Rev. James L. Franklin

Services for Rev. James L. Franklin, 84, of Van Buren, Ark., formerly a long-time resident of Maple Plain, were Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Maple Plain Community Church.

Interment was in Lewis Cemetery in Maple Plain.

He ministered for the Lord in Christian and Missionary Alliance Churches for more than 50 years. During this time, he served in Wright, Minn., Marshfield and Oconto, Wis., Maple Plain and Van Buren, Ark.

Rev. Franklin died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Wilson Franklin; sons, James (Lynda) Franklin of Maple Plain and Rev. Thomas (Becky) Franklin of Northfield; daughter, Janean (Robert) Vineyard of Van Buren, Ark.; grandchildren, Todd, Jennifer, Tim, Jim III, Jonathan and Richard and five great-grandchildren.

Johnnie Gabbert

Services for Johnnie Frank Gabbert, Sr., 60, of Rockford, were Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Our Father's Lutheran Church in Rockford.

He was a longtime employee of Douglas Corporation.

Mr. Gabbert is survived by his loving wife, Donna Gabbert; children, Robert (Kim) Borgen of Champlin, Nonnie Lynn Gabbert of Portland, Ore., Staff Sgt. Johnnie Frank (Regina) Gabbert Jr., U.S. Army, Germany, Cami Stem of Montrose and Shane (Sarah) Borgen of Rockford; nine grandchildren; sisters, Annetta Louise Showman of Java, S.D., Sharlyn Sue Ellwood of Anaheim, Calif., Martha Iola Eckhart of Carver; a brother, John Curtis Johnson; nine nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Frances Hansen

Services for Frances A Hansen, 72, of Sturgeon Lake were Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, in Hope Lutheran Church in Moose Lake, with Rev. Nathan Anderson officiating.

Mrs. Hansen died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, in Mercy Health Care Center after a courageous battle for more than a year with ovarian cancer.

She was born Aug. 17, 1929, in Minneapolis, to John and Selma (Ishaug) Thingvold. She was a 1948 graduate of Rockford High School. She was united in marriage Sept. 2, 1967, in Minneapolis, to Reider Hansen.

She loved music and travel while living and working in Minneapolis. Mrs. Hansen worked for Western Union of Minneapolis, Northwestern Bell of Minneapolis, Eastman Kodak of Minneapolis and New York, Douglas Aircraft of Santa Monica, Western Weighing and Inspection Bureau of Minneapolis, Duluth School Dist. 709, Wahls Department Store of Duluth and Allers Store of Moose Lake.

She sang in the Northwestern Bell and Central Lutheran Church Choirs and spent 10 years in the Duluth Accordionaires Band Parents Auxiliary. She was also a member of Sons of Norway, AARP, an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Duluth for 20 years and currently a member of Oak Lake Lutheran Church of Kerrick where she also sang in the church choir and participated in WELCA and Sunday School. The Hansens moved to their Island Lake retirement home near Moose Lake in l992. She was loved and was proud of her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Reider of Sturgeon Lake; daughter, Harmony (Curtis) Rode of Lamoure, N.D.; son, Bryan (Rebecca) Hansen of Duluth; mother, Selma Thingvold of Rockford; brothers John (Lois) Thingvold of St. Louis Park, Lyle (Shirley) Thingvold of Annandale, Daryle (Susette) Thingvold of Forest Lake, Richard Thingvold of Minneapolis, Dennis (Mary) Thingvold of Buffalo, and Douglas (Carole) Thingvold of Rockford; sister, Shirley (John) Jacobs of Blaine; four grandchildren, Nicole Phipps-Hansen, Austin Hansen, Kayla Hansen, and Calen Rode; many nieces and nephews.

Florence Hennig

Services for Florence E. Hennig, 84, of Osseo, were Saturday Jan. 19, 2002, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 710 Broadway St. E., Osseo.

Burial was at Maple Knoll Cemetery, Maple Grove.

Mrs. Hennig died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Louise Nelson; brothers, Nelius and Bjarne Nelson; and sister, Irene Ellingson.

