Jeannette C. Lavamaki
Bill (Dawn) Lavamaki of Proctor is in bereavement following the death of his mother, Jeannette C. Lavamaki. She passed away peacefully on Sat., Sept. 1, 2007, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was 80.

She was born March 12, 1927 to Lewis and Etta Lawrence. Jeannette married Donald E. Lavamaki in November, 1947. She was a long time Park Point resident, a former member of St. Andrews-by-the-Lake Episcopal Church, the Park Point Community Club, Moose Lodge 505 and the American Legion.

Jeannette was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald in 1986 and brothers Jim and Bob Lawrence.

She is also survived by her children Janice (Stephen) Anderson of Makinen, Minn. and Texas, Ray (Colleen) Lavamaki, David (Diane) Lavamaki, and Carol Hillstrom, all of Duluth, Jim (Gayle) Lavamaki of Cloquet, Roberta (Mark) Veale of Moore, Okla., six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and sisters-in-law Betty Lawrence of Thousand Palms, Calif. and Norma Lawrence of Great Falls, Mont.

A memorial gathering was held Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Alexander James “Bug” Klang
Services were held Mon., Sept. 10, 2007 for Alexander James “Bug” Klang. He passed away Thurs., Sept. 6 at home, surrounded by his family. He was 14.

Alex was an active, sociable angel-baby and will be greatly missed by his mom, dad, brothers and sisters. He loved watching Elmo, Thomas the Tank Engine, NASCAR, football and hockey. He also loved going shopping, for rides in the car or his dad’s semi, and cellophane window envelopes. His favorite books and magazines were Elmo, Thomas, TRUCKS magazine and Car and Driver magazine. He loved going down to Highway 2 to watch the semi trucks go by and would get very excited when they used their air horns to honk at him.

Alex is survived by his mom and dad, Lori and Scott Nuessmeier, his brother Dan Klang, sisters Emily and Rachel Klang, maternal grandparents John (Jack) and Irma Robison, paternal grandparents Fay and Wayne Nuessmeier and Ernest and Delores Klang, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and one nephew. He is also survived by his father Lawrence Klang, and brothers Paul (Cathy) Klang of Wis. and Jared Klang of Hermantown.

Services were held at Family of God Lutheran Church on Martin Road, officiated by Rev. Daniel Holm and Rev. Larry Johnson.

Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Violet Marie Streed Edman
Violet Marie Streed Edman, who was born on Sept. 21, 1919 in Proctor to Mary and Axel Streed, died in Rockport, Texas on Sat., Sept. 8, 2007. She was 85.

Violet graduated from Proctor High School in 1937. She married William Edman in 1941. She lived many years in Cloquet and in Sebring, Fla. until moving recently to Rockport.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Wesley Streed, and sisters June Weiler and Janice Caywood.

Violet is survived by her husband William “Bill” of Rockport, children Keith (Cheryl) Edman of Rockport and Nikki Edman of Nopeming, brother Wallace (Marge) Streed and sister Donna Kaye (Jerry) Waldholm, and several nieces and nephews.

Burial will be at a later date. Arrangements made in Rockport.

Rosemary C. Benson
Rosemary C. Benson, a graduate of Proctor High School, passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, Sept. 7, 2007 with her family at her side. The Duluth resident was 69.

She was born in Duluth on April 10, 1938. She was a very loving and caring daughter, sister, mother and grandmother. She will be deeply missed. Her family was the most important thing in her life. She had a passion for Genealogy and worked on it for years, helping many others around the country.

She was preceded in death by her parents Bert and Ruby Busch.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years Charles “Skip” and the other two great loves of her life, son Rob and granddaughter Amanda, all of Duluth, brother John (Leora) Busch of Duluth, and many nieces and nephews.

A private family funeral is planned.

Mary Jo (Scanlon) Berglund
Mary Jo (Scanlon) Berglund, who moved to Proctor at the age of three attended St. Rose Catholic School, graduated from Proctor High School in 1935 and was the school nurse at Proctor High School from 1972 until 1977, passed away Tues., Sept. 11, 2007, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s in the Benedictine Health Center. She was 89.

