Olaf Haugo

WAUBUN, Minn. -- Olaf Haugo, 87, Waubun, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at home.

Olaf Haugo was born Jan. 11, 1912, the son of Tarjei and Anne (Skjelbreid) Haugo, in Lake Mills, Iowa. In 1914, they moved to Popple Grove Township, Mahnomen County, Minn., where he attended school. He farmed in Popple Grove Township. He married Hazel Syverson on Dec. 24, 1933, in Ulen, Minn. They lived in Popple Grove Township. He retired in 1973.

He is survived by his wife; sons, David (Jean), Waubun, John (Sharon), Hudson, Wis., Olaf Jr. (Dianne), Hawley, Minn., Donald, Cannon Falls, Minn., and George (Mary), Fargo; daughters, Carole (Roger) Olsen, Moorhead, and Patricia (Blair) Wheaton, Toronto, Ont.; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Seeger, Alexandria, Minn.

He was preceded in death by a son, Allan; a daughter, Marie; eight brothers; and two sisters.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Wild Rice Lutheran Church, Twin Valley.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen.

Burial: Wild Rice Lutheran Cemetery.

Lester Nichols

BORUP, Minn. -- Lester Nichols, 89, Ulen, Minn., formerly of Borup, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, in Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen.

Lester Jerome Nichols was born April 10, 1909, the son of Orville and Clara (Jacobson) Nichols, in Borup, where he attended school. He married Doris Fevig on Sept. 26, 1937, in Ulen. They lived in Borup until 1945, when they bought a farm west of Ulen. They moved into Ulen in the mid-1990s. He worked in constructing elevators throughout Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana, and as a carpenter in the Ulen area.

He is survived by his wife; sons, LaDean (Joanne), Hawley, Minn., Vernell (Mary), Ulen, and Kendall (Monica), Climax, Minn.; a daughter, Aline (David) Fleton, Hawley; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Stanley (Doris), Irvine, Calif., and Orvind, Borup; and sisters, Dorothy (LeRoy), Dosland, Perley, Minn., and Zonie Hanson, Fargo.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, Calvary Lutheran Church, Ulen.

Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, with a 4 p.m. prayer service, Anderson Funeral Home, Twin Valley, Minn., and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Calvary Lutheran Cemetery.

Sanford 'Sandy' Goplin

WARREN, Minn. -- Sanford "Sandy" Goplin, 85, Moorhead, formerly of Warren, died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Sanford Olaus Goplin was born March 1, 1913, the son of Sam and Laura Marie (Webjornsen) Goplin, in Marsh Grove Township, Marshall County, Minn., where he attended school. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps near Ely, Minn. He married Harriet Lucille Bren on Dec. 18, 1935, in Warren. He worked for the Warren Creamery and for the Chevrolet/Minneapolis Moline dealership. In 1956, he became parts manager for Amundgaard Implement and later for Evergreen Implement. They lived in Warren until 1993, when they moved to Moorhead, where they became residents of Eventide Living Center. Harriet Goplin died Dec. 10, 1995.

He is survived by sons, Lee (Beverly), Grand Rapids, Minn., Russell (Amanda), Bemidji, Minn., and Lowell, Warren; daughters, June (Stan) Dewerff and Lana (Alan) Schoenack, both of Moorhead; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Goplin, Warren and Dorris Airhart, Driftwood, Texas; and a brother-in-law, Ray Bren, Thief River Falls.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Stella Goplin, Viola Windahl, Ella Peterson and Pearl Haugen; and a brother, Walter.

Services: 2: 30 p.m. Tuesday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Warren.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today in Quanrud-DuBore Funeral Home, Warren, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Warren.

Margaret LeDoux

RED LAKE FALLS, Minn. -- Margaret LeDoux, 72, Red Lake Falls, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, at home.

Margaret Gertrude Josephine DeHaan was born Oct. 30, 1926, the daughter of John and Gertrude (Perrin) DeHaan, in Wilhelmina, Mo. She moved with her family to Montana, where she started her education. In 1934, she moved to Red Lake Falls, where she graduated from high school in 1946. She received her teachers training in 1947. She taught in country schools. She married Luverne LeDoux on Feb. 3, 1948, in Red Lake Falls. They moved to California, where they lived before moving to several other places in the United States. They returned to Red Lake Falls in 1991. She worked for Arctic Cat, Thief River Falls, for several years.