Survivors include children and spouses, Lois Schreiber (Lee) of Maple Grove, Patrick Hennig (Judy) of Henderson, Nev., and Michele Hagen (Gerald) of Ormsby; six grandchildren, Loren (Theresa) Schreiber, Larry (Amy) Schreiber, Lori (Timothy) Johnson, Shelly Hagen, Troy (Laura) Hagen, and Kristen Hagen; four great-grandchildren, Thomas, Laura, Daniel and Courtney; brothers, Einer Nelson (Olga), Vern Nelson (Virginia), Irvin Nelson (Dorothy) and Quintin Nelson (Ruth); sisters, Bergliot Patterson, Norma Haug and Dorothy Nelson (Duane); brothers-in-law, Larry Hennig (Irene) and Vernon Ellingson; and sister-in-law Lillian Hegland (Morris).

Lyle V. Johnson

Services for Lyle V. Johnson, 82, of Maple Plain were Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Lake.

Inurnment was at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.

Mr. Johnson died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, from pneumonia. He was born Jan. 17, 1919, in Hector, Minn., the son of Fred and Hulda (Johnson) Johnson.

He was a member of the Electrotypers Union. He had been an electrotyper for AG Johnson Electro-type Co. in Minneapolis for many years. After his retirement he lived close to his daughters in Maple Plain.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his loving wives, Geraldine "Suzy" and Lorraine; brothers, Marvin, Harold, Harvey and Orville; sister, Lillian Bigbee; son-in-law, John Underdahl and granddaughter, Angel.

He is survived by caring daughters, Diane (Jim) Whitehead of Long Lake and Sherry Underdahl of Maple Plain; grandchildren, Starla (Troy) Dixen, Lee Whitehead, Audra Whitehead, Lane (Karby) Underdahl, Gage (Julie) Underdahl, Wade Underdahl and Shanna Underdahl and special friend, Jake Dombrovski; great-grandchildren, Rayna Dixen and Nate and Mitchell Underdahl; sister, Violet Kirst and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Thingvold.

Thomas James Kuka, Sr.

Services for Thomas James Kuka, Sr., 71, of Watertown, were Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown.

Fr. Frank Wampach and Fr. James Livingston officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Steve Gallus, Rick Kuka, Paul Swartzer, Jamie Swartzer, Mike Speckel, Terry Gallus, Tony Blackketter and Paul Kuka.

Mr. Kuka died accidentally Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002. He was born Sept. 23, 1930, in Watertown, the son of Paul F. and Veronica (Pilgram) Kuka. He was married to Marian Swartzer and they enjoyed 43 years of marriage.

He was a lifetime member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown. He belonged to the Delano Knights of Columbus and to the 4th Degree Nicollet Assembly. He served his country during the Korean conflict and was a member of the Watertown American Legion. He lived in the Watertown area and worked in construction for 35 years. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Kuka was preceded in death by son, Thomas, Jr.; parents, Paul and Veronica; brother, Archie; father-in-law, George Swartzer and brother-in-law, George Swartzer.

He is survived by wife, Marian; daughters, Rose (Kevin) Menden of Winsted, Rita Kuka of Winsted, Ruth (Rodolfo) Castillo of Minneapolis, Diane (Thomas) Lueck of Anoka, Kelly Kuka and her fiancee, Tony Anya of Bloomington and Amy Kuka of Urbana, Ill.; son, Dale (Monica) of Delano; grandchildren, Racheal, Emily and Zachary Menden, Ryan, Stephanie and Timothy Kuka, Krista, Kendra and Kassandra Lueck and Anicha and Anthony Anya; sisters, Monica (James) Neaton and Mary (Donald) Speckel; brother, Joseph Kuka; mother-in-law, Susan Swartzer; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Kuka; brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Irene Swartzer, Jack and Marguerite Swartzer, Lorraine and Emmett Lynch, Betty and Louie Bury, Joe and Dorothy Swartzer, Luverne and Leo Blackketter, Rosemary Swartzer, Bob and MaryLynn Swartzer, Marvin and Laurie Swartzer, Susan and Ed Windsperger, Gene and Mary Helen Swartzer, Tony and Sandy Swartzer, Ervin and Renee Swartzer and Peter and Alice Swartzer.

Annetta M. Kulseth

Services for Annetta M. Kulseth, 87, of Maple Grove were Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at 11 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Minneapolis.

