Ella Lyytinen

Services for Ella Lillian Lyytinen, 93, were Monday, June 2, 2003, at 11 a.m. at King of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Golden Valley.

Rev. David P. Russow officiated and interment followed at Crystal Lake Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Karen Merseth was the organist for the funeral service. "Be Still, My Soul" was sung by Rev. Russow. "I'm But a Stranger Here," "Amazing Grace-How Sweet the Sound" and "Children of the Heavenly Father" were sung as congregational hymns.

Casket bearers were John W. Kohnen, John J. Kohnen, James Kolasa, Bill Daluge, Ron Strobel and Kenneth Barthel.

Mrs. Lyytinen, formerly of North Minneapolis, died Friday, May 30, at Wellstead of Rogers.

She was born in Corcoran Sept. 14, 1910, the daughter of Fred and Lydia Beier Schutte.

She was baptized at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Corcoran Oct. 16, 1910. She was also instructed in the Lutheran Catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Corcoran May 19, 1925.

During WW II, she worked at the Federal Arsenal in New Brighton. She also formerly did catering for several years.

On Sept. 14, 1946, Ella Schutte was joined in holy marriage to David J. Lyytinen. Mr. Lyytinen preceded his wife in death March 28, 1971.

She was a member of King of Grace Lutheran Church in Golden Valley.

Mrs. Lyytinen is survived by a sister, Irene Roeder of Osseo; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Schutte of Corcoran; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Emmie Schutte in 1920, Sylvia "Clara" Koehler in 1996 and Helen Barthel in 1998; and by a brother, Alfred Schutte in 1993.

Nira Mesker

Services for Nira Lee Mesker, 52, of Pine River and Gold Canyon, Ariz., were Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at Our Father's Lutheran Church in Rockford. Pastor Larry Rehlander officiated.

Interment Elmwood Cemetery.

Marlene Mohwinkel was the organist for the funeral service and Dan Schiller sang "On Eagles Wings." "Amazing Grace" and "Beautiful Savior" were sung as congregational hymns.

Donny Wisk, Oliver "Sonny" Heille, Everett Thiner, Travis Cichon, Jason Hennen and Roger Vass served as casket bearers.

Mrs. Mesker died peacefully Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on Nov. 18, 1950, in Breckenridge, Minn., the daughter of Donald and Esther Boehmelhner Ehlers.

On Dec. 16, 1972, she was joined in holy marriage to David E. Mesker in Wheaton.

She was president/owner of Kelco Supply Co. in Minneapolis. She was associated with Kelco since 1972. She and her husband David Mesker purchased the company in 1991.

Mrs. Mesker is survived by devoted husband, David; daughters, Sheila (fiancee Aaron Martin) of Dayton, and Alicia (Dan) Carr of Elk River; a son, Donovan (Michelle) of Buffalo; three beautiful grandsons, Brendan Martin, Kevin and Kyle Carr and another grandchild due in June; her mother, Esther Ehlers of Wheaton; a brother, Larry (Linda) Ehlers of Wheaton; a sister, Marilyn Sather of Fargo; many nieces, nephews, friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Ehlers and a nephew, Kevin Ehlers.

Gordon Zimmerman

Services for Gordon R. Zimmerman, 83, of Hanover were Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greenfield.

Rev. Dennis K. Strong officiated and interment followed at Salem Lutheran Cemetery.

Cindy Steinke was the organist for the funeral service and she also sang "The Lord's Prayer." "Just As I Am, Without One Plea," "I Hear the Savior Calling" and "I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say" were sung as congregational hymns.

Shane Baker, Bryan McCallum, Kristi Baker, Steve Wenzel, Jeff Leitzke and LeRoy Terebayza served as casket bearers.

Megan McCallum, Morgan, Taylor and Riley Zimmerman served as honorary casket bearers.

Mr. Zimmerman died Saturday, May 31, at the Ebenezer Covenant Home in Buffalo.

He was born in Osseo April 8, 1920, the son of Henry P. and Rose Minks Zimmerman.

Mr. Zimmerman was baptized at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Osseo and his sponsor was Laura Zimmerman. He was later confirmed as an adult June 13, 1947, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Osseo by Rev. Arnold Schulz. His confirmation memory verse was John 6:68.

He graduated from Osseo High School in 1938 and prior to WW II worked at Cessna Aircraft in Wichita, Kan.

Mr. Zimmerman honorably served his country in the Navy's Air Force during WW II.

On Aug. 28, 1948, Gordon Zimmerman was joined in holy marriage to Vernetta Middelstadt at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greenwood. God blessed their marriage with five children.

He was formerly employed at American Plating, Superior Plating, Dahlberg Electronics and retired at the age of 70 in 1990 from Wolkerstorfer Company.

