on June 13, 1949, in Angus, Minn. He retired in 1975. He was the voice of Fertile News on KROX Radio for 35 years.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Dana (Anita); a daughter, Delrae Knutson, Chanhassen, Minn.; two grandchildren; and sisters, Aloma (George) Dreblow, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Janice (Donald) Bakken, Fertile.
He was preceded in death by a sister, LuVerne Nygaard; and a brother, Kerwin.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in the church (Erikson-Vik, Fertile).
Gladys M. Anderson
CLEARBROOK, Minn. -- Gladys M. Anderson, 90, Clearbrook, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in the Good Samaritan Center, Clearbrook, where she had lived since 1993.
Gladys M. Holte was born April 1, 1908, the daughter of Gabriel and Mathilda (Nelson) Holte, in Eddy Township, Clearwater County, Minn. She attended school in Clearbrook, graduating in 1928. She attended Bemidji State Teachers College and taught school for six years. She worked in Minneapolis for six years. She married Elmer Anderson in 1941 in Clearbrook. She worked in a defense plant in California, during World War II. In 1947, they purchased a grocery store in Windom, Minn. They sold the store in 1951. She worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office in Cottonwood County for 25 years. After retiring, she worked in the deputy registrar's office in Windom. Elmer Anderson died in 1975.
She is survived by a sister, Clara West, Mesa, Ariz.; and brothers, Alf, Bagley, and Norman (Violet), Mankato, Minn.
She was preceded in death by two brothers; and a sister.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church at Ebro Corner, Bagley.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Resthaven Memory Gardens, Windom. (Cease, Bagley).
Carl O. Sovick
FOSSTON, Minn. -- Carl O. Sovick, 85, Fosston, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in Greensview Health Care Center, Bagley, Minn.
Carl O. Sovick was born Feb. 9, 1913, the son of Hans and Hilda (Solberg) Sovick, in Columbia Township, Clearwater County, Minn., where he attended school. He farmed with his brothers in Columbia Township. In 1993, he moved to Arden Hills, Minn., and in 1994, he moved to Fosston.
He is survived by sisters, Evelyn Borud, Bagley, Minn., and Rebecca Rud, Ruth Trulsen, Helen Sovick, all of Fosston; a brother, Harold, Bagley; and a companion, Marleone Gunderson, Fosston.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Leonard and Clifford.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Cease Family Funeral Home Chapel, Bagley.
Visitation: 6 to 9 p.m. today and one hour before services in the chapel.
Burial: St. Petri Cemetery, Bagley.
Edna M. Dittmer
HALSTAD, Minn. -- Edna M. Dittmer, 54, Halstad, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Edna Marie Moltzan was born July 26, 1944, the daughter of Edward and Henrietta "Etta" (Stollenwerk) Moltzan, in Detroit Lakes, Minn. She moved with her family to Great Falls, Mont., where she attended school. She married David Dittmer on Aug. 19, 1961, in Great Falls. They moved to Gary, Minn. In the early 1970s, she owned and operated the Gary Cafe. In the summer of 1977, they moved to Halstad. She worked for the Scott Warner Farm, Shelly Cafe and the Halstad Lutheran Memorial Home as a cook. In 1981, she began working as head cook for the Norman County West School District in Halstad.
She is survived by her husband; sons, David Jr. (Teri), and Michael (Tara Gilbertson), both of Moorhead; daughters, Lorie (Randy) Paulsrud, Halstad, Sherrie (Jay Toy) Dittmer, McGrann, Pa., and Julie (Jerry) Rognile, Clara City, Minn.; nine grandchildren; brothers, Erwin "Bud" (Carol), Great Falls, Harold, Dent, Minn., and Jim (Pat), Billings, Mont.; and sisters, Vernadeen (Mike) Westerbur, Billings, Dorothy Namatka, Delane (Lloyd) McMullen, both of Bandera, Texas, and Mary Lou Mengus, Great Falls.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Richard.
Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Halstad Lutheran Church.

Burial: Pleasant View Cemetery, Ada, Minn. (Fredrikson, Ada).
Marvin Svien
WINGER, Minn. -- Marvin Svien, 74, Winger, Minn., died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at home.
Marvin Svien was born June 4, 1924, the son of Oliver and Anna (Risen) Svien, in Erskine, Minn. He attended school in Winger. He worked on the farm until joining the U.S. Army. After his discharge, he worked for a furniture company in Seattle, Wash. He returned to Winger. He worked for local farmers and for the City of Winger under the Green Thumb program.
He is survived by his mother, Fosston, Minn.; brothers, Norris, Bloomington, Minn., James, Seattle, Rudolph, Lakewood, Colo., and Lloyd (Audrey), Minneapolis; and a sister, Ruth (Chuck) Beck, Brooklyn Park, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Orville; and sisters, Esther Fay and Mary Ann Svien.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Calvery Lutheran Church, Winger.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Winger Cemetery (Mattson, Mahnomen, Minn.).

