William “Bill” Lindgren
William “Bill” Lindgren, who was a member of the Proctor Moose Lodge 1302, died of cancer Fri., Mar. 3, 2006 in Winter Haven, Fla. He was 77.

Bill was born in Duluth on Mar. 2, 1929, and moved to Winter Haven from Lake Wales one year ago. He worked for U.S. Steel and Marigold Foods. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. Bill was also a member of the VFW Post No. 3915 and the American Legion in Princeton. He was Lutheran.

Bill is survived by his wife Marlene of Fla., two sons, a daughter, a sister, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, all of Minn..

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Anton Warren Otterblad
Susan (John) Foschi of Duluth is mourning the death of her father, Anton Warren Otterblad. He died Saturday, March 25, 2006 at the Benedictine Health Center. He was 76.

He was born in Duluth, Jan. 18, 1930 to Anton Warren and Mary Cecelia (Krey) Otterblad, Sr. Tony served with ‘B’ Company, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve during the Korean Conflict, where he participated in the battle at the Chosin Reservoir. He married Joann Virginia Caven on Nov. 3, 1956 in St. John’s Catholic Church. He was a conductor for the Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring in 1990.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Frank and John Thompson, and his sisters, Betty Parks and Elsie Moss.

Survivors also include his wife Joann; his sons Col. Michael (Margie) of Montclair, Va., and David (Dawn) of Farmington, Minn.; his daughters Anne (Steve) Larson of Sterling, Alaska, and Lynne (Mark) Carlson, of Duluth; grandchildren Kristen, Ryan, Jesse, Luke and Jacob Otterblad, Stephanie and Nathan Larson, Jordan and Josh Foschi, Erik, Evan and Sean Carlson; his step-grandchildren Justin, Brianna and Sarah Theroux; and his sister Frances Wells of Pico Rivera, Calif.

Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Ronald Alan Marttila
Ronald Alan Marttila, who was a graduate of Proctor High School and helped design the Proctor Community Center, died Thursday March 23, 2006 in his home after a long struggle with A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). He was 55.

Ron, a Saginaw resident, was born March 24, 1950 in Cloquet to Charles and Maire (Lehtinen) Marttila. He married Bernadine ‘Bernie’ Helmer on March 25, 1977. He was a graduate of Proctor High School and attended DAVTI for architectural drafting and design. After school, Ron went to work for John Ivey Thomas which became Thomas and Vecchi. He also worked for Construction Consultants, D.E. Stanius & Associates, Ed Schaefer & Associates, Doberman & Helske. He then went to work for LHB Architectural & Engineering where he retired in October 2004 due to his illness. Ron was a member of A.I.A. and C.S.I. He held the position of President and also served on the Board of Point Place Timeshare at Breezy Point Resort, Minn. Pastor Bill of Grace Lutheran Church, Hermantown Minn. became a very important part of Ron’s life. He would visit Ron at home and make things a lot easier for him to understand and accept the journey in his life.

He is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Maire Marttila.

Ron is survived by his wife Bernie; daughters Terry (Jeff) Martin, Duluth; Lynn Amic, Saginaw; grandchildren Scott and Tim Miller, Duluth; Jennifer (Mike) McDougall, Florida and Rebekka Amic, Duluth; great-grandchildren Cody and Dusty Miller, Tyrik and Trey McDougall; brothers Bob (Inge) Marttila of Michigan; Charles (Lisa) Marttila, Shoreview Minn.; sister Nancy (D. Rene) Zied, Arizona; nephew Christopher Marttila; niece Jacqueline (Christopher) Mann and great-niece Sydney Mann.

Service was held Monday at Grace Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Lloyd Arvid Hanson
Lloyd Arvid Hanson, who had lived at Pike Lake and Twig for most of his life and was owner and operator of L. A. Hanson Trucking and Snowplowing, died Sun., Mar. 26, 2006 in St. Luke’s Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was 68.

