Dawn Alane VanValkenburg
Dawn Alane VanValkenburg died unexpectedly in her home Sat., Apr. 28, 2007. She was 54.
She was born on August 26, 1952, and graduated from Proctor High School in 1970. She was employed by Miller’s Roofing. Dawnie loved crocheting, history and reading. Her greatest love was spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her mother Alice, father Donald Lundquist and her beloved sister Polly Bohlin.
She is survived by her son William VanValkenburg, sister Laurie (Dick) Lindgren, brother Scott (Robin) Lundquist, nephews Jamie (Jen), Jeremy, David, Jarred, Nick, Austin, Dakota, Colton, Craig and Payton, nieces Stephanie (Doug), Rachel (Bruce), Bridget (Kourtney), Jesse (Scott), Tiffany (Ron), and Char.
A gathering of family and friends was held Wed., May 2, 2007, in Bell Brothers Funeral Home.
Robert “Bud” Edward Ness
Robert “Bud” Edward Ness of Hermantown and Billings, Mont., went to be with his Lord on Thurs., May 17, 2007, in Viewcrest Health Center. He was 85.
Bud was born in Duluth on April 23, 1922, to Peter and June Mary (Caster) Ness. Bud attended Denfeld High School and was a disabled World War II Navy veteran. He retired in 1980 after 33 years as a Greyhound Lines bus driver. Bud attended Faith Baptist Church. On Oct. 13, 1951, he married Hanna Hill in Billings, Mont.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Maxine Davis and his brother Milton.
Bud is survived by his wife Hanna, children Lana (John) Anderson of Duluth, Judy (Jim) Cooper of Billings, Mont., Brenda (Richard) Holappa of Two Harbors, and Mark of Duluth, sisters Mavis Sgambati and Shirley (Warren) Enberg of Duluth, and Pop’s grandchildren Jamie Landfried, Kari and Jeni Anderson, Sarah (Aleksey) Lazar, Becky (Jake) Reisinger, Jessie, Ben and Kelly Cooper, Army Specialist Nicholas Holappa, Brooke and Dakotah Ness, great-grandchildren Katie Anderson, Paige Landfried, Grace Anderson, Madalyn McCorision and Angelina Wacker, and many nieces and nephews.
A service was held Monday in Bell Brothers Funeral Home. Burial in Oneota Cemetery. Military Honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Home.
Betty Jean Taylor
Betty Jean Taylor of St. Louis River Road, a 1949 graduate of Proctor High School, was called home into the loving arms of Jesus on Thurs., May 17, 2007, in St. Luke’s Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was 75.
She was born to Chris and Sarah (Rainey) Hanson on May 24, 1931 and was a lifelong area resident. In earlier years, she was employed by the former Woolworth Store in the purchasing department. Betty was united in marriage to Leslie Rautell on June 30, 1951. On Nov. 23, 1965, she became a widow when her husband Les died tragically in an automobile accident. She married W. Arthur Taylor on Sept. 9, 1967, and they would have celebrated 40 years of marriage this fall. She was an active member of Augustana Lutheran Church, W.E.L.C.A. and had served on the church council.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Leslie, sisters Viola Nickel and Gloria Guptill, and brothers Chris Hanson Jr., Orville Hanson and Jackie Hanson.
Survivors include her loving husband Arthur Taylor, son Greg Rautell (fiancee Linda Grau) of Proctor, daughter Karen (Gary R.) Olson of Esko, daughter Wanda Taylor (Gary D. Olson) of Las Vegas, son Leroy (Susan) Taylor of Ham Lake, daughter Doreen (Paul) Baldwin of Calif., sister Sandra (John) Kiminki of Proctor, grandchildren Dane Olson, Brandon Rautell (fiancee Sarah Brown), Megan Rautell, Kari Baldwin and Erick Baldwin, great-grandson Hunter East, Godchildren Alan Kiminki and Cheri Kiminki, numerous nieces and nephews, and her beloved four-legged friend Chelsea.
A service was conducted Monday in Augustana Lutheran Church, Rev. Victor Nelson and Rev. Gary Reis officiating. Burial in Augustana Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Home.
David Hom
Craig (Lana) Hom of Proctor is mourning the death of his father, David Hom. The lifelong resident of Duluth passed away Fri., May 18, 2007 at Franciscan Health Center. He was 84.