She is survived by her husband; a son, John (Ginger), Lancaster, Minn.; daughters, Linda LeDoux, Aurora, Colo., Sue (Kim) Domier, Sioux Falls, S.D., and JoAnn LeDoux, Houston; six grandchildren; a sister, Elaine "Sis" (Deane) Boucher, Crookston; and brothers, Martin (Bernadette), Jacob Henry (Barbara) and Anthony, all of Red Lake Falls and Gerard (Betty), Thief River Falls.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Roberts; and brothers, John, Joseph and Robert.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Red Lake Falls.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, in Petterson Funeral Home, Red Lake Falls, and one hour before service in the church.

Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery, Red Lake Falls.

Stanley Bajdek

STEPHEN, Minn. -- Stanley Bajdek, 72, Stephen, died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, at home.

Stanley S. Bajdek was born May 7, 1926, the son of Stanley and Mary (Szklarski) Bajdek, in Nelson Park Township, Marshall County, Minn. He moved with his family to Augsburg Township, Marshall County, where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He farmed in Augsburg Township.

He is survived by a brother, Ted, Stephen; and sisters, Pauline Kalis, Sealy, Texas and Olga Pietruszewski, New Brighton, Minn.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Otto.

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Assumption Catholic Church, Florian, Minn.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in the church.

Burial: Church Cemetery (Adamson-Austin, Stephen).

Walter E. Ellegaard

FERTILE, Minn. -- Walter E. Ellegaard, 78, Fertile, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998, in Mission Hospital, Mission Viejo, Calif.

Walter Everett Ellegaard was born Nov. 18, 1919, the son of Andrew and Julie (Halvorson) Ellegard, in Fertile, where he attended area schools, graduating in 1939. He worked in the Fertile area. He entered the U.S. Army on June 15, 1942 and was discharged on Oct. 19, 1945. He married Carol McArthur on Dec. 12, 1947, in Polk County, Minn. They moved to Seattle, Wash., returning to Fertile in 1950. They worked for Peterson-Biddick Produce Co., Fertile. He worked for the U.S. Post Office in Fertile, as a part-time police officer. He assumed the Chief of Police position for the City of Fertile in 1961. He retired on June 28, 1985. Carol Ellegaard died Feb. 8, 1992.

He is survived by sons, Grant and Barry, both of Fertile, Eric (Joanie), Laguna Niguel, Calif., and Mark, Salol, Minn.; a daughter, Shelly (Mark) Broden, Fertile; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Elmer (Marge), Rantloul, Ill., Goodwyin (Bernice), Mesa, Ariz., and Donald (LaZona), Fertile; and a sister, Esther Tuntluff, Superior, Wis.

He was preceded in death by a son, Bruce; brothers, Wallace, Alvin and Stanley; a sister, Viola Dale; and a sister-in-law, Ethel Ellegaard.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Erikson-Vik Funeral Home, Fertile.

Burial: Pleansant Hill Cemetery, Fertile.

Sigurd 'Si' Pallum

HALSTAD, Minn. -- Sigurd "Si" Pallum, 95, Halstad, formerly of Ada, Minn., died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, in Lutheran Memorial Home, Halstad.

Sigurd Pallum was born March 27, 1903, the son of Martin and Ragna (Lindseth) Pallum, in Borup, Minn., where he attended country school. He worked as a carpenter, building homes and barns in the Borup area. In 1925, he began working for Charles Herman, who owned Ada Auto Sales in Ada, Minn. In 1932, he started the Chrysler/Plymouth Dealership in Ada. He married Lucille Smith. They lived in Ada. He continued to work in the automobile business until selling his business in 1975. He worked in car sales and training with Lee Brothers Sales and Kelly Chrysler Center, both in Ada. Lucille Pallum died in 1992. He entered the Bridges John Wimmer Nursing Home, Ada, in 1995 the moved to Twin Valley (Minn.) Lutheran Memorial Home due to the Flood of 1997. He recently moved to Halstad.

