Theodora Rose Matusas, 8-month-old daughter of Jeannette and Tom Matusas of 331 Parsonage Road, Edison, N.J., Aug. 3, 1999 at Beth Israel Hospital of a cardiac arrest.
Mass of the Angels will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Aloysious Catholic Church in Jersey City, N.J., with burial in New Jersey.
Visitation will be 2- 4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Browns Funeral Home in Nutley, N.J. Local arrangements are being handled by the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
She is survived by her parents, Tom and Jeanette (Smith) Matusas of Edison, N.J.; grandparents Dan and Joyce (Kuck) Smith of Jersey City, N.J.; great grandmothers, Florence Kuck of Searles, Minn., and Ann Smith of New Jersey; one aunt, four uncles, and one cousin.
She was preceded in death by her great grandfathers, Glenn Kuck and Charlie Smith.

Merle Gaalswyk, 86, of St. James, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, in Rochester.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, St. James, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, St. James.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today and 7:30-9 a.m. Saturday at Sturm Funeral Home St. James, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church.
She is survived by her husband, Marion of St. James; children, Meridee and husband Gary Wolner of St. James, Richard and wife Sheila of Cottage Grove. Beverly and husband Bob King of Charles City, Iowa, Beatrice and husband David King of Charles City, Iowa and Vonnie and husband Gerry Klaras of Prescott, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Sanford and wife Bernice Anderson of St. James; sister, Thelma and husband Ervin Wassman of Ormsby; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Anderson of Ormsby.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Melvin and Clair.
She was born April 4, 1913, in St. James to Carl and Amanda (Stenberg) Anderson. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from St. James High School. She attended St. Olaf College and the University of Minnesota and graduated with a degree in home economics. She married Marion Gaalswyk on July 18, 1942, in Martin County. The couple farmed near St. James. She was a former member of the Waverly Lutheran Church and a current member of First Lutheran Church, St. James. She was a member of Clovia Sorority, W.E.L.C.A., Home Ec Club and Bridge Club.

Arthur J. Gronholz, 86, formerly of Sunset Apartments in New Ulm, died Wednesday Aug. 4, 1999, at Winthrop Good Samaritan Center.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and will continue for one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.
He is survived by sons and daughters in law, Gene and Carol Gronholz of Ft. Atkinson, Wis., Jerry and Miriam Gronholz of Appleton, Wis., John (Jack) and Memory Gronholz of New Ulm, and James and Lin Gronholz of Winthrop; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Adelgunde, on March 21, 1996; a daughter Judith Gronholz; grandson, Reid Gronholz; sisters, Alvina Brinkman, Esther Gronholz, Myrtle Zarn, and Emielie Hulke; brothers, Paul, and John, Gronholz and another brother in infancy.
He was born on Nov. 13, 1912 in Courtland Township, Nicollet County to John and Emilia (Thordson) Gronholz. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School in rural Courtland. He married Adelgunde Wacker on Feb. 24, 1937, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. They lived in New Ulm for a short period before moving to Elgin, Ill., where he worked for Illinois Tool Works. They moved back to the New Ulm area in the early 1950s, where he farmed for several years. He then worked as a trucker. From 1969-1979 he worked at Dr. Martin Luther College (DMLC) in New Ulm until he retired in 1979. During retirement he worked as the custodian for St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church and at Brown County Family Service. He was a member for St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was past treasurer and also served on other various church councils and committees. He has been a resident of the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center since July 1, 1998.

Lisa Ann McGlocklin, 33, of Gaylord, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999 in Penn Township, McLeod County.
Visitation will be noon-2 p.m. Saturday at Fenske Family Funeral Home, Gaylord, followed by a graveside service at Gaylord City Cemetery.
She is survived by her fiance Michael Wlasiuk of Gaylord; son Philip McGlocklin of Gaylord; brothers, Phillip of Hibbing and Michael of Minneapolis; sister Pamela of Blue Earth; parents John and Pat Wlasiuk of Brainerd; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Tim and Jackie Wlasiuk of Gaylord, Cindy and Bruce Pettis and Joshua of St. Paul, and Jeff and Suzanne Wlasiuk of Ironton; and grandma Bea of Wadena.
She was born Dec. 11, 1965 in Glendale, Calif. to Donald Estley and Opal (Bond) Sneed. She was employed by Breyers Cafe of Glencoe, Empak of Waconia and Casey's General Store of Gaylord.

