Robert Yanish

BAGLEY, Minn. -- Robert Yanish, 82, Bagley, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, in Greensview Health Care Center, Bagley.

Robert Yanish was born Feb. 8, 1916, the son of Michael and Eva (Jones) Yanish, in Watkins, Minn. He moved with his family to Oriska, N.D., where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, from 1940 to 1945. He married Alice Stensgaard in 1942. They lived in Buffalo, N.D., where he had a farm implement dealership. They moved to Climax, Colo., where he was a welder for Climax Molybdenum Co. In 1956, they moved to Bear Creek Farm, Shevlin, Minn. He retired in 1983 and they moved to Bagley. He entered Greensview in 1995.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Robert (Kathy), Mahnomen, Minn.; daughters, Joan Brown, Moorhead, and Linda (David) Maschwitz, St. Paul; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sisters, Agnes Schnukloth, Buffalo, and Anne Baker Stenseng, Bagley.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.

Services: 1: 30 p.m. Monday, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bagley.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bagley.

Lorena L. Hacker

ADA, Minn. -- Lorena L. Hacker, 85, Ada, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, at Bridges Medical Services Hospital, Ada.

Lorena Laura Anna Meyen was born April 20, 1913, the daughter of John and Emma (Berndt) Meyen, in Burr, Minn. She attended school near Canby, Minn. She married Raymond Hacker on Nov. 6, 1932, in Canby. They lived in Canby until moving in 1949 to Nevis, Minn., where she worked as a cook at the Nevis school. In 1961, they moved to Siren, Wis., before moving in 1977 to Park Rapids, Minn. In 1979, she moved to Ada. Raymond Hacker died in 1980. She moved to Wimmer Nursing Home, Ada, in 1993. She moved to Lutheran Memorial Home, Twin Valley, Minn., after the Flood of 1997.

She is survived by sons, Eldon (Judy), Minneapolis, and Delmer (Hazel), Park Rapids, Minn.; daughters, Emily (Sidney) Jackson, Gary, Minn., and Elna (Arnold) Wambolt, Siren; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Elma Engel, Montevideo, Minn., and Jane (Maurice) Reinertson, Hendricks, Minn.; and a brother, Marvin (Loretta), Gary, S.D.

She was preceded in death by a son, Johann; and brothers, Fred and Johann.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Zion Lutheran Church, Ada.

Visitation: 2: 30 to 4: 30 p.m. Sunday, Fredrikson Funeral Home, Ada, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Ada Municipal Cemetery.

Ludvig Noss

TWIN VALLEY, Minn. -- Ludvig Noss, 81, Twin Valley, formerly of Gary, Minn., died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at Lutheran Memorial Nursing Home, Twin Valley, where he had lived since 1997.

Ludvig Arthur Noss was born Feb. 15, 1917, the son of Peder and Johanna (Wold) Noss, in Gary, where he attended school. He farmed with his father before joining the U.S. Navy Jan. 6, 1942. On Dec. 9, 1945, he returned home and worked on the family farm until the mid-1970s, when he moved into Gary. He worked for area farmers and American Crystal Sugar.

He is survived by brothers, Oscar (Martha), Blue Earth, Minn., and Lester (Maxine), East Grand Forks; and sisters, Bertha Moteberg and Myrtle Noss, both of St. Paul, Cora Tveit, Seattle, Ragna Heidtbrink, Yuma, Colo., and Evelyn (Fred) Michel, Kennewick, Wash.

He was preceded in death by four brothers.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Ness Lutheran Church, Gary (Anderson, Twin Valley).

Ernest Lefstrom

KARLSTAD, Minn. -- Ernest Lefstrom, 66, Karlstad, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at Karlstad Memorial Nursing Center, where he had lived since July.

Ernest Palmer Lefstrom was born Dec. 11, 1931, the son of Albert and Hilma (Larson) Lofstrom, in Strandquist, Minn., where he graduated from high school in 1949. He attended Moorhead State Teachers College and worked at Strandquist Elevator. He joined the U.S. Air Force and served for 21 years at various military bases throughout the world. He married Muriel Anderson on June 20, 1955, in Karlstad. He retired from the Air Force in April 1971. In June, they moved to Karlstad. He was a charter member of Karlstad Eagles Club. Muriel Lefstrom died Oct. 29, 1991.

