Margaret J. Tromblay
A memorial service was held Monday for Margaret J. Tromblay of Saginaw. She died Sat., March 3, 2007, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was 66.
She was born at home July 20, 1940 in Cloquet to Maurice and Hilda (Bjork) Tromblay. Margie was a confirmed member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Twig. She attended school in Brookston. Margie attended UDAC for over 30 years and looked forward to her daily activities there. Along with her involvement with UDAC, she also participated in Special Olympics. Margie lived with her sister Marion and her family for much of her adult life. In her later years, she lived at Kiminki Homes, Andler Homes, Trillium Services and Edgewood Vista.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Marion Johnson.
Margie is survived by her brother Richard (Delores) Tromblay, sisters Shirley Elfving, Helen Bong and Lorraine Laine, and many nieces and nephews, including her niece and guardian, Susan Johnson.
Rev. Joe Koranda officiated the service.
Inurnment will take place at a later date at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery in Twig.
Walter A. Swanstrom
Susie Clark (Archie) of Pike Lake is saddened by the death of her father, Walter A. Swanstrom. He died Wed., Mar. 7, 2007, at the Benedictine Health Center Safe Harbor Duluth. He was 95.
Walter was a veteran of the Minnesota National Guard and the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a boy scout leader for 50 years. He was part owner of General Appliance in Duluth until 1962. He then went to work for the U.S. Navy in Panama Canal Zone as a Mechanical Engineer, followed by work with the Air Force in Washington state. He retired in 1976 and returned to the Duluth area.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Anne, first son Walter John, brothers Cody, Pete and Dick, and sister Jane.
He is also survived by his sons Skip of County Claire, Mich., Tom (Mary Kay) of Duluth, Bill (Sue) of Apple Valley, and Pat (Janice) of Thousand Oaks, Calif., nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Arthur E. Kubis
Services will be held today for Arthur E. Kubis of Saginaw. He died Sat., Mar. 10, 2007, in Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. He was 77.
He married Betty Christ on May 9, 1952. Art was a farmer and worked at Conwed and USG in Cloquet for 42 years, retiring in 1994. He enjoyed playing cards and cribbage, bringing water to the deer camp, sitting on his deck having fun, Saturday morning coffee time with family and friends and he loved spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and LaVerna and brothers Don and Ronald Kubis. Art was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his family.
He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years Betty, his children Ron “Bucky” Kubis and Donna (Rick) Maki, both of Saginaw, his special grandchildren Jennifer (Dewey) Johnson of Duluth and Jason “Stubby” Maki of Cloquet, special twin great-granddaughters Madison and Kaitlin Johnson “His Little Punkins”, brothers Lawrence “Cub” (Pauline) Kubis, Kenny Kubis and Robert “Chip” (Kathy) Kubis, all of Saginaw, and Jer (Barb) Kubis of Cloquet, sisters Charlene (Norman) Amborn and Norma Nichols, both of Saginaw, and Lorraine “Toots” Gilbertson of Calif., sister-in-law Lucille Kubis of Saginaw, and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Visitation will continue today, Thursday from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service in St. John’s Lutheran Church of Saginaw.
Kathleen Ann Tondryk
Kathleen Ann Tondryk of Saginaw, died Tues., Mar. 13, 2007, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth, surrounded by her family.
She was a 1953 graduate of Cloquet High School and married Frank John Tondryk on July 7, 1953. Kathleen worked as a cook/caregiver at Whistling Pines in Saginaw until she retired in the mid-1990’s. She was a member of the Cloquet Eagles Auxiliary Drill Team. Kathleen enjoyed having company come to her home, baking, going on family trips and spending time playing board games, cards or dice with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Evan and Annabelle Southerland.
