Donald Bartz, 70, of Isle, formerly of rural Morton, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Nelson Funeral Home, Redwood Falls, with burial in the Morton City Cemetery.
Visitation is noon until time of services Saturday at Nelson Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife Ruth; children, Diane Fjerstad of Taylor Falls, Debra Lyback of Isle and James of St. Cloud, as well as many adopted and foster children, including Theresa Bartz, of the family home; sisters, Grace Lothert and Marilyn Vogl and husband Donald of Morton; and sister-in-law Margaret Bartz of Morton.
He was preceded in death by son William; daughter Carol; brothers, Robert and Arnold Bartz in 1985; and sisters, Mildred and Rose Marie.
He was born Jan. 27, 1929, in Redwood Falls, to William and Leona (Fogel) Bartz. He attended District 28 country schools in Renville County and also attended agriculture school at Morris. He married Ruth Hyde on Dec. 28, 1950, in Minneapolis. They lived in Renville County and then moved to Minneapolis for a short time before moving to Isle where they have lived for the past 25 years. He farmed years ago and ran a resort in Isle for a number of years before retiring. He was a member of the Lutheran Church in Isle.

Gladys M. Flantz, 72, of Gaylord, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at Fairview University Medical Center, Minneapolis.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sibley Township, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday at Fenske Funeral Home, Gaylord, and will continue Saturday one hour prior to services at the church.
She is survived by son, Bruce Flantz and wife Melanie Williams of Winthrop; daughters, Anita Flantz and husband Michael Rahn of Salinas, Calif. and Mary and husband Alan Marschall of Burnsville; sisters, Irene and husband Lawrence Krecklau of Hutchinson, Leona Skaro of Gaylord, and Sarah Swenson of St. Peter; brother John and wife Eleanor Paulmann of Gaylord; and grandchildren, Maggie and Geordie Flantz, Alyssa Rahn and Amelia and Ted Marschall.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Dale on Nov. 19, 1989.
She was born Aug. 14, 1926 in New Auburn Township, to John and Katherine (Trocke) Paulmann. She was a 1944 graduate of Arlington-Green Isle High School and attended Glencoe Teachers College for a year. She taught in rural school for five years in the Sibley County area. She married Dale Flantz on Oct. 1, 1949 in New Auburn Township. She was a homemaker, a member of Gideons Circle and WELCA.

Cora Markeson, 90, of St. James, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999 at St. james Health Services Hospital.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at La Salle Lutheran Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is one hour prior to services at the church.
Pease Funeral Home, St. James, is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by son DuWayne (Duke) and wife Marlys of Wayzata; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; sister-in-law Stella Paulson of Sleepy Eye; and brother-in-law Clifford markeson of Mankato.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son Charles; one brother; and four sisters.
She was born Nov. 13, 1908 in Lake Hanska Township, Brown County, to Peter and Tilda (Thompson) Paulson. She attended rural school in Lake Hanska and Linden townships and graduated from Hanska High School in 1923. She married Lawrence Markeson on March 30, 1926 in Lake Hanska. They lived in several communities in the area then moved to La Salle in 1948 and to St. James in 1984. She was a member of La Salle Lutheran Church

Esther Bertha Pankonin, 89, of Sanborn, died Thursday, August 12, 1999 at Valley View Manor, Lamberton.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Red Rock United Methodist Church, Germantown Township, Redwood County, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday at Red Rock United Methodist Church.
Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield, is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by grandchildren, Randy and wife Kelly of Sanborn and Jeff and wife Michelle, all of Sanborn, Sue and husband Jeff Rosenstengel of Springfield and Shelly of Sanborn; eight great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law Sharon and husband Maynard Beyer of Sanborn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Marvin in 1994; son Darrel in 1993; great-grandson Colby in infancy; sister Ruffina Beussman; and brothers Art and Eldo Hohman.
She was born Jan. 3, 1910 in Charlestown Township, Redwood County, to Henry and Agusta (Trapp) Hohman. She grew up on the family farm and attended Zion Lutheran School. She worked at Dietz Grocery Store in Sanborn prior to her marriage. She married Marvin Pankonin June 14, 1934 in Sanborn. The couple made their home on a farm in Germantown Township, where they farmed for over 50 years. In 1987 the couple retired and moved into Sanborn. She was a member of Red Rock United Methodist Church, Germantown Township.

