MaryAnn Pieper

WARROAD, Minn. -- MaryAnn Pieper, 63, Warroad, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.

MaryAnn Lindsay was born May 5, 1935, the daughter of Sam and Pauline (Hipsher) Lindsay, in Warroad, where she attended school. She married Donald Pieper on March 29, 1952, in Warroad. They moved to the Iron Range before returning to Warroad in 1965. They bought a farm south of Warroad. In 1978 she moved into Warroad. She worked at the Warroad Care Center for 15 years. Donald Pieper died in 1976.

She is survived by children, David, Reno, Nev., Robert, Brookings, Ore., Connie Jean (Ernie) Feragen, Warroad, Gregory (Connie), Roosevelt, Minn., and Donald, Bliss, Idaho; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Sam, St. Paul, Minn., Bill (Rose), Williamson, N.Y., Jerry, in Oregon, and Rick, in California; and sisters, Jean (Tom) Gravelee, Grants Pass, Ore., Delores, in Oregon, and LaVerne Holzener, Taconite, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Oscar; a daughter, Carol Ann; brothers, Tom and Dennis; and a sister, Shirley.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Union Congregational Church, Warroad.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Helgeson Funeral Home, Warroad, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Warroad.

Wilbert 'Webb' Busse

LAPORTE, Minn. -- Wilbert "Webb" Busse, 84, Laporte, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, in Beltrami Nursing Home, Bemidji, where he had lived since Jan. 6, 1999.

Wilbert Wesley Busse was born Oct. 7, 1914, the son of John and Ida (Hein) Busse, in Beaulieu, Minn., where he attended school. He moved to Lake George, Minn., in 1939. He married Margaret "Peg" Jackson on Dec. 29, 1940, in Kabekona, Minn. They lived in Lake George until moving to Laporte in 1964. He married Mildred Fischel in 1964, in Sisseton, S.D. They lived in Laporte. He worked as a logger. He owned and operated the Laporte grocery and cafe, and he fixed lawn mowers. In 1996 he entered Woodrest Nursing Home, Walker, Minn.

He is survived by a son, Chum (Clara), Laporte; daughters, Jeanette Dwight and Donna Lathrop, both of Lake George; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Walter, Leland, Alvin and Morris; and sisters, Ethel, Helen, Violet and Gladys.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Laporte.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Lake George Cemetery in the spring.

Alton Guzek

RED LAKE FALLS, Minn. -- Alton Guzek, 65, Red Lake Falls, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, in Riverview Hospital, Crookston.

Alton Joseph Guzek was born Nov. 21, 1933, the son of Albin and Cecilia (Cota) Guzek, in Dorothy, Minn. He graduated from high school in Red Lake Falls. He married Phyllis Bishop on June 8, 1963, in Red Lake Falls. He worked for Red Lake Falls Silo Co., and later for American Crystal Sugar, Crookston. He retired in February 1993. He served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Paul and Kevin, both of Brainerd, Minn., and Tom (Lisa), St. Cloud; a daughter, Peggy Guzek, Thief River Falls; two grandchildren; brothers, Clarence (Lorraine), Thief River Falls, Joseph (Joyanne), Silver Springs, Md., and Louie (Nancy), Detroit Lakes, Minn.; and sisters, Rosemary Stuckey, Crookston, and Jeanette Guzek, Coon Rapids, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Red Lake Falls.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Petterson Funeral Home, Red Lake Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Arthur Van Metre

MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- Arthur Van Metre, 87, Mahnomen, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, in Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.

Arthur Van Metre was born Jan. 27, 1912, in Iron Mountain, Mich. He lived in an orphanage until being adopted by John and Victoreene Van Meter are the age of 4. They moved to Mahnomen, where he graduated from high school in 1929. He owned a tailor shop in Mahnomen. He married Evelina Turnlund on July 19, 1934, in Mahnomen. They purchased the Corner Cafe, which they operated until 1971. Evelina Van Metre died in 1993. He also served during World War II. He was a charter member of Mahnomen Country Club.

He is survived by nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an adoptive sister, Edna Purvin.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Circles of Faith United Church of Christ, Waubun, Minn.

Visitation: 6 to 9 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Riverside Memorial Park, Mahnomen.

Military rites: Mahnomen American Legion Isaacson-Bjorge Post #31.

William 'Bill' Dalquist

WARREN, Minn. -- William "Bill" Dalquist, 46, McGregor, Minn., formerly of Warren, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, at home.

William J. Dalquist was born July 23, 1952, the son of Clarence and Mildred (Carlson) Dalquist, in Warren, where he graduated from high school. He joined the U.S. Army, and served duty in the Vietnam War. After his discharge, he moved to Minneapolis and attended University of Minnesota, where he received a degree in civil engineering. He worked as a civil engineer and then went into the radio broadcasting business. He had worked in radio over 20 years, most recently for KKIN Radio, Aitkin, Minn., as program director.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; a son, Dillon, McGregor; a daughter, Stacey Dalquist, Fargo; a granddaughter; brothers, Richard, Fergus Falls, Minn., Don Evjen, Indianapolis, and Paul Evjen, Jamestown, N.D.; and a sister, Kathy Wess, in Texas.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Quanrud-DuBore Funeral Home, Warren.

Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Warren.

John Swanson

HALLOCK, Minn. -- John Swanson, 73, Hallock, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, in Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center, Hallock.

