Norman Johnson
Services will be held today for Norman T. Johnson. The former Proctor resident, who captained the University of Minnesota - Duluth’s football team and was credited with changing the mascot from Gophers to Bulldogs, died Sun., Nov. 28, 1999 in his Duluth home. He was 87.

He was born in Duluth and lived all of his life in Proctor and Duluth. He graduated from Duluth State Teachers College, now known as University of Minnesota-Duluth. He was named all-conference. He then worked for U.S. Steel Corp. from 1936 until he retired in 1974 while working in the wire mill.

He was a member of Our Savior’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a 50-year member of Euclid Masonic Lodge 198 AF & AM and a charter member of Euclid Choir. He belonged to Scottish Rite, Valley of Duluth; Euclid Chapter 56, Order of the Eastern Star and Duluth Chapter of DeMolay. He sang with the Greysolon Singers, was an avid golfer and bowler, and was a champion diver of the YMCA swim team. He played on the National Guard basketball team.

He is survived by daughters JoJean (John) Petrovich of Henderson, Nev. and Patricia (David) Mattson of Duluth, sons Norman R. (Connie) of Hermantown and Wayne (Jackie) of Inyokern, Calif., brothers Gordon (Ruth) of Modesto, Calif. and Robert (Dorothy) of Duluth, a sister-in-law Louana Johnson of Duluth, 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Service at 11 a.m. Thurs. (today) in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Alfred F. Malmstein
Alfred F. Malmstein, who was a Proctor Police Officer for 31 years, died Fri., Dec. 3, 1999 in a hospital in Florida. He was 90.

He was born in Midway Township and also worked as a Boilermaker for 36 years with the DM&IR Railway. He moved to Fla. in 1977 and was a Summerfield, Fla. resident. He was a member of the Proctor Moose Lodge 1302 and Euclid Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Malmstein was preceded in death by his parents Nels and Hannah Malmstein,brothers Hjalmer, Carl, Melvin and Harry Malmstein and sisters Lidia Anderson and Esther Dahlberg.

He is survived by his wife Malvina of Summerfield, two daughters Joan (Chuck) Gilderman of Port Charlotte, Fla. and Beverly (Randy) Janke of Summerfield, one son Richard A. (Gayle) Malmstein of Proctor, one sister Mabel Gustafson of Duluth, 14 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Lucile M. Nelson
Lucile M. Nelson, who was born in Proctor, died Thurs., Dec. 2, 1999 in Chris Jensen Nursing Home. She was 98.

She was born Aug. 3, 1901, to Samuel and Clara Nelson. Lucile began her career in the Duluth Library system at the downtown library in the children’s room. She was later transferred to the Lester Park Library. On Aug. 16, 1943, she took over as librarian of the Woodland Branch Library.

Lucile was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Leah Circle.

She was preceded in death by her sister Mildred Swenson and brothers R. Clifford, Vernon and Fred Nelson.

Lucile is survived by her nieces Midge (Mark) Peterson of Duluth and Myra (Roger) DeByle of Duluth and Green Valley Ariz., a nephew Jarl (Carmen) Nelson of Torrance, Calif., and several grandnieces and grandnephews and great-grandnieces and great grandnephews.

Burial was in Park Hill Cemetery.

Henry Brendengen
Lifelong Proctor resident and businessman Henry Brendengen died Sat., Dec. 11, 1999 in a Duluth hospital. He was 83.

He was born in Duluth. Henry served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was owner and operator of Brendengen Sales and Service in Proctor for 33 years until he retired. Henry married Doris Mae Ross on March 2, 1942, in Duluth. He was a lifetime member of Proctor Moose Lodge 1302, a 50-year member of Proctor American Legion Post 106, Euclid Lodge 186 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Duluth and Aad Temple Shrine and its Chanters. He was a former member of Forbes United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Doris in 1989, and sons James in 1952 and Michael in 1969.

He is survived by sons George S. and Richard D. of Proctor and sisters Margaret Redgeford of Anoma, Colo. and Irene Brendengen of Duluth.

Military honors were accorded by the Duluth VFW Combined Honor Guard. Inurnment was in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Stanley W. Jugasek
Stanley W. Jugasek, who was born Dec. 7, 1912 in Proctor to John and Eleanora Rogaska Jugasek, died Tues., Dec. 14, 1999, in Nopeming Nursing Home.

He had lived in Proctor for many years and in West Duluth for 45 years. Stan was an employee of the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway, working in the Car Dept. for 41 years, retiring in 1973. He attended Proctor Schools and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Red Star Division, 6th Cavalry Reconnaissance. He was activated for 306 days and served in the Solomon Islands and Luzon, Philippine Islands. Stan married Edna M. Richards on Sept. 3, 1948 in Duluth.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Proctor Moose Lodge No. 1302, West Duluth American Legion Post No. 71 and Duprey-Alexander VFW Post No. 137. He bowled for many years in various Duluth bowling leagues and was an avid fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Edna in 1978 and brothers Bill in 1993, Joe in 1994 and Leo in 1998.

Survivors include sisters Helen (Frank) Nosek of Fredonia, NY and Eleanor (Louis) Brassard of Proctor, brother Frank Jugasek of Proctor, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral mass Thursday in St. James Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Charles Flynn will officiate. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Combined Honor Guard. Arrangements made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Sieg Rewald
Services will be held for Sieg Rewald who died Sun., Dec. 12, 1999 in his Almac Drive home. He was 59.

