Kermit Steen

LANCASTER, Minn. -- Kermit Steen, 78, Lancaster, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at home.

Kermit Steen was born Oct. 7, 1920, the son of Pete and Marie (Norman) Steen, in Lancaster, where he graduated from high school. He joined the U.S. Army on July 3, 1942. He was discharged Nov. 21, 1945, and returned to Lancaster, where he farmed.

He is survived by a brother, Vernet, Minneapolis; sisters, Gertrude Prosser, Lake Bronson, Minn., and Hedvig Timm, Escondido, Calif.; and sisters-in-law, Betty Steen, Lancaster, Elsa Steen, Hallock, Minn., and Vendla Steen, Palos Heights, Ill.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Willard, Orville, Helmer and Donald; and a sister, Dora Welch.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Sion Lutheran Church, Lancaster.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Riverview Memorial Garden Cemetery, Lancaster (Hughes, Hallock, Minn.)

Brian E. Reese

GRACETON, Minn. -- Brian E. Reese, 55, Flint, Mich., formerly of Graceton, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, in Hurley Medical Center, Flint.

Brian Ellis Reese was born the son of Herbert and Harriet (Sparks) Reese, in McDougald Township, Lake of the Wood County, Minn. He graduated from high school in Williams, Minn., in 1961. He attended Bemidji State Teachers College and Thief River Falls Beautician School. He worked as a certified beautician until joining the U.S. Army in 1965 and serving in Vietnam. While in the Army, he attended the University of Southern California. He was discharged in 1973. He married Nhung Pham on July 20, 1972, in Williams. They lived in Minneapolis before moving to Cambridge, Minn., where he worked for Murphy Trucking and Glendenning Trucking. In 1978 they returned to McDougald Township. He worked for Marvin Windows for 15 years. In 1993 he bought Graceton Bar and Restaurant which he managed until 1996. They moved to Flint, where he worked as a Realtor, a supervisor at General Motors, and a floor manager for Angelos Restaurant.

He is survived by his wife; daughter, Thuy (Keith) Pieper, Croton Falls, N.Y., Susie (Rick) Dimish, Roseau, Minn., and Dian Reese, Flint; two grandchildren; his mother, Graceton; and a brother, Paul (Loretta), Big Falls, Minn.,

He was preceded in death by his father.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Baudette.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Helgeson Funeral Home, Baudette, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Graceton Cemetery.

Military Rites: Baudette American Legion, V.F.W. Ceremonial Team.

Robert F. Berkner

MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- Robert R. Berkner, 95, Arden Hills, Minn., formerly of Mahnomen, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, in Presbyterian Home, Arden Hills.

Robert F. Berkner was born Oct. 2, 1903, the son of Adam and Florence (Walsh) Berkner, in Waverly, Minn. He graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis in 1927. He worked in the grain and flour exchanges and for American Express. He worked as a road salesman, selling mill and elevator equipment, and audited books for small businesses. He was a night operator of a mill in Rugby, N.D. He purchased the Mahnomen Midget Flour Mill. He married Cecelia "Cel" Madden on May 24, 1930, in Rochester, Minn. He semi-retired in the mid-1970s. Cel Berkner died in May 1995. He later moved to Arden Hills.

He is survived by sons, Robert (Donna), Billings, Mont., George, Paradise Valley, Ariz., James (Sharon), Verona, Wis., and Thomas (Mary), Lindstrom, Minn.; daughters, Margaret, Ellisville, Mo., and Marian (Frank) Verlot, Los Altos, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Joanna (Bill) Ainsworth, Lake Oswego, Ore.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Lu and Florence; and a brother, George.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, St. Michael's Catholic Church, Mahnomen.

Visitation: 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and 9 a.m. to 2: 45 p.m. Friday, Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen.

Burial: St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Mahnomen.

Alice Uggen

FOSSTON, Minn. -- Alice Uggen, 81, Fosston, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, in Johnson Rest Home, Fosston.

Alice Selma Uggen was born April 9, 1917, the daughter of Fritz and Margarete (Johnson) Uggen, in Erskine, Minn. She graduated from high school in McIntosh, Minn., in 1937, and from business college in Bemidji in 1943. She worked as a teller and bookkeeper for 23 years at First National Bank, McIntosh. After her retirement, she took care of her mother.

She is survived by a brother, Floyd, Erskine.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Christen.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, McIntosh.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Centennial Community Center, McIntosh.

Burial: Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery (Carlin-Hoialmen, McIntosh).

Ray O. 'Sparky' Gustafson

GREENBUSH, Minn. -- Ray O. "Sparky" Gustafson, 63, Greenbush, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.

Ray Orvis Gustafson was born Nov. 11, 1935, the son of Gustaf and Cecilia (Botoche) Gustafson, in Lind Township, Roseau County, Minn., where he graduated from high school in 1954. He farmed with his family. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1964. He returned to the family farm. He married Gloria Jean Gorsuch on Sept. 1, 1907. They farmed in Greenbush.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Celeste Wojciechowski, Halma, Minn., and Brenda Gustafson, Newfolden, Minn.; two grandchildren; and brothers, Gayford (Florence), Enumclaw, Wash., and Arnie (Virgene), Kent, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Willis and Ronald.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, United Free Lutheran Church, Greenbush.