John Leonard Swanson was born March 27, 1925, the son of John and Anna (Younggren) Swanson, in Hallock, where he graduated from high school in 1943. He served in the U.S. Air Force from July 1943 to March 1946. He then returned home and graduated from Macalester College in 1949. He married Gloria Borseth on June 1, 1957, in Minneapolis. They lived in Hallock, where he managed the Farmers Store until 1992. He continued working at the store following retirement.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Thomas (Maureen), Hallock; a daughter, Ann (Jay) Sommer, Walker, Minn.; four grandchildren; sisters, Jean Swanson, Duluth, and Harriet Washburn, Stockton, Calif.; five sisters-in-law; and two brothers-in-law.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, First Presbyterian Church, Hallock.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery.

Mabel Johnson

GOODRIDGE, Minn. -- Mabel Johnson, 92, Goodridge, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, in Oakland Park Nursing Home, Thief River Falls, where she had lived since 1993.

Mabel Graff was born Nov. 21, 1905, the daughter of John and Secilia Graff, in Moylan Township, Marshall County, Minn. She graduated from Goodridge High School in 1923. She completed her teacher's training and taught for a few years in Goodridge. She married Albert Johnson on May 19, 1926, in Mavie, Minn. They farmed in Grand Plain Township, Marshall County. Albert Johnson died in 1972.

She is survived by children, Florence (Irving) Easthouse, Donald, Leon (Naomi) and Eldon, all of Goodridge, Everett (Linda), Cold Spring, Minn., and Avis (Rodney) Byklum, Grygla, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandson; a great-granddaughter; brothers, John, Ed and Fred; and sisters, Emma Swenson, Liefe Quam and Lillian Taylor.

Services: 4 p.m. Friday, Faith Lutheran Church, Goodridge.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Germantown Cemetery, Grand Plain Township, Marshall County.

Amy L. Ryant

MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- Amy L. Ryant, 74, Mahnomen, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at Mahnomen Health Center.

Amy L. Trusty was born June 27, 1924, the daughter of Amos and Anna (Drayton) Trusty, in Tuttle, N.D., where she attended school. She moved to Lodi, Calif., where she graduated from high school. She attended Aakers Business College, Grand Forks, where she studied bookkeeping. She married Stanley Ryant on Sept. 5, 1953, in Mahnomen. They lived in Mahnomen, where she did day care and worked at the Mahnomen School. Stanley Ryant died in 1989.

She is survived by a daughter, Adelle (James) DeVries, Bejou, Minn.; sons, Roger (Robin), Crystal, Minn., and Doug (Julie), Mahnomen; 10 grandchildren; and brothers, Lynn (Ilene), Bismarck, Floyd "Chuck" (Lillian), Waubun, Minn., and Donald (Gail), Hinkley, Minn.

She was preceded in death by two brothers; and two sisters.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Circles of Faith United Church of Christ, Waubun.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Burnside Funeral Home, Mahnomen.

Burial: Bohemian Cemetery, Mahnomen. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society.

Lisa Madsen

CLEARBROOK, Minn. -- Lisa Madsen, 32, Clearbrook, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1998, of an aneurysm at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Lisa Swanson was born June 19, 1966, the daughter of Ordean and Leone Swanson, in Fosston, Minn. She attended school in Clearbrook, graduating in 1984. She graduated from Bemidji Technical College and worked as a legal secretary for Woodke Law Office, Bemidji. She married Darren Madsen on Aug. 23, 1986, in Clearbrook. They lived in Minneapolis until moving to Greenwood Township, Clearwater County, Minn.

She is survived by her husband; her parents, Leonard, Minn.; and sisters, Nancy Ettish (Rick Vyskocil), Perham, Minn., and Susan Duquette, Bagley, Minn.;

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Tom and Petra Swanson and Oliver and Esther Walberg.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Clearbrook.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. family service, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley.

Burial: Clover Cemetery, Leonard, Minn.

Flora Wallin

BAGLEY, Minn. -- Flora Wallin, 88, Bagley, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, at Greensview Health Care Center, Bagley.

Flora Farr was born April 3, 1910, the daughter of Vernon and Flora Myrtle (Bovee) Farr, in Mallard, Minn. She was adopted by Maude and Arthur Ames after her mother died. She married Roy Wallin on Nov. 2, 1934, in Minneapolis. She worked at Itasca State Park as a cook. They also farmed near Shevlin, N.D. Roy Wallin died Dec. 7, 1994.

She is survived by daughters, Joanne Wallin, Shevlin, and Ena Loy (Jim) Sushak, Bemidji; a son, Forrest (Linda), Shevlin; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; half sisters, Jean Miller, Minneapolis, and Marge (Dick) Alfelby, Mesa, Ariz.; and a brother, Vernon Jr. Farr, Colorado Springs, Colo.

She was preceded in death by six brothers; and a sister.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Sell Lake Lutheran Church, Shevlin.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Sell Lake Lutheran Cemetery.

Ralph Prochazka

BAGLEY, Minn. -- Ralph Prochazka, 84, Bagley, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, in Hanson's Countryside Rest Home, Bagley.

Ralph Prochazka was born Aug. 6, 1914, the son of Anthony and Emma Prochazka, in Cessford, Alta. He moved with his family at the age of 6 to the United States. They moved to Alida, Minn., where he worked on the family farm. He entered the Civilian Conservation Corps and then the U.S. Army. He lived and worked in Minneapolis. He bought property in Itasca State Park, Minn., and lived there. He entered Hanson's Countryside Rest Home in September 1998.

He is survived by a sister, Evelyn Thorson, Coon Rapids, Minn.; and brothers, Joseph, of New Jersey, Frank, Moundsview, Minn., and William "Bill," Blaine, Minn.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Slyngstad.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley.

Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.

Burial: Sell Lake Lutheran Cemetery, Shevlin, Minn.
