Donald K. Mortenson

Services for Donald Kenneth Mortenson, 73, of Maple Grove, formerly of Brooklyn Center were Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at Cross of Glory Lutheran Church in Brooklyn Center.

Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Mr. Mortenson died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, of complications with Alzheimer's disease.

Following high school in Pequot Lakes, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in journalism/advertising. He enjoyed a career with Post Publishing Newspapers, Minnesota Fabrics, and Minnesota Suburban Newspapers.

He was deeply devoted and loving to his family, friends, church, and God.

He is survived by his wife, Juliette; children, Brenda (Jeff) Nelson, Jody (Todd) Poston, Brian (Sheri) Mortenson, Barry (Christine) Mortenson, Marcie (Dave) Camrud and Randall (Betsy) Mortenson; 15 grandchildren, many other relatives and dear friends.

Mr. Mortenson is preceded in death by his parents and six siblings.

Memorials are welcome to the Alzheimer's Association or Cross of Glory Lutheran Church.

Marlene Nelson

Services for Marlene Eleanor Nelson, 56, former Rockford resident, were Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at Providence Valley Lutheran Church, Dawson.

Mrs. Nelson died Aug. 16 in Westminster, Colo. The daughter of Marvin and Violet Lund, she was born March 15, 1947, in Providence Valley Township. She attended Dawson Public School in School Dist. 38. After graduating from high school in 1965, she attended the School of Cosmetology in Minneapolis.

She married Gary Miller in 1967. The couple had two daughters, Kimberly and Bridgett.

After owning a beauty shop in Appleton, she moved to Minneapolis and worked with the cleaning company, Service De Qualite. Later she worked with her sister, Mercedes, at the Sugar-n-Spice cake company and then at Casey's General Store, in Rockford.

After marrying Holden Nelson in 1992, Mrs. Nelson lived in Rockford for many years. She and her husband moved to Florida, so he could attend school. After his graduation, they moved to Westminster, Colo., where they lived until her death.

Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Violet Lund; her brother, Cordell Lund and her brother-in-law, Neil Johnson.

She is survived by her husband, Holden Nelson; daughters Kimberly (Rodney) Gruchow and Bridgett (Scott) Ouren; sister, grandchildren, Mackenzie and Noah Ouren and Cody, Krista, Justin and Colleen Gruchow; sister, Mercedes Johnson; brother Kermit (Phylis) Lund; mother-in-law, Mary Nelson and sisters-in-law Phylis (Cordell) Lund, Carlene Foster and Marina Nelson.

Verneil L. Priebe

Services for Verneil Lorraine Priebe, 78, of Indiana, formerly of Maple Grove, were Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at Grace Lutheran Church in Muncie, Ind.

She died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Ind. She was born March 9, 1925, in Maple Grove to Herman and Minnie Priebe.

Mrs. Priebe was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Maple Grove. She graduated from Robbinsdale High School, then received her degree in medical technology from Minnesota University.

Her entire professional career was at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Ind. She retired in 1988.

Mrs. Priebe is survived by her sister, Vernette Wendler (Carl); brother, Luther Priebe (Phyllis); sister-in-law, Lee Priebe Spomer (Norm); nieces and nephews; many friends including former medical students.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Minnie Priebe; and brother, Weldon.

Dorothy Margaret Reyna

Services for Dorothy Margaret Reyna, 65, were Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Iten Funeral Home in Delano.

Interment was in the Delano Public Cemetery.

Mrs. Reyna was born and raised in a section of Brooklyn, N.Y. called Coney Island Feb. 22, 1938. When her children were small, she would take them for walks on the boardwalk and fishing pier, walks on the sandy beach and walks through the city zoo. In 1975, her oldest son moved out of New York City to Buffalo, Minn., for a position at Tonka Corp. Soon after, he was able to get her a job offer at the same plant and she worked near her son for eight years. In 1994 she went back to school for her GED. She also went to school for sewing. Over the last 23 years, she had been battling cancer. She died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003.

She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Hughes; mother, Ruth Hughes and brothers, Edward and Thomas Hughes.

She is survived by children, Bonita Berg, Robert Reyna, Thomas Reyna and Denise Moen; stepchildren, Roy, Norberto, Kevin and Thomas Reyna; brothers, Christopher and Ronald Hughes; sister, Lauretta Hughes Lopes; many grandchildren and other relatives.

Kenneth Smith

Services for Kenneth L. Smith, 86, of Rogers were Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Maple Grove.