Kathleen is survived by her husband of 53 years Frank of Saginaw, daughters Carol Davis of Cloquet and Gwen (Mike) Hanson of Little Falls, son Wally (Caroline) Tondryk of Saginaw, her sister Geraldine Jackson of Shawnee, Okla., grandchildren Jennifer (Damon) Tackett of Barnum, Michelle Tondryk of Brooklyn Center, John Tondryk of Saginaw, Ryan (Kelly) Hanson of Long Prairie, Joey (Missy) Hanson of Little Falls, and Kyle (Cassie) Hanson of Bertha, Minn., great-grandchildren Alex, Zachary, Jaden, Tarius, Elyjah, Dashawn, Angela, Kris, Lily and Lexie, a special friend Jim Davis and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service was held Fri., Mar. 16, 2007, in Cloquet.
Dorothy Karen Kathleen (Maki) Suomela
Dorothy Karen Kathleen (Maki) Suomela passed away on Fri., Mar. 16, 2007, at her Proctor area home. She was 83.
She was born in 1925 to Hulda Lina (Tokkar) and Matt Jacob Maki in Chisholm. Dorothy was just three when the family moved to Muncie, Ind., where her father sought work as an auto body repairman during the Depression years. The family lived in Pontiac, Mich., and Meadville and Lancaster, Pa. In 1932, the family moved back to Chisholm to the home built by Dorothy’s father in an area known as Jordan Location. Dorothy graduated from Chisholm Schools in 1943. She moved to St. Cloud to attend the Minnesota State Teachers College. A Diploma in Elementary Education was awarded to her on July 20, 1945 whereby she received the Elementary School Standard Certification and taught school the next year in Finland, Minn. She minored in Visual Arts and seven of her paintings were selected by Courage Center for their annual Christmas cards. Dorothy married Aarre Suomela in 1946 in Duluth after he came home from World War II in Germany. Together they built a home on Arrowhead Road in Hermantown, where they raised three children. They lived there until 1993, when they sold the property to enable building of the Duluth Clinic-Hermantown location. The couple was active in the United Cerebral Palsy Organization, Dorothy was a board member during which time she attended national symposiums in Denver and St. Louis and a Minnesota Governor’s Conference on The Handicapped at the Governor’s Mansion. She was also a charter member of the United Developmental Achievement Center (UDAC) as well as Residential Services Incorporation (RSI). Having a strong desire to serve, Dorothy accepted an invitation to serve as Chairwoman of the Board of the Duluth Area United Cerebral Palsy Organization.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister Ethel Elviira, and brother Matthew Leroy Maki, who passed away in August 2000.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 60 years Aarre Suomela, daughters Linnaea Rae (Don) Bosiacki of Hockley, Texas and Robin Renee Suomela (RSI), son Paul Aarre (Bobbie Frost) of Duluth, grandchildren Dawnaea Linn (Brian) Mayfield, Chrystal Ann (Jeff) Choats and Jayd Alan (Ricarda) Bosiacki, great-grandchildren Jake Winston, Jessika Rae and Brady Don Mayfield, Tyler Choats, Sabrina Gale and Luc Edward Bosiacki, and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy requested no services. Inurnment at Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown.
David B. McLeod
David B. McLeod, life-long resident of Duluth, went to be with his Lord Sun., Mar. 18, 2007, with his family at his side.
He was born April 22, 1932, in Duluth to Murdock and Della McLeod. David worked at U.S. Steel for over 25 years. He was an active member of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Gary, New Duluth. He was a volunteer at Miller Dwan and for the American Cancer Society.
David was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Georgie, Murdock and James and a sister Irene.
He is survived by his life partner Mary Mrak, children David S. (Jan) McLeod of Proctor, Deborah McLeod of Duluth and Sandra (James) Newgren of Hermantown, four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters; the mother of his children, and many other relatives and friends.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at 2 p.m. until the 3 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial today, Thurs., Mar. 22, in St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Gary-New Duluth. Burial at Calvary Cemetery in the spring.
Gerard J. Maeckelbergh
Michael (Bonnie) Maeckelbergh of Proctor is mourning the death of his father, Gerard J. Maeckelbergh. The Duluth resident died Thurs., Mar. 22, 2007, at Viewcrest Health Center. He was 91.
He was born in Duluth on April 3, 1915 and had attended St. Jean de Baptiste Catholic School and Denfeld High School. Gerard worked as a bus driver for the Duluth Transit Authority for 37 years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the French Club, Teamsters Union and the Teamsters Retirees Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Marie, who died in Jan., 2006.