Dave was born in Duluth on July 24, 1922 to Paul and Ella Hom, graduated from Denfeld High School in 1941 and, in 1943 joined the Merchant Marine sailing on tankers during World War II. When he returned from the war, he married his high school sweetheart, the only girlfriend that he ever had, Lois Ramstad. Dave was a worker for most of his adult life. He worked two full-time jobs. He worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad, later the Burlington Northern, for 44 years. During that time he also worked as a heavy equipment operator for Older Construction for many years. He also sold cars for many years at Meyer’s Motors, McDonald Motors, Dokmo Dodge, and Seaway Chrysler. He was a youth hockey coach for the Park Point teams that his three sons played on. He also served as president of the Park Point Community Club in the mid 50’s. During that time, he originated the Smelt Queen Contest. He was a Bulldog Hockey fan and past president of the Blueline Club. Dave and Lois traveled to most of the team’s away games for many years with the club and also with the Cloquet Connection. He received the Fan of the Year award in 1995. Dave was a nominee for the Duluth Hall of Fame in 1994.
Dave was preceded in death by his wife Lois, his parents, his sister Joan and his brothers Paul, Russell and Dick.
Survivors also include his daughter Wendy (Craig) Kaija of Tacoma, Wash., sons David (Sherry) and Bob (Peggy), grandchildren Stacey, Ryan, Keely (Darren), Katie (Josh), Amy (Aaron), Luke, Karlie (Tim), Jake, Zach and Ben, and great-grandchildren Keith and Rayven.
At Dave’s request, there will be no service.
William “Bill” Thomas Talarico
William “Bill” Thomas Talarico of Proctor died Tues., May 15, 2007, in his home after a battle with cancer, with his family at his side. He was 65.
Bill was born in Duluth on March 19, 1942, to Wadino and Marilyn Jean (Curry) Talarico. Bill graduated from Denfeld High School and was a long time Proctor resident. Bill married Bonnie Miller on October 5, 1981. Bill loved to fish, and watch his grandchildren play hockey and football. His family was very important to him. He spent his life serving other people and tending to their needs. Bill worked for Monson Trucking for over 25 years. Prior he worked for Halvor Lines and Princel Transport. Bill was a career driver with over 4 million miles of safe driving.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and brother Wadino (Dino).
He is survived by his wife Bonnie, sons Darryn of Superior and William Paul (Lori) of Wrenshall, stepmother Shirley of Proctor; stepson Paul Andrew (Theresa) Schrader of San Diego, Calif., stepdaughter Diana Bester of Duluth, brothers Samuel A. Talarico and Brad Talarico of Proctor, Thomas (Diana) Cotton and Harvey Cotton of Houston, Texas, Diane (Mike) Olla of Austin, Texas and Susanne Cotton of Houston, Texas; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and some very special friends.
A service was conducted Saturday, May 19, 2007, in Bell Brothers Funeral Home. Burial in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Home.
Roger Allen “Rocky” Augé
Roger Allen “Rocky” Augé, a 1965 Proctor High School graduate, died Sun., May 13, 2007, of a sudden heart attack while working out of town in Michigan. He was 60.
A resident of Matthews, N.C., he was born Oct. 3, 1946, in Duluth, to the late Edward P. and Dorothy Mae Parker Augé.
He made truck driving a career, but his family was his life.
Rocky is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years Glenda, daughters, Brenda Augé (Sean) Harris of Oakboro, N.C. and Tina Louise Augé of Matthews, grandchildren Christian Allen Harris, Haillee Harris and Christina Dial, brother Clifford (Patricia) Augé of Duluth, nephews Brian and Todd Augé, niece Tammy Day, brothers-in-law Terry and Charlie Therrell, sisters-in-law Renee Osborne and Vaneesa Clark, and many dear friends.
A funeral service was held Sat., May 19, in Wilson Funeral & Cremation Service, Charlotte, N.C.
Jack Joseph LaVoy
Jack H. (Nancy) LaVoy of Pike Lake is mourning the death of his father, Jack Joseph LaVoy. The Cloquet resident died Thurs., May 17, 2007, in the Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Silver Bay. He was 81.
He was born in 1925 in Cloquet to Archie and Ruth LaVoy. Jack graduated from Cloquet High School in 1943. He married Greta Hall in January 1945 in Indiana and after World War II they made their home in Cloquet. Greta passed away in 1989 and Jack married Lil on Aug. 24, 1990. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and his unit received a presidential citation for valor. From 1954 to 1980 he served as a Career Staff Officer with the Minnesota Army National Guard. Jack served as Carlton County Commissioner from 1982 to 1990. He served as the first president of the Northspan Group. He was a member of the Hebert Kennedy VFW Post 3979, served on the VFW Honor Guard, and served as the post commander from 1969 to 1970, VFW district commander from 1975 to 1976, and VFW state commander from 1998 to 1999.
Jack was preceded in death by his first wife Greta LaVoy in 1989, brothers Leo and Orville, and a grandson Troy LaVoy.
He is survived by his wife Lil of Cloquet, other children Connie (Mike) Morris of Medford, Ore., Patrick (Linda) LaVoy of Cloquet and Annette (Steven) White of Carlton, step-daughters Brenda Windus of Wrenshall, Shelly Carter of Rockville, Maryland and Wendy Maxey of Grapevine, Texas, 17 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was Mon., May 21, 2007 in Northland Funeral Home Chapel. Burial at New Calvary Cemetery in Cloquet. Military Honors accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard.