The Bergstrom Road, Saginaw resident was born on Feb. 5, 1938 in Duluth and grew up in Hermantown. He married Rethel P. Pritchett on July 12, 1958 in Twig. He was a member of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association.

He was preceded in death by his son and business partner Dale on Oct. 18, 2004, brothers Arnold, Bernard, Robert, and Glen, sisters Gladys Loberg and Margaret Swanson, and daughter-in-law Rebecca Hanson.

Survivors include his wife of over 47 years Rethel, daughters Roxane (Larry) Davis, Carol (David) Eckstrom and Debra (Brian) Billman, all of Saginaw, grandchildren Devaney and Keri Kipina, David (fiancé Jennifer Homann), and Amanda Eckstrom, Kyle Hanson and Boyd and Grace Billman, brothers Arthur of Duluth, Theodore (Lucille) of Cloquet and Lenard of Brookston, sisters-in-law Freda of Mesa, Ariz. and Lorraine of Proctor, brother-in-law Edward Loberg of Duluth, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation 5 to 7 p.m. today, Thursday in Bell Brothers Funeral Home, and will continue from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Grace Lutheran Church, 5454 Miller Trunk Hwy., Hermantown. Rev. William Pohl and Rev. Marshall Moen officiating. Burial at Grand Lake Cemetery.

Chad Alan Bergman
Chad Alan Bergman, 35, of Proctor, who along with his wife Laura and son Matthew recently moved here to be closer to his family after the death of his sister eight months ago, died Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at the University Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis.

Chad was preceded in death by his sister, Paige Bergman on July 27, 2005.

He was employed as a respiratory therapist at SMDC in Duluth. Chad was a 1989 graduate of Cook High School and a 1996 graduate of Lake Superior College.

Chad is survived by his wife, Laura; step-son, Matthew Dahl; his parents, Chuck and Gail Bergman of Cook; sister, Kim Bergman, and brother, Seth Bergman, both of Troutdale, Ore.; and numerous family and friends.

A memorial service was held Monday in Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook.

Robert ‘Bob’ Wallace Sullivan
Robert ‘Bob’ Wallace Sullivan, 80, of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Duluth, died March 13, 2006, at Grossmont Hospital in San Diego.

He was born Nov. 1, 1925, in Duluth to Esther and Denny Sullivan. On Nov. 1, 1947, he married his wife, Ethel Peterson, also of Duluth. He sailed on the ore boats for a brief time and later worked for US Steel. He also worked for Hallet Wire and Superwood. In 1986, they moved to San Diego where they resided until his death.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Denny Sullivan; his daughter, Roberta Stoffel; and a sister, Virginia Sullivan.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel; a daughter, Sandra Lee (Rolf) Olson of Culver, Minn.; sons, Denny (Sharon Peterson) Sullivan of Proctor and Kelly (Normalynn) Sullivan of Cloquet; sisters, Lorraine (Donald) Davis of Atascadero, Calif., and Donna Engstrom of Burnsville, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Erik (Amy) Olson, Jon (Carlye) Olson, Peter (Shelly) Olson, Matt Sullivan, Shilo (Cameron) Klein, Robert Sullivan, Johnathan (Nicole Murphy) Fosle, Starr Sullivan, and Coltt Sullivan; and 12 great grandchildren, Riley, Allison, Ryan, and Reid Olson, Wyatt Olson, Leanna and Lauren Olson, Baylee and Sarah Klein, Chloe Fosle, Emaley and Conner Sullivan.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, in Faith Lutheran Church in Culver, Minn.

James William “Jim” Anderson
James William “Jim” Anderson of Old Hwy. 53, Saginaw, died Sun., Apr. 2, 2006, as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident. He was 45.

