Elizabeth Mechtel
Funeral service for Elizabeth Helen Mechtel, 70, East Bethel, took place May 21 at Family of Christ Lutheran Church. Rev. Dennis Perryman officiated.
Mechtel died May 18, 2005 at her home. She was born Nov. 1, 1934 in Hill City to Herman Fredrick and Emma Sophia (Schlobohm) Bauer. She was a retired secretary in the Shakopee School District.
He is survived by her children, DeAnn (Gene) Bettermann, Nora (Fred) Bowers, Gene (Denise) Becker and John Paul Becker; seven grandchildren; one brother; and four sisters.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip; parents; two brothers; and four sisters.
Pallbearers were Adam, Erin, Jared and Sarah Bowers and Ryan, Aaron and Caryln Becker.
Interment was at Hill Lake Cemetery, Hill City. Arrangements were by Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Home, Anoka.
Janice Nadeau
Funeral service for Janice L. Nadeau, 55, Coon Rapids, took place May 20 at Peace Lutheran Church, Coon Rapids. Rev. Nancy Bence officiated.
Nadeau died May 16, 2005 in Coon Rapids. She was born Jan. 24, 1950 in Minneapolis to Harold and Myrtle Grotheim. She was a real estate appraiser.
She is survived by her husband, Earl; his mother, Lois Nadeau; daughters, Michelle and husband Marty Anderson, Lisa Nadeau and friend Mary Novak; son, Jason Nadeau and wife Sarah; and grandchildren, Brenden, Mackenzie and Connor Nadeau and Maxwell Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Myrtle Grotheim; and sister, Judy Cooly.
Pallbearers were Jason Nadeau, Marty Anderson, Michael Grotheim, Eric Slindee, Mark Halen and Ken Thurmes.
Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Arrangements were by Gearhart Funeral Home, Coon Rapids.
Kenneth Peterson
Kenneth E. Peterson, 80, Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Anoka, died May 11, 2005.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran in World War II, worked for KSTP Radio as a sales executive in the late 1950s and 1960s and owned Peterson Office and School Supplies in Anoka in the early to mid 1960s.
He is survived by his second wife, Wanda; stepchildren, Joe, Phil and Kathy; first wife, Florence; sons, Scott and Belinda, Randall and Jackie, Brad, Martin, Kevin and Denise; Christopher and Christina; daughter, Kelly Stamper; grandchildren, Aaron, Adam, Holly, Cheryl, David, Ashley, Justin, Sarah, Zach, Sasha, Dylan, Nicole and Shannon; great-grandchildren, Max, Gavin and Beatrice; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Dorothy; sister, Jean Vevea; and brother, Jerry.
Patricia Rhine
Funeral service for Patricia L. Rhine, 74, Lino Lakes, took place May 18 at Gearhart Funeral Home, Coon Rapids. Rev. Jim Martin officiated.
Rhine died May 14, 2005 in Golden Valley. She was born Aug. 26, 1930 in Minneapolis to Robert and Leone Pierson.
She is survived by her husband, Lyle; children, Steven (Deborah) Davis, Jeffrey Bahl, James (Kathryn) Bahl, Janis (Donald) DeVries, Jerald Bahl and Joseph (Karen) Bahl; five stepchildren; 13 grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
Arrangements were by Gearhart Funeral Home, Coon Rapids.
Dorothy Soucy
Funeral service for Dorothy Louella Frantz Soucy, 81, Monticello, formerly of Champlin, took place May 24 at Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel, Monticello.
Soucy died May 21, 2005 at Lake Ridge Care Center, Buffalo. She was born Aug. 28, 1923 and was employed by Northwestern Bell for 35 years, retiring in 1984. She and her husband moved to Monticello in 1970 when they purchased the Wayside Inn.
She is survived by her children, David and Fern Soucy of Anoka, Charles and Barbara Soucy of Anoka, Linda (Soucy) McAloney of Buffalo, John "Jack" and Wanda Soucy of Anoka, Roseanne (Soucy) and Arthur Duran of Monticello, Catherine (Soucy) and Kurt Holland of Detroit Lakes and Daniel Wruck of St. Michael; sisters, Shirley Johnson and Jane Ann Frantz; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Flavius J. Soucy; brother, Charles Frantz; and sister, Elaine Frantz.
Gary Wurm
Funeral service for Gary W. Wurm, 57, Cedar, took place May 26 at St. Patrick of Cedar Creek, Oak Grove.
