Mable Sundquist
Mable Sundquist of Duluth, who formerly resided in Proctor during the 50’s and 60’s, died Sun., Oct. 15, 2006, at Wesley Residence. She was 81.

She was born in Duluth on Aug. 7, 1925 to Larkin and Alma Hall. Mable was a Life Member of VFW post 137 Auxiliary, she had also been a volunteer on the Harborview citizen patrol for 10 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert Sundquist Sr., son Robert Sundquist Jr., great-granddaughter Alyssa Zebott, one sister, and two brothers.

Mable is survived by children Carol Zebott, Sally (Chuck) Stoddard, Richard (Peggy) Sundquist, Elsie Switzer, and Bonnie Frederick of St. Paul, 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, brothers Leonard Hall of Proctor, Leroy Hall, William Hall, Ramon Hall of Little Falls, and Larkin Hall of Alaska, and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service was held with Chaplain Gary Miller officiating.

Larkin J. Hall
Larkin J. Hall, who was a Proctor High School graduate, died Wed., Nov. 1, 2006 from a heart attack at the South Peninsula Hospital in Homer, Alaska. The Anchor Point resident was 72.

Larkin was born Nov. 20, 1933 to Larkin and Alma (Gish) Hall in Duluth. After his high school graduation, he entered the US Army and served for two years and then went into Army Reserve for 24 years. He retired from the 367th Engineer Battalion. He worked in the DM&IR railroad in Proctor as a car inspector for 34 years. He resided in Anchorage from 1989 to 1995, then moved to Libby, Montana where he married his wife Viola in 1997. Together they moved to Homer in 2002 where he worked at Safeway. Larkin enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing cards and hunting. He was involved with the Little League, Boy Scouts of America, and belonged to the VFW. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Anchor Point.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife of nine years Viola of Anchor Point, son and daughter-in-law Larkin John and Wendy Hall of Proctor, daughters and sons-in-law Denise Houle of Cloquet, Debbie and Dave Kratsas of Anchor Point and Lori and Brian Mitchell of Anchorage, brothers Leonard Hall of Proctor, Ramon, Leroy and Bill Hall, all of Little Falls, 14 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

At his request, a funeral was not held.

Carol Marie (Mallon) Zebott
Carol Marie (Mallon) Zebott, who had been a resident of Proctor and attended the Proctor Public Schools through her freshman year, died unexpectedly, Sun., Nov. 5, 2006 in her Midtowne Manor II home. She was 62.

Carol was a 1962 graduate of Denfeld High School and a graduate of the Regional Occupational Program in Calif., receiving a degree in general office studies. She had been an employee of Contra Costa County, Calif. for 15 years. Carol was a life member of VFW Post No. 137 Auxiliary and a former member of Temple Baptist Church. She enjoyed her grandchildren, family gatherings and shopping the day after Thanksgiving.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents and brother Robert Sundquist Jr.

Survivors include her daughters Marilyn (David) Lynch of Floodwood and Cheryl (Howard) England of Otsego, siblings Sally (Chuck) Stoddard and Dickie (Peggy) Sundquist, both of Duluth, and Elsie Switzer and Bonnie Frederick, both of St. Paul, five grandchildren, four uncles, many nieces and nephews, and the father of her children Bruce Zebott of Texas.

Burial in Hermantown Cemetery.

Debbie J. (Norberg) Garthus
Debbie J. (Norberg) Garthus died Wednesday, November 15, 2006 in her Saginaw home. She was 54.

She was born April 17, 1952 in Two Harbors, MN to Morris and Grace (Zimmerman) Norberg. She was a longtime employee of Kmart working as the shipping/receiving supervisor. Debbie also worked at SMDC in the billing dept.

Debbie was preceded in death by her parents; son, Ron Garthus, Jr., and sister, Gina Perrault.