Visitation: After 5 p.m. Thursday, Gieseke Funeral Chapel, Greenbush, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, Greenbush.

Blanche Berry

BAGLEY, Minn. -- Blanche Berry, 91, Bagley, died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.

Blanche Guerard was born March 15, 1907, the daughter of Peter and O'Marilla Guerard, in Brooks, Minn., where she attended school. She married Archie Berry on Sept. 28, 1926, in Brooks. They farmed in Brooks until moving to Bagley in 1935. They started, operated and built several businesses in Bagley. Archie Berry preceded her in death.

She is survived by daughters, Theres (Jim) O'Neill, Tacoma, Wash., Genevieve Berry, San Francisco, Delores (Jim) O'Connor, Fargo, and Mary (Dennis) Lofthus, Bagley; a son, Mike (Susan), Moundsview, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Berry, Bagley; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jeanette Brusven, Fargo.

She was preceded in death by sons, James, David, Robert and an infant son; a grandson; and a sister, Lillian.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bagley.

Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Bagley.

Doris Peterson

LANCASTER, Minn. -- Doris Peterson, 69, Lancaster, died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, in Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center, Hallock, Minn.

Doris Irene Johnson was born Oct. 24, 1929, the daughter of Albert and Esther (Lindstrom) Johnson, in Hallock. She graduated from high school in Lancaster in 1948. She graduated with a teaching certificate from Moorhead State College in 1950 and taught school in Greenbush, Minn., until 1951. She married Delbert Peterson on June 12, 1951, in Kennedy, Minn. They lived and farmed in Lancaster. She taught second grade in Lancaster from 1964 to 1974. She worked as a substitute teacher.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Jerroll (Diane), Lancaster; a daughter, Marla (Rick) Failing, Hallock; five grandchildren; brothers, Edward, Lancaster, and Arvid (Sonja), Bakersfield, Calif.; and sisters, Margaret (Rudolph) Olsen, Rockford, Ill., and Edith (Richard) Ehrenstrom, St. Croix Falls, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Sion Lutheran Church, Lancaster.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Hughes Funeral Home, Hallock.

Burial: Riverview Memorial Garden Cemetery, Lancaster.

Richard Adrian

WARREN, Minn. -- Richard Adrian, 23, Warren, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, in Marshall County, Minn., as a result of a car accident.

Richard John Adrian was born Nov. 15, 1975, the son of Ron and Rebecca Adrian, in Warren, where he graduated from high school in 1994. He was attending North Dakota State University, Fargo, majoring in civil engineering.

He is survived by his parents; sisters, Catherine and Roxanne, both of Warren; and a brother, David, Warren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford; and grandparents, James and Virginia Terman, and Mac and Alice Adrian.

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Warren.

Visitation: after 6 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services, all in the church.

Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Warren (Quanrud-DuBore, Warren).

E. LeRoy Kaasa

PUPOSKY, Minn. -- E. LeRoy Kaasa, 65, Puposky, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.

Eivind LeRoy Kaasa was born March 3, 1933, the son of Eivind and Nina (Staffne) Kaasa, in Nebish Township, Beltrami County, Minn., where he attended school. He worked for D.C. Dunnon Box Factory. He entered the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. He married Grace Haley on June 9, 1956, in Pinewood, Minn. They lived in the Iron Range before moving to Puposky. He worked in the wood as a logger, drove a milk truck for his brother and worked for Land O'Lakes Wood Treating, Tenstrike, Minn. Grace Kaase died Feb. 27, 1982.

He is survived by sons, Leon, David (Brandy) and Dale, all of Puposky; daughters, Norene Kaasa, Hines, Minn., and Laurie (Les) Prince, Bemidji; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother, Bemidji; brothers, Arlak (Helen) and Robert (Geraldine), both of Puposky, Art (Marilyn), Bemidji, and Norvald (Margaret), Fosston, Minn.; and sisters, Irene Runyan, Bemidji, Jean (George) Roberts, Minneapolis, and Lenore (Robert) Workman, Fairbanks, Alaska.

He was preceded in death by his father; and brothers, Butch, Ed and Orben.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Alaska Township Cemetery.

Military Rites: Harold Baggenstoss VFW, Bemidji.

Evelyn M. Bentley

TWIN VALLEY, Minn. -- Evelyn M. Bentley, 87, Twin Valley, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, in Lutheran Memorial Home, Twin Valley.

Evelyn Marie Lee was born July 14, 1911, the daughter of Tallef and Lina (Pederson) Lee, in Ada, Minn., where she attended school. She worked on the family farm. At age 17, she moved to Canada. She returned to Ada and worked in her father's restaurant. She married Delbert Bentley on Jan. 21, 1935, in Borup, Minn. She worked for the Borup Public School as a cook and bus driver. They operated a grocery store in Borup. In 1966, they moved to Southern California, where they managed apartments. In 1986, they moved to Apache Junction, Ariz. Delbert Bentley died Sept. 15, 1995. In June 1998, she moved to Twin Valley.

She is survived by daughters, Bonnie (Ervin) Mund, Grand Forks, and Janice (Eugene) Halstad, Long Beach, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Theodore, Edwin, Melvin, Carl and Victor.

Services: Will be held at a later date (Fredrikson, Ada).
