Florence Elizabeth Jannetta
Florence Elizabeth Jannetta, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1939, died Fri., Dec. 29, 2006. She was 85.

The Greeley, Colo., resident was born July 24, 1921 in Pine City, Minn., the daughter of Carl and Hilda (Dahlberg) Klang. She married Gregory P. Jannetta, Sr. in April 1946 in Duluth. Florence lived in Duluth from 1946 to 1972, and then moved to Greeley. She worked for Diamond Caulk Tooling in Duluth during World War II. She also worked as a waitress. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Duluth and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Greeley. She volunteered with RSVP and was honored for 25 years of outstanding service. Florence liked to play cards, sew with the church group, reading and crossword puzzles.

She was preceded in death by parents, son Rod in 1969, brothers Lawrence and Ted, and sisters Martha, Marion and Helen.

Florence is survived by sons Greg (Marie) and Don (Sue) Jannetta, both of Greeley, brothers Herb (Alice) Klang of Proctor, Earl (June) Klang of Greeley, and Ernie (Deloris) Klang of Hermantown, sister Violet Stafford, grandsons Dennis and Nick Jannetta, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held Friday, Jan. 5, 2007 in Greeley.

August Albert Rovello
August Albert Rovello, who worked for the DM&IR Railroad for 39 years retiring in 1991, died Fri., Dec. 29, 2006 in Bayshore Health Center. He was 71.

He was born in St. Paul, and was a longtime area resident. He married Dianne Malinowski in 1960. August enjoyed collecting records, playing guitar, walking and biking.

Survivors include his wife Dianne, sons A. Mark of Duluth and Jerry (Maria) of Proctor, daughter Therese (Rick) Kolenda of Proctor, a sister, and grandson Bryan Rovello.

Services were held Thurs., Jan. 4, 2007 in Bayshore Health Center chapel. Burial at Polish Catholic Cemetery.

Wally Hakomaki
Arlene (Tom) Whittaker of Pike Lake is mourning the death of her father, Wally Hakomaki. He died unexpectedly on Fri., Dec. 15, 2006 of complications from a fall.

Wally was born in Embarrass on Dec. 29, 1923 to Eli and Mae Hakomaki. He grew up in Lakewood Township and in Duluth and attended Central High School. He joined the Army at the onset of World War II and served in the South Pacific. When he returned, he went to work for the DM&IR. He spent many years as a crane operator on the coal dock. He later worked for the Great Lakes Fleet as a seaman. Wally retired in 1990 and devoted his time to fishing, hunting, woodworking and family. He was a lifetime member of the VFW.

Wally lived in the west end of Duluth. He moved back to Wrenshall in 1997. In 2002, they moved to Cromwell to live in a new home on Island Lake built by her son Jay and his wife Julie.

Wally was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bill Hakomaki, and his sisters Inez (Wayne) Risku and Mae (Arvid) Mustonen.

He is survived by his wife Millie, his other daughter Jean Hicks of Lakewood Township, his brother Carl Hakomaki of Pine, Ariz., Millie’s children Alfred (Linda) Gronroos, Mary (Jim) Pasek, Cynthia Gronroos, and Jay (Julie) Gronroos, 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 1 until the 2 p.m. memorial service on Fri., Jan. 12, 2007 in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wrenshall followed by coffee and dessert in the parish hall.

Arthur Hanson
A memorial service will be held today, Thurs., for Arthur Hanson. He died Fri., Jan. 5, 2007, at Chris Jensen. He was 88.

He was born to Hattie and Arthur Hanson in Duluth March 7, 1918. He retired in 1979 from Proctor School District. Arthur enjoyed a long life, hunting and fishing, and he loved dancing with his wife Norma.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Norma Larson Hanson, son Dennis, brothers Arnold, Bernard, Glenn, Robert and Lloyd, and sisters Gladys Loberg and Margaret Swanson.

