Helene Lois 'Micki' (Buetow) Bolander
Ronald (Sharon) Buetow of Proctor is in bereavement following the death of his sister Helene Lois 'Micki' (Buetow) Bolander. She died on Sat., June 9, 2007, surrounded by loved ones. She was 68.

She was born on May 21, 1939 in Ellendale, N.D., to Walter and Esther Buetow. Micki worked at St. Luke's Hospital and retired as a bartender/waitress from Local 99.

She is preceded in death by her parents and stepdaughter, Patty Hanson.

Micki is also survived by her husband, Merlyn 'Pete' Bolander of Duluth; sons, Michael (Sherry) Buetow of Moose Lake and Daniel (Theresa) Buetow of Duluth; brother, Ron and Sharon’s children, Jeff and Jodie; stepson, Brad (Peggy) Sager of Duluth; grandchildren, Chance, Chelsea, Brittney, Chantel, Jordan, Hayley, Bryan, Autumn, J.P., Kelly, and Valerie; great-grandchildren, Lane, Bryce, and Tylor; and her dog, Chester. The family would like to thank her friends and the staff at St. Eligius Health Care Center for their kindness to Micki over the last four years.

Memorial service is at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, 2007 in Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4831 Grand Ave. with Pastor John Hanson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Pearl M. Boben
Roger (Sandy) Boben of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother, Pearl M. Boben. The lifelong resident of Gary passed away unexpectedly on Sat., July 21, 2007, surrounded by her family. She was 82.

She was born on December 20, 1924 to Phillip and Stella Abell. Pearl attended Morgan Park and Denfeld schools, graduating in 1942. She loved music and dance, performing in many local venues and later teaching dance. After marrying her childhood sweetheart, Albin Boben on June 22, 1946, her focus became her family. Pearl later worked for School District #709 until her retirement at the age of 70. Pearl loved life. Her laughter and smile were infectious. Pearl enjoyed bowling, camping, her car, organ lessons, friends and most of all, family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, parents, and great-grandchild Sawyer Brown.

Pearl will also be missed by her other children Robert (Nancy), June (David) Guenther and Jerry (Wendy Sewruk), 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Ruth Boben and special friend Mary Malkovich.

A funeral service was held Wed., July 25, 2007, at First Memorial Funeral Chapel. Burial at Oneota Cemetery.

Ida Margaret (Kratt) Johnson
Ida Margaret (Kratt) Johnson, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1932, was a charter member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Twig, and a lifelong resident of the area, passed away Sun., July 22, 2007, at her home, Edgewood Vista. She was 93.

Ida was born January 6, 1914 in Duluth to Morris and Thora Dahl. The most important part of Ida’s life was being a homemaker and raising her three children. Ida sold Avon for many years and enjoyed her time spent with the Twig Birthday Club and doing ceramics.

Ida was preceded in death by her husbands Reinhold Kratt in 1954 and Verner Johnson in 1969, her parents, a son Roger, her sister Girlie Gulbranson, and her brother John Dahl.

She is survived by her children Wayne Kratt of Saginaw and Margaret (Robert) Kanuit of Duluth, grandchildren Brett Kratt, Burton Kratt, Mike (Linda) Kratt, Terri Privette, Sandi (Russ) Ward, Kenneth Kratt, Robert (Amy) Kanuit, and Rebekah (Steve) Syck and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation at 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service today, Thurs., July 26, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 6537 Industrial Road, Twig. Rev. Dan Holm will officiate. A 2 p.m. burial will be at Park Hill Cemetery, Duluth.

Mark Richard Bong
Mark Richard Bong of Brookston died Mon., July 16, 2007, at Cloquet Memorial Hospital. He was 44.

He was born July 25, 1962 in Duluth to Donald and Caroline (Dallmann) Bong. He is a veteran of the US Army. He married Helene Wagner on August 19, 1989. Mark was the Mayor of Brookston for 10 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a “jack of all trades”.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Mark is survived by his loving wife Helene, son Joseph Bong of Brookston, father Donald Bong, brother Michael (Doreen) Bong of Culver, sisters Dawn (Alan Gist) Anderson of Saginaw, Michelle (William) Hink of Brookston, seven nephews, two nieces, and many relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held July 20 at Faith Lutheran Church in Culver. Military honors were presented by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard.

Agnes Victoria Hendrickson
Agnes Victoria Hendrickson went to be with her Lord Thurs., July 19, 2007 at Golden Oaks Care Center, Hermantown.

Agnes was born March 7, 1922 in Cloquet to Andrew and Vendla (Johnson) Swanson. Agnes graduated from Cloquet High School in 1940 and married Lauri W. Myllymaa on Nov. 13, 1943 in Cloquet. Together they raised their three children in Scanlon, where she was a homemaker and very active in the PTA and her church. Following Lauri’s death in 1971, she married Merrill D. Hendrickson on Aug. 31, 1976 in Duluth. They resided in West Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Eunice (Raymond) Hill, and first husband Lauri.

Agnes is survived by her husband Merrill Hendrickson, children Linda (Carl) Macioce, Robert Myllymaa, Joyce (Ron) Mattson, Shirley (Tom) Balgaard, Sharon Pryatel, Rick (Beth) Hendrickson, Don (Karen) Hendrickson, and Sheila (Joseph) Crain, fifteen grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted in First Covenant Church. Rev Mark Kelly officiating. Burial at Maple Grove Cemetery.

