Evelyn Taylor

Services for Evelyn Dorothea Taylor, 84, of Buffalo were Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Buffalo Evangelical Covenant Church in Buffalo.

Pastor Maynard Anderson and Pastor Dennis Kolbrek officiated the service. Sallie Anderson was the organist and the soloist was Lois Smith.

Interment was at Stanton Cemetery in Stanton, Minn.

Visitation was held Wednesday afternoon from 4 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo. Visitation continued one hour prior to the service at church.

Mrs. Taylor died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003. She was born June 13, 1919, in Stanton, the daughter of Edgar and Esther (Fox) Knutson.

Evelyn Dorothea (Knutson) Taylor was a breath of fresh air. From her early years until the end Evie, as she was affectionately called, loved to read extensively and write stories and poetry. She graduated from Cannon Falls High School, second in her class in 1937. Then she attended St. Cloud State Teachers College, graduating in 1941. After teaching a few years she decided to enter nurses training. While still in training, Paul Taylor came home on leave from the Air Force and they were married within a week on Feb. 23, 1944. She traveled with Paul to Greensboro, S.C., and then to Indianapolis, Ind., for his flight training.

Mrs. Taylor returned to Stanton to give birth to their first son, Denny. Afterwards, they took the train to Texas where Paul was stationed. Shortly he was released from service and they returned to Minnesota and made their home in South Minneapolis. The twins, Jim and Judy, were born there. A few years later they moved to live near Lake Minnetonka. She always loved the lakes and was a good swimmer, which she passed on to her children. The little girls, Sandy and Barb, were born there. They lived near Wayzata for 14 years and then moved to Wisconsin for a few years.

A move to Mound came next and then the last 20 years were spent in Buffalo. It was often said of Evie that she loved people, she never knew a stranger, and she helped many a struggling student through school.

Above all she had a quick wit, always made you feel welcome, and had an extremely positive outlook on life.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Taylor of Buffalo; children, James (Martha) Taylor of Mound, Judith (Arlo) Auch of St. Paul, Sandra (John) Miller of Charleston, S.C., and Barbara (Gary) Sipe of Rockford; 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; sister Laura (Robert) Jorgensen of Leesburg, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Concurrent with working at Cargill, Mr. Wiff served two terms as the mayor of Champlin, from 1964 to 1968. Champlin, still a village in 1964, had a population of about 1,300. While mayor, he oversaw the installation of a village-wide sewer system, which laid the groundwork for future city growth. Mr. Wiff was also active in local and state politics and campaigned for former U.S. Reps. Bill Frenzel and Clark MacGregor.

Mr. Wiff sang in the choir at the Anoka United Methodist Church and actively volunteered with the Boy Scouts in Champlin. He and his wife also started J & L Paint Co.

In 1969 Mr. Wiff and his family moved to Illinois where he became assistant manager of Cargill's Carpentersville plant. He later went into resin sales and managed another plant in Chicago Heights.