He is survived by a son, Steve (Laurie), Karlstad; daughters, Denise (James) Anderson, Lake Bronson, Minn., and Jodi (Sean) Spilde, Karlstad; nine grandchildren; and sisters, Adele Daffron, Kent, Wash., Fern Wilson, Portland, Ore., and Roseline (Norman) Campbell, Seattle.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter; his parents; and brothers, Louis and Elmer.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, First Lutheran Church, Karlstad.

Visitation: After 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Collins Funeral Chapel, Karlstad, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Karlstad Cemetery.

Military Rites: Karlstad American Legion Post No. 445.

L.A. 'Barney' Ross

ROSEAU, Minn. -- L.A. "Barney" Ross, 87, Roseau, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, in Roseau Area Hospital.

L.A. Ross was born April 26, 1911, the son of Perry and Ida (Ping) Ross, in Lawton, Iowa, where he graduated from high school and attended college. He worked for Gambles Hardware. He later managed Gambles Hardware in Wadena, Minn. In 1941 he moved to Roseau, where he owned and operated the Gambles Hardware store, which later became Ross True Value. He retired in 1980.

He is survived by sons, Don (Mary) and Gary (Kathy), both of Roseau; daughters, Diane (LaVern) Korb, LeSueur, Minn., Pat (Arlie) Braunberger, Valley City, N.D., and Peggy (Carson) Hedlund, Roseau; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise; and an infant brother.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Roseau.

Prayer Service: 5 p.m. today in Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Roseau.

Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Roseau.

George Johnson

TWIN VALLEY, Minn. -- George Johnson, 92, Twin Valley, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, in the Lutheran Memorial Nursing Home, Twin Valley, where he had lived since 1994.

George C.A. Johnson was born Nov. 7, 1906, the son of Herman and Rodi (Weum) Johnson, in Lake Park, Minn. He grew up and attended school in Flom, Minn. He worked in the Flom area. He married Clara Hegreberg on June 17, 1931, in Ada, Minn. They lived in Flom until the early 1960's, when they moved to Detroit Lakes, Minn., where they owned and operated the Chile Kitchen Diner. They retired in the late 1960's. He worked for the Graystone Hotel, Detroit Lakes as a custodian until 1978. They moved to Ada, where they lived until 1994.

He is survived by his wife; sisters, Sophia Grendahl, Bosie, Idaho, Gertrude Highness, Moorhead, and Stella (George) Burlog, Grand Forks; and brothers, Mervin (Clarice), Twin Valley and Edwin (Gladys), Bosie.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Rose Stene, Mabel Severson, and infant twins.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday in Lutheran Memorial Nursing Home Chapel.

Visitation: One hour before services in the nursing home.

Burial: Aspelund Lutheran Cemetery, Flom.

Orval Salverson

ERSKINE, Minn. -- Orval Salverson, 55, Corona, Calif., formerly of Erskine, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, in Corona.

G. Orval Salverson was born Feb. 23, 1943, the son of Norman and Emma (Anderson) Salverson, in Crookston. He grew up and attended school in Erskine. He worked for Lon and David Norton on their potato farm in East Grand Forks. He married Barbara Cox on Sept. 29, 1962. They lived in Chicago, where he worked in construction. In 1966 they moved to California, where he purchased a water truck and started Salverson's Trucking business in Simi Valley. In 1975, he returned to Erskine, where he farmed. In 1978, he moved back to California, where he continued the water trucking business until the time of his death. He also worked for Wayne and Dale Sorenson, hauling beets, and he worked on the Jon Clementson farm.

He is survived by a daughter, Brenda (Jim) Taray, Meadowlands, Minn.; a son, Norman, San Diego, Calif.; two grandchildren; and brothers and sisters, Nordean (Cindy) Salverson, Janet Hoy, Allan (Kathy), all of Erskine, Ann Lorenzen, Fargo, Sherman Salverson, Moorhead, Theresa Noll (Gary), Cocoa, Fla., Evelyn (Harold) Osland, Manito, Ill., Linda Behm-Salverson and May Tice-Plante, both of Grand Forks, and Mary McEnany, Apple Valley, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Orval Duane; a sister, Irene Shear; and a brother, Edward.

Memorial Services: 11 a.m. Thursday in Grace Lutheran Church, Erskine (Carlin-Hoialmen, Erskine).