Stanley A. Barquist
Stanley A. Barquist of Bellevue, Wash., who was born in Proctor, died at Evergreen Hospice Center on Wed., July 11, 2007. He was 83.

Stan was born on Dec. 8, 1923 to Adolph and Ruth Barquist. He was raised in Proctor and graduated from Proctor High School in 1941. He worked at Proctor Motor Sales. During WW II, he served as an infantry man with the 7th Army, 3rd Division. Stan was an alumnus of General Motors Institute in Detroit, Mich. In 1952 he moved his family to Bellevue, where he was employed for West Lake Chevrolet and Nelson Chevrolet dealerships.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Bernadine and a brother Richard Barquist.

Stan is survived by his loving wife Avon, sons Richard Barquist, Jim McKiernan, and Doug McKiernan, daughter Jeanne Wight, a brother Bill Barquist, sisters Winnie Frolen and Grace (Paul) Sandstrom of Solway Township, and ten grandchildren.

A private graveside service was held at Tahoma National Cemetery.

Enar Stanley Strom
Enar Stanley Strom, 79, former long time Pike Lake resident, now of Crosslake, Minn., died Mon., Aug. 20, 2007, on Isle Royale, Mich.

Enar was born in Duluth on Aug. 25, 1927 to Herman Andrew and Ester Marie (Erickson) Strom. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1945 and served in the Navy Sea Bee’s during the Korean War and World War II. Enar retired in 1982 as a civil service engineer at the Duluth Air Force Base. He was a member of Pike Lake Presbyterian Church, a Church Elder, and member of the Isle Royale Friends and Family Association. Enar enjoyed woodcarving, silversmithing, carpentry, bird watching, commercial fishing, and love of wildlife.

Enar was preceded in death by his parents, brother Thore, sister Ingrid Plesha, infant son Robert, and his great-granddaughter Jayda.

He is survived by his wife Betty Sivertson, whom he married in Duluth on August 14, 1948, sons Todd (fiancé June Carnel) of Red Wing, Andy (Jill) of Murphy Lake, and Chris (Linda) of Esko, daughters Jody (Doug) Buerke of St. Anthony and Patty (Jim Andler) of Murphy Lake, his sister Elvera Olson of Duluth, 22 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren with three on the way, and Enar’s pet moose, Murphy.

A service was held Friday in Pike Lake Presbyterian Church.

Norman H. Nelson
Jane (Irvin) Hagen of Proctor is saddened by the death of her father Norman H. Nelson, 93, lifelong Duluth resident, who passed away Friday in St. Eligius Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Duluth on April 7, 1914 to Ernest and Theresa Nelson. Norman attended Morgan Park High School. He was a World War II veteran. On Nov. 1, 1947, he married Vivian Glanville in Proctor and together they raised two daughters. Norm began his employment working at the Steel Plant. Norm went on to be employed with D.M. & I.R. where he was an engineer, retiring in 1976. Norman was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Golden Arrow Travel Club, enjoyed bowling into his 80's and active on the Stadium Lanes Bowling Leagues, was an avid and accomplished photographer who shared his travel slides with area groups, enjoyed flower gardening, but most of all loved being with his family.

Norman is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Edward. Survivors include his wife, Vivian; another daughter, Cheryl (Rodger) Parendo of Duluth; five grandchildren, Paula (Bruce) Carlson, Julie (Mark) Lysher, Christy (Phil) Strohm, Melissa (Jason) Finnelly, and Tommy Hagen; five great-grandchildren with the sixth expected in March; one brother, Lloyd (Donna) Nelson of Duluth; and nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held yesterday. Interment in Oneota Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Bryan Jack Merrill
Alex Gross (Brian Hendrickson) of Proctor is mourning the death of her son, Bryan Jack Merrill. The Cloquet resident died Friday, August 31, 2007. He was 22.

Bryan will also be sadly missed by his father, Don Merrill (Patti Hofstrand) of Cloquet; sister, Barbara Merrill of San Angelo, Texas; grandfather, Jack Merrill of Cloquet; and his grandmother, Catherine (Robert) McDonald of Cloquet.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Barbara Merrill and grandfather, Bert Gross.

Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007 in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St. in Cloquet.

Violet Lucille Stafford (Klang)
Violet Lucille Stafford (Klang), who graduated from Proctor High School in 1944, went to be with her heavenly family on Sat., Sept. 8, 2007. She was 81.

She was born on March 22, 1926 to Carl and Hilda Klang in Braham, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband William, daughter Barbara Omundson, brothers Lawrence and Theodore. sisters Helen Mansmith, Martha Dahl, Marion Montgomery and Florence Jannetta.

She is survived by children Judy Sands (Stephen), Deborah Peterson (Gerald), Jacqueline Anderson (Kent) and William (Tammy), brothers Herbert Klang (Alice), Earl Klang (June), Ernest Klang (Delores), 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law Robert Stafford (Dorothy) and Walter Stafford (Bette).

Funeral services were held Tues., Sept. 11, 2007 at Forbes Methodist Church, Proctor. Memorials to Forbes Church or donor’s choice.