Wurm died May 22, 2005 at his home. He was born April 30, 1948 in St. Cloud. He was a manufacturing engineer and a 30-year employee of Guidant Corp, Arden Hills.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; daughters, Tana Wold (Mike) and Kristina Wurm; mother, Vera Wurm; brothers, Denny (Sue), Pat (Deanne) and Craig (Denise); nieces and nephews; and family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, James.
Pallbearers were Craig, Denny and Pat Wurm, Milt Perman, Ed Luukkonen and Dave Wallace.
Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Arrangements were by Washburn-McReavy Seman Chapel, Coon Rapids.
Caroline Bethel
Memorial service for Carolyn "Kellie" Giovanni Bethel, 64, Fridley, took place May 11 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Fridley.
Bethel died May 7, 2005 at Bethesda Hospital, St. Paul. She was born Jan. 10, 1941 in Little Falls.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry; children, David (Cheryl), Rachel Hovland (Jay), Stephen (Brenda); grandchildren, Noah, Micah, Clara, Isaac, Nolan and Calvin; and sisters, Marilyn Wall and Muriel Peterson (Wayne).
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Alice; and brother, Virgil Berg.
Arrangements were by Washburn-McReavy Seman Chapel, Coon Rapids.
Donald Chapman
Funeral service for Donald William Chapman "DWC, " 81, Champlin, took place May 17 at Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Chapel, Anoka. Rev. Bernard Reiser officiated.
Chapman died May 13, 2005 at Fairview University Medical Center, Minneapolis. He was born March 29, 1924 in Maple Grove to George Harrison and Lydia Theresa (Treptau) Chapman. He was a carpenter/contractor and founder and operator of Hayden Hills Golf Course, Champlin.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey (Halverson); daughters, Judi Chapman, Cathy Kessler; grandchildren, John Kessler, Christie and Tommy McFarlane; great-grandchildren, Dylan Saunders and Emma Jones; brother, Jim (Peggy); sisters, Marion (Charlie) Ehlen, Betty (Jack) Menkveld; son-in-law, Ron Strawser, Mike Kessler; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lydia; wife, Delores; and brothers, Robert, Wilbur and Clifford.
Pallbearers were Paul Chergosky, Wayne, Darrel, Craig and David Chapman and Jack Ehlen.
Interment was at Champlin Cemetery. Arrangements were by Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Home.
Duane Engels
Funeral service for Duane Michael Engels, 69, Champlin, took place May 13 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Anoka. Rev. David N. Blume officiated.
Engels died May 10, 2005 in Champlin. He was born Feb. 14, 1936 in Minneapolis to Edward Leo and Charlotte Dorothy (Wilmes) Engels and was a self-employed building contractor.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly; children, Sheri (David) Brinker, Todd Engels, Troy Engels and fiancee Renee Gartner; grandchildren, Jaina, Abby and Derek Brinker, Nathan, Kala and Jacob Engels; sister, Marie (Tom) Becotte; brother, Gary (Kay) Engels; sister-in-law, Doris Noon; brother-in-law, Orville "Corky" Richards; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by his brother, Edward.
Pallbearers were Darryl Brinker, Dennis DuBois, August "Duke" Grosslein, George Kinney, Fred Meier and Dwight Skinner.
Interment was at Calvary Cemetery, Anoka. Arrangements were by Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Home, Anoka.
Mary Galka
Funeral service for Mary Keene Galka, 87, took place May 18 at Washburn-McReavy Seman Chapel, Coon Rapids. Rev. Kennedy officiated.
Galka died May 14, 2005 at Mercy Hospital. She was born Dec. 7, 1917 in Thief River Falls.
She is survived by her brother, Robert A. Keene; children, Deanna (James) Stratton, Kathleen Peterson, Michael (Betty) Coolbroth and John P. Coolbroth; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a niece and nephews; and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert D. and Ann Bartley Keene; brothers, Herbert and William; first husband, James E. Coolbroth; and husband, John A. Galka.
Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Arrangements were by Washburn-McReavy Seman Chapel.
Merlin Heggestad
Funeral service for Merlin J. Heggestad, 65, Coon Rapids, took place May 17 at Faith Lutheran Church, Coon Rapids. Revs. James Donald and Bud Bonn officiated.
Heggestad died May 13, 2005 in Robbinsdale. He was born Nov. 2, 1939 in Starbuck to Martin and Marion Heggestad and was employed in sales and marketing in the hardware industry.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; daughter, Heidi (Dave) Wells; son, Chad (Amber) Heggestad; grandchildren, Josh and Sarah Wells, Gavin and Gabrielle Heggestad; and many other family and friends.