Adelia Anderson

GREENBUSH, Minn. -- Adelia Anderson, 93, Greenbush, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998, in Greenbush Nursing Home, where she had been a resident.

Adelia Hermanson was born Feb. 20, 1905, the daughter of Tron and Theodora (Lieberg) Hermanson, in Pelan, Minn., where she attended school. She graduated from high school in Lancaster, Minn., in 1923. She attended Bemidji State Teachers College. She taught school for several years. She married Edwin Anderson on Nov. 6, 1933, in Greenbush. They farmed in Deer, Lind and Dewey townships, all in Roseau County, Minn., for several years. Edwin Anderson died in 1991.

She is survived by sons, Edsel (Donna), Greenbush and Ronald (Nancy), Summerland Key, Fla.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lloyd, Karlstad, Minn.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Herman, Henry, and Oscar; and sisters, Carrie Sanner, Clara Sanner, Agnes Kruse and Anna Rice.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday in United Free Lutheran Church, Greenbush.

Visitation: After 4 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Gieseke Funeral Chapel, Greenbush, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, Greenbush.

Julie Holmquist

HALLOCK, Minn. -- Julie Holmquist, 16, Hallock, died July 29, 1998, in Hallock.

Julie Ann Holmquist was born Nov. 14, 1981, the daughter of James and Clarice (Wolf) Holmquist, in Hallock. She was a junior at Kittson Central High School, where she played on the Wolfpack varsity volleyball team. She was a member of the National Honor Society, served on the Student Council, was a past class president, worked on the annual staff and played flute in the high school band. She had worked for Margie's Cafe and the Kittson Memorial Health Care Center as a dietary aide.

She is survived by her parents, Clarice, Hallock, and James, Baudette, Minn.; sisters, Vicki Holmquist Hanson, and Tracy Holmquist, both of Thief River Falls; and grandparents, Marlow and Dorothy Wolf, Lancaster, Minn., and Norma Bengtson, Hallock.

She was preceded in death by grandfather, Vern Holmquist; and stepgrandfather, Earl Bengtson.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday in Grace Lutheran Church, Hallock

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock.

Inga Raaen

ERSKINE, Minn. -- Inga Raaen, 95, Erskine, died Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, in First Care Hospital, Fosston, Minn.

Inga Othelia Strom was born Nov. 1, 1902, the daughter of Martin and Olga Marie (Tranby) Strom, in Knute Township, Erskine. She married John Nelson on Dec. 29, 1923. They lived in Erskine. John Nelson died in 1959. She married Oscar Raaen on May 28, 1960. They lived in Erskine. Oscar Raaen died Feb. 19, 1988. She sewed for people, worked at the Ness Cafe, the Pioneer Memorial Care Center and the Hartz Store. She retired at age 62.

She is survived by a daughter, Marjorie Berger, Erskine; a step-son, Bill Raaen, Fergus Falls, Minn.; stepdaughters, Meredith Bursheim, McIntosh, Minn., and Avis Johnson, Minneapolis; four grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sisters, Ruth Strom, Erskine, and Olga Olson, Snohomish, Wash.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Agnes Vann, and Emma Howe; and a granddaughter.

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday in Dovre Free Lutheran Church, Winger, Minn.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with a 6: 30 p.m. prayer service, in Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, Erskine, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Fairview Cemetery, Erskine.

Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Neisen

MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- Elizabeth "Lizzie" Neisen, 78, Mahnomen, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999.

Elizabeth Kucera was born Oct. 1, 1920, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Mrkvicka) Kucera, in Silver Lake, Minn., where she attended school. She moved to Mahnomen in the early 1940s. She worked for Bonn's Cafe and the Red Apple Cafe. She married Leander Neisen on March 13, 1945, in Springfield, Mo. They lived in Mahnomen. Leander Neisen died in 1982.

She is survived by sons, Robert (Virginia "Ginny"), Roger (Carol), Mike (Debra) and David "Shorty," all of Mahnomen; daughters, Sister Judy Neisen, Crookston, and Carol (Rod) Farrace, Porterville, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Hausner, Mahnomen.

She was preceded in death by a son, Steven.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Mahnomen.

Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m. today, with a 4 p.m. rosary service and an 8 p.m. prayer service, all in the church.

Burial: St. Michael's Catholic Church Cemetery (Mattson, Mahnomen).
