Richard W. Sporlein

WILLIAMS, Minn. -- Richard W. Sporlein, 60, Williams, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, in Lakewood Health Center, Baudette, Minn.

Richard William Sporlein was born Feb. 23, 1938, the son of Walter and Lena (Schneider) Sporlein, in Minneapolis, where he graduated from high school in 1956. He joined the U.S. Navy and served until 1958. He returned to Minneapolis and worked for United Van Lines as a trucker. He married Janette Sowaba in 1960. He married Marjie Albrecht on Nov. 29, 1975, in Minneapolis. In 1976, they moved to Zippel Township, Lake of the Woods County, Minn. He worked for Marvin Windows out of Warroad, Minn.

He is survived by sons, Michael (Tina) and Theodore (Nancy), both of Minneapolis; a daughter, Jean Sporlein, Minneapolis; a stepdaughter, Susan (Jamey) Gunderson, Trail, Minn.; five grandchildren; brothers, Thomas and Michael (Sheila), both of Minneapolis; and sisters, Audrey (Frank) Hickey, Carson City, Nev., Delphine Lieske, Colbert, Wash., and Bernadine Mateyka, Darlene Schroedl, Donna Sporlein, Betty (James) Hocker, and Mary (Douglas) Thoms, all of Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Walter and Ambrose.

Services: 7 p.m. Wednesday, Helgeson Funeral Home, Baudette.

Burial: 1: 15 p.m. Friday, Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Raymond Johnson

HALLOCK, Minn. -- Raymond Johnson, 81, Hallock, formerly of Lake Bronson, Minn., died Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, in Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center, Hallock.

Raymond Johnson was born Feb. 16, 1917, the son of Mandie and Ida (Peterson) Johnson, in Jupiter Township, Kittson County, Minn., where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received a Purple Heart. He married Evelyn Victoria Johnson on June 8, 1947, in Lake Bronson. They lived and farmed in Jupiter Township. They retired from farming in 1982. They moved into Hallock in 1996.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Bonnie Rae (Reuben) Gordon, Climax, Minn., and Hope Ann (Dwight) Scoles, Apple Valley, Minn.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Morris (Phyllis) Johnson, Hallock.

He was preceded in death by sons, Loren and Curtis; and a sister, Edna.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday in Community Covenant Church, Lake Bronson.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Hughes Funeral Home, Hallock.

Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Lake Bronson.

Allen C. Harren

BADGER, Minn. -- Allen C. Harren, 51, Badger, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, in Roseau (Minn.) Area Hospital.

Allen Clifford Harren was born Sept. 29, 1947, the son of Mark and Anna Marie (Haas) Harren, in Germany. He moved to Sherman, Texas, where he attended school. He graduated from high school in Dallas. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He married Kathy Berger on May 2, 1970, in Dallas. They lived in Garland, Texas for a year and moved to Roseau. He worked at the Town and Country as a meat cutter. In 1984, they moved to Badger, Minn., where he worked at Jubilee Foods, Roseau, and Pete's Hartz, Badger, as a butcher.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Chris, Badger, and Vance, Grand Forks; daughters, Jeri (Russell) Boyer, Malung, Minn., and Jennifer (Jason) Tangen, Roseau; two grandchildren; sisters, Barbara Wilson, Wampum, Pa.; a half sister, Annette Scott, Louisville, Ky.; and a half brother, Nick, Louisville.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday in Moe Lutheran Church, Roseau.

Visitation: Noon to 7 p.m. today, with a 5 p.m. prayer service in Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Roseau, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Hope Cemetery, Roseau.

Margaret P. Brown

BAUDETTE, Minn. -- Margaret P. Brown, 89, Baudette, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, in Lakewood Care Center, Baudette, where she had lived since June 1998.

Margaret Pauline Simon was born April 11, 1909, the daughter of Ernest and Alma (Erwin) Simon, in Paris, Mo. She moved with her family to Ida Grove, Iowa, where she graduated from high school in 1926. She married Monroe Brown on April 5, 1927, in Ida Grove. In 1932, they moved to a farm in Potamo Township, Lake of Woods County, Minn., near Graceton, Minn. In the early 1970s, they sold the farm. Monroe Brown died in 1976. She moved to Williams, Minn., in 1990. In 1996, she moved to Baudette.