The Rev. Steven C. Briel and the Rev. Matthew P. Johnson officiated. Interment followed at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.

Ardis Radintz was the organist for the funeral service. Congregational hymns were: "Holy, Holy, Holy," "God Loved the World So that He Gave," and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives."

Honorary casket bearer was Matthew Smith.

Casket bearers were Paul Lovgren, Bill Dolieslager, Brian Smith, Arend Smith, Daniel Smith and Daniel Picotte.

Mr. Smith died Thursday, Aug. 21, at The Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis.

He was born June 10, 1917, in Guthrie Center, Iowa, the son of Nile and Catherine Visner Smith.

He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during W.W. II.

On Sept. 18, 1937, Kenneth L. Smith and Dorothy L. Hayden were joined in holy marriage in Jordan, Minn. God blessed their marriage with seven children.

Mr. Smith was formerly employed at Hallet Construction and later worked at General Mills for 21 years.

He was a faithful member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Maple Grove. He also formerly belonged to St. John's Senior Group and to Corcoran's Senior Citizens.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy L. Smith; children, Eleanor I. Winebrenner of Plymouth and friend Derald, Elaine I. (Glen) Dolieslager of Maple Grove, Eileen I. Smith of Delano, Arnold K. (Kathleen) Smith, Bruce L. (Jane) Smith and Eugene G. Smith, all of Rogers, and Ronald P. (Julie) Smith of St. Michael; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; two brothers, Merle (Ginger) Smith of Jordan and Dean (Verena) Smith of Shakopee; a sister, Versa Tanquay of Duluth; and a sister-in-law, Rosemary Smith of Chanhassen; many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nile and Catherine Smith; a brother, Garlan Smith and by a sister, Doris Woerdehof.

Wendell Smith

Services for Wendell R. Smith, 77, of St. Michael were Thursday, Aug. 21, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church in St. Michael.

Rev. Leonard Siebenaler was the Celebrant and interment with military rites followed at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Mr. Smith died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at the V.A. Medical Center in Minneapolis.

He was born June 16, 1926, in Burtrum, Minn., the son of Rudolph and Esther Hustedt Smith.

Mr. Smith honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II.

On Oct. 30, 1945, Wendell R. Smith and Theresa R. Gangl were joined in holy marriage in Aitkin, Minn.

He was a longtime member of the Glaziers & Glassworker Local Union 1324 and Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Smith also formerly owned and operated Sun Country Tanning in southeast Minneapolis. He retired to St. Michael 17 years ago.

Through the years, he enjoyed golf, baseball, fishing and hunting. He especially took pleasure in attending St. Michael Saints baseball games.

Mr. Smith is survived by loving wife, Theresa Smith; children, Gary (Nancy) Smith of Dayton, Robert (Mary) Smith of Forest Lake, Denny Smith, Pamela (Chris) Nordling and Patricia Smith, all of Minneapolis; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley (Robert) Zimpel; a brother-in-law, Donald (Ruby) Gangl; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Craig Smith in 1966; his parents, Rudolph and Esther Smith; and by two sisters, Vivian and Barbara.

Scott Swan, Jr.

Services for Scott Swan, Jr., 13, of Dayton, were Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at the Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Home.

Scott was born July 9, 1990. He died Aug. 16 after being struck by an automobile while riding his dirt bike. Scott had completed seventh grade at the Bell Center in Coon Rapids.

He is preceded in death by grandfather, Howie; great-grandfathers, Harry and Julian; great-grandmother, Betty; and uncle, Michael.

Survived by mother, Erica Johnson (Jeremy Southerling); father, Scott Sr.; brothers, Donovan Swan and Paxton Goodsky; sister, Megan Werner; grandmas, Char Beyel and Gloria Howard; grandfather, Harry Johnson; aunts, Jessica, Margaret, Theresa and Jenny Johnson, Kathy "Bug" Beyel, Kerry Swan and Melissa Sanken; uncle, Andy Beyel; best friend, Trent Barlow; special friends, Brandon Sanken and "Old Man Rivers;" the Goodsky family; and many other relatives and friends.

Patricia E. Whalen

Services for Patricia E. Whalen, 69, of Maple Grove were Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at Church of St. Alphonsus.

Interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Mrs. Whalen is a retired rehabilitation counselor. She is past president of the Minnesota Rehabilitation Association, member of the National Rehabilitation Association and St. Alphonsus's Seniors.

