Melvin Stene
ADA, Minn. -- Melvin Stene, 89, Detroit Lakes, Minn., formerly of Ada, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, in Whispering Pines - Yodeling Spruce Ranch, Detroit Lakes, where he had lived for the past two years.
Melvin August Stene was born June 4, 1909, the son of Osbjorn and Martina Stene, in Ada. She married Florence Habedank on April 17, 1938. They farmed near Lockhart, Minn., from 1942 until moving to Ada in 1984. Florence Stene died in 1996.
He is survived by sons, Howard, Taft, Calif., and Donald (Penny), Detroit Lakes; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a brother, David, Twin Valley, Minn.
He was preceded in death by a son, Merlyn; a sister, Myrtle Boyd; and brothers, Anton, Lars, Martin, and Alfred.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Zion Lutheran Church, Ada.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Ada Municipal Cemetery (Fredrikson, Ada).
Reuben Hatleberg
McINTOSH, Minn. -- Reuben Hatleberg, 67, McIntosh, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, in McIntosh Manor Nursing Home, where he had been residing since 1993.
Reuben Severt Hatleberg was born March 22, 1931, the son of Henry and Ingeborg (Skore) Hatleberg, in Winger, Minn., where he attended school. He moved with his family near Fosston, Minn., and helped on his uncle's farm. He later worked on the Floyd Balstad Farm.
He is survived by sisters, Helen Berg, Bemidji, Grace Tellefsen, New Berlin, Wis., and Lilly Keprois, Pine River, Minn.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Calvary Lutheran Church, Winger.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Calvary Lutheran Cemetery, Winger (Carlin-Hoialmen, Fosston).
Bernice McCollum
BEJOU, Minn. -- Bernice McCollum, 69, Bejou, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in Dakota Heartland Hospital, Fargo.
Bernice Halland was born Dec. 4, 1929, the daughter of Adolph and Gina (Ramberg) Halland, in Waukon Township, Norman County, Minn. She graduated from high school in Gary, Minn., in 1948. She worked for the Gish Ice Cream Store, Mahnomen, Minn., J.C. Penney's, Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Red Owl grocery store, Crookston. She married Jack McCollum on Nov. 25, 1950, in Rindal, Minn. They lived and farmed near Bejou. She worked for Edna's Meat Market, which later became Miller's Fairway Foods, Mahnomen. She later owned McCollum's Hartz Store, Bejou. She worked for Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen. She was the manager for the Bejou Co-op store. She also worked as the head housekeeper at Stardust Suites Motel, Mahnomen. She retired in 1998.
She is survived by sons, Larry (Sara), Shelly, Minn., and Rodney (Susan), Ada, Minn.; daughters, JoAnn (Michael) Thieling and Pamela (Michael) Miller, both of Ramsey, Minn., Sandra (Peter) Holmvik, Bejou, and Denise (Lee Ludwig) Dickens, Fargo; 19 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Lloyd (Evie Anderson), Philip (Gloria) and Dennis (Diane), all of Gary, and Lester (Darlene), Bejou; sisters, Ardelle (Burton) Thronson, Gary, and Doris (Al) Jaeger, Twin Valley, Minn.; and sisters-in-law, Jean Halland, Gary, and Violet Halland, Bejou.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Stanley and Millard; and a sister-in-law, Jeanette Halland.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bejou.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen.
Burial: Bejou City Cemetery.
Ceasar M. Estling
WARROAD, Minn. -- Ceasar M. Estling, 93, Warroad, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, in Warroad Care Center.
Ceasar M. Estling was born May 2, 1905, the son of Joe and Sena (Agre) Estling, in Boyd, Minn. He lived in South Dakota, Montevideo, Minn., and Roseau County, Minn. He returned to Montevideo, where he graduated from high school. He graduated from St. Olaf College with a degree in science. He worked as a chemist in a quality control laboratory at Pillsbury Mills, Minneapolis. He later worked at a mill in Springfield, Ill.. He married Marie Lauterbauch on March 9, 1947, in Springfield. They moved to the Roosevelt area in Roseau County, where they had a mink ranch and farmed.
