Hazel Marie Young
Hazel Marie Young of Proctor passed away Mon., Jan. 7, 2008 in Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Proctor. She was 90.
She was born on Jan. 24, 1917 to William and Macie (Moss) Crumrine in Webb City, Mo. Hazel graduated from Webb City High School in Missouri in 1935. She married Richard Young in 1951. At the age of 21 she went to Detroit, Mich. and worked for General Motors. She started out as a laborer and worked up to an inspector, retiring in 1972 after 40 years. After retirement, Hazel and her family lived in National City, Mich. She was a member of Road Patrol, very active in the community center, and enjoyed spending time with her husband in retirement.
She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Young in 2005.
She is survived by her son Lee (Joan) Heine of Proctor, granddaughters Dawn Marie Heine (Jonathan) of Duluth and Robin Leigh Heine of Proctor, grandsons Steven (Krystl) Heine of Anna, Texas and Richard Paul (Stacey) Heine of Proctor, great-grandson A.J. Knudsen of Duluth, and great-granddaughters Macie Morgan Heine, Madeline Elizabeth Heine and Grace Marie Heine.
Interment Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery.
Douglas E. Spindler
Proctor native Douglas E Spindler passed away Sun., Dec. 30, 2007, the day before his wife’s birthday. He was 58.
Doug was a 1967 Cathedral High School graduate. He was a Pine City deputy sheriff and detective before moving to Roseville. He enjoyed returning to watch UMD hockey.
He is survived by his wife Beth, son John (Sandy), grandchildren Jered, Brianna, Hailey, Justin and Jonah, mother Ellen, sisters JoAnne and Jeannette (Mike), brothers Joseph, David (Terri) and Kerry, uncles, aunts and many nieces, nephews and friends who loved him.
A Mass of Christian burial was held Fri., Jan. 4, at St. James Catholic Church in St. Paul.
Ruby Marion LaRoque
Alice McGovern of Proctor is saddened by the loss of her sister Ruby Marion LaRoque. The Hermantown resident died Sun., Dec. 30, 2007, in Viewcrest Health Center. She was 90.
Ruby was born in Duluth on Oct. 14, 1917 to Cyril and Alvina (St. Arnold) Archambeau. She was the 11th of 14 children. She owned and operated Ruby and Norm’s Grocery. She also worked at Northwood Children’s Home and retired from St. Luke’s Hospital. Ruby enjoyed her home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and five sisters, a great-grandson, her husbands Norman Johnson and Norman LaRoque, and her companion Rueben Ness.
Ruby is survived by her daughter Carol (Lester) Pauna of Duluth and son Stanley (Bertha Colman) Johnson of Atlanta, Ga., grandchildren Gary (Bonnie) Pauna, Cheryl (Gary) Olson, Randy (Rita) Pauna, Kevin (Cheryl) Pauna, Jamie (Shelly) Pauna, Danny (Lisa) Pauna, Patrick Johnson and Lisa Johnson, brother Lenard Archambeau of Hermantown, 23 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at Viewcrest Health Center for the love and care they gave Ruby.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wed., Jan. 2, 2008, in St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park.
P. Rachel Helland
P. Rachel Helland of Solway Township died Mon., Jan. 21, 2008, in St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth. She was 83.
Rachel was born in Knife Falls to Samuel and Hannah Prevost. She graduated from Cloquet High School in 1942 and then graduated from Duluth Business College. She married George Helland. Rachel was a homemaker and also worked at the Duluth Chamber of Commerce and retired from JC Penney’s catalog department. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Rachel loved visiting with family and friends and enjoyed sports, travel, and genealogy.
Rachel was preceded in death by her husband George in 1979.
She is survived by sons Byron (RoxAnne) and their children Rebecca (Scott) Crain, Adam and Elizabeth, Dale (Patricia) and their children Kate, Alex and Eric, and Fred (Brenda) and their children Natalie and Amanda, brother George (Josephine) Prevost, sisters Beulah (Louis) Whitney and Jeanne (Eino) Nyquist, and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Sat., Jan. 26, 2008, in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Cloquet.
Spring burial will be at Solway Cemetery, Solway Township.
Mary “Mary B” Decker
Mary “Mary B” Decker of Bayview passed away Mon., Jan. 21, 2008, in Duluth at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was 64.
She was born to Russell and Marion Johnson Aug. 14, 1943, in Duluth. She graduated from Central High School, and later as an LPN. She worked many years as a geriatric nurse. Mary loved her children and grandchildren very much. She also enjoyed traveling and cooking.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Carter.
Mary is survived by her loving husband Walter “Wray” Decker, daughter Beth Sazama-Hart of Denver, Colo., son Jason Sazama, step-children Shannon Martin of Dexter, Kan., Ramo Decker of Mankato, Kan., Shonda Decker of Las Vegas, Nev., Travis Decker of Wakeeney, Kan. and Brandon Decker of Hays, Kan., grandchildren Annie, Phillip and Drew, six step-grandchildren, brother Russell Johnson, sister-in-law Cheryl Larson, step-mother Evelyn Damron of Topeka, Kan. and extended family and friends.
A memorial service was held Sat., Jan. 26, 2008 in the Cremation Society.