In addition, Mr. Zimmerman ran his own side business called Zimmerman Gardens, raising and selling potatoes, sweet corn, pickles and many other garden vegetables for many years.

He was a faithful member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greenfield. He formerly served from 1961 until 1971 as Justice of the Peace for Hanover, Greenfield and St. Michael. He belonged to Hanover's Fire Department for 38 years. He also formerly served on Hanover's Planning Commission and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce for the city of Hanover. He was a Past Commander of VFW Post 5903 in Hamel and belonged to American Legion Post 172 in Osseo.

Mr. Zimmerman is survived by loving wife, Vernetta M. Zimmerman; children: Janet (Dennis) Baker of Dayton, Randy (Cindy) Zimmerman of Hanover, Thomas W. Zimmerman of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, Tim (Kristal) Zimmerman and Sheri (Doug) McCallum, all of Hanover; grandchildren, Kristi Baker and fiancé Steve Wenzel, Shane Baker, Bryan McCallum, Megan McCallum, Morgan Gloe, Taylor Zimmerman and Riley Zimmerman; sisters, Mildred Welton of Columbia Heights and Alice (Clarence) Leitzke of Champlin; aunts, Laura Zimmerman of Faribault, Lillian Zimmerman of Golden Valley and Eleanor Zimmerman of Big Lake; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry P. and Rose Zimmerman; brother, Harold; and a sister, Myrtle Aubart.

Edna Cox

Edna Louise Cox, 94, passed away peacefully May 6, 2003, at Mercy Hospital, Coon Rapids, with family at her side.

Mrs. Cox was the mother of Dennis D. Cox, a 20-year resident of Maple Grove. She moved to Minnesota in 1997 from her home of 47 years in Denver, Colo., following the death of her husband, Donald Harley Cox, 87. At the time of her passing, she was a resident of DeMar residence at Mary T., Inc., Coon Rapids.

Born July 5, 1908, in Chicago Heights, Ill., she was the only child of Frank and Minnie Wolterts Jaeger who owned Jaegers' Wallpaper and Paint in Chicago Heights. She graduated in 1928 from Bloom Township High School and married Don Cox on June 24, 1933. Early in their married lives, the Coxes lived in Chicago Heights and New York City, moving to Denver when their eldest son, Ron, became a student at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden. A homemaker who enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, home décor, acrylic and watercolor painting and playing the organ, Mrs. Cox later traveled around the United States with her husband on his sales trips. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Englewood, Colo.

Mrs. Cox is survived by son Ron H. Cox, PhD., and wife Alice of Ransom Canyon (Lubbock), Texas; granddaughters Wendy Perry of Denver and Karen Troseth and husband Chris of McKinney, Texas; and son Dennis and wife Clare of Maple Grove, grandson Chris Todd and wife Tiffany of Maple Lake and granddaughter Cynthia of Chanhassen.

Interment of her ashes in Denver will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials are preferred for DeMar staff education, c/o Carolie Poole, RN, DeMar residence, 11777 Xeon Blvd., Coon Rapids, MN 55448.

MeiChen Dallman

Services were Monday, May 5, 2003, for MeiChen Joy Dallman, 54, of Clear Lake, long-time deputy clerk for the city of Rockford.

Chaplain Ronald Freeman officiated at the services at Peterson Chapel, Buffalo. Marlene Mohwinkel was organist and Kathy Bussey-Wolff was the soloist.

Ms. Dallman died Thursday, May 1, in Brooklyn Center. She was born Nov. 23, 1948, in Shanghai, China. Locally she held memberships in Crow River Pride, Pulaski Lake Improvement Association and the Municipal Clerks and Finance Officers Association.

Ms. Dallman is survived by her daughter, Kimberlee Beack of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Mark Meyer Jr., Sarah Beak and Emilee Beack, and other relatives and friends.

Morris A. DeGraw

Services for Morris A. DeGraw, 84, of Elk River were Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Mary Queen of Peace (St. Martin's) 21304 Church Ave., Rogers.

Mr. DeGraw died May 7. He is preceded in death by stepson, Mark Koenig. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Koenig DeGraw; his son, Michael DeGraw; stepchildren, Gary (Elaine) Koenig, Susan (John) Kemmetmueller, and daughter-in-law, Corrine Koenig; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Interment was at St. Martin's Parish Cemetery.

Nordis DeCambaliza

Memorial services for Nordis DeCambaliza, 66, of Tuscon, Ariz., and formerly of Hanover, will be Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the Hanover United Methodist Church.

Friends may call one hour before the service at the church.

Mr. DeCambaliza died Jan. 16.

Thomas J. Miller

Services for Thomas J. Miller, 59, of St. Michael were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo.

Rev. Ruth Ann Ramstad officiated and interment followed at Swedish Mission Cemetery.

Jeanne Dixon was the soloist for the funeral service.