Formerly of West 7th St., she was born on Oct 23, 1917 in Negaunee, MI to Joseph and Honora Scanlon. Mary Jo graduated from St. Scholastica in 1940 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and worked one year at St. Mary’s Hospital. She married George O. Berglund in 1941 in Duluth and started raising her family. She returned to St. Mary’s Hospital in 1962, where she served as head nurse in the nursery until 1971. She was a paramedic examiner for Physical Measurements from 1978 until her retirement in 1984. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church since 1949 and the St. Margaret’s Guild, the Minn. Nurses Assoc., the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Torchlight Lake Preservations Assoc., Lakeside AARP and past president of VIVA. Mary Jo was instrumental in organizing the Ladies Auxiliary to the Duluth Firefighters in 1977.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George O. in 1975, infant son Bruce Edward in 1946, toddler daughter Rita Lenora in 1959, son-in-law George S. Clark in 1999, and foster brother Edgar Colombe.

She is survived by daughters Georgia Ann Clark of Detroit, MI, and Brenda Berglund of Duluth, sons Neil Berglund of Duluth and William (Pat) Berglund of Sawyer, grandchildren Bruce (Megan) Berglund of Grand Rapids, MI and Collette (Tom) Lenarz of Cloquet, great-grandchildren Will, Marta, Nils and Vera Berglund all of Grand Rapids, MI, and Emma Jo and Adison Lenarz of Cloquet, and a special friend June Colombe of Proctor.

A mass of christian burial was held Saturday in St. James Catholic Church. Rev Fr Charles Flynn officiating. Burial in Calvary Cemetery.

Wilma E. Rasmussen
Wilma E. Rasmussen, whose daughter Betty Merling, grandson Jim Merling, Jr. and great-granddaughter Katie McDougall all live in Proctor, passed away Sat., Sept. 15, 2007 in the Benedictine Health Center surrounded by her family. She was 93.

The former Ensign St. resident was born on November 15, 1913 to Andrew and Anna Nelson in Prairie Lake Township, Wis. She had been a Duluth resident for the past 71 years and married Edwin Rasmussen on December 12, 1936 in Duluth. Wilma was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Naomi Circle, she enjoyed gardening and in her younger years, she played softball, volleyball and hide-and-seek with her grandchildren. She was a Girl Scout troop leader and active with the PTA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Edwin on June 24, 2006, a son-in-law Bruce Ellefsen, two brothers, six sisters, a grandson and a great-grandson.

She is survived by three other daughters Elaine Ellefsen, Eleanor (Gordon) Larsen and Janet Rasmussen, all of Duluth, a son Raymond (Carol) Rasmussen of Two Harbors, 15 other grandchildren, 32 other great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren and one on the way in December, and many nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.

A funeral service was held Wed., Sept. 19, 2007 in Zion Lutheran Church. Rev James Nelson officiated. Burial in Park Hill Cemetery.

Helen M. Theno
Michael (Patti) Theno of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother, Helen M. Theno. The Ely resident passed away, Sat., Sept. 8, 2007 at St. Mary’s Hospice in Duluth. She was 86.

She was born on Sept. 21, 1920 to Marko and Magdelena Slogar in Ely. Helen graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1938. On Dec. 3, 1945 she married Marvin J. Theno and they resided in Ely. Helen worked at the Ely J.C. Penney Store, Marquette Metal in Cleveland, Ohio during World War II, at the cafeteria in the Ely Schools and was a homemaker for most of her life. She was a lifelong member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, charter member of the Ely Garden Club, a member of Women’s Life, the Ely Bowling league, Slovenian Women’s Union and the KSKJ Lodge. Helen loved to cook, bake, and had a huge collection of cookbooks. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and quilting.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Michael Mertel, Ann Saari, Angela Tierney and William Slogar.

She is also survived by her husband of 61 years Marvin, children Marguerite (Don) Shavor of Forest Lake, Helenmarie “Rea” (Jim) Rossi of Charlotte, N.C., Mark (Barbara) Theno of Minnetonka and John Theno of Ely, grandchildren Dean and Darren Shavor, Jessica, Aaron, Amanda and Morgan Theno, David Rossi, April Archibald, Heidi and Ashley Roy, great-grandchildren Sydney and Beck Shavor and Tyler and Mason Archibald, a sister Madelyn (William) Klun of Hoyt Lakes and numerous nieces and nephews.

A mass of christian burial was held Fri., Sept. 14, 2007 in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely. Father James Scheuer officiated. Burial in Ely Cemetery.