He was born on Jan. 10, 1961 in Duluth to Ray and Diane (Pentilla) Anderson. He was a lifelong Island Lake and Saginaw resident. Jim was a graduate of Central High School. He married Wendy Oakland on July 12, 1986 at her parents home in Twig. He was the owner and operator of his own business, Anderson Auto Body, for many years. He was a current employee of Lakehead Constructors, Inc. Jim was a member of the National Federation of Independent Business and the Painters Union. His greatest joy was family and friends. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, drawing and had a

great appreciation of all types of music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John and Dennis Anderson, mother-in law Marilyn Oakland, and sister-in-law Reenie Olson.

Survivors include his wife Wendy, children Carl, Danielle, Mari and Samantha Anderson, all at home, granddaughter Izabella, sisters Barbara (Palmer) Holzer of Blaine and Sharon (Jim) Thoren of Duluth, father-in-law Loren Oakland of Twig, brother-in-law Craig (Rita) Oakland of Twig, sister-in-law Cindy (Joe) Brown of Duluth, grandfather-in-law Alfred Oakland of Twig, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. service today, Thursday, in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Twig, Pastor Christopher Wheatley officiating.

Gloria B. Tuttle
Gloria B. Tuttle, who was a Proctor High School graduate, died Wed., Mar. 29, 2006 in Bayshore Health Center. She was 75.

The Hermantown resident was born in Duluth on Nov. 11, 1930 to Francis and Katherine Burke. She worked for Marshall Wells in the buying department. Gloria married Edwin Tuttle on March 31, 1952 in Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Edwin Jr., a daughter Patricia Mork, and a brother Eugene Burke.

Gloria is survived by her husband Edwin, daughters Kathryn (Mark) Severson and Laurie (Dale) Paszak, both of Duluth, grandchildren Christopher, Dawn, Gloria, Jessica, Nathan, Amy, Eric, and Donny, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Rev. Fr. James Crossman officiated at the service. Burial in Oneota Cemetery.

Paul Stephen Slattengren
Paul Stephen Slattengren of Duluth passed away Thurs., Mar. 30, 2006, in Miller Dwan Medical Center. He was 59.

Paul was born on April 8, 1946 in St. Croix Falls, Wis., to LeRoy and Betty Slattengren. Paul was a 1964 graduate of Proctor High School and attended the University of Minnesota and UMD. He retired as a carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was an Eagle Scout and loved outdoor life, especially hunting and fishing. His hobbies were writing poetry, playing his guitar and wood burning art. His wit made him a friend to all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his father LeRoy.

Surviving are his mother Betty, brothers David (Sonya) of Brooklyn Center, John (Joan), Roger and Thomas (Marilyn), all of Duluth, a sister Karen (Douglas) Vandenberg of Duluth, and many nieces and nephews and extended family. The family wishes to thank the staff at Miller Dwan and its dialysis unit for their excellent care.

Service was held Sun., April 2, 2006.

Barbara Mae (Slosson) Chantelois
Barbara Mae (Slosson) Chantelois went home to be with her Lord and Savior Tues., Mar. 28, 2006, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family. She was 83.

She was born April 23, 1922, in Superior, Wis., to Lanson and Sophia Slosson. Barbara was a graduate of Proctor High School. On May 6, 1943, she married Glen Chantelois. She was a longtime, active member of Apostolic Gospel Church. Barbara was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Carol Angela Slosson, and a brother Sonny Slosson.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 63 years Glen, daughters Nina Marie (Thomas) Bijold and Billie Jean (Robert) Koski, all of Proctor, grandchildren Gwendolyn Bijold, Michael (Lisa) Bijold, Rebecca (Marcus) Ward, and Todd (Sue) Koski, great-grandchildren Kyle, Madison, Amanda, Paige, Alex, Jacob, Dakota, Dustyn, Mike, and Dan, a brother Richard (Jean) Slosson of White Bear Lake, a sister June (Richard) Nowak of Colo., and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nursing staff of St. Mary’s Medical Center ER and the Oncology Unit, also to Dr. Lynn MacLean, Dr. Jones, Dr. Christian, and Dr. Savage.

Services were held at Apostolic Gospel Church. Burial at Oneota Cemetery.
