Inez Kathryn Berg
Inez Kathryn Berg of Canyon, died Fri., July 28, 2006 at Lakeshore. She was 92.
She was born in Virginia, Minn. Inez married Ole Berg on June 12, 1937 in Proctor. She worked as a COTA for St. Mary’s Medical Center and at the Benedictine Health Care Center for many years. She served as the organist at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Canyon for 60 years. She was active in the Esther Circle and the Primetimers Senior Group.
Inez was preceded in death by her husband Ole, daughter Lois Berg, grandson Steven Chase, brothers Roland, Mervin, and James Nybor, and her sister Gladys Maibie.
Survivors include her daughters Carol (Rodger) Chase of Grand Rapids, Judith Berg of Canyon, and Kathy (David) Smith of Minneapolis, grandchildren Richard and Diane Chase, sister Delores Krmpotich of Duluth, and many nieces and nephews.
Services were Tuesday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Canyon. Burial in the church cemetery.
Sister Jean Patrick Bennett
Sister Jean Patrick Bennett OSB (Mary Alice) of St. Scholastica Monastery, who taught at St. Rose School among others, died on Fri., Aug. 4, 2006, at the Monastery. She was 89.
She entered the Duluth Benedictines in Sept. 1935 and professed monastic vows in 1937. She was in her 69th year of monastic profession. Sister Jean Patrick was born on Oct. 3, 1916, in Chicago, Ill., and received her high school education at Villa Sancta Scholastica Academy. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from The College of St. Scholastica. In 1993, she returned to St. Scholastica Monastery where she served as Director of the Enrichment Center, as sacristan, and as clerk in the Monastery Transportation Office.
Sister Jean Patrick was preceded in death by her parents John and Delia (Heraty), her brother John, and her twin sisters Patricia (Parkin) and Eugenia (Baer).
She is survived by nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as by the Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery.
The Mass of Christian burial was on Tues., Aug. 8, 2006 with Father Gabriel Baltes presiding. Burial in Gethsemane Cemetery.
Ralph A. Nelson
Linda (Tim) Olson of Proctor is in bereavement following the death of her father, Ralph A. Nelson. The Duluth resident passed away Thurs., Aug. 3, 2006 at the Veterans Home in Silver Bay. He was 80.
He was born Nov. 17, 1925 in Duluth to Sven and Hannah Nelson. Ralph left school at the age of 17 to join the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Germany and France. Ralph worked at Fitger’s Brewing Company for 27 years and then at Holy Rosary Cathedral and School for 17 years retiring in 1990. He married Lois C. Minor on June 28, 1975.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Lennart and twins Holger and Harold, and one niece.
Ralph is also survived by his loving wife of 31 years Lois, children Carolyn (Melvin) Doherty of Becker, Larry R. (Fawn) of Duluth, Craig (Connie) of Eau Claire, Wis., Richard (friend, Peg) of Hudson, Wisc., and Brian (Michelle) of Eau Claire, Wisc., stepchildren Robert (Yalu) Minor of Las Vegas, Jeanne Minor of Duluth and William (Carol) Minor of Superior, and devoted stepdaughter Peggy of Duluth, 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren; sister Elizabeth (Matthew) McMahon of Two Harbors, sister-in-law Doris Nelson, and a niece and six nephews.
Services were Tues., Aug. 8, 2006 at First Memorial Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Dwight Solberg officiating. Burial at Forest Hill Cemetery with military rites accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.
Darryl Edward Lange
Jeff (Anne) Lange of Saginaw is mourning the death of his father, Darryl Edward Lange. He died Sat., July 29, 2006 at St. Mary’s Medical Center after a courageous battle following surgery. He was 80.
Darryl was born April 14, 1926 in Superior to George and Maude Lange. He graduated from Superior Central High School, the University of Wisconsin at Superior, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison where he received his Master’s Degree in Microbiology. His years of education were interrupted by his service in the U.S. Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army where he served two years in Korea. He taught high school and college in Calif., before being employed by The City of Hope Medical Center doing research. While there, he invented and patented two medical devices that are used today. He married Jackie Feb. 2, 1962. In 1963, they started a nursing home business that they operated for 10 years. In 1974, Darryl retired but also ran a beef farm and successfully owned and operated the Lake Nebagamon Dairy Queen for several years.
He was preceded in death by his parents George and Maude, sisters Georgia and LaVonne, a brother Ray, and his first wife Wanda Christensen.
Darryl is also survived by his loving wife Jackie, daughter Rene of Eureka, Calif. and daughter Kendra (Robert) of Lake Minnesuing, and grandchildren Chloe and Caeden Lange.
Services were Mon., Aug. 7, 2006 in Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake Nebagamon.
Arlie Ellen Kartvedt (Niemi) Moen
Services will be held today for Arlie Ellen Kartvedt (Niemi) Moen, wife of former Twig Bethlehem Lutheran Pastor Marshall Moen. She died Sat., Aug. 5, 2006.
She was born to the late Anna and Mikal Kartvedt in Duluth on Oct. 4, 1934. Arlie graduated from Denfeld High School in 1952 and from St. Luke’s Nursing School in 1955. She obtained her MBA from Metro State University in Minneapolis in 1986, but her true talents graced the piano and organ in church related activities her entire life. Arlie participated in the DFL party at a number of different levels.