Mrs. Kulseth died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at home.

She was born Lake City, Aug. 23, 1914, where she attended public schools. She worked for various Minneapolis families. On Nov. 30, 1940, she married Harter Kulseth. They were longtime active members of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include her brother Elmer (Mavis) Sprick of Lake City; sisters Anna Smith of Red Wing, Alverna Miller of Old Frontenac, Florence Bye of Maplewood, and Catherine (John) Kirkwood of Lake City; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

Memorials suggested to St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 2901 Emerson Av. N., Minneapolis, MN 55411.

Mary Ann Liedl

Services for Mary Ann Liedl, 81, of Maple Grove, formerly of Edina, will be today (Wednesday) Jan. 16, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Church of St. Joan of Arc, 45th and Clinton Ave. S.

Private interment Resurrection Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Edward Sr. and infant daughter, Beth.

Survivors include six children and their families Ann Liedl, Terry (Ron) Heinz, Katie (Mike) Cavanaugh, Joe (Suzie), Patrick (Helen) and Christy (Ben) Phelps; 14 grandchildren; sister, Helen McNally; and brother, Jack (Sandra) Ryan.

Memorials preferred to The American Academy of Neurology Education and Research Foundation.

Mary Morrow

Services for Mary Kathleen Morrow, 47, of Big Lake were conducted Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at 11 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Big Lake.

She was preceded in death by her father, Mike Krutzig in 1999 and by her father-in-law and mother-in-law William and Margaret Morrow.

Survivors include her husband, John Morrow; children, Katherine Mary Morrow and John Paul Morrow, both at home; stepchildren, Matthew Paul Morrow and Andrea Lea Nelson; her mother, Bernice Krutzig of Big Lake; brothers, Michael (Alison) Krutzig of Big Lake, Daryl (Kathy) Krutzig of Maple Grove, William (Betsy) Krutzig of Wayzata, Douglas (Janet) Krutzig of Albertville, Mark (Gwen) Krutzig of St. Michael and Dale Krutzig of Big Lake; sisters, Deborah Ward of Plymouth, Becky (Douglas) Waldhoff of Maple Grove and Catherine (Douglas) Niklason of Brandon, S.D.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, William (Angela) Morrow of Minneapolis, Jerome (Susan) Morrow of Edina, Josephine Mennega of Greenwich, Ct. and Patricia (Vernon) Bonneville of Burnsville; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Joanne T Reshetar

Joanne T. Reshetar, 66, of Champlin, who grew up in Loretto, and was long-time restaurateur of Little Jack's Steakhouse in northeast Minneapolis, died Thursday, Jan. 10, of a heart attack at her home in Champlin.

Services were Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at 10 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Clement's Catholic Church in Minneapolis.

Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery.

Mrs. Reshetar entered the restaurant business after marrying Jack Reshetar, the second generation of his family to run the steakhouse. Her son, Jason, and daughter, Melanie Reshetar, now own and manage the restaurant.

She was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her loving husband of 41 years, Jack; children and spouses, Brad (Amy) Klick, Steve Klick, Jason (Barbara) Reshetar; Melanie Reshetar; grandchildren, Justin, Heidi, Steve, Shannon, Adam, Paul, Jeffrey, Jacob and Josie; great-grandchild, Madison; sister, Grace Bruno; and brother, Theodore Reimer.

Jeffrey Smith

Memorial service for Jeffrey A. Smith, 33, of Stillwater is 11 a.m. today (Monday) Jan. 21, 2002, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 115 N. 4th St., Stillwater.

Mr. Smith was the loving husband of Dawn Johnson, and devoted father of MacKenzie, 5, Evan (2 1/2) and Emelia, 1.

He is also survived by parents, Al and Pat Smith of Rogers; grandmother, Rose Smith; brother, Scott (Liann) Smith; sisters, Michele (Gerry Bosak) Smith, and Peggy (Bruce) Jindra; mother and father-in-law, Dennis and DiAnn Johnson; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Eunice Vetsch

A memorial service for Eunice L. Vetsch, 77, of Maple Grove were Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Washburn-McReavy DuShane Chapel, Robbinsdale.

Interment was at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.

