Mildred Rice
FERTILE, Minn. -- Mildred Rice, 91, Fertile, formerly of Gary, Minn., died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, in Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile, where she had lived since November of 1996.
Mildred Sulerud was born Jan. 16, 1907, the daughter of Christ and Emily (Rishof) Sulerud, in Gary, where she attended school. She worked in a cafe in Fertile. She married John Rice on Oct. 11, 1930, in Gary. They lived in Garfield Township, Polk County, Minn. They moved to Garden Township, Polk County in 1940. John Rice died May 24, 1978. She moved to Fertile.
She is survived by a daughter, JoAnn (William) Elleson, Crookston; a daughter-in-law, Lyla Rice, Huron, S.D.; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brothers, Earl (Helen), Lisbon, N.D. and Ellsworth (Alta), Fertile; sisters, Blanche Olson, Fertile and Muriel (Ernie) Laabs, Arizona; and a sister-in-law, Olga Sulerud, Fertile.
She was preceded in death by a son, Verdell; brothers, Russel and Herbert; and a sister, Olive Eid.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Faaberg Lutheran Cemetery, Fertile (Erikson-Vik, Fertile).
Herbert N. Pagnac
STEPHEN, Minn. -- Herbert N. Pagnac, 90, Stephen, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in North Valley Health Center, Warren, Minn.
Herbert N. Pagnac was born Oct. 18, 1908, the son of Jules and Georgia (Elfrink) Pagnac, in Argyle, Minn. In 1928, he graduated from Stephen High School. He married Millie Kroke on Nov. 6, 1928. He worked as an aviation mechanic in Minneapolis and Los Angeles. They returned to Stephen in 1931. He worked for the Marshall County Highway Department until 1946 and began farming in 1950.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Donalyne (James) Thibodo, Stephen and Texas; sons, Norman and Roger (Beverly), both of Stephen; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and a sister, LuVerne Downs, Scottsdale, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jon; a grandson; sisters, Ruth VanPelt and Florence Grant; and brothers, Lawrence and Forrest.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, First Lutheran Church, Stephen.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 5 p.m. masonic service and 6 p.m. prayer service, Adamson-Austin Funeral Home, Stephen.
Burial: Stephen Cemetery.
Dagny Hoff
OSLO, Minn. -- Dagny Hoff, 94, Oslo, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in North Valley Health Center, Warren, Minn.
Dagny Emily Johnson was born Oct. 13, 1904, the daughter of John Gust and Alette (Swanson) Johnson, in Warren, where she graduated from high school. She attended normal training at North Star College, Warren. She taught at country schools. She married William Hoff on June 26, 1929. They lived near Oslo, where they farmed. William Hoff died June 15, 1965. In December 1996, she moved to Warren.
She is survived by a son, Donald (Mercedes), Oslo; daughters-in-law, Cathy Hoff, Chicago, and Dawn Hoff, Cottage Grove, Minn.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Hazel (Lawrence "Pat") Anderson and Edna Klet, both of Warren.
She was preceded in death by sons, Robert and James; three brothers; and a sister.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Warren.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Oak Park Cemetery, Oslo (Quanrud-DuBore, Warren).
Corinne Haugstad
HALLOCK, Minn. -- Corinne Haugstad, 59, Hallock, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at home.
Corinne Pearson was born Dec. 2, 1939, the daughter of William and Laurienne (Lang) Pearson, in Hallock, where she graduated from high school in 1957. She married Harold Haugstad on July 12, 1957, in Hallock, where they farmed.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Danny (Dee Verle), Hallock, Scott (Erin), Houston, and Brent, Electra, Texas; daughters, Connie (Frank) Rekuski, Arden Hills, Minn., Laurie (Jon) Fowler, Hallock, and Penny (Dennis) Scholler, Cavalier, N.D.; 10 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; sisters, Avis (Pat) O'Neil, Chatfield, Minn., and Phyllis (Magnus) Gudmundson, Hallock; and a brother, Rick, Atlanta.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Lowell and Verne.
Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, Grace Lutheran Church, Hallock.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 6 p.m. prayer service, in the church.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery (Hughes, Hallock).
Eugene Mckenzie
FOSSTON, Minn. -- Eugene Mckenzie, 44, Crystal, Minn., formerly of Fosston, Minn., died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at home.
Eugene James Mckenzie was born Jan. 21, 1954, the son of Dorsey Mckenzie, in White Earth, Minn. He was raised by his grandparents, Henry and Grace Mckenzie, in Lengby, Minn., He graduated from high school in Fosston in 1971. He worked for Nelson Egg Farm, Bagley, Minn. He moved to the Twin Cities, where he worked as a cook at the Sparkle Cafe, Minneapolis, for 20 years. He worked at Mystic Lake Casino, Shakopee, Minn. He retired in 1996.
He is survived by brothers, Rod Hodgkins, Fosston, John Roering, Waubun, and Alex Mckenzie, Mahnomen; and a sister, Carole Mckenzie, Lengby.
He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen.
Visitation: 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, in the funeral home.
Burial: Lengby City Cemetery.
Doris M. Tofsly
McINTOSH, Minn. -- Doris M. Tofsly, 75, McIntosh, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, in First Care Hospital, Fosston, Minn.
Doris Mathilda Johnson was born Dec. 17, 1923, the daughter of Gust and Mary (Berglund) Johnson, in Freedhem, Minn. She graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. She worked as a nursing supervisor at Minneapolis General Hospital. She graduated from the Sister Kenny Institute of Physical Therapy in Minneapolis and worked there until 1955. She nursed at Shriner's Hospital for crippled children in Minneapolis, King County Hospital in Seattle and at the Honeywell plant in Minneapolis. She married Berner Tofsly on Sept. 27, 1958, in Minneapolis. They lived and farmed near McIntosh. She worked at Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine, and the hospital in Fosston, Minn.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Julie (Mike) Quinn, McIntosh; a son, John (Ashley), McIntosh; four grandchildren; brothers, Danford (Olga), Little Falls, Minn., Edward (Ethel), Edina, Minn., and Warren (Agnes), Johnstown, Iowa; a sister, Florence (Thomas) Schmidt, Miami; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Radke, Fargo.
She was preceded in death by an infant brother; and a sister, Verna Wallace.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Fosston.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, McIntosh Community Centennial Center.
Burial: St. John's Cemetery, McIntosh (Carlin-Hoialmen, McIntosh).
L. Eugene 'Gene' Miller
BAUDETTE, Minn. -- L. Eugene "Gene" Miller, 80, formerly of Tracy, Minn., died Feb. 2, 1999, in Valley Lutheran Hospital, Mesa, Ariz.
L. Eugene Miller was born June 25, 1918, the son of Lewis and Edith (Swanson) Miller. He graduated from high school in Tracy in 1936. He attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. In 1939 he opened "Gene's Toggery" in Tracy. He married Doretta Marben on June 23, 1939, in Lamberton, Minn. They lived in Tracy until moving to Chicago Heights, Ill., in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 4, 1944 to April 1946. They returned to Tracy, where he worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone as a lineman and later as a construction foreman in Windom, Minn., until being transferred to Crookston, in 1962. He retired in 1978. They spent summers in Baudette and winters in Mesa.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Sheryl (David) Spencer, Tracy, and Nancie Hoerner, Crookston; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Margaret and Lila.

Ronald Waukazo
NAYTAHWAUSH, Minn. -- Ronald Waukazo, 49, Naytahwaush, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, in Jay Weise residence, Naytahwaush.
Ronald Waukazo was born Jan. 6, 1950, the son of Peter and Julie (Stevens) Waukazo, in Minneapolis. He attended school in Wayzata, Minn. He worked for Bob Smith Landscaping in the Minneapolis area before moving to Naytahwaush in 1984.