He is survived by his wife; sisters, Alice Grove and Evelyn Arnesen, both of Roosevelt; and a brother, Luther, Roosevelt.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Adelyne; and brothers, Jay Sr. and Ole "Bud."
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Mount Carmel Lutheran Church, Roosevelt.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Warroad, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
Curtis Knutson
STEPHEN, Minn. -- Curtis Knutson, 44, Stephen, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in North Valley Health Center, Warren, Minn.
Curtis Knutson was born Dec. 15, 1954, the son of Reuben and Alice (Nelson) Knutson, in Karlstad, Minn. He graduated from high school in Stephen. He attended the Area Vocational Technical Institute in Thief River Falls. He married Karen Deschene on May 14, 1983, in Argyle, Minn. They lived in Stephen, where he worked for the Farmers Grain Elevator.
He is survived by his wife; children; Jason and Michaela, both at home; his mother, Stephen; and a sister, LaVonne Mimberg, Brooklyn, N.Y..
He was preceded in death by his father.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, St. Stephen Catholic Church, Stephen.
Visitation: After 5 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services, all in the church.
Burial: St. Stephen Cemetery (Quanrud-DuBore, Warren).
Lee Fawver
GONVICK, Minn. -- Lee Fawver, 30, Ramsey, Minn., formerly of Gonvick, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, from the result of a snowmobile accident near Gonvick.
Lee Byron Fawver was born May 10, 1968, the son of Jay and Joyce (Nichols) Fawver, Austin, Minn. He moved with his family to Hayfield, Minn., and later to Gonvick, where he graduated from high school in 1986. He attended the University of Minnesota-Crookston for business. He spent two summers in Georgia working with his brother, Scott. He worked for Best Buy, Minneapolis. He married Michele Olson on June 24, 1989, in Clearbrook. He was the assistant manager at Tires Plus, Minneapolis. He was the store manager at Tires Plus, Plymouth, Minn. He later worked for Aconite Pipeline. In 1994, they purchased a farm near Gonvick.
He is survived by his wife, Ramsey; his parents; brothers, Scott, Gonvick, and Ryan (Karissa), Plainview, Minn.; a sister, Karrin (Robert), Ramsey; sisters-in-law, Shirly (Jim), East Grand Forks, Renie (Doug) and Tammy (Rod), both of Ada, Minn., Vickie (Lyle), Fertile, Minn., and Marilyn (Steve), Crookston; and grandmothers, Madeline Fawver, Austin, and Blanche Nichols, Blooming Prairie, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Byron Nichols and Myron Fawver.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, First Baptist Church, Clearbrook, Minn.
Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Elim Lutheran Cemetery, Clearbrook.
Mabel Hanson
FOSSTON, Minn. -- Mabel Hanson, 96, Williston, N.D., formerly of Fosston, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, in Mercy Medical Center, Williston.
Mabel Jenette Paulson was born May 3, 1902, the daughter of Martin and Andrea Paulson, in Eagle Lake Township, Otter Tail County, Minn. She moved with her family to La Crosse, Wash. She returned to Ashby, Minn., where she attended school. She married Anton Hanson on May 24, 1920, in Mahnomen, Minn. They lived in Heier Township, Mahnomen County, Minn., where they farmed for 53 years. They moved to Fosston in 1973. Anton Hanson died December 1983
She is survived by sons, Alton (Lela), Hazelton, N.D., and Vernon (Dorothy), Billings, Mont.; daughters, Maxine Duncalf, Williston, and Hazel (Dan) Johnson, Modesto, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by children; Arlene Ness and Maynard; and three grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Kingo Lutheran Church, Fosston.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, Fosston.
Burial: Kingo Lutheran Cemetery.