Betty L. Halverson
Betty L. Halverson, of Bayview, passed away on Fri., Jan. 25, 2008, at the Franciscan Health Center. She was 81.
She was born Oct. 3, 1926 in Cloquet, to Frithjof “Fritz” and Ruth (nee Anderson) Angell. Betty graduated from Cloquet High School in 1944 and from Duluth Junior College in 1946. She continued her education at the University of Minnesota-Mpls., with a double major in English and journalism. She had several articles published in the Minneapolis Star Tribune. She married Gordon O. Halverson on August 1, 1947. Her work experiences included positions with the Duluth Public Library, the Manney Shopper, Metz Baking Co., and the Senior Dining Program. She had written feature stories for the Duluth Budgeteer. Betty was a member of Forbes United Methodist Church in Proctor, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and chairman of various committees, a member of the Trinity Chapter #242 Order of the Eastern Star, an adult committee chairperson for Job’s Daughters Bethel #90, Proctor Bayview PTA, where she served as a room mother and served as secretary for several years, was a Brownie Scout Leader and an Election Judge. Betty enjoyed hiking, swimming, flower gardening, playing cards and reading. She was very outgoing and a natural conversationalist.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Leroy Angell.
Betty is survived by daughters Christine (James) Youngman of Duluth, Constance (Gregory) Zeman of Washburn, Wis. and Joy Johnson of Proctor, son Gordon Scott (JoAnne) Halverson of Hermantown, grandchildren Adam and Amanda Youngman, Kira and Kurt Zeman, Erik and Melissa Johnson, and Steven, Christopher and Mark Olson, great-grandchildren Paige and Simon Olson, sister-in-law Kathryn Angell and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation today, Thursday, 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Funeral Service at Forbes United Methodist Church, Proctor. Rev. Greg Ciesluk officiating. Burial at Atkinson Community Cemetery.
Memorials to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Assn. or Forbes United Methodist Women are preferred.
Glaesner, Gerald P. “Jerry”
Glaesner, Gerald P. “Jerry” passed away peacefully into the presence of his Savior on Dec. 17, 2007, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King, Wisc., four days after his 86th birthday.
He was born on December 13, 1921 in Milwaukee, Wisc. to Max and Ann (nee Pylet) Glaesner.
Jerry graduated from Washington High School in 1939 and was on the school’s diving team. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the North African and European theater as a medic. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He worked simultaneously at Sears, as a shoe salesman and at Coca Cola as a route salesman. Jerry then worked at Pepsi and Gettleman Brewery. When Miller Brewery bought out Gettleman in 1967, Jerry came into his own while at Miller and was soon promoted to City Sales Manager. His shoe selling days were over. At Miller, he honed his superb talent for schmoozing and was recognized for it with several promotions which took him to Illinois and then New Hampshire. He became the Regional Sales Manager for all of New England and upstate New York in 1974. He retired from Miller in 1983 after 20 plus years. He and Jackie decided to move to a warmer climate and finally settled in Sun City, AZ in 1986.
Jerry was an avid golfer and bowler until health problems made it difficult for him to participate. He continued to be an avid card player up until the last days of his life. However, his favorite past time was watching the American Movie Channel. You could always find him in his favorite recliner, with remote control in hand. He could watch those old movies over and over again, much to the consternation of Jackie. Jerry was a gentle and personable man, who always rolled with life’s punches. He relied on his favorite expression of “Whatever” in the more trying times in his life. As evidence of his easy-going nature and contrary to the standard relationships between in-laws, Jerry housed and supported his mother-in-law Evelyn for 28 years making him a viable candidate for sainthood. He was the delight of the staff at the Veteran’s Home at King where he lived the last 4 months of his life. He was especially loved by the young CNAs who provided most of his care. Their genuine outpouring of love, compassion and respect for him was truly comforting.
Jerry was the loving husband for 48 years of Jacquelyn “Jackie” (nee Bjornaas, originally from Proctor,) of Hartford, Wisc.. Beloved father of Candice (David) Polgar of Cedar Grove, Wisc., and Robert (Marla Jane) Glaesner of Vista, Calif.. Beloved stepfather of Jody (Dean) Probst, proud step grandfather of Josh and Travis Probst, treasured great step grandfather of Riley and Isaak Probst all of Hartford, Wisc. Further survived by other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Robert Glaesner and a sister-in-law Audrey Glaesner.
According to Jerry’s wishes no formal funeral services will be held.
William Kuehn
William Kuehn, who was born in Proctor, passed away June 13, 2008. He was 75.
The Duluth resident was born on March 26, 1933 to Henry and Euphemia Kuehn. Bill went to Central High School. He graduated from Salter School with a certificate in electric motor repair. He was a longtime employee of Benson Electric Co. in Superior. Bill spent a lot of time on the Great Lakes Ore boats.
Bill is preceded in death by his first wife, Gail (Peterson); second wife, Sharon (Bailey); brothers, Roy Kuehn and Raymond Kuehn.
He is survived by his children, Tina (Larry) Spaniol, Kelley Lees, Rory (Christina Wagner) Kuehn, Gary Kuehn, and Kurt (Annie) Kuehn; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Howard (Margie) Kuehn; sister-in-law, Roberta Kuehn; and many nieces and nephews.
