Melvin L. Anderson

HALLOCK, Minn. -- Melvin L. Anderson, 73, Hallock, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at home.

Melvin Levin Anderson was born Oct. 5, 1925, the son of Levin and Martha (Hoglin) Anderson, in Hallock, where he attended rural school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1945, where he received several medals and ribbons including the Purple Heart. He married Frances Mathews on Nov. 5, 1949, in Warren, Minn. They lived in Thompson Township, Kittson County, Minn. He worked for the City Co-op in Hallock and for Kittson County Highway Department. He retired in 1987.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Elaine (Gary) Koop, Becky (Duane) Lyberg and Roxanne (Terry) Ogorek, all of Hallock; and Jean (Tom) Wilebski, Mosinee, Wis.; a son, Lee (Karen), Frisco, Texas; 12 grandchildren; brothers, Linden, Hallock, Jim (Joan), San Jose, Calif., and Ron (Judy), Moorhead; sisters, Leona (Walter) Larson and Janice (Kenneth) Anderson, both of Hallock; and a brother-in-law, Kermit Erickson, Rowland Heights, Calif.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother; and a sister, Marlyce.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday in Grace Lutheran Church, Hallock.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. today, with an 8: 30 p.m. prayer service, Hughes Funeral Home, Hallock.

Evelyn Tibbetts

BAGLEY, Minn. -- Evelyn Tibbetts, 81, Northfield, Minn., formerly of Bagley, died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, in Northfield Hospital.

Evelyn Sauer was born Aug. 18, 1917, the daughter of Walter and Luella (Rosenquist) Sauer, in Glyndon, Minn. She moved with her family to Bagley, where she graduated from high school. She married Alvah "Ted" Tibbetts on March 7, 1936, in Bagley. They farmed south of Bagley until moving into Bagley in 1955. She worked as a cook for the Bagley Hospital, and owned Evy's Cafe in Bagley. They moved to Albert Lea, Minn., in 1983. Alvah Tibbetts died Sept. 6, 1994. She had resided in Northfield for the past five years.

She is survived by daughters, Laurel (Joe) Newsome, of North Carolina; Jan (Ron) Olson, of Texas, Lois Boushee, of Florida, and Becky (Dave) Schlegel, Fairbault, Minn.; sons, Rodney (Kathy), Hawley, Minn., and David (Sue), Aurora, Minn.; and sisters, Mayme Myers, Bagley, Lorraine Buck, Wadena, Minn., Marrian Berquist, Fairbault, Claris Ritke, Motley, Minn., and Margie Josephson, Red Lake Falls, Minn.

She was preceded in death by sons, John and Ivan; two brothers; and a sister.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday in Faith Lutheran Church, Bagley.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bagley City Cemetery (Cease, Bagley).

Verle Goodwin

MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- Verle Goodwin, 81, Mahnomen, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, in Cambridge (Minn.) Medical Center.

Verle Turner was born March 20, 1917, the daughter of Martin and Sarah (Mitchell) Oppegard, in Lengby, Minn. She was adopted by John and Florence Turner. She attended school in Lengby, White Earth, Minn., and Flandreau, S.D. She married Albert Goodwin Sr., on Sept. 12, 1936, in Mahnomen. They lived in Beaulieu, Minn., before moving to Nett Lake, Minn. They lived in several communities in Minnesota, North Dakota, Kansas, Colorado, Washington and Oregon. They retired to Bagley, Minn., and later resided in Bemidji. She entered the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home in 1995 and recently moved to the Cambridge Nursing Home. Albert Goodwin Sr., died Oct. 22, 1998.

She is survived by sons, Albert Jr. (Ramona), Waubun, Minn., Bruce (Wanda), Andover, Minn., David (Shelly), Blaine, Minn., and Mark, Minneapolis; daughters, Marlys (LeRoy) Bjergo, Anoka, Minn., and Nancy Pemberton, New Brighton, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; an adoptive brother, Bob Turner, Ventura, Calif.; and adoptive sisters, Violet Howe, Spokane, Wash., and Verna Blackman, Barbara Strassburg and June Shinkurt, Bremerton, Wash.

She was preceded in death by sons, Raymond and Jay; a daughter, Mary Kay; two grandsons; five birth sisters; four birth brothers; an adoptive sister; and two adoptive brothers.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday in St. Anne's Catholic Church, Naytahwaush, Minn.

Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. today, with a 4 p.m. prayer service, Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Anne's Catholic Cemetery.

