Eugene Ellingson

Services for Eugene Ellingson, 69, of St. Michael were at 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2003, at St. Michael Catholic Church.

Mr. Ellingson, a car enthusiast and founder of the Ellingson Car Museum in Rogers, died Friday, March 28, of cancer of the esophagus.

The first car Mr. Ellingson restored was a Model T Ford, stowed in a farmer's woods for more than 20 years before he got his hands on it. The body was rusted away, so Ellingson, then 14, built a wooden platform to sit on and somehow got the engine to run.

Always fascinated with things mechanical, he went on to co-found a fork-lift company in Maple Plain and opened the Ellingson Car Museum off Interstate 94 in Rogers in 1994. More than 50 of his favorite cars are on display there, plus dozens of other people's cars, trucks and motorcycles, from the 1910s through the muscle cars of the '60s and '70s.

He and Les Nielsen were business partners for 35 years at the company they founded, Herc-U-Lift Inc., which employs 130 people. They were boyhood friends in Euclid, Minn., and as far as Nielsen knows, Ellingson always loved engines.

His wife of 46 years, Clarice Ellingson, said, "As the years went by, he was always looking for some certain car."

He bought and sometimes traded but rarely sold, she said. Soon the back yard was full of vehicles, then two Quonset huts. About 10 years ago, she and their son, Scott, encouraged him to open a car museum. "We had to," she said. "There was no place to put all those cars."

Scott Ellingson said he remembers her telling his dad, "Let's build a museum so other people can enjoy your cars and you can get them out of the shed." He said about 25,000 people a year tour the museum, which Scott Ellingson will continue to run. Historical videos, pictures, memorabilia and a doll collection also are on display.

Some of Ellingson's favorite cars were a 1950 Mercury (similar to one he and his wife had when they married), a 1928 Dodge (like the one his uncle once had) and a 1957 Olds (which his children bought for him one Father's Day).

He had another 100 cars at home that he had planned to fix in retirement, "but that changed when he got sick," his wife said.

In addition to his wife and son, Scott, of Elk River, survivors include five brothers, Virgil of Fargo, N.D., Alfred of Delano, Danny of Fridley, Arlyn of Hopkins and Sylvan of Loveland, Colo.; two sisters, Mary Marden of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Cindy Field of Billings, Mont.; two more sons, Bruce of Rogers and Brad of Maple Grove; two daughters, Coulette Westman of Plymouth and Lori Dematteis of St. Paul; and three grandchildren.

The family thanked the staff at Fairview University Medical Center and Parker Hughes Cancer Center for their kindness, gentle care and support.

Jim Eull

Perhaps the greatest testimony to the service dedicated by Jim Eull were the numbers of neighboring fire departments that showed their respect at his funeral Saturday, April 5.

Eull served 26 years for the St. Michael Fire and Rescue Department, including 12 years as chief.

Besides so many fire department members from St. Michael and elsewhere, St. Michael Catholic Church was also filled with friends and family that gathered to pay their respect to a widely popular community member.

Eull, 56, of St. Michael died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, following a 13-month courageous battle with cancer. He died peacefully in the arms of his wife Raeann surrounded by his children.

Current St. Michael Fire Chief Charlie Thompson gave Eull credit for "pretty much steering the department in the direction it's going today," he said. "He was an asset to the department and left behind a huge amount of friends, and we'll miss him dearly."

Eull's cousin and fellow longtime fire department member Joe Eull recounts similar fond memories.

"Jim was a super guy. Everybody liked him," Joe Eull said. "Whatever recognition he gets is well deserved, especially for what he's done for the community."

Joe Eull also recalled Jim Eull's sense of humor, including being the target of inter-department pranks. "The people on the department enjoyed ribbing Jim because he always had a look on his face like he was dumbfounded but could take it," he said. "Jim was the kind of guy who was never mad about anything and always had a great disposition."

Jim Eull was born Oct. 24, 1946, in Buffalo the son of Roderick A. "Bob" and Florence E. Braun Eull.

He graduated from St. Michael Catholic High School in 1964 and later attended Minneapolis Technical College after honorably serving his country in the U.S. Navy from 1965-69.

On April 30, 1977, James Eull and Raeann Tiernan were joined in holy marriage at St. Albert's Catholic Church in Albertville. God blessed their marriage with four children.

Eull was a lifelong member of the St. Michael Catholic Church, where he served as an usher and a former member of the Church Council. He also belonged to The Knights of Columbus Council 4174 and American Legions Post 567.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was instrumental in the building of the St. Michael-Albertville Hockey Arena. He was always willing to help others and was an inspiration to everyone, his family said.

Eull was employed for 18 years at B & D Plumbing and Heating in St. Michael.

He is survived by wife, Raeann Eull; children, Kurt, Brent, KarIa and Mark Eull, all of St. Michael; sisters and brothers, Judith Jakubiec of Monticello, Gerald (Rebecca) Eull of Eagle River, Alaska, Anthony (Julie) Eull of St. Michael, Steven Eull of Hopkins, Benita Eull of Albertville, Roderick (Debra) Eull Jr. of Dent, Duane (Brenda) Eull of Monticello and Sandra (Tim) Hesley of Big Lake; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ken and Muriel Tiernan of Albertville; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Randy (Margie) Tiernan, Rick Tiernan, Rollie (Renae) Tiernan, Roger (Anne) Tiernan, Ron Tiernan and Russ Tiernan; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Florence Eull March 26, 1996, and Roderick "Bob" Eull April 8, 1997.

A Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, April 5, at the St. Michael Catholic Church. Rev. Michael Becker was the Celebrant and interment with military rites followed at St. Michael Cemetery.

The St. Michael Fire Department served as honorary casket bearers.

Tony Eicher, Jim Eicher, Rollie Tiernan, Chris Jakubiec, Tony Eull and Dennis Daleiden served as casket bearers.

"He was always a man with a smile," Thompson said. "It was just many positive things about Jim. He'll be missed by all of us."