John B. Groebner, 45, of rural Clements, died Thursday, August 12,1999 at the family farm in rural Clements
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Clement, with burial in St. Joseph's Catholic Cernetery, Clements.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield, and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday at the church. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. and a Catholic Aid Rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Sunday.
He is survived by sisters, Diane Harrington of Moorhead, Judith May of Mankato, Mary I Groebner of Spokane, Wash.; Helen and husband Joe Cantu of Blaine; brothers, Linus Groebner of Clements, Dominic Groebner of Clements, Francis and wife Rhonda Groebner of Cobden, Jerome Groebner of Redwood Falls; a sister-in-law Rose Groebner of Revillo, S.D. and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Cletus.
He was born Jan. 28, 1954 in Springfield to Leo J. and Eleanor Lena (Fuchs) Groebner. He grew up in Sundown Township and graduated from Springfield High School and Southwest State University in Marshall. Following college he worked in agricultural electronics in Mankato. In 1993 he returned home to begin farming with his family and he also worked at CashWise in New Ulm in maintenance. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Clements, Catholic Aid, the Prairieland Flywheelers 2 Cylinder Club, and served on the board of directors of MnVAP (Minnesota Valley Alfalfa Producers).

Thomas J. Kahle, 62, of 911 11th South St. in New Ulm died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at his home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm, with burial in St. Aloyisius Catholic Cemetery, Olivia.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-10 a.m. Monday at the funeral Home. There will be a parish prayer serivce at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Thomas J. Kahle, 62, of 911 - 11th South St., New Ulm, died Friday at his home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial in St. Aloyisius Catholic Cemetery in Olivia.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today and 7:30-10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. There will be a parish prayer serivce at 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He is survived by his sisters and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Harvey Marquardt of New Ulm, Eleanor Helget of Elk River, and Roselyn McIntyre of Maple Grove; brothers and sisters-in-law, Louis and Dolores Kahle of New Ulm, and Adolph and Dori Kahle of Lake Elsimore, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Edwin in infancy.
He was born Dec. 25, 1936 in New Ulm to August and Rose (Majxner) Kahle. He graduated from New Ulm High School. After school he served in the Army Reserves for six years and continued
living in New Ulm. He worked for Webcor in New Ulm for a number of years before working for the New Ulm City Engineering Department. He had a hobby of woodworking, gardening, and both making and collecting clocks. He was a member of the 452nd Quarter Master Company Direct Support of Winthrop.

Alice M. Holt, 90, of Belview died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999 at the Parkview Home in Belview.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Rock Den Lutheran Church rural Belview, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Sunset Funeral Home in Echo and continue Wednesday one hour prior to services at the Rock Dell Lutheran Church. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
She is survived by her five children, Beatrice Siegfried and husband Marvin of Donna, Texas, Dorothy Siegfried and husband Ervin of Coon Rapids, James Holt and wife Caryl Dee of Knoxville, Tenn., David Holt and wife Doris of Blaine, and Glenn Holt and wife Lynn of Orange, Calif.; 17 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, two sisters, Bernice Bronkhurst of Sedona, Ariz., and Frances Kissner of Granite Falls; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gunder; brothers, Arthur in infancy, John, Henry, and Lawrence, and sisters, Cora Boklep, Minnie Ellingson, and Josephine Meno.
She was born May 1, 1909 in Kintire Township, Redwood County, to Carl and Josie Boldep. She was baptized and confirmed in the Rock Dell. Lutheran Church, as were her children and several grandchildren. She was a life-long member of the Rock Dell Lutheran Church, its oldest current member, and belonged to the Ladies Aid from the time of her marriage through her honorary membership to the time of her death. She attended country school District # 50 and the Belview High School. On Dec. 21, 1926 she married Gunder Holt in the Rock Dell. Parsonage and they farmed near Belview until moving into Belview in 1958. Gunder died on May 14,1979.
Alice enjoyed cooking, gardening, ceramics, sewing, and painting. She had several one-woman shows featuring her art work at the Redwood Falls. She won many awards at Redwood County Fairs for her painting and sewing. Besides being active in her church, she was busy with community events. She enjoyed being a member of the Parkview Manor Auxiliary and the Belview Civic Club. She also belonged to a birthday club for nearly 40 years. Alice and Gunder took many trips including trips to Norway, England, and Hawaii as well as traveling many sections of the United States and Canada.

