Norman K. Skeie
Norman K. Skeie, the brother of Irene Moran of Proctor, passed away February 22, 2006 in Quincy, Calif.

He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Being a World War II Army Veteran, he was buried in the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.

George Clarence Harnell
George Clarence Harnell, who had been a Grand Lake resident most of his life and was a 1918 fire survivor, died Dec. 8, 2006 at Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center in Duluth. He was 97.

He was born on Nov. 4, 1909 to Arvid and Mary Harnell. George married Ruth Helen Johnson on June 23, 1937 at Grand Lake Church and they enjoyed 68 wonderful years together until her death August 25, 2005 at the age of 88. George was a member of New Life Covenant Church of Twig for many years. In earlier years, he and his family lived on a dairy farm. He left the farm at 27. He began working as a carpenter for Robert Swenson and later became partners with Ed Opien for 12 years. He was a carpenter of Local 361 for 45 years and to date was the oldest living member. In 1936, he designed and built his own home at Grand Lake and in 1966 designed and built a second home on Willow Street. He was a former member of Grand Lake Covenant Church for over 50 years and a Sunday School Superintendent for 15 years. He picked up the children himself; for those who had no way to Sunday School. When they left to go to New Life Covenant Church at Twig he helped with remodeling and carpentry work and worked in the flower gardens. He sang a solo at age 97 by himself with no music. That was his last Sunday at his beloved church until this day.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Arvid and Mary Harnell; sister, Elsie Johnson; and brother, Alvin Harnell. Survivors include his children, Roger (Janine) Harnell of California and Marge (Gary) Billman of Duluth; brother, Harold Harnell of California; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Blum of California and Phyllis Johnson of Tennessee; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; plus many nieces and nephews.

A service was held Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006 in New Life Covenant Church, Twig. Pastor Bradley Shannon officiating. Burial will be in Grand Lake Cemetery.

Melvin W. Johnson
Melvin W. Johnson, who moved to Munger in 1958 where he farmed with his parents until 1990, died Mon., Dec. 4, 2006 in the Bayshore Health Care Center in Duluth. He was 66.

The Brookston resident was born Jan. 30, 1940 in Finlayson to Niilo and Fannie (Lundgren) Johnson. He grew up in Duluth and attended Homecroft Elementary and Duluth Central High School. He also worked at the Weyerhauser Box Plant.

Melvin is survived by his sister Marian (Ronald) Carver of Saginaw, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service was held Fri., Dec. 8, 2006 in Cloquet. Burial at Finlayson Cemetery.

Lillian C. Gulbranson
Lillian C. Gulbranson passed away peacefully on Sun., Dec. 10, 2006 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Her loving family was at her side. She was 91.

Lillian was born in Duluth on April 5, 1915 to Charles and Selma (Peterson) Sundell. Lillian was united in marriage to Raymond Gulbranson on November 21, 1934. She worked as a cook for the Munger Elementary School for 25 years. She then worked for the US Post Office until 1980. She also catered many weddings and parties. She was a devoted member of Hope Lutheran Church, and was involved in the Ladies Aid and the Solway Senior Citizens. Lillian loved her family, gardening and working outdoors.

She was preceded in death by her husband (1980).

Lillian is survived by daughters Donna (Tubby) Christianson and Marilyn (Bill) Schnobrich, grandchildren Kent Christianson, Lana (Paul) Roberts, Lee Schnobrich, Tim (Nici) Schnobrich, and Gina (Paul) Rockstad, great-grandchildren Tyler, Matt, Christopher and Jace, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Wed., Dec. 13, 2006 in the Hope Lutheran Church, with Reverend Walter Lehenbauer officiating. Interment in Sunrise Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hope Lutheran Church.

Edith Irene Palmer
Edith Irene Palmer, formerly of Esko and Cloquet, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006 at Edgewood Vista in Hermantown. She was 82.

She was born Nov. 1, 1924 in Duluth, the daughter of Joel and Leonne Dougherty. Edith attended Homecroft School in Woodland and she married Lawrence Palmer on November 10, 1945. Edith previously lived in Esko and was a teacher for the handicapped children in Cloquet, retiring in 1985. Following her retirement, she moved to McGregor then to Cloquet where she lived until moving to Edgewood Vista. Edith was a member of the Carlton VFW Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence on May 22, 1994; a daughter, Carol Walsh; one great grandson, Patrick Booth; five sisters and four brothers.

Edith is survived by a daughter, Diana (Glen) Nynas of Saginaw; sons, Dave (Diane) Palmer of Cloquet and Gary (Linda) Palmer of St. Cloud; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; sister, Betty Samarzia of Duluth; and brothers, Don (Carol ‘Kit’) Dougherty and Steve Dougherty, both of Proctor, and Bruce (Sue) Dougherty of Ft. Wayne, Ind.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006. Burial will be in the spring in Hillside Cemetery, Carlton.

Thomas I. Marks, Sr.
Barbara (John) Remes of Proctor is in bereavement following the death of her father, Thomas I. Marks, Sr. He died Mon., Dec. 4, 2006 at the age of 89.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Hilda Marks, brothers Lenard, Joe, Chester, and Douglas, and sister Jessie Lindall.

Thomas is also survived by his wife Neva, sons Thomas (Barbara) Marks, Jr. of Fort Washington, Penn. and Daniel (Mary Ann) Marks, Sr. of Duluth, sister Margie Helland of Minneapolis, seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Lucille M. Stasek
Michelle ‘Mitzi’ Francisco of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother, Lucille M. Stasek of Ashland, Wisc. She passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006 at Forest Haven Assisted Living in Ashland at the age of 88.