James Carl

STEPHEN, Minn. -- James Carl, 78, formerly of Stephen, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, in Good Samaritan Center, Warren, Minn., where he had lived since June 1996.

James J. Carl was born April 18, 1920, the son of William "Bill" and Annie Carl, in Stephen, where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Audrey Rasmussen on Nov. 20, 1949, in Minneapolis. They lived in Stephen, where he worked on area farms and did janitorial work. Audrey Carl died Jan. 20, 1998.

He is survived by a daughter, Peggy Jo (Gilbert) Ziemer, Cedar Rapids, Minn.; a son, Donald, Roseau; two grandsons; a brother, Bill (Nona), Stephen; a half sister, Eleanor Warnick, Minneapolis; and a half brother, John Laine, Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, First Lutheran Church, Stephen.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Stephen City Cemetery (Adamson-Austin, Stephen).

Orlean Halvorson

TWIN VALLEY, Minn. -- Orlean Halvorson, 86, Fargo, formerly of Twin Valley, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, in Dakota Heartland Hospital, Fargo.

Orlean Halvorson was born Nov. 18, 1912, the son of Ole and Gyta Halvorson, in Hazel, Minn. He moved with his family to Ulen, Minn., and later to Twin Valley. He operated a dray line in Twin Valley. He married Lorraine Peterson on Sept. 18, 1932, in Ulen. In 1952 they moved to Fargo, where he worked as a carpenter and building contractor until his retirement at the age of 65. Lorraine Halvorson died Jan. 7, 1998.

He is survived by sons, David (Lenora) and Gerald (Mary Ann), both of Fargo; daughters, Elaine (Milan) Bergson, Arla Hacker and Judy (Duane) Hagen, all of Fargo, and Collean (Phillip) Monson, Gardner, N.D.; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Eldon and Leo, both of Twin Valley.

He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Messiah Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: 2 p.m. Saturday, Calvary Lutheran Cemetery, Ulen.

Adolphus O. 'Smitty' Smith

MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- Adolphus O. "Smitty" Smith, 70, Mahnomen, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at home.

Adolphus O. Smith was born Dec. 9, 1928, the son of Adolphus Sr. and Grace Mae (Bastian) Smith, in Peoria, Ill., where he graduated from high school. He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served for 22 years He was involved in Vietnam and the Korean Conflict and retired in 1967. He moved to Peoria, where he managed a bar. He moved to Mahnomen, where he was a manager for American Legion Club and later worked for the City of Mahnomen, Cenex, Mahnomen Lumber and White Earth (Minn.) Garment Factory. He retired in 1990.

He is survived by a daughter, Tiffany Smith, Winger, Minn.; sisters, Bessie Hittle, Peoria, Mary LeFevre, Buckeye Lake, Ohio, Edith Rankin, Perkin, Ill., and Dorothy Bertels, Largo, Fla.; and brothers, John "Peck" Smith and Elmer Smith, both of Peoria, and William Murray, Palo Alto, Calif.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Woodward, Betty Gorman and Judith Smith; and brothers, Harold Matthews and Robert Smith.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Burnside Funeral Home, Mahnomen.

Visitation: 5 to 9 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, and before services Saturday in the funeral home.

Burial: Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Ramona R. 'Dollie' Shimpa

FISHER, Minn. -- Ramona R. "Dollie" Shimpa, 52, Fisher, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, in Altru Hospital Grand Forks.

Ramona R. Davis was born Sept. 13, 1946, the daughter of Ernest and Alma (Johnson) Davis in Hallock, Minn. She moved with her family to Warren, Minn., where she attended school. She lived in Grand Forks and later in Crookston. She married Julius "Jib" Shimpa on March 15, 1963 in Crookston, where they lived until 1977, when they moved to Fisher. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Renae (Dan) Sistad, Fosston, Minn., Julie (George) Gund, Fisher, and Joy (Jeff) Thomas, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; a son, Robert (Margaret), Hutchinson, Minn.; eight grandchildren; her mother, Crookston; and a sister, Rosemary (Gary) Gruhot, Crookston.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Chapel, Crookston.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

Burial: Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.

Elvira 'Cookie' Thompson

HALSTAD, Minn. -- Elvira "Cookie" Thompson, 89, Halstad, died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, in the Lutheran Memorial Home, Halstad.