Gerard is survived by his other children Gerald (Margaret) of Fridley, Kenneth (Sharon) of White Bear Lake, Pat (Rich) Fredricks of Cotton, and Joan (John) Hargens of Rosemount, 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his extended family, the loving staff at Viewcrest Health Center.
A funeral service was held Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Duluth. Burial at Oneota Cemetery.
Olga Alvera Pedersen
Olga Alvera Pedersen, formerly of Alborn, Twig and Duluth, died Mon., Mar. 19, 2007, in Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. She was 88.
She was born in 1918 in Alborn to John and Johanna Ostman. Olga graduated from Alborn High School in 1936. While in school, she worked in the school library, rang the school bell and had a key to open the school. After graduation, Olga did housework in Duluth. She married Charles Pedersen on July 3, 1941 in Meadowlands and they made their home in Culver. In addition to living in Culver, Olga lived in the Alborn, Twig, and Duluth areas for many years. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Culver and a member of its Ladies Aid. She was a former member of Bethlehem Lutheran in Alborn, Bethlehem Lutheran in Twig, and Holy Cross Lutheran in Duluth. She enjoyed reading, mending, flower gardening, baking, and fishing. She also enjoyed entertaining family and friends and was always ready to serve “a little lunch”.
Olga was preceded in death by her husband Charles on Feb. 25, 2006, six brothers, and one sister.
She is survived by her daughter Judith (Ernest) Mattson of Brookston, sons Rodney (Janice) of Alborn and Darrell (Jennifer) of Baxter, sister Esther Barber of Proctor, sister-in-law Diane Hansen of Culver, grandchildren Gregory (Kathy) Pedersen, Stacey (Douglas) Tevik, Heather (Jeff) Adkins, Tricia and Eric Mattson, Leah, John (Maisi) and Sarah Pedersen, great-grandchildren Rochelle and Hunter Tevik, Danielle and Dillon Smith, Alexandra Urshan, Brenden Mattson, and Katelyn Pedersen.
A funeral service was held Fri., Mar. 23, 2007, in Faith Lutheran Church in Culver. Entombment will be at Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery in Hermantown.
William “Bill” Lamkin
William “Bill” Lamkin died peacefully on Fri., March 23, at St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Shakopee, surrounded by family and friends. He was 62.
He was born in Duluth, grew up in Proctor and graduated from Proctor High School in 1963.
Bill was preceded in death by daughter Lisa, one brother, three sisters, and parents Virgil and Nina-Mae.
He is survived by wife Faith, son Jon (Marjorie) of Illinois, daughter Kari of Chaska, grandsons Alex, Kasey and Nathan, and brother Mike (Susie) of Mankato.
A memorial service will be held Sat., Mar. 31, 11 a.m. at Valley Free Evangelical Church, 150 Engler Blvd., Chaska. Visitation starts at 10 a.m. Inurnment will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Chaska.
Melford E. “Mel” Robinson
Shelley (Kenneth Jr.) Iverson of Twig and Denise (Steven) Baublitz of Munger are in bereavement following the death of their father, Melford E. “Mel” Robinson. The Anderson Rd. resident died Sun., Apr. 29, 2007, in his home surrounded by his family. He was 84.
Mel was born Oct. 23, 1922 in Bemidji to Thomas and Maren (Olsen) Robinson. He served in Luzon and New Guinea in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Army during WW II. After the war, Mel returned to Duluth and married Rose Campanella on May 7, 1949. He retired from Duluth Water and Gas as a superintendent. Mel was a member of St. Peter's Church, the Italian American Club, life member of VFW Post 137, a member of Duluth Combined Honor Guard and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Gerald, Tom and Roy “Red”, and his wife Rose in 1991.
Mel is also survived by his companion Caroline Gradine of Duluth, grandchildren Justin and Garrett Iverson and Stephanie and Nathan Baublitz, sister Lorraine McKeever of Fredenberg and a brother Danny Robinson of Calif.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. today, Thursday, in St. Peter's Church. Interment with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard at Sunrise Memorial Park.