Casket bearers were Shawn Miller, Dave Cardinal, Ron Mills, Glen Schleif, Tony McEachern, Bob Olsen, Frank Worden and Dick Weitzel.

Mr. Miller died Friday, May 2, at his residence.

He was born on May 19, 1943, in Minneapolis the son of Ralph and Margaret McNulty Miller.

Mr. Miller honorably served his country in the U.S. Army.

He was employed for 23 years at Honeywell and Alliant Techsystems. Mr. Miller was the Union Steward of Local 1145.

He loved to be with his family and friends. He also enjoyed the outdoors, camping, planting trees and traveling.

He is survived by loving wife, Judi Miller; children, Angela (Frank) Worden of Minnetonka, Michelle Miller of San Rafael, Calif., Cheryl Miller of San Anselmo, Calif., and Shawn (Cheri) Miller of Bayport; a granddaughter, Josephine Miller; sisters and a brother, Jeanne Johnson of Minneapolis, Margie Weitzel of Rogers and Robert Miller of Mound; stepchildren, Todd Yantes of Savage, Tawnya (Steve) Stark of South Haven and Tami (Dave) Cardinal of Champlin; step grandchildren, Travis and Nicole; Jacob and Garrett; Christopher and Jesse; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Margaret Miller; an infant brother, Richard Miller; and a brother, Ralph Miller Jr.

Gerald Dean Mortensen

Services for Gerald Dean Mortensen, 66, were Monday, May 5, 2003, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Strandquist, Minn.

Rev. David Pretty officiated and interment was in Mission Cemetery in Strandquist.

Mr. Mortensen died Thursday, May 1, 2003, at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls. He was born March 12, 1937 in Argyle, Minn., the son of Carl P. and Elizabeth J. (Betts) Mortensen. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith and attended various schools in the area. He entered the United States Army Jan. 12, 1955 and was honorably discharged Dec. 17, 1957. On Feb. 24, 1962, he was united in marriage to Carol H. Matter. The couple lived in Delano until January of 1983, when they moved to Strandquist.

Mr. Mortensen worked for Marshall County in maintenance. He was a precision machinist and electrician and he also worked for Tonka Toys.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, trapshooting, making picture frames and he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 466 in Strandquist and a life member of the North America Hunting Club.

He is survived by wife, Carol of Strandquist; children, Debs (Zachary) Zachman of Delano, Randy (Leta) Mortensen of Montrose and Allen (Sandy) Mortensen of Montrose; grandchildren, Adam and Jeff Zachman, Brent Stolka and Justin Giese; mother-in-law, Helen Matter of Delano; brothers and sisters, Myrtle Holmstrom of S. St. Paul, Andy (Shirley) Mortensen of Oglivie, Dale (Carol) Mortensen of Heron, S.D., Arthur Mortensen of Thief River Falls, Orville (Jane) Mortensen of Montrose and Karen (Kenneth) Peterson of Ellsworth, Wis. and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sister, Blanche Waterworth; brothers, Allen, Melvin and John Mortensen; parents and brother-in-law, Leonard Holmstrom.

Kristi Pender

A celebration of life for Kristi Pender, 34, of Champlin was held recently at the Pillsbury Auditorium at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Miss Pender died May 8, 2003, at her home. Her incredibly brave journey with breast cancer has finally ended after 21 months. Her perseverance to fight and ability to smile through the toughest times gave insight to her strength, her constant caring for others was a true testament to her character.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Pender, and her grandparents. She is survived by her mother, Joan Butler of Waterford, Mich., sister Debi Hall of Questa, N.M., brother Tom Pender of Macon, Ga., aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends.

Miss Pender was an RN at Hennepin County Medical Center's Emergency Department for the past eight years, a place where after traveling across the country she was able to call home.

Memorials preferred to Kristi Pender Nursing Fund.

Leonard Pokorny

Leonard Pokorny, 92, Champlin, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at his residence in Champlin overlooking the Mississippi River.

Mr. Pokorny was born Nov. 9, 1910, to Joseph and Mary (Soltis) Pokorny in Silver Lake, Minn. He never married.

Mr. Pokorny worked as an assistant to the Vice President for Chrysler Corporation in Detroit. When he retired he moved to Champlin. During his retirement years, he loved gardening, planting flowers, arts, crafts, gourmet cooking and hosting neighbors for coffee.

Mr. Pokorny requested that no memorial service be conducted in his honor. His interment was hosted with a private ceremony at the South Elmdale Congregational Church Cemetery, Holdingford, Minn.

Mr. Pokorny is survived by his brother, Ernie and (Ann); sister-in-law, Marie Pokorny; three nieces, Patty (Mike) McKenzie, Phyllis Pauly and Elaine Pokorny; many loving relatives, close neighbors and friends. He is preceded in death by two brothers.