He is survived by brothers, Charles, Minneapolis, Will, White Earth, Minn., and Wayne, Aurora, Minn.; and sisters, Ramona Waukazo, Indianapolis, Ind., Tomah Toma, Phoenix, Waunita Umbel and Shirley Waukazo, both of Minneapolis, and Charnelle Larson, Plymouth, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and a sister.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Samuel Memorial Episcopal Church, Naytahwaush.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today and one hour before services in the church.

Amanda Edwardson
BADGER, Minn. -- Amanda Edwardson, 90, Badger, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, in Northwestern Hospital, Thief River Falls.
Amanda Knutson was born July 24, 1908, the daughter of Andrew and Mary (Moen) Knutson, in Ross, Minn., where she attended school. She worked in Grand Forks. She married Belmer Edwardson in May 1930, in Roseau County, Minn. They farmed east of Badger until their retirement. Belmer Edwardson died in 1978. In 1990 she moved to St. Hilaire, Minn. In 1993 she moved to Thief River Falls.
She is survived by daughters, Blanche (Peter) Goodwin, Great Falls, Mont., Jean (Earl) McKinley, Tulsa, Okla., Carol (John) Kurtzman, Brainerd, Minn., and Betty (William) Dormandy, St. Hilaire; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Anne Edwardson, Battle Lake, Minn., and Inga Wenberg, International Falls, Minn.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Anderson; brothers, Oscar and Knute; and sisters, Bertha, Olga and Clara.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Rose Lutheran Church, Roseau.
Visitation: Noon to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Helgeson Funeral Home Chapel, Roseau, and one hour before services in the church.

Raymond Donarski Sr.
STRANDQUIST, Minn. -- Raymond Donarski Sr., died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at home.
Raymond Joseph Donarski was born Sept. 23, 1920, the son of Joseph and Agnes (Adamski) Donarski, in Wright Township, Marshall County, Minn. He married Antoinette Grochowski on June 3, 1947, in Florian, Minn. They lived in Wright Township, where he farmed.
He is survived by his wife; children, Raymond Jr., Argyle, Minn., Gary (Marilyn) and Dale (Debbie), both of Newfolden, Minn., Patricia (Jule) Hanson and Rosalie (Cornel) Rygh, both of Warroad; eight grandchildren; sisters, Tess Morkassel, Ada, Minn., Mary Borowicz, Argyle, Loretta Donarski, Grand Forks, and Katherine Karpen, Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; and brothers, Conrad (Mary Ann), Viking, Minn., Stanley, Thief River Falls, and Bernard, Waconba, Ill.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Assumption Catholic Church, Florian.

Willard Clementson
FOSSTON, Minn. -- Willard Clementson, 70, Clarkston, Wash., formerly of Fosston, died Feb. 1, 1999, in Tri-State Memorial Hospital, Clarkston.
Willard Clark Clementson was born April 21, 1919, the son of Joseph and Nellie (Gandrud) Clementson, in Fosston, where he graduated from high school in 1938. He attended Crookston Agricultural School. He attended Bemidji State Teachers College. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Edna May Hunt on Nov. 20, 1942. He received a Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars and a combat medical badge. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Captain. He joined his father's sand and gravel contracting business in Fosston. He attended UND and in 1960 he received his civil engineering degree. He worked with the Forest Service in Helena, Mont., and as a forest engineer on the Nezperce National Forest, Grangeville, Idaho. He worked in Washington, D.C., as a chief transportation operations and maintenance engineer. He retired in 1982 and moved to Clarkston.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Sarah Clementson Schrader, Clarkston; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Arvid (Alene), Fosston; and a sister, Norma Dillenburg, Grand Forks.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert William; a brother, John; sisters, Marion Clementson and Joann Thompson; and brothers-in-law, Hayden Thompson and Cyril Dillenburg.