Joan Schlumpberger, 63, of 723 North German St., New Ulm died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999 at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-9:30 a.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.
Joan is survived by a daughter, Mary Miller of New Ulm; a son, John Schlumpberger of Hanover; three grandchildren; and a great grandchild; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Ann and James Graeve of St. Joseph, and Rose and Gene Flaig of Young America; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Rose Hesse of Minneapolis; also by a special friend Richard Boeder.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Donald Hesse; and also by a foster son, Peter.
Joan was born Nov. 25, 1935 in Redwood County, to Ferdinand and Mary (Ruschke) Hesse. She attended Springfield Public Schools. She worked for Dannheim's Kuhstall in New Ulm. She later worked for KNUJ Radio in sales, then she worked for Jackpot Junction in Morton. She was the restaurant manager at Holiday Inn in New Ulm, and later worked for Brown County Human Services and most recently she worked for Mark and Brenda Wiger (MBW) in New Ulm. She was a menber of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, where she was a lector and also a eucharistic minister. She visited the nursing home residents and the shut-ins on behalf of St. Mary's Church. She was a former member of the Toastmasters Club in New Ulm.

Rita M. Franta, 61 of South Minneapolis died Wednesday, August 4, 1999 at her daughter's home in Apple Valley.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church, 3637 11th Ave, South in South Minneapolis. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at St. George Catholic Cemetery, St. George.
Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday with a prayer service at 4 p.m. at the Henry W. Anderson Mortuary, 3640 23rd. Ave So., Minneapolis.
She is survived by her daughters; Christine and her husband Rex Laporte, Carol and her husband Davie Rea, and Catherine Konakowitz; three grandsons; her father, Fremont Franta; sisters Theresa Franta, Marge and her husband Keith Richer, and Julie and her husband Jim Oestreich; brother Ken Franta; nieces and nephews.
She was preceeded in death by her mother Minnie Franta.

Othelia Caroline "Tuts" Firle, 95 of Fairfax, died Friday, August 6, 1999, at the Fairfax Community Home.
Services will be Monday, 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Fairfax, with burial in Bethel Cemetery in Cairo Township, Renville County.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-8 a.m. Monday at the Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Fairfax. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
She is survived by her sons: Owen Firle and wife Margie of Minneapolis, Chuck Firle and wife Joyce of Fairfax; daughters, Delores Young of Fairfax and Vernette Kiecker and her husband, Myron of Fairfax; son-in-law, Don Becker of LeSuer; 20 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Albert in 1972; parents; a son in infancy; daughter Janet Becker; son-in-law LaVern Young; grandchildren Julianne Young, Ross Firle and David Pierce; great-grandchild, Anna Brooks; three brothers; four sisters.
She was born Feb. 21, 1904 in Buffalo Lake, the daughter of Ole and Caroline (Gunderson) Jenson. She moved to Fairfax, with her family in 1909. She married Albert Firle Sept. 3, 1924. After marriage, they lived in Bird Island and Gibbon, before settling on the home farm site in Cairo Township, Renville County. After Albert's death, she moved to the Golden Oaks Apartments in Fairfax. She entered the Fairfax Community Home in 1987. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fairfax, where she had served as a past president and various office holder of the United Methodist Women. She had also served the church as a trustee and as the church organist. She was a 4-H leader and member of a home extension group. She belonged to the Kitchen Klatter Band, which performed at the Minnesota State Fair and the State Captiol and she was named Renville County Senior Citizen Queen in the late 1970's.

Leo Burtzel, 76, of Redwood Falls, died Friday, August 6, 1999 at the Redwood Falls Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church of Redwood Falls with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held Monday 4-8 p.m., with a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Redwood Falls, and Tuesday 8-10 a.m..