She is survived by daughters, Romona (James) Grugal, Wannaska, Minn., Edith (Bruce) Hackman, Sulphur Springs, Ark., LaRita Searles, Newport, Minn., Winona (Earl) Hanson, Redding, Calif., and Wanita (Donald Jr.) Huerd, Williams; sons, Monroe Ross (Shelley), Newbury, Mass., Marty Ray (Josie), Longmont, Colo., and Stanley (Dorothy) Leesville, La.; 39 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Joseph, Pella, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Janet Brown, Sauk City, Wis.; and a sister-in-law, Eleanor Simon, Omaha, Neb.

She was preceded in death by sons, Jacob and Barton; sisters, Lucille Brodrick and Wanita Gal; and brothers, Ralph and William.

Services: 2 p.m. today in Pilgrim Congregational Church, Williams.

Burial: Graceton Cemetery.

Frances M. Rioux

BAUDETTE, Minn. -- Frances M. Rioux, 85, Baudette, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in Lakewood Health Center, Baudette.

Frances Mildred Edwards was born Aug. 11, 1913, the daughter of Byron and Olive (Blake) Edwards, in Hubbard County, Minn. She grew up near Bemidji. She married Howard Rioux on Feb. 14, 1931, in Bemidji. In 1936, they moved to a farm in Swiftwater Township, Lake of the Wood County, Minn., near Baudette. Howard Rioux died in 1976. She moved into Baudette. She moved to Lakewood Care Center a year ago.

She is survived by a daughter, Elvira (John) Baker, Cherryville, N.C.; sons, John (Eileen), Mount Iron, Minn., Kent (Loretta) and Kerry (Yvonne), both of Baudette, Richard, Elk River, Minn., Virgil (Elsie) Red Lodge, Mont., and Dwight (Patricia), Missoula, Mont.; 22 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Muriel Schler, Bemidji, Irma Campbell, Auburn, Wash., and Elizabeth Jane (Osborn) Arnes, Chicago.

She was preceded in death by sons, Keith and Dawn.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday in First Lutheran Church, Baudette.

Visitation: 6: 30 to 8: 30 p.m. today in Helgeson Funeral Home, Baudette, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Elm Park Cemetery, Baudette.

Frances L. Knoll

STEPHEN, Minn. -- Frances L. Knoll, 85, Stephen, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, in Good Samaritan Center, Warren, Minn.

Frances McGlynn was born Dec. 3, 1913, the daughter of William John and Loretta McGlynn, in Fork Township, Marshall County, Minn., near Stephen. She graduated from high school in Stephen in 1931. She married Henry John Knoll on June 1, 1937, in Stephen. They farmed in the Stephen area from 1937 to 1963. Henry Knoll died in July 1969.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Jane Dufault, Fargo; sons, Robert (Karen), Minneapolis, Allan (Sandra) and Patric (Linette), both of Fargo, Wayne (Anita), Stephen, Michael (Malva), Albuquerque, and Bradley (Diane), Madison, Wis.; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Madonna (Leonard) Riopelle, Argyle, Minn.

She was preceded in death by a son, James; a grandson; brothers, Howard, Patrick and Jack; and a sister, Marion.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday in St. Stephen Catholic Church.

Visitation: 5 to 6: 30 p.m. today, with a 6 p.m. prayer service in the church.

Burial: St. Stephen Cemetery (Adamson-Austin, Stephen).

Genevieve Johnson

BAGLEY, Minn. -- Genevieve Johnson, 97, Bagley, formerly of East Grand Forks, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in Greensview Health Care Center, Bagley.

Genevieve Jones was born Sept. 16, 1901, the daughter of G.P. and Minnie (Pennie) Jones, in Grey Eagle, Minn. In 1905, she moved with her family to Bagley, where she graduated from high school in 1921. She attended Normal Training School and taught in several places including Leonard, Bird Island, Bagley, Pine Island, and LaPorte, Minn. She married Oscar Johnson on July 3, 1936, in Anoka, Minn. She taught in East Grand Forks. Oscar Johnson died in 1984. After the Flood of 1997, she moved to Bagley.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, W.W.; and sisters, Lucille King and Jean Wiltse.

Services: 11 a.m. today in Bagley City Cemetery and 7 p.m. Thursday in Stennes Funeral Home, East Grand Forks, under the auspices of Red River Chapter 2226 O.E.S., East Grand Forks .

Burial: Bagley City Cemetery (Cease, Bagley).

