Viola Payment

ERSKINE, Minn. -- Viola Payment, 85, Erskine, formerly of Oklee, Minn., died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, in Pioneer Memorial Home, Erskine, where she had lived the past 7 years.

Viola Riendeau was born Sept. 11, 1913, the daughter of Phil and Permila (Gauthier) Riendeau, in Oklee, where she attended school. She married George Riel on Nov. 3, 1932, in Oklee. In 1941, they moved to Iowa. They returned to the Oklee area and farmed. George Riel died in 1963. She married John Payment on Dec. 9, 1972. He died in 1981. She lived in Oklee and worked for OMC as a seamstress.

She is survived by a son, Richard (Marilyn), Oklee; a daughter, Yvonne (Dan) Keefe, Thief River Falls; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Agnes Marks, East Grand Forks; and a sister-in-law, Margie Riendeau, Grand Rapids, Minn.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Elmer, Wilbert and Ernest; and sisters, Mabel and Amanda.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Oklee.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery (Petterson, Red Lake Falls).

Martha Matejcek

WAUBUN, Minn. -- Martha Matejcek, 83, Medford, Minn., formerly of Waubun, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at home.

Martha Matejcek was born March 12, 1915, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Spinler) Matejcek, in Waubun, where she attended school. She worked as a housekeeper in the Waubun area. In 1952, she moved to a farm near Owatonna, Minn., where she lived with her brother, Joseph. They moved to Medford in 1982.

She is survived by a brother, Frank, Waubun; and sisters, Ann, Waubun, and Mary Johnson, Crookston.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph and Vincent; and a sister, Agnes.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, St. Ann's Catholic Church, Waubun.

Visitation: 6: 30 to 8: 30 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services all in the church.

Burial: St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery (Mattson, Mahnomen, Minn.).

John Stannage

HALLOCK, Minn. -- John Stannage, 76, Wauchula, Fla., formerly of Hallock, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998.

John Stannage was born May 11, 1922, the son of Samuel and Anna (Johnson) Stannage, in Hallock. He served in the military during World War II. He moved to Wauchula 54 years ago. He worked as a building contractor.

He is survived by his wife, Natha Lee Stannage; daughters, Linda Stannage and Sylvia Lee (James Jr.) Parker, both of Wauchula; four grandchildren; and a brother, Samuel, Hallock.

Services: 3: 30 p.m. Wednesday, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints, Wauchula.

Visitation: 6: 30 to 8: 30 p.m. today, Curry Raley Funeral Home, Wauchula, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Wauchula Cemetery.

Esther M. Conway

ARGYLE, Minn. -- Esther M. Conway, 87, Argyle, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, in Good Samaritan Center, Warren, Minn.

Esther Marion Conway was born Jan. 20, 1911, the daughter of Thomas and Anna (Solseng) Conway, in Niagara, N.D. She lived in Niagara until moving to Argyle in the late 1980's. She worked as a housekeeper for the Devils Lake School for the Deaf. She moved to the Good Samaritan in 1995.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Grace Conway, Argyle.

She was preceded in death by brothers, John, Oliver and William; and a sister, Agnes.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Quanrud-DuBore Funeral Home, Warren.

Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.

Burial: In Niagara.

Clara Day

BAGLEY, Minn. -- Clara Day, 58, Bagley, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at Greensview Health Care Center, Bagley.

Clara Gagnon was born March 4, 1940, the daughter of Louis and Anna Gagnon, in Caribou, Maine, where she attended school. She married Clifford Tibbetts on Jan. 9, 1960. They lived in several places until moving to Bagley in 1967. They lived on the family farm and she worked at Nelsons Eggs. They moved to Big Falls in 1978, where she worked at a sawmill. They returned to Bagley in 1980. Clifford Tibbetts died March 26, 1985. She married Roy Day on June 20, 1986, in Punta-Gorda, Fla. They lived in Florida until moving to Bagley in 1997. They did finish carpentry work.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Nila (Jim) Mudick, Bloomington, Minn., Lynn (Mark) Bellefy and Sue (Dennis) Larson, both of Bagley, and Kari Tibbetts, Clearbrook, Minn.; sons, Bobbie (Gail), in Indiana, Clifford (Elia) Tibbetts, in Texas, and Allen Tibbetts and Clinton (Tonya) Tibbetts, both of Florida; a step son, Jonathon (Marrian) Day, in Florida; 19 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; sisters, Marie (Albert) Helms and Pat Cox, both of Maine; and a brother, Louis, in Maine.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jimmy; brothers, Armond and Lawrence; and a sister, Ruth.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Faith Hill Assembly of God Church, Bagley.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Minerva Township Cemetery, Bagley.

John Ranisate

OKLEE, Minn. -- John Ranisate, 76, Oklee, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, in Clearwater Hospital, Bagley.

John Ranisate was born Feb. 25, 1922, the son of Ole and Emma Ranisate, in Bagley. He worked in several places including Montana, North Dakota and Minnesota. He lived in Oklee before moving to Greensview Health Care Center three years ago.

He is survived by sisters, Nettie Anderson and Mae Olson, both of Bagley, and Mattie DePriest, of Montana.

He was preceded in death by six brothers; and four sisters.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Bagley (Cease, Bagley).

Emma Berg

ERSKINE, Minn.--Emma Berg, 93, Erskine, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, in Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine.