He is survived by daughters, Nancy (Paul) Christianson and Shila Schumacher, both of Fargo; step-sons, Roger (Ann) Smith, Webster City, Iowa, Rodney (Nancy) Smith, Eagen, Minn., Russell Smith, Hillsboro, N.D., and Richard (Vivian) Smith, White Bear Lake, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Gilbert, Henry and Oscar; and a sister, Arlette Rue.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Grace Lutheran Church, Ada.

Visitation: 3 to 6 p.m. today, with a 5: 30 p.m. prayer service, Fredrikson Funeral Home, Ada, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Ada City Cemetery.

Ronnie G. Hamness

STRATHCONA, Minn. -- Ronnie G. Hamness, 47, Strathcona, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at home.

Ronnie Gene Hamness was born July 27, 1951, the son of Danford Hilmer and Velma Mae (Haugtvedt) Hamness, in Greenbush. He grew up and graduated from high school in Strathcona, in 1969. He worked for Arctic Enterprises in Thief River Falls. He married Noreen Svegdahl on May 4, 1974, in Greenbush. He started a dairy and grain farm in Strathcona in 1980. He owned and operated R.H. Septic Tank Pumping.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Rory, Strathcona; and a daughter, Kjerstie (Jason) Bertilrud, Greenbush.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Grace Evangelical Church, Strathcona.

Visitation: After 3 p.m. today, with a 3 p.m. prayer service, Gieseke Funeral Chapel, Greenbush, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Strathcona.

Alvin O. Houge

HENDRUM, Minn. -- Alvin O. Houge, 84, Hendrum, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at home.

Alvin Oscar Houge was born Feb. 16, 1914, the son of Henry and Olga (Solberg) Houge, in Malta, Mont. He attended school in Walhalla, N.D., and Hanson Auto School, Fargo. He farmed in several locations in Walhalla and Portland, N.D. He moved with his parents to Hendrum in 1932 and farmed until August 1998. He married Mildred Lee on Oct. 21, 1945, in Lamoure, N.D. They made their home in Hendrum.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Larry, Hendrum; daughters, Carolyn (Lloyd) Olson, Camrose, Alta., and Susan (Jeff) Tilwick, Orlando; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hendrum.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a 6: 30 p.m. prayer service, Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad, Minn., and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, Hendrum.

Ernest G. Olson

RED LAKE FALLS, Minn. -- Ernest G. Olson, 88, Red Lake Falls, formerly of Thief River Falls, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, in Hillcrest Nursing Home, Red Lake Falls.

Ernest Garfield Olson was born April 4, 1910, the son of Theodore and Anna (Forsberg) Olson, in Kratka Township, Pennington County, Minn. He attended school in St. Hilaire, Minn. He worked on local farms. He worked construction as a cement finisher and on several bridge and dam jobs. He moved to Thief River Falls and began farming and worked with the beet production for American Crystal Sugar. He took care of his mother for many years. He worked in maintenance for Arctco in Thief River Falls. He lived in Goodridge, Minn., before moving to Fosston, Minn. He lived at Hillcrest Nursing Home for the past two years.

He is survived by a sister, Iona Sabai, Centerville, Ohio; and brothers, Amos (Aretha), Yuma, Ariz., and Rufus (Violet), Thief River Falls.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Lester and Miles.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Bethany Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bethany Cemetery, Smiley Township, Pennington County (Green, Thief River Falls).

Anna Loken

SKIME, Minn. -- Anna Loken, 79, Skime, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, in Roseau (Minn.) Area Hospital.

Anna Constance Paulson was born April 19, 1919, the daughter of Amund and Christina (Grovslin) Paulson, in Ross Township, Roseau County, Minn., where she attended school. She married Floyd Loken on Jan. 27, 1951, in Roseau. They lived in several areas in Roseau County before settling in Golden Valley Township, Roseau County. She worked for Polaris Industries. Floyd Loken died in 1982.

She is survived by sons, Forrest Tykward, Wannaska, Minn., Marvin (Gail) Sandbek, Menahga, Minn., and James, Robert, Arlan and Leland (Rhonda), all of Skime; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Martha (Ambrose) Lundgren, Roseau.

She was preceded in death by two infant children, seven brothers and a sister.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Bethesda Lutheran Church, Skime.

Visitation: Noon to 7 p.m. today, with a 6: 30 p.m. prayer service, Helgeson Funeral Home, Roseau, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bethesda Cemetery.