She is survived by her special friend Denny Thompson; sons, Richard (Lori) Norberg of St. Paul Park, Minn., Kevin Garthus of Duluth and his children, Dakota, Angel and Kevin, Jr.; Henry (Chally) Thompson of Cloquet, Minn, daughter, Jennifer (Steve) Thompson of Duluth; daughter-in-law, Amy Garthus of Duluth; brother, Frank (Edna) Hicks of Proctor; and sisters, Ethel (Kenneth) Eichstadt of Beaver Bay, Minn., Pat Becker of Maple, Wisc., Cindy Page of Duluth, and Lissa Lake of Duluth.

A memorial service was held Sat., Nov. 18 at Dougherty Funeral Home.

Ervin Henry Gerads
Three area sisters, Carol Skare of Proctor, Elaine (Marvin) Spikberg of Saginaw, and Janice (Wallace) Hiller of Hermantown, are mourning the loss of their father Ervin Henry Gerads of Bovey. He died Tues., Nov. 7, 2006 at his home. He was 65.

Ervin was born on Feb. 17, 1941 in Avon, Minn., to Norbert and Lurene (Schellin) Gerads. He graduated from Central High School in Duluth in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army as an M.P. from 1960 until 1963. On Jan. 6, 1962, he was united in marriage to Sharon L. Brown in Duluth. Ervin was employed with Arrowhead Equipment Company in Duluth for 38 years. Following his retirement in 2002, Ervin and Sharon moved from Hermantown to Bovey. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW Post 1720, Swampsiders Snowmobile Club, and MIW Drifter CB Club.

Ervin was preceded in death by his parents and brother Arnold Gerads.

He is also survived by his wife Sharon, daughters Kimberly Gerads of Virginia and Brenda (Vince) Mundell of Iron, son Larry Gerads of Oklahoma City, Okla., stepson Charlie (Maureen) Sabrowsky of Cannon Falls, and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Sat., Nov. 11, 2006 in the Swampsiders Snowmobile Club in Bigfork.

Thomas R. Rinker
Thomas R. Rinker, lifelong resident of the Proctor area, passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2006, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was 81.

He was born October 29, 1925 in Proctor to Donald and Edna Rinker. Tom was a graduate of Proctor High School. He served in the U.S. Navy, during W.W.II. Tom was a machinist for D.M. &I.R. Railroad, retiring in 1983, after over 40 years of service.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie in 1995; and a daughter, Dawn Toupin.

He is survived by his children, Pat (Peggy) LeBlanc, Jim LeBlanc, Joan (William) Eng, John LeBlanc, Leslie Koopman, Tommy Rae (Tom) Easty, Robin (Jerry) Shelton, and Lynn (Brad) Travena; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Tom requested there be no funeral service.

Melvin “Mel” Arthur Vaux
Funeral services were held for Melvin “Mel” Arthur Vaux in Shafter. He died on Tues., Oct. 31, 2006. He was 85.

Mel was born on Sept. 20, 1921, in Hillman, Minn. to Elroy and Ruby Vaux. His family moved to Duluth, where he attended Pike Lake School in grades 1 through 8, and three years of Proctor schools. He graduated from Central High School in Duluth. The family was active in 4-H work and were members of the old Jackson School Club on the Miller Trunk Highway. In 1943 he enlisted in the USAF, training with B17 and B29 bombers. At the end of WW II he went to Seattle, Wash. and then moved to Shafter where he worked for Nikkel Iron Works. There he met Laura Bender and they were married Feb. 28, 1947. In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s he owned and drove Midget Race Cars. For many years, he owned and operated Mel’s Farm Service in Shafter. In 1968, he and his wife moved to Boulder, Nev., where he opened a machine shop, and in 1984, he moved to Arizona, where he helped to plan and build an airpark. He loved to fly his 1946 Ercoupe. He was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Shafter.

Mel is survived by his wife of 59 years Laura, daughter Janice Williams of Bakersfield, granddaughters Erin, Tara and Kristan Williams, all of Bakersfield, sisters Florence Conrad of Stockton and Lula Jordan of Temecula, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.

Interment was at Shafter Memorial Park.