She is survived by her sister, Irene Hanzlik; brother, Joseph (Marjorie) Whalen; nephews, Michael (Marcia) Hanzlik, John Whalen and Christopher (Hollie) Hanzlik; niece, Sara Hanzlik; great-nephew, Colin Hanzlik; many cousins; special friends, Bill Hannan and Steve Swanson.

Mrs. Whalen is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Eleanor.

Jim R. Williams

Services for Jim R. Williams, 36, of Maple Grove were Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at Gearty-Delmore Plymouth Chapel.

He is survived by his wife, Kris; parents, Larry and Teresa Wells; grandparents; seven brothers and sisters; other relatives and many friends.

Mr. Williams worked for SearchAmerica in Maple Grove.

Selma E. Weege

Services for Selma E. Weege, 80, formerly of Montrose, were Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at the Peterson Chapel in Buffalo.

Pastor Paul Marggraf officiated and interment followed at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery-Crawford Lake.

Casket bearers were Stanley Duske, Melvin Greehling, Burton Ramthun, Gerald Ramthun, Glen Ramthun and Roger Vanderlinde.

Mrs. Weege died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at the Delano Healthcare Center. She was born Jan. 6, 1923, in Rockford Township, the daughter of Herman and Annie Harwarth Greehling. She was baptized at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church-Pelican Lake Feb. 4, 1923. She was also instructed in the Lutheran Catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church July 26, 1936. Her confirmation memory verse was Psalm 145:18 and 19.

She was joined in marriage to Walter O. Weege June 7, 1950, at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. Mr. Weege preceded his wife in death Feb. 5, 2001. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Weege was preceded in death by an infant sister; parents and brother, Arnold Greehling.

She was a faithful member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church-Crawford Lake.

Edward Wilken

Services for Edward Walter Wilken, 99, of Rockford were Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rockford.

Rev. Michael Barlow officiated and Janet Beise was the organist. The congregational hymns were "I Know That My Redeemer Lives," "Just As I Am," "In the Garden" and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again."

Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Monticello. After the interment a light lunch was served at the Monticello Evangelical Covenant Church.

Serving as casket bearers were Tim Wilken, David Wulf, Wayne Wulf, John Bechtle, Ben Corona and Harvey Drew.

Mr. Wilken died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at Ebenezer Covenant Home in Buffalo.

He was born in Ceylon, Minn., Feb. 4, 1904, the son of Emil and Emma (Prust) Wilken. He was baptized Feb. 28, 1904, at St. John's Lutheran Church near Ceylon. He was confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Monticello March 24, 1918.

Mr. Wilken was united in marriage to Hazel (Goetkze) Feb. 22, 1929, in Monticello. He operated a Hatchery in Monticello from 1926 to 1933. They then moved to and lived in the Foley area for seven years. The Wilkens moved back to Monticello in 1940 and this is where he lived and farmed until he retired. Mrs. Wilken died May 8, 1964. Mr. Wilken then married Elsie (Wolff-Bechtle) Feb. 21, 1970, at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greenfield.

One of the things that he loved to talk about was that he helped build the Monticello bridge.

He is survived by wife, Elsie; children, Warren (Sharon) Wilken of Osseo, Helen Wulf of St. Michael and Ralph (Linda) Bechtle of Milaca; one brother, Emil Wilken and his wife Joann; also numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Hazel; three brothers and two sisters; and son-in-law, Marv Wulf.

Louise E. Zabel

Services for Louise E. Zabel, 89, of Delano, were Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at St. Peter's Catholic Church.

Rev. Michael Miller officiated and interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Delano.

Casket bearers were grandchildren, Tim Zabel, Mike Zabel, Paul Zabel, Joe Zabel, Rick Zabel and Tony Zabel.

Mrs. Zabel died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, at the Delano Healthcare Center. She was born Oct. 28, 1913 to Joseph and Elizabeth (Posson) Otto in Delano.

She was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. She was a lifelong resident of Delano and a member of the "Home Extension." She was recently honored for being the oldest member of the St. Anne's and St. Anthony's Society. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, sewing and spending time watching her cats. She was known for being an avid picture taker.

Mrs. Zabel was preceded in death by husband, Kermit; son, Carl and great-granddaughter, Amanda Zabel. She is survived by son, Tom and special friend, Joyce Farniok; daughter-in-law, Elaine Zabel; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and brother, John (Florence) Otto.