Lyle "Skip" Olson, 72, of Hanska, died Friday, August 6, 1999, at the Madelia Community Hospital.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 to 12 p.m. Monday at the Firle Funeral Home in Hanska and one hour prior to service at the church.
He is survived by his sisters, Kathy Erickson and her husband Jerome of Hanska, Karen Haack and her husband Gordon of New Ulm; brothers Gene Olson and his wife Marleta of Porland, Oregon, Larry Olson of Hanska; stepmother, Irene Olson; aunts, Inga Olson of Hanska, Violet Ahlness of Hanska, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his father, mother; sisters, Ramona Frederickson, Verna Manker; brother-in-law, Leo Fredrickson.
He was born on Feb. 13, 1927 in Linden Township Minnesota, the son of Benard and Esther (Lemke) Olson. He worked on several farms all his life. He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Leo Wenzel Burtzel, 76, of Redwood Falls, died Friday, August 6, 1999, at the Redwood Falls Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held 4-8 p.m. Monday with a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home in Redwood Falls. Visitation will continue 8-10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
He is survived by his wife Mary Lou of Redwood Falls; children: Jean Koewler and husband Jerry of Redwood Falls, Joan Burtzel of San Francisco, Calif., Susan Moore and fiancee Gary Cooper of Blaine, Steven Burtzel and his wife Cheryl of Austin, Texas, Janet Meyers and husband Chris of Winthrop; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Sophie Du Pree of Portland, Ore.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
He was born March 5, 1923, in Sheridan Township, Redwood County, the son of Joseph and Mary (Weisner) Burtzel. He grew up on the family farm and attended area schools until age 15, when he attended high school in Tintah, following the death of his parents. He graduated in 1941. He entered the United States Navy in 1945 during WW II and was discharged in 1946. On May 13, 1947, he married Mary Lou Bliss at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Seaforth. They made their home and farmed in Sheridan Township, rural Wabasso, for 39 years, retiring in 1986 and moving to Redwood Falls. He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church of Redwood Falls and the American Legion, Post 275 of Seaforth.

Rosella Hanson, 76, of Buffalo Lake died Saturday, August 7, 1999, at the Glencoe Area Health Center.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Stewart with burial in the Oakland Cemetery in Hutchinson.
Visitation will be Tuesday 5-8 p.m. at the Hughes Funeral Home in Stewart and one hour prior to the service at the church.

"Buck" Hayes, 82, of Windom died at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., Friday, August 6, 1999.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom with burial following in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Anderson-Schmidt Funeral Home in Windom 4-8 p.m. Tuesday with parish prayers at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church in Windom.
He is survived by his wife, Opal Hayes of Windom, children and their spouses: Stephen and Carol Hayes of Comfrey; Warren and Betsy Hayes of Hastings; Teresa and Alan Pudenz of Jeffers; Jerome and Alice Hayes of Mountain Lake; Cecelia and Lynn Krueger of Hudson, Wis.; sisters, Levita Popken of Sleepy Eye; Louella Roddy of Santa Monica, Calif.; Elaine Blackmun and her husband, Doug of East Grand Forks; Lois Kovacovich and her husband, Bob of Danville, Calif.; brothers, Richard Hayes and his wife, Mary of Glencoe; Ronald Hayes and wife Connie of Austin; 11 grandchildren, and eight great -grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, and three sisters, Marcella, Loretta and Joann.
He was born Aug. 1, 1917, to Joseph L. and Alice (Savage) Hayes Sr. in Delton Township, Cottonwood County. He attended parochial school in Comfrey through the eighth grade and then attended high school in Comfrey. He helped his family out around the farm for several years until he moved off the farm and worked for several different farmers over several years until he married Opal Albright on Dec. 6, 1941, in Windom. After marriage, the couple farmed in Delton Township, Cottonwood County until 1970, when they moved to Windom and he began to work for the Cottonwood County Highway Department as a sign man. In 1987, he retired from the Highway Department. He was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom.