Emma Caroline Hagen was born Oct. 27, 1905, the daughter of John and Hannah (Brown) Hagen, in Badger Township, Polk County, Minn. She married Bennie Gran in 1934, in Maple Bay, Minn. They lived in Woodside Township, rural Erskine. Bennie Gran died in 1953. She married Carl Berg in 1960. They lived in Woodside Township. Carl Berg died in 1963. Emma moved to Erskine. She worked at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center. She moved to the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in 1994.

She is survived by sons, Orville (Mary Jo), Pierre, S.D., and Burton (Eunice), Plymouth, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Selma (Helmer) Trandem, Erskine, Myrtle Kjos, Fertile, Minn., and Florence Horn, Twin Valley, Minn.

She was preceded in death by six sisters; and three brothers.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Rodnes Lutheran Church, Erskine.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Rodnes Lutheran Church Cemetery (Carlin-Hoialmen, Fosston, Minn.).

Gladys Horstman

OKLEE, Minn. -- Gladys Hortsman, 88, Shelton, Wash., formerly of Oklee, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, in Shelton.

Gladys Lenora Johnson was born Nov. 10, 1909, the daughter of Nels and Carrie (Otis) Johnson, in Oklee. She married Lou Hortsman in 1928. They lived in Oklee. She moved to Shelton in 1993 to be near her family.

She is survived by sons, Jerry (Mary), Shelton and Lou (Sharon) Hortsman, Jr., Chewalah, Wash.; two grandsons; and a great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Lorraine; brothers, Peter, Goodwin, Harry, Lloyd and Melvin; and sisters, Nena and Annie.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Zion Lutheran Church, Oklee.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Oklee. Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church (Petterson, Oklee).

Delores A. Stromlund

NEWFOLDEN, Minn. -- Delores A. Stromlund, 70, Newfolden, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.

Delores Ann Lorenson was born July 4, 1928, the daughter of Rasmus and Esther (Strandberg) Lorenson, in Strathcona, Minn., where she attended school. She worked for several restaurants and for Arctic Cat. She worked at Greenbush (Minn.) Public School and Thief River Falls Middle School. She was employed by a food service in Lincoln, Neb. She married Edwin Stromlund on June 27, 1947, in Thief River Falls. They farmed from 1947 to 1964, when they moved to Greenbush. In 1970 they moved to Thief River Falls. She worked as a custodian for Franklin and Lincoln schools suntil 1981. She moved to a farm in Newfolden.

She is survived by her husband; children, Loren (Elaine), Isanti, Minn., Darrell (Debby), Roseau, Minn., and Denae (Bradley) Blawat, Viking, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother, Edward, Strathcona; and sisters, Lillian (Melvin) Koehnlein and Lila (Kennis) Anderson, both of Greenbush.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford; and sisters-in-law, Violet Lorenson and Dorothy Lorenson.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, New Hope Lutheran Church, Newfolden.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Lorenson Cemetery, Roseau.

Kenneth Schultz

ADA, Minn. -- Kenneth Schultz, 61, Ada, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in a Fargo Hospital.

Kenneth Joseph Schultz was born Nov. 22, 1936, the son of Joseph and Augusta (Reyer) Schultz, in Crookston, where he graduated from high school. He married Carmen Erickson on March 22, 1958, in St. Paul. They made their home in Cottage Grove, Minn., where he worked for Fuller Brush Co. They moved in 1969 to Alexandria, Minn., where he was a machinist for Douglas Machines. In 1985, they moved to Ada, where he worked for Ada-Borup school system as a bus driver and school custodian. Carmen Schultz died in 1993.

He is survived by a daughter, Joan Kiehne, Bemidji; two grandchildren; his mother; a brother, Jerry (Kathy) Schultz, Crookston; and sisters, Dorothy (Charles) Koubsky, Glenwood, Minn., Elaine (Frank) Koubsky, Lowry, Minn., and Joanne (Jerry) Hanson, Ada; and a sister-in-law, Donna Schultz, Willmar, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Zion Lutheran Church, Ada.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Fredrikson Funeral Home, Ada.

Burial: Ada Municipal Cemetery.

Alice Gregerson

BADGER, Minn. -- Alice Gregerson, 90, Badger, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in Roseau (Minn.) Area Hospital.

Alice Hazel Gunderson was born June 22, 1908, the daughter of Olaf and Geoline (Johnson) Gunderson, in Sunburg, Minn. She moved with her parents to Badger, where she attended school. She married Gilmore Gregerson on Oct. 22, 1929, in Greenbush, Minn. They farmed in Badger until 1972, when they moved. She had lived in Greenbush Nursing Home since August.

She is survived by her children, Lorriane (Bob) Hines, Ortonville, Minn., Orville, Aberdeen, Wash., Avis (Hilmer) Naslund, Williamina, Ore., Garfield (Bonnie) and Darrell (Becky), both of Brownsville, Minn., Ardell (Ruth), Coon Rapids, Minn., Ruth (James) Gust and Marcella (Tony) Gust, both of Strathcona, Minn., Mayo (Carol), Badger, Marlys (Glen) Jaenicke, Roseau, Sharon (Jerome) Henning, Middle River, Minn., and Debra Gregerson, Caldonia, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Darlene Gregerson; 45 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; a sister, Virgie (Lawrence) Wellen, Roseau; and a brother, Robert (Fayde), Roseau.

She was preceded in death by sons, Melford and Elwood; a grandchild; brothers, George, Arthur, Clifford, Franklyn, and Oscar; and sisters, Pearl, Viola, and Myrtle.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Our Redeemers Lutheran Church, Badger.

Visitation: Noon to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Roseau, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Nannestad Cemetery, Badger.