Ruben W. Nyland

STEPHEN, Minn. -- Ruben W. Nyland, 90, Stephen, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, in the North Valley Health Center, Warren, Minn.

Ruben Nyland was born Oct. 5, 1907, the son of A.J. and Ellen (Pearson) Nyland, in Stephen, where he graduated from high school in 1928. He served in the U.S. Army from April 30, 1942 to Dec. 19, 1945. He married Irene Bryan on Jan. 22, 1971. She died Dec. 28, 1984. He was the superintendent of the Stephen Cemetery for 35 years. He also did shoe repair.

He is survived by a sister-in-law, Lucille Nyland.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Elvira Riley; and brothers, Cliff Sr., Roy and Gordon.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, First Lutheran Church, Stephen.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 6: 30 p.m. prayer service, and before services Monday, all in the church.

Burial: Stephen Cemetery (Quanrud-DuBore, Warren, Minn.).

Meta Olslund

BELTRAMI, Minn. -- Meta Olslund, 92, Beltrami, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at home.

Meta Viola Broden was born June 30, 1906, the daughter of Otius and Emilia (Thorginson) Broden, in Fertile, Minn., where she attended school. She did housekeeping for area families. She married Elmer James Olslund on June 18, 1944, in Fertile. They lived and farmed in Reis Township, Polk County, Minn., retiring in 1964, and moving to Beltrami. Elmer Olslund died March 15, 1981.

She is survived by sons, Jim, Beltrami, and Tom (Sharon) Crookston; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Broden, Fertile; five grandchildren; and five great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Broden; a brother, Gerald; and sisters, Eva Moen, Ona Broden, and Agnes Tuallerud.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Beltrami United Methodist Church.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Lone-Star Cemetery, Beltrami.

Wallace Muhonen

SHELLY, Minn. -- Wallace Muhonen, 68, Shelly, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, in the Hillsboro (N.D.) Medical Center.

Wallace Duane Muhonen was born April 10, 1930, the son of Walter and Alma (Skjervem) Muhonen, in Whitman, N.D. He attended school in Ada, Minn. In 1945 he moved to Shelly with his mother and step father, Sam Hanson. He graduated from Climax High School in 1948. He married Elizabeth Grosfield on July 14, 1951, in Santa Marie, Calif. He served in the U.S. Army. He was discharged in 1953. They moved to Shelly, where they have lived since. He worked as a plasterer for several area contractors.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Anthony, Moorhead, Mark (Renee), Fargo, Wallace "Billy" (Mary Anne) and Kevin (Jennifer), both of West Fargo; daughters, Elisa "Lisa" (Tomas) Huseby, Warroad, Minn., and Mary Beth (Gregg) Gunderson, Fargo; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter; his parents; his step father; and a sister, Mary Ramberg.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Shelly Marsh River Lutheran Church, Shelly.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 6: 30 p.m. prayer service, in Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad, Minn.

Burial: Shelly Cemetery.

Beatrice Boyum

GREENBUSH, Minn. -- Beatrice Boyum, 78, Greenbush, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.

Beatrice Sylvia Larson was born March 10, 1920, the daughter of L.M. and Gunda (Moe) Larson in Stephen, Minn. She grew up in the Holt Community, Minn. She graduated from high school in Thief River Falls, in 1938. She attended teachers training at Bemidji State University. She taught school in Wannaska, Minn., Newfolden, Minn., and Gatzke, Minn. She married Kenneth Boyum on June 20, 1945, in Holt. They lived in Barnet Township, Roseau County, Minn. She worked at the Greenbush Public School from 1967 until retiring in 1995.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Kathryn Davis, Thief River Falls, Bonny (Richard) Bothum, and Becky (Robert) Kalinowski, both of Karlstad, Minn.; a son Jeff (Kelly) Slominski, East Grand Forks; 10 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; brothers, Orville (Yvonne), Holt and Donald (Betty), Carrington, N.D.; sisters, Evelyn (William) Owen, Columbus, Ohio and Dorothy (Rev. Conrad) Cornelieus, Spencer, N.C.; and a sister-in-law, Lois Larson, Thief River Falls.

She was preceded in death by a son in infancy; and a brother, Lowell.

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Bethel Lutheran Church, Greenbush.

Visitation: After 5 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Collins Funeral Chapel, Greenbush, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Greenbush.