Martin J. H. Schwanz, 84, of St. James, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999 in St. James.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, South Branch Township, with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Lewisville American Legion.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Monday and 7:30-11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sturm Funeral Home, St. James, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
He is survived by his wife Doris; sons, Gary and wife Karla of St. James and Gerald and wife Jeanne of Truman; four grandchildren; brothers, Gilbert and wife Lucille of Truman and George and wife Mary Jo of Brooklyn Center; sisters, Esther Vogt of Fairmont, Gertrude Mau of Fairmont, Evelyn and husband Robert Bonkoski of Mountain Lake, Ruth and husband Herman Wentzel of St. Paul, and Dorothy Kettner of Truman; sister-in-law Leora Becker of Truman; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Loretta Anderson, Veda Schwanz and Marlene Schwanz.
He was born Oct. 28, 1914 in South Branch Township, Watonwan County, to Herman and Anna (Klinger) Schwanz. He grew up and attended country school in South Branch Township. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and served during WWII, until he was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Doris Becker on May 5, 1946 in South Branch Township. He farmed in South Branch Township from 1946 to 1977, when he retired. He remained on the farm until moving to St. James in 1984. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, South Branch Township, where he served on the board. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 561, Lewisville.

Mathilda R. Johnson, 85, of Sleepy Eye died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999 in Sleepy Eye.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye.
She is survived by brothers, Christ and wife Violet Johnson of Buffalo Lake, Wilbert Johnson of Sleepy Eye, and Lester and wife Marian Johnson of Sleepy Eye; a sister Eleanor Buche of Sleepy Eye; several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Hazel Johnson, Verna Groff, Mary Johnson and Verdina Johnson; brothers-in-law Halvor Groff and Lavern Buche; and three brothers in infancy.
Mathilda grew up in Prairieville Township and attended country school. She continued to work on the family farm following her schooling, and has lived on that farm her entire life.
For a period of time, she had also worked at Del Monte in Sleepy Eye, Tony Downs Foods in St. James and Haas Press, which later became AUI in Sleepy Eye until her retirement.
She was a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Elsie Fering Alvine, 99, of Lamberton, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999 at St. Luke's Lutheran Care Center, Blue Earth.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Lamberton, with burial in the city cemetery.
Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church.
Sturm Funeral Home, Lamberton, is handling the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Lamberton.
She is survived by a daughter Joan Smith of Decatur, Ill.; a son Charles and wife Phyllis Fering of Blue Earth; a sister Irene Wiemken of Decatur, Ill.; a son-in-law John and wife Connie Josse of Palo Alto, Calif.; step-daughters Yvonne and husband Eugene Jaycox of Pipestone, Charlynn and husband Richard Krogstad of Spearfish, S.D.; step-grandchildren; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Clarence Fering and Harold Alvine; brothers, Bruno and Elmer Petsch; and da aughter Donna Lou Josse.
She was born June 7, 1900 in Wentworth, S.D., to Charles and Louise (Busch) Petsch. She graduated from Wentworth High School in 1920 and then attended business college in Mankato. She worked as an assistant cashier at First National Bank, Lamberton. She married Clarence Fering on Oct. 2, 1923 in Wentworth. They farmed south of Lamberton. Clarence died Sept. 11, 1961. She married Harold Alvine on Feb. 26, 1966 in Lamberton. Harold died Dec. 6, 1983. She was an active member of Sharon Lutheran Church and Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Lamberton. She served on the Altar Guild, was a member of the Reading Club, Perennial Garden Club and the Tuesday Morning Coffee Club.