Homer Dale Porterfield
Tim (Patti) Porterfield of Proctor is mourning the death of his father, Homer Dale Porterfield. The Duluth, Ocala, Fla. and long time resident of Lake Nebagamon passed away Wed., Sept. 19, 2007 in St. Luke’s Hospital. He was 89.

Homer was born in Mesick, Mich. On April 29, 1918 to Homer H. and Fern (Beidler) Porterfield. Homer retired from Reserve Mining as foreman in 1980. He served in the Army as a Paratrooper with the 101 Airborne. He was a member of the VFW.

Homer was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bud, and his wife Barbara.

He is also survived by one other son Kim (Denice) of Maple Lake, grandchildren Aaron, Devin, Denise, Dale, Barbra, Tim, Tara and Jennifer, and four great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be held. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Home.

Marilyn Janice Beckwith
Marilyn Janice Beckwith, 74, passed away peacefully in her Mesa, Ariz., home due to complications from cancer on Sept 18, 2007.

She put up a courageous fight and was never a complainer; however, the Lord said it was time to join him. She was born on Dec. 22, 1932 to Henry and Agnes Peterson in Duluth. Her childhood years were spent in Palmers, where her dad was in charge of a Section House for DM&IR Railroad. After graduation from Clover Valley High, she worked in Rockford, Ill. Marilyn married Charles “Bud” Beckwith in Colorado Springs, Colo., on March 19, 1952, and after his discharge from the Army they moved back to northern Minnesota. They moved to Babbitt in 1955 and in 1987 they left to explore North America in their RV. In 1995, Marilyn and Bud settled in Mesa, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Peterson in 1966 and her mother Agnes Bakke in 1992, grandson Shawn Forest Akkanen in 1980, sister Carol Wiederholt in October 2003, and brother Kenny Peterson on Aug. 19, 2007.

She is survived by her husband Charles “Bud” Beckwith of Mesa, son Doug (Ruth) Beckwith of Saginaw and their children Astrid, Erik, Cyrus and Luke, son Dan (Trudace) Beckwith of Duluth and their children Brant, Carrissa and Tanner, daughter Diane (Jerry) Latimer of Britt and children Questa (John) Knapper and their children Daniel and Johanna, Nathanial Mitchell and his son Christian, son Dean Beckwith of Embarrass and daughter Denise (Leo) Pusateri and children Dustin (Stephanie) Vickmark, Darrin Vickmark, Douglas Vickmark, Jackson Barnes, and stepson Leo Pusateri III, and her “nearly human” dog and walking companion “Little Bit”.

June E. Chase
Beth (Paul) Sorenson of Proctor is in bereavement following the death of her mother, June E. Chase. The North 51st Ave West resident passed away Sun., Sept. 30, 2007 in St Luke’s Hospice. She was 72.

She was born in Duluth on July 13, 1935 to Alvin and Clarice Anderson. She graduated from Denfeld High School in 1953 and married Robert Chase on Sept 30, 1955 in Duluth. She was active in the P.T.A. while her children were growing up.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a great-grandson Nicholas.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years Robert, two other daughters Becky (George) Kane of Superior and Colette (Ray) Sebesta of Duluth, sons Tim (Mary) of San Jose, Calif., Guy of Osage, Iowa and Barrett of Duluth, grandchildren Bob, Joe, Jessica, Dan, Mark, Nicole, Elizabeth, Stephanie and Katie, great-grandchildren Bobby, Alyssa, Austin, Ethan, Emily, Carter, Christian, Elise and Landon, a brother Reg (Ann) Anderson of Duluth, a sister Sharon (Wally) Ruce of Duluth, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation from 2 until the 3 p.m. service today, Thursday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Burial at Oneota Cemetery.

Robert “Bob” Carl Rodd
Nicole (John) Rackliffe of Proctor is mourning the death of her father, Robert “Bob” Carl Rodd. The Carlton resident passed away Mon., Sept. 24, 2007 in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. He was 73.

Bob was preceded in death by a son Kevin, brother Jack, and sisters Shirley and Jeanine.

He is also survived by his wife Leola of Carlton, children Tracy (Kristy) Rodd of Lake Elmo, Julie (Patrick) Gephart and Christopher (Anne Marie) Skelton, both of Calif., grandchildren Kayla, Ryan, Mallory, Matthew, Dylan, Darron, Katie, Ty, Chelsea, Derek, Courtney and Sydney, and brothers Frank and George (Arlene), both of Cloquet.

A Memorial Service was held Sept. 29, 2007 in Carlton.