Arthur is survived by daughter Diane (Ron) Holmes, granddaughter Wendy (Gene) Smith, grandson Ronald D. Holmes, great-granddaughters Ciara and Stephanie, brothers Ted (Lucille) and Leonard, and special friend Rachel.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thurs., Jan. 11, 2007, at Fredenburg Community Chapel. Pastor Glenn Johnson officiating. A reception will follow.

William C. Reinke
William C. Reinke, 82, died Wednesday January 3, 2007 in Duluth.

He is survived by his beloved sister, Vera (Jack) Reinke Nettleton.

At Bill’s request, private services will be held. Services entrusted to the Cremation Society of Minnesota.

Herbert William Huard
Maurice (Darlene) Huard of Proctor is saddened by the death of his brother, Herbert William Huard of Duluth. He died Mon., Jan. 8, 2007 at Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was 78.

He was born on Dec. 6, 1928 in Cloquet to Joseph and Leontine Moquin Huard. Herb attended school in Cloquet and served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1950. Herb married Vivian Honkala on Feb. 3, 1951. He had worked as a barber in Eveleth, Cloquet, Carlton and Duluth for 23 years and then as a salesman for AAA for eight years. Herb played hardball for the Navy and softball for Cloquet and Duluth teams. He was named to the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame in 2001. He also reached championship competitions in golf. Herb was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. In 1976, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Henry, Louis, Wilfred, Alderic, John, and Fr. Theodore, and sister Angelina Hallowell.

He is also survived by his wife of 56 years Vivian, sons Fr. Jeffrey of St. Paul and Jon (Linda Kulas) of Appleton, Wisc., daughters Michele (Dale) Anderson of Duluth, Yvonne (Michael) of Rockwood, Calif. and Annette (Pat) Spehar of Chisago City, a sister Genevieve Ward of Roswell, Ga., 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. The family extends a special thank you to the staff on Willows at Chris Jensen for their wonderful care.

Services were Sat., Jan. 13 in St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Burial at Park Hill Cemetery.

Margaret L. (Olson) Gauthier
Margaret L. (Olson) Gauthier, formerly of Zenith Terrace, died Sun., Jan. 14, 2007, in her Carlton home. She was 82.

She was born in Duluth on Aug. 2, 1924 to Carl and Bertha (Giese) Olson. Margaret was a 1942 Denfeld High School graduate. She married Russell D. Gauthier in Duluth on June 26, 1943. Margaret was employed with Denfeld Super Valu as a Produce Clerk for over 20 years retiring in 1985. She was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church of Esko and a former member of Christ the King Lutheran Church of Duluth. She was also a member of the Evergreen Senior Citizens Club, the Retailers Union 1116, and the Golden Arrow Travel Club.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Russell, who died on Feb., 20, 1990.

She is survived by her daughters Janet Gulbranson of Sun Prairie, Wisc., Barbara (David) Oja of Wayzata, and Debra (Jorma) Rahkola of Barnum, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and sisters Bernice Jedlicka of Hermantown and Dorothy (Richard) Thoreson of Duluth.

A service was held Wed., in St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Esko. Burial at Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown.

Ingrid L. Plesha
Janice (Randy) Sorenson of Saginaw and Cathy (Roger) Carlson of Duluth are mourning the death of their mother Ingrid L. Plesha. The Duluth resident died Sat., Jan. 13, 2007, at St. Eligius Health Care Center after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 87.

She was born on March 24, 1919, in Karlstad, Sweden to Herman and Ester Strom. Ingrid immigrated to this country at the age of five. She lived in Gary-New Duluth for over 60 years. Ingrid worked at the Klear Flax Company of Duluth and for over 20 years at the Stowe School Cafeteria.

Ingrid was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband John Plesha.

She is also survived by four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, brothers Thor (Florence) Strom of Duluth and Enar (Betty) Strom of Cross Lake, a sister Elvera Olson of Duluth, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held today, Thursday, at 3 p.m. in the Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel, 4100 Grand Ave. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service.