The Proctor resident was born in Golub-Novagrad, Poland, to Leo Robert and Alina (Jankowski) Rewald. He came to the United States in June 1958, settling in Woodworth, N.D. He graduated from North Dakota State University-Fargo, School of Pharmacy in 1963. He moved to Proctor in 1966 and married Margaret “Peggy” McGovern on July 15, 1967, in St. Rose Catholic Church. He worked as a pharmacist for 15 years with the Target Store, Duluth, until joining the Hospital Corp. of America in McAllan, Texas from 1981 to 1991.

He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church and a former member of the Proctor Moose Lodge 1302.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Teresa in 1994 and grandsons Michael in 1991 and Anthony in 1996.

He is survived by his wife Peggy, sons Kris (Elizabeth “Betsy”) of Urbandale, Iowa and David of New Richmond, Wis. and Duluth, daughters Pamela Rewald (Brent Bordson) of Maplewood, Minn. and Patricia (Ron) Jauhola of Duluth, brothers Waldemar (Michelle) of Eagen, Minn. and Alfred (Loretta) of Champlin, Minn. and a grandson Matthew Rewald of Duluth.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Thursday with wake prayers at 5 p.m. and rosary at 6:30 p.m. in Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Rose Catholic Church, Proctor. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery.

Arrangements made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Jennie L. Olsen
Services were held earlier this week for long time Pike Lake resident Jennie L. Olsen. She died Fri., Dec. 10, 1999 in a Duluth hospital. She was 91.

She was born in Duluth and moved to Pike Lake in 1936. Jennie was a full-time homemaker and mother of two children. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and its Leah Circle. During construction of First Lutheran, she was a volunteer worker at the Builders Inn Restaurant, raising funds for the building of the church. She was also a member of the Pike Lake Association. Jennie enjoyed taking trips on the ore boats with her husband Albert, who was a Great Lakes captain.

She is survived by sons Richard (June) Olsen and Guy (Fern) Olsen, both of Pike Lake, granddaughters Cheryl (Robert) Ekstrand, Debra (Frank) Messina, Patty (Erik) Pedersen and Pauline Olsen, great-grandchildren Kaitlyn, Michael, Nicky and Jeffery, and several nieces and nephews.

Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Mary Elizabeth Myers
Services were held earlier in the week for Mary Elizabeth Myers. She died Fri., Dec. 17, in a Duluth hospital. She was 79.

Mrs. Myers, who moved to Proctor in 1951 and became renowned for her pies and seven sons, was born to Charles and Evelyn Archambeau in the family farm house in Saxon, Wis., graduated from Saxon High School and moved to Superior, where she married John W. Myers. She had been a Proctor resident since 1951. She worked in food service with St. Mary’s Hospital and Copeland Community Center for many years and was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Legion of Mary, Ladies Order of Foresters, American Legion Auxiliary Post 106 and Proctor Moose Auxiliary Chapter 585, and was an active volunteer with the Proctor Food Shelf. She loved gardening and crocheting and was well-known for the great number of pies she made for church dinners and pie sales.

She was preceded in death by her husband John W. on April 9, 1987.

She is survived by sons Robert (Sandy) of Wyoming, Minn., James Sr. (Roberta), Bill (JoAnn) and Gary (Brenda), all of Proctor, Richard (Sissy) of Hermantown, Michael (Caryn) of Wayzata, Minn., Paul (Jan) of Scanlon and Daryl of Duluth; a sister Leslie (John) Healy of Las Vegas; a brother Charles (Loyce) Archambeau of San Bernadino, Calif.; a special friend Ed Auge of Proctor, 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery, Superior. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Everett E. Lewis
Former Proctor resident Everett E. Lewis died Thurs., Dec. 9, 1999 in Thermopolis Wyo. He was 85.

Everett married Shirley Brownell on Sept. 16, 1942 and moved to Proctor. He was a mechanic for Carbolite Corp. and the Bolton Swanby Co. In the 1970’s, he was employed as a welder for Reach-All Manufacturing, retiring in 1978. In November 1992, he and his wife bought a home in East Thermopolis.

He is survived by his wife, sons Grant, Mickey, Edward and Danny, 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a brother, two sisters, a stepbrother and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

James Lewis Hocking
James Lewis Hocking, who was a Proctor resident since 1962, died Tues., Dec. 14, 1999 in his home. He was 77.

He was born in Hibbing. He married Frances on July 10, 1947. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a surveyor and technician for the Minnesota Department of Transportation for 20 years, retiring in 1982. He had a love and appreciation for many animals.

He is survived by his wife Francis, daughters Jan (Larry) Nadeau of Duluth and Diane Hocking of Hermantown, a sister Virginia Segler of Proctor, granddaughters Amy, April and Ashley Ugstad, and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Robert N. Christensen
Services were held last week for Robert N. Christensen. He died Tues., Dec. 21, 1999 in a Duluth hospital. He was 70.

The Proctor resident was born in Duluth and graduated from Morgan Park High School in 1947. He married Evelyn Ritz in 1950. He retired from U.S. Steel after 30 years in 1979.

He was a member of Retired Steel Workers of America Local 1028, Moose Lodge 1302, a life member of the All American Club, West Duluth Cribbage League, and the Minnesota Senior Federation Northeast Coalition.

Robert is survived by his wife Evelyn Christensen, a son Keith (Shari) Christensen of Proctor, daughters Patricia (Bill) Dale and Barbara (Rod) Anderson, both of Mountain Iron, brothers Meier (June) Christensen of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Roland (Betty) Christensen of Brooklyn Center, Minn., a sister Gloria Luick of Duluth, grandchildren Deena (Alan), Christopher (Julia), Ryan (Laura), Kimberly and Nicholas, and great-grandchildren Max and Andrew.

Inurnment was in Oneota Cemetery.