She is survived by her husband Marshall, children Joanna (Roger) Regnier and Greg (Tracy) Niemi, step-children Peter (Nancy) Moen, Luther (Jane) Moen, and Solveig (Sean) Brown, grandchildren Erica and Maria Regnier and Geoffrey, Cameron, Ethan and Laura Niemi, step-grandchildren Peter and Paige Moen, Janna, Kaylee and Maya Moen, Zoe and Parker Brown, and Bob and Ben Stark, and brother Maynard (Marianne) Kartvedt of San Diego, Calif.
Visitation is from 12 noon until the 1 p.m. service, today, Thursday in Zion Lutheran Church, 2431 West and 3rd Street in Duluth. Inurnment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.
Edward Kalland
Edward Kalland died Sat., Aug. 5, 2006 at Chris Jensen Nursing Home. He was 80.
Ed was born Oct. 7, 1925 to Olaf and Clara Kalland in Duluth. He served in the Navy Seabees during World War II, and was employed at Minnesota Power for 35 years. Ed was very active in organizing the Woodland Youth recreational programs and the Scenic City News in his earlier years. He was an avid golfer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Isabelle Anderson.
Ed is survived by his wife Ruth, sons Douglas (Nancy) and Steve (Candy), grandchildren Christina Elberling and Ian Kalland, and three great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Raymond R. Kuehn
William Kuehn of Proctor is saddened by the death of his brother, Raymond R. Kuehn of Duluth. He died Mon., Aug. 7, 2006 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was 70.
He was born March 4, 1936 in Duluth to Henry and Euphemia (Ojala) Kuehn. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict. He also was a member of the 148th Air National Guard from 1973 until his retirement in 1993. Raymond married Roberta Holliday on May 9, 1959 in Duluth. He was a driver for Coca-Cola until he retired in 1991. Raymond was a member of First Presbyterian Church and of the Harbor Squares Square Dance Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Roy Kuehn.
He is also survived by his wife Roberta, son Robert (Christina) of Cottage Grove, daughters Leslie (Chuck) Meyer of Austin, Marilyn (Jason) Bernard of Sudbury, Mass., and Christine Kuehn of Duluth, one other brother Howard (Marjorie) of Duluth, grandchildren Brianna, Adam and Patrick Kuehn, Garrison Meyer and Spencer Bernard, and many relatives and friends.
Visitation is today, Thursday 5-7 p.m. in Dougherty Funeral Home. The funeral service is 1 p.m. Friday in First Presbyterian Church. Interment at Forest Hill Cemetery.
Blanche H. Vanneste
Services will be held today for Blanche H. Vanneste. The Proctor resident died Sun,, Aug. 13, 2006 in St. Luke’s Hospital. She was 87.
She was born in Moose Lake on Feb. 12, 1919 to Benjamin and Mary (Kimemske) Zuiwicki. Prior to her marriage, Blanche had been employed with JC Penney. In 1972, Blanche married Robert Leonard Vanneste. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening.
Blanche is preceded in death by her husband Robert, who passed away on September 25, 2005, her stepdaughter, Barb MacDonald, who passed away on May 3, 2003, her parents, and sisters Evelyn and Louise.
Survivors include her stepdaughter Terrie (Steve) Carlson of Proctor, her sister Florence and brothers Don and Ernie Zuiwicki, grandchildren Kim MacDonald of Toivola, Tammy (Frank) Ziesmer of Duluth, Tony (Laura) Carlson of Proctor and Lori (Randy) Reinke of Saginaw, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
Visitation today, Thursday, 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Funeral Service in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial will be at Oneota Cemetery.
Frederick (Fred) R. Garlinghouse
Lorraine Miller of Proctor is mourning the death of her son Frederick (Fred) R. Garlinghouse of Carthage, Ind., formerly of Duluth. He died Mon., Aug. 7, 2006 at the age of 63.
Fred was born in Portland, Oregon to Albert and Lorraine Garlinghouse. He grew up in Duluth and graduated from Denfeld High School. He was a truck driver for Werner Trucking, and earned an award for driving one million miles with no accidents.
Fred is also survived by his daughter Lori (Paul) Rathbun, grandsons Ryan, Alex and Stephan Rathbun, sister Carol (Scott) Gilbertson, nephews Robert and Greg Carter, and former wife Kathy.
Burial service will be held in Aitkin at a later date.
Edward S. Lincowski
Richard (Zandra) LaLonde of Midway and Michael (Nicole) LaLonde of Duluth are in bereavement following the death of their stepfather Edward S. Lincowski. The Island Lake resident lost an 11-month battle with carcinosarcoma Sun., Aug. 13, 2006 at St. Luke’s Hospice surrounded by his family. He was 64.
He was born July 1, 1942 in St. Paul to Edward A. and Margaret (Price) Lincowski. He worked for MN DOT for 38 years in Engineering until his retirement in 1996. He married Linda Wotczak on March 25, 1994. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church-Gnesen; United Northern Sportsmen’s Club and Reservoir Riders Snowmobile Club.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Georgene in 1992 and his father in 2001.
He is also survived by his wife Linda, mother Marge, daughters Clara (Steve) Welch of N. St. Paul, Lyne Zebrasky of Wyoming, Mn, Brenda (fiancé Jeff Mickle) Lincowski of Lino Lakes, brothers Richard (Melodie) of Park Rapids, Steve (Vi) of Maplewood, Peter (Karen) of Tucson, Ariz., sister Shirley (Jim) McCarthy of Sioux Falls, SD, nine grandchildren, his pal Daisey Dog, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A Memorial Mass will be held today, Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church-Gnesen. Visitation one hour prior to Mass.