Elvira Paulsrud was born Oct. 26, 1908, the daughter of Hans and Lisa (Ueland) Paulsrud, in Shelly Township, Norman County, Minn. She attended school near Shelly, Minn. She did domestic work for area families. She married Leonard Thompson on Nov. 7, 1931, in Halstad. They lived near Halstad until moving into Halstad in 1944. She worked as a cook at the Halstad Cafe and at the Halstad Bakery until her retirement in the early 1970s. Leonard Thompson died in 1971. She moved to the Halstad Lutheran Memorial Home in 1995.

She is survived by daughters, Geraine Marquardt, Minneapolis and Beverly (Orlow) Nokken, Moorhead; sons, Donald (Jane), Mahnomen, Minn., Gene (Patricia), Halstad, and Arlen (Judi), Othello, Wash.; 19 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Eleanor; sisters, Annette Paulsrud, Alma Johnson and Irene Thompson; and brothers, Henry, Selmer and Edwin.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Halstad Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Augustana Lutheran Cemetery, Halstad.

Martin Benson

ERSKINE, Minn. -- Martin Benson, 97, Erskine, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at home.

Martin Bernt Benson was born March 21, 1901, the son of Bernt and Gunhild (Larson) Benson, in Erskine, where he graduated from high school in 1921. He married Marie Gunderson on July 28, 1922, in Red Lake Falls, Minn. They farmed on the home farm. Marie Benson died Jan. 18, 1975. He continued to live on the farm.

He is survived by two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Norman (Sally), Fairbanks, Ark.; and sisters-in-law, Ina Mosser, McIntosh, Minn., Edna Benson, Erskine, and Juanita Benson, Salem, Ore.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Margie Ione Benson; brothers, Carl, Albert, Gust, Benny, Willie, Arthur and Rueben; and sisters, Ruth and Bertha.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Grace Lutheran Church, Erskine.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, Fosston, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Fairview Cemetery.

Valerian 'Val' 'Larry' Truscinski

GREENBUSH, Minn. -- Valerian "Val" "Larry" Truscinski, 69, Greenbush, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, in Roseau (Minn.) Area Hospital.

Valerian Truscinski was born Dec. 11, 1928, the son of Joseph and Helen (Kasprowicz) Truscinski, in Florian, Minn. He attended school in Florian and South St. Paul. In 1944, he moved to Greenbush and operated the Hartz Store. He married Leona Zabrocki on July 29, 1947, in Greenbush. He also worked as a farmer and construction worker. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad from 1964 to 1990. He later worked for Gonshorowski Sanitation and Sather-Whitchurch Sanitation, Greenbush.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Mark (Nancy), Calabasas, Calif., Tim, Moorhead, and Robert (Patty), Rodney (Angie), Alan (Valerie) and LeRoy (Amanda), all of Greenbush; daughters, Bernadette (Chris) Skalecki and Barbara (Jim) Befus, both of Racine, Wis.; 19 grandchildren; his mother, of Greenbush; and a half sister, Patty (Tom) Haggerty, St. Paul.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer; a son, Gregory; a grandson; and his father.

Services: 11 a.m. today, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Greenbush.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Blessed Sacrament Cemetery.

Marjorie A. Bryden

HALLOCK, Minn. -- Marjorie A. Bryden, 83, Northfield, Minn., formerly of Hallock, died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, in Northfield Hospital.

Marjorie Ann Bryden was born July 28, 1915, the daughter of Frank and Elsie May (Boyce) Bryden, in Crookston. She moved with her family to Hallock, where she graduated from high school. She attended Hamline University in St. Paul, and obtained her master's degree from the University of Minnesota. She taught in Warren and Kenyon, Minn., before moving to Northfield. She taught in Northfield until retiring in 1971. Her main subject was French and she also taught English and art.

She is survived by several cousins.

Services: 11 a.m. today, United Methodist Church, Northfield, and 2 p.m. Wednesday, First Presbyterian Church, Hallock.

Visitation: One hour before services today and Wednesday in the church.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock (Bierman, Northfield).

Shirley J. Ziegler

KENNEDY, Minn. -- Shirley J. Ziegler, 73, Thornton, Colo., formerly of Kennedy, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, in Thornton.

Shirley Jean Fox is the daughter of John Norman and Signe (Ukkelberg) Fox. She lived in Kennedy. She graduated in 1948 from UND with a degree in mathematics. She married Keith Ziegler on June 25, 1949.

She is survived by daughters, Mary (John) Suess, Thornton, and Julie (Jeff) Stark, Camarillo, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Services: Will be held at a later date.

Burial: Kennedy Cemetery.