Ellen M. (Jacques) Vitcenda
Ellen M. (Jacques) Vitcenda, who was a 1939 Proctor High School graduate, passed away on Wed., Jan. 3, 2007. She was 85.

The St. Paul resident was a teacher for 41 years in Wisconsin and Minnesota - including 27 years in Duluth Public Schools.

She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and sisters, and her husband Harold.

Survivors include her children Mary of St. Paul and Tom of Exeland, Wis., brothers Leonard Jacques of Oak Grove, Mo. and Wayne Jacques of Clear Lake, Wis., and sister Mary Knott of Eau Claire, Wis.

A service was held Mon., Jan. 8, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Radisson, Wis.

A memorial service will be held at a future date (yet to be announced) at Rockwood Place Senior Apartments in St. Paul.

Harold “Hal” Jerome Seeland
Harold “Hal” Jerome Seeland of Saginaw died Sun., Jan. 21, 2007 in Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. He was 80.

He was born September 25, 1926 in Irving Township, Kandiyohi County, Minn., the son of Sivert and Esther Seeland. Hal served in the Navy during World War II with his last tour of duty on the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga. He married Marilyn Larson on April 15, 1952 in Paynesville, Minn. From 1951 until his retirement in 1982, Hal was a truck driver, working for Northwest Roofing and Overhead Door and Raiter Construction. He was a long-time member of St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Saginaw, was retired from Teamsters Local #346, was a former Scout Leader at Grant School, a former Volunteer Fireman for Industrial Township, was a founding board member of Independent School District #710, a member of American Legion Post #71 in West Duluth, Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 in Carlton and the Teamsters Retirement Club. Hal enjoyed fishing, traveling and farming, but he loved nothing better than spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Sivert and Esther, brother Donald Seeland, and granddaughter Jessica Seeland.

Hal is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years Marilyn of Saginaw, his children Kathy (Chip) Kubis of Saginaw, Craig (Chris) Seeland of Duluth, Linda (Mark) Ridgewell of Duluth, Brian (Bridget) Seeland of Saginaw, Debra (Greg) Neve of New Orleans and Mark Seeland of Calif., a brother Kenneth (Mae) Seeland of Roseville, a sister Gladys Ristow of Anoka, 10 grandchildren, one great-grandson due to arrive in March and his beloved Welsh Corgi, Thor.

A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. today, Thurs., Jan. 25, 2007 in St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, 5779 Seville Road.

John Joseph Filipovich, John Joseph Filipovich, who served on the Proctor School Board and was the Constable and Justice of the Peace in Midway Township, died Thurs., Jan. 25, 2007. He was 89.

The Saginaw resident, formerly of Proctor, was born May 1, 1917 in Eveleth to Marco and Mary (Boben) Filipovich. He graduated from Eveleth Community College, soldiered in Europe from 1942 until 1946, ran a Duluth steel mill bulldozer for 17 years, had several self-run businesses, was director of a Federal Job Training Project and coordinator with MN Economic Development. He retired in 1984. He served us all in many ways: the DFL party, MN Citizens Federation NE, the Arrowhead Health Center, the UN Association, MN Mental Health, Unitarian Universalist, Proctor VFW, AFL/CIO Retirees, Midway Park Community Club, and Arrowhead Agency on Aging. While resting, he built 2 family homes from the basement up. He was still splitting wood by hand 3 months before he died.

John was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and three sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years Pearl (Nurmi), daughter Frances of Saginaw, sons Bob (Marylis) of Montana, Glen (Debra) and Steve (Rebecca) of Duluth, grandchildren Karen, Jennifer, Eric, Scott, Jake and Zack, great-grandchildren Nia, Lillian and Rachel, sister Louise Snidarich and nephew Tom and his family (Eveleth). John will be missed.

Service was held Mon., Jan. 29 at First Memorial Funeral Chapel.