She died peacefully surrounded by her family Thursday, Jan. 10.

Mrs. Vetsch was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth.

Survivors include daughters, Doreen (finance Wayne) and Sandra (Don) Watkins; grandchildren, Frank Stalker, Dave (Cari) and James Watkins; great grandchildren, Kalie and Amber; brothers, Jack and Robert Tinsen; and family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.

Martha Barthel

Services for Martha P. Barthel, 92, of Buffalo and formerly of St. Michael were Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at 2 p.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael.

Rev. Leonard Siebenaler was the celebrant and interment followed at The St. Michael Cemetery.

B. VanBeusekom was the reader for the Mass and Debra Brager was the Eucharistic Minister. Clarence Eull, David Zachman, Michael Praught, David Dehmer, Vern Schumm and Troy Barthel were the casket bearers.

Mrs. Barthel died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at Sunrise of Buffalo.

She was born in St. Michael Nov. 28, 1909, the daughter of August and Anna Willems Zachmann.

On Nov. 28, 1934, Martha Zachmann was joined in holy marriage to Gregor J. Barthel at St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael. Mr. and Mrs. Barthel engaged in dairy farming in Frankfort Township for many years. Gregor Barthel preceded his wife in death Oct. 17,1987.

Mrs. Barthel was a lifetime member of St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael and belonged to its Christian Mothers. Through the years, she and Mr. Barthel were active in the St. Michael and Hanover Senior Citizens. She was also a former volunteer for Wright County Human Services.

She is survived by a special nephew and caregivers, Lowell "Pete" and Marlene Barthel of Buffalo; a niece, Dorothy Schumm of Elk River; sisters-in-law, Beatrice Praught of Albertville and Florence Barthel of Rush City; close friends, Karen and David Dehmer of St. Michael; many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Kathryn Zachmann.

Marvin O. Berwald

Services for Marvin O. Berwald, 71, of Watertown were Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Watertown.

Rev. Paul Krentz officiated and interment was in the Watertown Public Cemetery. Casket bearers were his grandchildren.

Mr. Berwald died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia. He was born Sept. 21, 1930, in Watertown, the son of Herman and Lydia (Schaunamann) Berward. He was baptized Oct. 12, 1930, and confirmed April 2, 1944, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Watertown. He married Bonita B. Bender Sept. 23, 1950, at Moravian Church in Waconia.

Mr. Berwald was a lifetime resident of Watertown and a faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where he served as church trustee, mission treasurer, building committee and men's club member.

He began his career and love for trucks at an early age working for his dad in the family gravel and road construction business. He continued driving trucks for Dairy Fresh Milk Co., delivering milk for 30 years to stores in the western Minnesota area. He made many long and lasting friendships with his customers. He then worked for Fairmort Foods, Meyer Brothers Dairy and Advanced Machine. After his retirement in 1995, he was employed by Midwest Bus Co. driving a school bus, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. He became known as "Marv the bus driver" and had many exciting stories to tell. Due to his progressing cancer, he could no longer continue driving a bus after October.

Mr. and Mrs. Berwald enjoyed many bus tours and trips visiting relatives and friends. He loved being with his family and friends, going out for coffee, eating out and playing his button accordian. His love for people and music beamed through his smile. He will be lovingly missed by all.

Mr. Berwald was preceded in death by parents, Herman and Lydia Berwald; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Howard and Alice Bender; brother-in-law, Gerald Bender and nephew, Ladd Bender.

He is survived by wife, Bonita; daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Lucian Boll of Crookston, Diane and Tom Kohler of White Bear Lake, Joyce and Clarence Boll of Maple Plain and Joann and Duane Mueller of Delano; son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Jackie Berwald of Watertown; grandchildren, Christine Boll, Bryan and Melissa Boll, Amy Boll, Stephanie Boll, Jennifer Boll, Steven Kohler, Jaime and Patrick Ess, Wesley Boll, Derek Boll, Noah and Nicole Mueller, Sara and Wade Erickson and Brandon Berwald; great-grandchildren, Courtney Erickson, Chloe Erickson and Shelby Mueller; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Marlene Bender of Watertown and Shirley and Dennis Hilk of Delano; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