Turre A. Sandstrom, Jr.
Turre A. Sandstrom, Jr. of Saginaw passed away Sat., May 12, 2007, at the Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton. He was 75.
He was born May 26, 1931 in Waldo Township to Turre A. and Edna F. (Nylund) Sandstrom and graduated from Proctor High School in 1949. Turre then served with the U.S. Army in Greenland before entering and graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1958 as a mechanical engineer. He was united in marriage to Carol Mae Fossell on October 14, 1955, in Duluth. Turre worked for the DM&IR Railroad prior to working for Oliver Mining, General Mills and then the Northwest Paper Co. (Potlatch), where he retired in 1996 as senior project engineer. He and his wife Carol Mae owned and operated the Saginaw Store from 1969–1982. Turre was a member and Past Master of Dalles Masonic Lodge #181 A.F. & A.M.; the York Rite and Scottish Rite in Duluth; AAD Shrine Temple; the Viking Shrine Club in Cloquet where he served as president; Ala-Ala; the Jesters; and the Order of Eastern Star of Euclid Lodge in Duluth. He loved a beautiful yard, so therefore, he had six lawnmowers and mowed 12 acres. He and Carol Mae would spend five months wintering in Apache Junction, AZ, and would also go to their cabin in Cotton during the summer.
Turre was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife Carol Mae, children Shirley (Denny) Breitkreutz of Eagan, Lynn (Ted) Klein of Culver, Devon (Greg) Willeck, Kelly (Sandy) Sandstrom, and Kory (Sandy) Sandstrom, all of Saginaw, grandchildren Rory (Sue) Trettel, Daina Trettel, Rebekkah (Dave) Morrison, Timothy Sandstrom, Rhiannon Klein and Matthew Sandstrom, great-grandchildren Mickayla Trettel, Jayden Trettel and Cody Sandstrom, brothers Harvey (Elaine) Sandstrom of Grand Rapids and Lloyd (Mary Jane) Sandstrom of Lake Havasu, AZ, sister Darlene (Curtis) Lind of Saginaw, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. tonight, Thurs. at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet with a Masonic Service at 6:30 p.m. conducted by the Brothers of Dalles Masonic Lodge. The visitation will resume on Fri., May 18, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service also at Nelson Funeral Care, followed with a luncheon in the fellowship room. Entombment services will be at Sunrise Memorial Park in Hermantown with full Military Honors presented by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard.
Helen Evelyn Fitzsimmons
Loretta Krynicki of Saginaw is saddened by the death of her sister, Helen Evelyn Fitzsimmons, The Rice Lake Township resident died Thurs., May 3, 2007, in St. Mary’s Medical Center Hospice. She was 71.
She was born in Duluth on Dec. 23, 1935 to Trueman and Marie (Woods) Nelson. She attended St. John’s Catholic Church.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, son Joseph Fitzsimmons, life companion Gilean Lunde in 1998, and nephew Richard Krynicki.
Helen is also survived by children Cheryl (Sidney) Robishaw of Groton, Conn., Darrell (Judy) Fitzsimmons of Duluth, Gerald (Jean) Fitzsimmons of Palm Springs, Calif., Carol Jean Fitzsimmons of Waterford, Conn., and Jeanette (Allan) Leclair of Palm Springs, Calif., grandchildren Jami, Donald, Justin, Bridget, Rebecca, Danielle, Olivia, Ashton, Zaferia, Helena, and Brandon, great-grandchildren Brooklyn and Jada, one other sister Carol Ault of Duluth, half-sister Elaine and half-brother Larry, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Sunday in Bell Brothers Funeral Home.
Shelley Irene Juola
Richard (Joanne) Olson of Pike Lake is in bereavement following the death of his mother Shelley Irene Juola. The Spirit Cove Drive resident died Sat., May 5, 2007, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was 73.
She was born on Sept. 15, 1933 in Duluth to Alford and Helen (Lewein) Olson. She was a Duluth resident most of her life, living in Fergus Falls for two years, a 1951 graduate of Denfeld High School and had attended UMD for two years. Shelley married William R. Juola on Oct. 1, 1960 in Cloquet. In earlier years, she was an employee of the American Red Cross in Duluth. She was a member of Our Savior’s Evangelical Lutheran.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband William on July 10, 2002.
Shelley is survived by sons Paul (Laurie) Juola of Alexandria, Va. and David (Patty) Juola of St. Paul, brother Glenn (Elaine “Bea”) Olson of Fergus Falls, grandchildren Andrew and Sophie Juola, and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Services were held last week in Our Savior’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pastor John Hanson officiating. Burial in Oneota Cemetery.