Lucy was born April 7, 1918 in Ashland, Wisc., the daughter of Konstant and Magdeline (Juszkiewicz) Tarasewicz. On May 29, 1948 she was united in marriage to Willis F. Stasek at Ashland. Willis worked for the railroad and the couple made their home in Duluth, for many years. While living in Duluth, Lucy worked at View Crest Nursing Home for many years, retiring in 1978. In 1996, Lucy returned to Ashland.

Survivors also include two grandchildren, Michael and Christine Francisco; one brother, Leonard (Judith) Tarasewicz of Superior, Wisc.; one sister, Constance (Gaylord) Reiner of Winneconne, Wisc.; many nieces and nephews and her faithful feline companion, Peanuts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Willis, on Jan 18, 1993; one daughter, Patricia Jacobson; six brothers, Louis, Edmund, Thaddeus, Bernard, Joseph and John Tarasewicz; and one sister, Anna Suminski.

A mass of Christian burial was held Friday, Dec. 8, 2006 in Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Ashland with Father Henry Willenborg, O.F.M. as celebrant. Interment will be at Saint Agnes Cemetery, Ashland, Wisc.

Russell J. Hill
Tracy (Edward) Habermann of Proctor and their sons, Charlie, Russell and Henry; are mourning the death of her father, Russell J. Hill, The Virginia resident died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center. He was 79.

He was born on June 19, 1927, the son of Herman and Ida (Kortes) Hill in Virginia, where he was a resident all his life. He attended Virginia High School and then he entered the Navy in 1944, and served in the Sea Bees on the Island of Guam. After returning home, he finished high school and then attended Virginia Jr. College. On Sept. 10, 1955, he married Evelyn Irene Carey. He was an employee of the United States Steel Co. at Minntac for 37 years, retiring in 1983, as a pit foreman. Russell was a charter member of the former Northland Bible Church, where he had served as a deacon for many years. He was a member of the Northern Gospel Mission and served for many years on their Board of Directors. He was also a member of First Baptist Church of Chisholm.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Ida Hill; two brothers, Harold and Marvin (Mubby); seven sisters, Bernice (Bunny) Crouter, Mildred Ristow, Marjorie Neher, Fern Hill, Lorna Kernen, Shirley Ziegler, and Corinne Krasaway.

He is also survived by his wife of 51 years, Evelyn; three sons, Brian (Julie) of Mt. Iron and their sons, Aaron, Matthew, Lucas and Stephen; David of Minneapolis; Todd (June) of Virginia and their children, Tyler, Casey and Melissa; three brothers, Howard of Britt, James (Verna) of Crosby, and Robert (Shirley) of Wasilla, Alaska; one sister, Valerie (Jack) Sommerville of Madison Heights, Michigan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were in the First Baptist Church in Chisholm. Pastor Dan Erickson will officiate. Graveside services were held Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at the Greenwood Cemetery, Virginia. Funeral Home in Virginia.

Ruth Simula Carlson
Former Proctor Public Schools superintendent Sherman (Louise) Carlson is mourning the death of his mother, Ruth Simula Carlson. The long time resident of Duluth, died Dec. 8, 2006.

She was born in Cloquet, March 19, 1919, to Finnish immigrants, Gust and Hilda (Rantoniemi) Simula and was baptized Rauha Kaarina, which means peace. Her first grade teacher changed her name to Ruth, perhaps believing it to be more American in 1925, and easier to pronounce. Ruth was salutatorian of the 1936 graduating class of Cloquet High School and a member of the National Honor Society. On Sept. 11, 1937 Ruth married Swen B. Carlson, in Duluth, and cherished their 54 years together, until his death in 1991. Ruth served in numerous leadership positions including president of the Irving Elementary PTA and Faith Haven Apartments and treasurer of Our Saviors Evangelical Lutheran Church Living Memorial Foundation. Until recently, she was very involved in activities of the church. Of special note was Ruth’s volunteer counseling, in which she assisted numerous senior citizens in recovering thousands of dollars in Medicare and insurance claims.

Preceding Ruth in death were her parents; brother, Leo Simula in 1965; and husband, Swen in 1991.

Ruth is survived by another son, Laurence ‘Bear’ Carlson of Grand Marais; sister, Elvi Landstrom; and sister-in-law, Mayme Simula of Cloquet; and brother, Vernon Simula of Toivola, Mich.; grandsons, Jay (Billi) Carlson of Grand Marais, Todd (Michelle) Carlson of St. Joseph, Minn.; granddaughter, Sara (Gerald) Undem of Burnsville; great-grandchildren, Cassandra, Jacob, David, Matthew, and Miranda; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service was held Wednesday, Dec. 13, in Our Saviors Evangelical Lutheran Church, Duluth, with Pastors John Hanson and EvaLyn Carlson officiating. Private inurnment at Maple Grove Cemetery, Cloquet.

Wendy Marie Shipley
Wendy Marie Shipley of Magnolia Drive died unexpectedly Mon., Dec. 11, 2006 in her home. She was 42.

She was born on May 25, 1964 in Duluth to Lyle and Anita (Leppi) Shipley. Wendy grew up in Floodwood and was a 1982 graduate of Floodwood High School. She attended college in Brainerd. Wendy worked as a nanny in Chicago and had been an employee of Fond-du-Luth Casino for 13 years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She enjoyed her dog, Kirby.

Wendy was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her loving family and friends, who will miss her greatly.

A memorial service was held in Bell Brothers Funeral Home, Bishop Wade Newton officiating. Inurnment at Forest Hill Cemetery, Floodwood.