Reginald Marshall Mead
Reginald Marshall Mead, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1937, passed away Mon., Nov. 20, 2006. The Maplewood resident, formerly of Wadena, was 88,

Reg was born on Nov. 18, 1918 in Adrian to Elihu Carter and Dora (Hubbard) Mead. He graduated from Duluth State Teacher’s College in 1941. After one year of teaching and coaching, Reg entered the Army and served in the European Theater during World War II. He married Kathryn Mary Peirce Oct. 24, 1946 in Staples. They had 50 good years together. They made their home in Wadena, where he taught school and they raised four children while being active in the United Methodist Church, Masonry, Rotary, Eastern Star, VFW, American Legion, and coaching school sports. Reg is in the Minnesota Coaches Hall of Fame for tennis and won regional and national teacher of the year honors. He enjoyed competition, was respected by all, missed by many and survived the 1918 influenza, Great Depression, World War II, three decades of junior high teaching, bypass surgery, many years of kidney dialysis and almost everything else.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Dec. 5, 1996, his parents, brother Robert, sister-in-law Nancy, and brothers-in-law Richard Johnson and Frances Peirce.

Reg is survived by his loving children Barbara (Larry) Nelson, Charles (Audrey), Marshall (Shirley) and Mary (Mike) McKay, brother Don, sister Marjory Johnson, sister-in-law Jean (Richard) Dodge, brother-in-law Edgar (Arlene) Peirce, 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, many nephews and nieces and many many friends.

Burial was at the Wadena Cemetery.

Edna A. Johnson
Cecelia Jackson of Proctor is saddened by the loss of her sister, Edna A. Johnson. The Eagle River, Alaska resident died of natural causes Thurs., Nov. 16, 2006 at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. She was 89.

Mrs. Johnson was born July 31, 1917 in Duluth. She was a past volunteer for Morning Star Adult Day Care in Palmer, Alaska. After numerous trips to Alaska in the 70’s to visit their children, Edna and her husband finally moved to Palmer in 1979.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard Johnson, sister Irene Delich, and brother Harold “Pete” Dahlberg.

Survivors also include her sons and daughters-in-law Dennis and Linda Johnson, Paul and Joan Johnson, both of Eagle River, Darrell Johnson and Laurine Knott of Seattle, Wash., and Thomas Johnson of Palmer, daughter Gloria Snodgrass of Palmer, granddaughters and their spouses Shanda and Reid McDonald and Briana and Sam Theis, all of Eagle River, grandsons Brandon Snodgrass of Anchorage, Tyler Snodgrass of Eagle River, Ryan Snodgrass and Travis Snodgrass of Squaw Valley, Alaska, granddaughter Heather Johnson of Eagle River, great-grandsons Sutton, Cameron and Gavin of Eagle River, great-granddaughters Breghan and Claire of Eagle River, sister-in-law Alice Dahlberg of Duluth, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life was held Sat., Nov. 25 at Community Covenant Church of Eagle River with Rev. Susan Halvor officiating. Pallbearers were Dennis Johnson, Paul Johnson, Darrell Johnson, Thomas Johnson, Reid McDonald and Sam Theis. Burial at the Palmer Pioneer Cemetery.

Fred “Todd” Stopnik
Paul Stopnik of Proctor is mourning the loss of his brother Fred “Todd” Stopnik of Huntington Beach, Calif. and Lake Havesu City, Ariz. Fred passed away Wed., Nov. 22, 2006 in the Orange Coast Memorial Hospital in Fountain Valley, Calif. He was 74.

He was born in Duluth on Nov. 10, 1932 to Fred and Alice Stopnik and graduated from Proctor High School in 1950. He married JoAnn Anderson on Sept. 13, 1952. Todd retired from Boeing Aircraft in 1998 after 33 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Katherine.

He is also survived by his wife of 54 years, JoAnn, children Todd (Jonna), Scott (Julie), Becky (Lester) all of Huntington Beach, Calif. and Randy (Karen) of Maui, Hawaii, 19 grandchildren, 7 1/2 great-grandchildren, another brother Bill of Bullhead City, Ariz.

A private celebration of his life was held yesterday at his son’s home in Huntington Beach. He will be sadly missed by all. He was a great husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