Clarence E. Johnson
FISHER, Minn. -- Clarence E. Johnson, 83, Fisher, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, in East Grand Forks.
Clarence E. Johnson was born March 29, 1915, the son of Otto and Hanna (Paulson) Johnson, in Esmond, N.D. He attended school in Isabelle, N.D. He worked on farms in the Isabelle area and served his country during World War II. He married Agnes Klein on Dec. 26, 1950, in Maddock, N.D. They moved to East Grand Forks, where he worked for Northern Pacific/Burlington Northern Railroad. He retired in 1981.
He is survived by his wife; a sister, Leona Johnson, Esmond; and brothers, Harold (Dorothy), Devils Lake, and Leonard and Art, both of Esmond.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian; and brothers, Albert and Donald.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Stennes Funeral Home Chapel, East Grand Forks.
Visitation: Two hours before services in the chapel.
Burial: Vasa Cemetery, Esmond.

Clarence Olson
MENTOR, Minn. -- Clarence Olson, 77, Mentor, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, in McIntosh (Minn.) Manor Nursing Home.
Clarence Lenard Olson was born July 3, 1921, the son of Carl and Anna (Gunderson) Olson, in Erskine. He attended school in Crookston and Mentor. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He worked in construction and for Crystal Sugar in East Grand Forks. He later worked for the City of Mentor. He retired in 1996.
He is survived by a sister, Sylvia, Mentor.
Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Faith Lutheran Church, Mentor.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Faith Lutheran Cemetery (Carlin-Hoialmen, Erskine).
Dr. Philip Olson
EDINA, Minn. -- Dr. Philip Olson, 74, Bloomington, Minn. and Oldsmar, Fla., formerly of Edina, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998.
Philip Olson was born and grew up in Grand Forks. He attended the UND undergraduate and medical schools, graduating from the University of Illinois School of Medicine. He did his residency in radiology at the University of Minnesota. He served in the Army and the Navy. He practiced radiology in Minneapolis for 34 years at St. Barnabus Hospital and Methodist Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; children, Dr. Paul (Liz), Edina, Philip, Sherman Oaks, Calif., and Randi Olson, Oldsmar; a grandson; brothers, Clifford, Grand Forks, and Dr. Stewart, Las Vegas; and a sister, Margaret Schlegel, Sandwood, N.J.
Services: Will be held in the summer in Minnesota. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Roy Linder
HALLOCK, Minn. -- Roy Linder, 74, Hallock, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Roy Dean Linder was born May 18, 1923, the son of Albert and Annie (Murray) Linder, in Hallock, where he attended school. He joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He returned to Hallock, where he worked as a bridge builder. He married Marlys Horgen on Feb. 9, 1963, in Minneapolis, where he also worked building bridges, until his retirement in 1989. They moved to Hallock on July 22, 1994.
He is survived by his wife.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald.
Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Grace Lutheran Church, Hallock.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, in Hughes Funeral Home, Hallock.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock.
Clara Doble
FOSSTON, Minn. -- Clara Doble, 101, Fosston, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, in Midway Care Center, Fosston.
Clara Abrahamson was born Aug. 1, 1896, the daughter of Noah and Karen (Olson) Abrahamson, in Bagley, Minn., where she graduated from high school. She owned and operated a retail women's clothing store in Fosston. She married William Schaffer. They lived in Fosston, where they owned and operated Schaffer Rest Home. He died in 1963. She married Frank Doble in 1970. They moved to Bowling Green, Ky. He preceded her in death. In 1988, she moved back to Fosston, to the Midway Care Center.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Bonnie (John) Smith, Bowling Green; and two stepgranddaughters.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, Fosston.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Rosehill Cemetery, Fosston.
Arthur Klasen
OKLEE, Minn. -- Arthur Klasen, 80, Oklee, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, in Fosston (Minn.) First Care Hospital.
Arthur Klasen was born Nov. 28, 1917, the son of John and Mary (Toenies) Klasen, in Oklee, where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army form July 7, 1942, to Nov. 15, 1945. He returned to Oklee, where he farmed, logged and was a heavy equipment operator until his retirement in 1981.
He is survived by sisters-in-law, Franny Klasen, Josie Klasen, Matte Klasen and Annette Klasen; and his companion, Louise Klasen, Oklee.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Leo, Andy, Joe, Pete, Bill and two in infancy
Services: 2: 30 p.m. Saturday, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Oklee.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Petterson Funeral Home, Red Lake Falls, Minn., and one hour before services in the church.
